View Full Version : Amazing Race 11/18 - "Please Lord, Give Me Milk!"
Last week: Saggy. Black. Man-panties.
And, um, a goth confessed to her sordid macrame past, Asian Dad brought the crazy, Pat and Kate hastened the Anglican schism and sheep were eyed nervously.
This week: Camels! Oh thank you Jebus, bring on the camels! Let's watch!
Spoilers: if the material is on-screen it's fair game but note that some people prefer not seeing the previews. If it's not on-screen, including from CBS's website, please spoiler it.

Quick poll: How many people do you think will get squirted by camel milk from a mis-aimed teat? Put me down for 3.

I saw a promo commercial in which Grandson and Grandpa were looking at a clue, and Grandson was trying to pronounce their next location:
Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Fasso. His pronunciation was hilarious! I met a diplomat who had been posted there and who taught me the correct pronunciation; it's WA-ga-doo-goo, for those who wonder. Of course, I couldn't find Burkina Fasso on a map if you paid me, other than that it's in Africa somewhere.
Much as I like Christina, I'm kind of hoping she and Daddy Dearest get the boot tonight because, frankly, I can't take much more of him ragging on her the way he did last week. That was just so nasty, and you could tell it was a lifelong pattern. She looked so crushed and defeated, it was painful to watch.
Whatever else happens, I assume the camels will emerge the victors!

I think it was highly unfair that the camel was tied so that Lorena could milk it. None of the other teams received that kind of help, especially Mariana and Julia. I suspect that without that help, Lorena would still be in rural Burkina Faso, melting down, and Mariana and Julia would still be in the Race.
Other than that, I thought it was a good leg. I'm continuing to like the Goths, and Donald and Nicholas.

Ahhh. Not quite a hero to zero. But oh so close!
The teaching and learning tasks seemed pretty even in terms of speed. Especially toward the end, when the rest of the class had already learned the words.

Jen's technique for milking a camel reminded me of something. I'm almost surprised she didn't use her mouth.

I have to say: both Ronald and Donald impressed me this week. Ronald because he actually learned from his mistakes, and Donald because he is the ass-kickingest grandpa EVAH! Also, I loved how the sisters actually allowed themselves to have a good time in the Ouagadougou train station -- that looks like it was kind of cool for an overnight bunch.

Yay blonde I cannot name pulling the camels teat! (Are we sure that was a girl camel?)As far as I know, among mammals only females give milk.
We all knew the camel-milking would be a race-breaker. It's still impressive how four or five teams stil made it to the mat at about the same time.
The Detour was very balanced, and entirely skill-based. And they were well chosen too -- meaningful stuff that could actually endure beyond the race.

I now have Donald on top of the want-to-win list. Cool Grandpas are the best, even if they are fated to never win.
Was Kynt serious or joking with the whole "You have to help me down from the train" whine? Cause if he was serious he shot way up the got-to-go list.
I have also decided I am going to invent the S-chip to go along with the v-chip. Whenever someone gets beyond medium-low shrillness, it will automatically substitute a random Simpsons quote for their whining scream.
I also liked how the procession wasn't immediatly obvious, and people had to look around and keep their heads, rather than just running to the next pointer.

I really felt bad for Mariana & Julia--they gave Lorena some help, and then got philiminated. :( Also, Mariana was actually trying to find a way to improve her milking technique instead of just freaking out.
Note to Jason: There's a big difference between "passionate" and "nuts."
And what exactly did Lorena say about not reacting well under pressure? Why did she go on the show then?
I was really not liking the blondes this episode. Their reaction to the poverty of Burkina Faso was just...stereotypical ugly American, I guess. Embarrassing.

You know, I have to wonder about sending someone who's nervous, panicky, and intense to do a job involving animals which don't like loud noises and sudden movements. It didn't surprise me Lorena had a hard time milking camels, even without the preview. I felt sorry for her towards the end. On the other hand, this roadblock generated my favorite line of the episode: "Their nipples! You have to be gentle!" I was also surprised by the number of people who apparently forgot that, if it gives milk, it isn't male.
The gentleman pointed out something when five teams were racing to the final stop: you don't have to be the first team there; you just have to beat at least one other team. Of course, he's not sure that leaving at 4:17 am would constitute a reward for anything! ;)
I'm sorry to see the sisters go, but at least they did it fairly gracefully.

He may have been joking, but we already knew from last week that he's "kinda prissy."

