View Full Version : What Does Blue Kryptonite Do?

OK, if I remember my old Superman comics, there were several varieties of kryptonite. Seems like every time a story writer was up against a deadline, he invented a new variation on kryptonite to get over the hump.

This came up in conversation the other day. We were discussing the rainbow of Kryptonite hues, and we all seemed to recall a blue kryptonite. None of us could remember what it could do. Did it have something to do with Bizarro Superman?

Blue kryptonite was created by aiming the bizzaro
ray at green kryptonite. It had the same effect on
bizzaros that green kryptonite had on Superman.

I knew that.

The one that always confused ME was "jewel kryptonite." Looked like a big ol' diamond.

Who knows what jewel kryptonite does?

Jewel kryptonite was formed from the jewel mountains of Krypton by the phantom zone exiles. I think there was only one piece of it. They used it to focus their mental powers to do some sort of mischief. I can't remember what though. Either to escape or to control people not in the zone.

The varieties we could recall were: Green Kryptonite (of course) Red Kryptonite Blue Kryptonite Gold Kryptonite White Kryptonite

Any others that we missed?

And thanks, Annie-Xmas. That confirms my suspicions on the blue stuff.

Types of Kryptonite and their effects:

Green Kryptonite: Harmful to Kryptonians under a yellow sun. Weakens and eventually kill them through Kryptonite poisoining.

Anti-Kryptonite: similar to Green K, but affects non-super-powered Kryptonians. This was a retcon used to explain why the non-powered Argo City residents could be killed by what seemed to be Green K.

X-Kryptonite: Only one chunk, it was created by Supergirl trying to find a cure for Green K. It gives Terrans, or at
least Terran cats, Kryptonian style powers for a limited time.

Red Kryptonite: Causes a specific, odd, effect. Often involved physical transformations or mental changes. Each
chunk had a different effect, and could only affect a given Kryptonian once. Effects usually wore off in 24-48 hours. Created when Green K passed through a space cloud.

Gold Kryptonite: Removes a Kryptonian`s super-powers permanently. Created when Green K passed through a different space cloud.

White Kryptonite: Kills any plant life from any world. Yep, another space cloud.

Blue Kryptonite: Has the same effect on Bizarro Kryptonians as Green K does on real Kryptonians. Created by the
same imperfect duplicator ray that created the Bizarros.

Jewel Kryptonite: Remnents of Krypton`s Jewel Mountains, it allows Phantom Zone residents to focus their mental energy
and cause explosions in the outside world.

Green Kryptonite (of course)
Red Kryptonite
Blue Kryptonite
Gold Kryptonite
White Kryptonite
For the benefit of us dopers who are of a slightly more recent vintage, what did all of these other colors do?

I know that green is the standard Kryptonite that weakened Superman. Didn't one color permanently remove his powers?

Nevermind. Twin posted the answer while I was writing my last post.

Red Kryptonite: I thought at some point in the pre-Infinity Crisis timeline, it was revealed that the "space cloud" that transformed green kryptonite into red was actually magical in nature, so that red kryptonite was basicly "magicked" kryptonite. (Which would explain how it could do so many weird things).

Anyway just for the record, in the new DC universe there is only one form of kryptonite, plain old green. And in the new version it's radioactivity is actually harmful to ordinary people, just not instantly so like to Superman.

How did they discover the function of gold kryptonite? Did some super-dude get fried by it and lose his powers?

They missed Purple Kryptonite, which was red kryptonite for Bizarros.

Also -- anyone know where to get Bizarro mechandise? Sure, just aim your imperfect duplicator ray at some Superman merchandise. :D

That is strange. I just put "Bizzaro" into a search engine and of course I got things for the comic strip, Superman and get this, Benny Hinn.

At least one sper-villain lost her powers through exposure to gold kryptonite. We also learn that small quantities of it don't affect super-folk, since Supergirl conveniently kept some in her compact.

In one story there was "Yellow" kryptonite, but it turned out to be a hoax.

Don't make fun of white kryptonie -- it saved superman from a plague that Lex Luthor bio-enginered.

There was a Legion of Super Heroes story where the earth's atmosphere was engulfed in green kryptonite, so Superboy and Supergirl were kicked out for their own protection until Color Kid (from the Legion of Alternate Super Heroes), whose superpower was to change the colors of things, changed the color of the green kryptonite to blue kryptonite, which, they said, had no effect on Kryptonians. It also had the effect of changing the sky back to blue, so future artists wouldn't have to worry about poor continuity. Not that they seemed to worry about poor continuity very often.

I'm 43 years old. Why do I remember this stuff?

I guess you could call it the Kryptonite Spectrum. :)

At the risk of having this thread sent to MPSIMS...

What if Superman was an alternative comic? Could we then have...
Pink kryptonite - he's now chasing Jimmy Olsen instead of Lois Lane
Tie-dyed kryptonite - grows his hair, turns the S on his suit into a peace symbol, and makes him stoned
Brown kryptonite - not exactly sure what it does, but I don't think I want to be around when it hits

Which would also see Purple Kryptonite turn him into a raging sex maniac (yes I remember the bizarro purple K but this would be more fun).

Black kryptonite would...?

Black Kryptonite would make Superman evil.

How about Grey Kryptonite? Chocolate Chip Kryptonite? Kryptonite Lite?

It gives Terrans, or at least Terran cats, Kryptonian style powers for a limited time.Terran people as well as cats. I read a Supergirl story once where a criminal got hold of a tiny grain of X-Kryptonite, and he used the powers it gave him to cause mischief. And he swallowed the grain so Supergirl couldn't take it away from him.

But here's the thing: unlike everything else from pre-Crisis Krypton, kryptonite (in any form) doesn't become indestructible under a yellow sun (although it does become friction-proof, which is why so much of it keeps turning up on Earth). So the criminal's stomach acid dissolved the grain of X-Kryptonite, his powers vanished, and Supergirl made the collar.

Do pieces of kryptonite just glow, or are they actually surrounded by a nimbus, or halo, of visible light?

dpr

glows

RealityChuck

It glows, just like all radioactive elements.

Knowing this, of course, we now can explain why the radioactive rod that Homer Simpson takes home with him each week does not affect him or anyone in Springfield. Since it glows green, it's not plutonium, but rather kryptonite. Mr. Burns has found out the way to harness green K's energy (another reason he can run the power plant with all those safety violations). Further, the green-K power keeps Superman from snooping around looking to enforce those pesky OSHA regulations.