They don't know the specifics of the Roadblock task until after they make the decision of who's going to do it. All they had to go by was the clue "Who's ready to work up a thirst?"
The blondes? Dead to me. Not that I actually cared about them before but now? Dead to me.
Fare thee well, Julianna. Too bad you weren't on the show long enough for anyone to figure out which one of you was which. There really ought to be a Race rule that if you and your partner are largely identical that one of you must wear a brightly colored scarf or a wacky tie.
sigh. The pretty sisters are gone. Such a pity, yet so predictable. Silly them for giving the meltdown giril a tip.
The blondes are disgusting.
Quick poll, would you have taken teach or learn? My wife and I discussed it throughout the entire episdoe and both changed sides so often that I lose track. In the end, I would tend to think that kids are better able to learn something than I am, but I am too nervous of putting my race on the performance of someone else.

I vacilated as well, but finally decided I would have done the learn task, if only because I wouldn't want to risk everything on a little kid. However eager they would be, they wouldn't be driven by $1 million. But the kids were cute, and I thought both challenges were pretty cool.

May I say how much I love Gramps? He calmly does the camel-milking and runs all over Africa with no problem, after staying up half the night dancing with the cute girls. Go, Gramps!
Another fun episode. The mispronunciations were entertaining, as was Lorena's Flo-like meltdown. And even Flo didn't melt down this early in her race, even though she was the queen of meltdowns!
Just when I was thinking that, against my better judgment, I was beginning to like the blonds, they go and spout Ugly Americanisms. Oh well, I think it's easier to hate them anyway, and it's not like they've given me plenty of material.

I have heard parents say things like "When you make that sound, I can't understand you." Apparently, no one ever said that to Lorena. Is she 3?

I think the last time I called my sister baby was... ya know, I don't think I've EVER called my sister baby. It's weird.
And Kent can't be killed fast enough. Can we just dump Ronald and make Christine and Vixen the all-girl team everyone wants to see?
Thank goodness, Ron's hernia distracted him from making fun of his daughter in this episode.
Too bad about Mariana & Julia. :( (What's up with the hot, Latino sister teams? They always seem to go out early!)

Oh, and because we haven't mentioned it yet: Phil looked fantastic last night. I love it when the Costume Department dresses him in pants that actually fit properly.
Note to self: pronunciation is hard, especially when it involves capitals of foreign countries. Plus: I love having yet another task this season whose outcome depends on how you treat animals.
Taxi Assessment
Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Ari & Staella and Kate & Pat - Gone, but not forgotten. Or gone, at least.
Marianna & Julia (down from "Stopping") - Last week, I called Marianna & Julia "a team to watch." I was thinking "...because they might break out competitively," not "...because they might break down competitively." But hey, I sort-of called it. This team didn't do anything a lot wrong, but a bunch of little mistakes cost them. The whole episode came down to time management at the end, and Marianna & Julia just didn't do well. Poor performance at the Roadblock was their biggest problem, but offering a suggestion to Lorena didn't help. (TAR Rule #1: if you're in second-to-last place, never help out the last place team.) Nor did their slow pace between the Roadblock and Detour help. Not enough hustle, not enough time, so long Marianna & Julia.
Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
Ronald & Christina (holding steady) - Ronald was less of a dick this episode, which I guess is good, but the hernia development (from holding all that criticism in, I guess) is probably not a good sign. The first heavy-lifting task will be painful to watch. This team is still the winner in the "most likely to be eliminated" voting.
Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Nicolas & Donald (holding steady) - Hum. A disadvantage of blindly following other people is that they might be lost, too. Not the best decision in the world. Still, Grandpa did great on the Roadblock, without even having to resort to stripping to his skivvies, and this team essentially tied for second place.
Lorena & Jason (down from "Passing") - Last week, I idly wondered what Lorena was bringing to this team. As it turns out, she's bringing all the hysterics and nervous breakdowns, and none of the competence. Next week is going to be critical for her: if Lorena can recover some self-confidence, the team might go farther. If she doesn't, they're in for a world of trouble. This week, though, they stave off disaster with the last-minute hustle that Marianna & Julia didn't have.
"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Shana & Jennifer (down from "Passing Lane") - This team is starting to get stressed out by the pace of the Race and the locations they're moving through. Another team for which the next episode will be critical.
Jennifer & Nathan (up from "Stopping") - Almost a brilliant move hustling to get on the earlier flight to Paris. It came to naught, but the point was they tried it, which is a good sign. (Although I think it was a good attempt this time, getting on another flight to save 40 minutes could backfire--what if it had been their plane with mechanical problems?) In any case, this team now has two top-three finishes in a row, which is also good. However, I'm still a little bearish on this team, remembering the status of their "pre-existing relationship," so I'm moving them up only one notch.
In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
Kynt & Vyxsin (holding steady) - Not a lot of airtime this week, but a solid performance, and no real mistakes.
Rachel & TK (up from "Rapido!") - I like this team's calmness; they don't get stressed out over minor things and that generally helps them. TK rather successfully communicated his calm to the camel, and headed out in first place. They got a little lost on the way to the Detour (and again on the way to the Pit Stop...), and that's disappointing, but it's soon corrected.
Cruisin' with Earl - or, drivin' on the shoulder, takin' shortcuts, and generally kickin' butt.
Azaria & Hendekea (up from "Rapido!") - I expected this team to come roaring back this week from a middle-of-the-pack finish last week, and did they ever. Brilliant performance at the Detour, divvying up the flashcards and memorizing them in a heartbeat. And Azaria & Hendekea avoid the random wandering that plagued a few other teams (Rachel & TK, I'm looking at you...). They smoke the teams in front of them and wind up in first place, despite a mediocre Detour. That's two out of three first place finishes, enough to move Azaria & Hendekea all the way up to "Cruisin'" status.
Next week: More Africa, methinks, and....drama? Is it real or manufactured? Tune in and find out!
Props to Mullinator and his Raj Ratings.
Was Kynt serious or joking with the whole "You have to help me down from the train" whine? Cause if he was serious he shot way up the got-to-go list. I'm not sure, but I suspect he was joking--I think Kent & Vixen have this "I'm a girly-man, and you're a manly-girl" in-joke they amuse themselves with.
The gentleman pointed out something when five teams were racing to the final stop: you don't have to be the first team there; you just have to beat at least one other team. Of course, he's not sure that leaving at 4:17 am would constitute a reward for anything! ;) And that's the key to the Amazing Race: for all but the last leg, the key isn't winning, it's not losing. A fine point, perhaps, but one that teams need to rememeber when they consider an action that's risky timewise.
Quick poll, would you have taken teach or learn? My wife and I discussed it throughout the entire episdoe and both changed sides so often that I lose track. In the end, I would tend to think that kids are better able to learn something than I am, but I am too nervous of putting my race on the performance of someone else.My wife opted for "Teach," thinking that the kids would be primed to learn new words, and would be able to do it faster. I opted for "Learn," because I wouldn't want to accidentally get the slowest learner in the class. However, since it turns out that you only have to learn ten words as a team (and thus five words apiece, as Azaria & Hendekea did), then "Learn" is clearly the best option.
This is totally true, but seriously, did they even look at their surroundings? They were in the middle of nowhere with nothing around but a bunch of camels. Somewhere in the back of their vestigial lizard brains it had to register that perhaps, just maybe, the camels might be involved, since there were so damn many of them hanging around.
Well yes, but there were sheep hanging around last week to be eyeballed nervously so trying to guess the task from the surroundings doesn't always quite work, is all I'm sayin'.
So when are we gonna start seeing some of the U-Turns and whatnot that somebody posted about a few weeks ago?

Nah, they're from New Orleans. After living there for a few years, I still find it strange not to be constantly addressed by terms of endearment left and right from total strangers and friends alike. That's just What's Done there. These two don't give off incest vibes like TAR2's Blake and Paige did, that's for sure.

Did anyone else think it was stupid for that one team (forget who it was) to take their own flight by themselves to get in 40 minutes earlier to Paris? I know it almost paid off big time for them since the other plane had trouble, but if it was their plane that had trouble, being the only team on that flight would have screwed them completely. Until it is the end of the race, I think I would try to stay in the main pack a little more, or at least try to keep one other team with me on the flight. If the earlier flight would have gotten them to their final destination sooner, I would have maybe gone for it, but all it did was get them to the same connecting flight a little sooner. Why risk it unless it is the final leg.
I can see why running to the mat in the end can pay off though. Sometimes you leave just a minute or so before the other teams, and then you have a task where you have to sign up for a time slot. Being a few seconds ahead can get you on an earlier bus or train or boat or whatever and end up paying off. Or sometimes you assume you aren't running for first or last, but end up being wrong. I think I would just run for it every time to be safe. No harm in trying, there.
Did anyone else think it was stupid for that one team (forget who it was) to take their own flight by themselves to get in 40 minutes earlier to Paris? I wouldn't call it stupid, or even risky in this case. Since both flights connected via Paris, there was very little risk involved -- and as you mentioned, it nearly paid off big time. Now, if the earlier flight connected through a different city (such as Madrid), that would be a major risk. In which case, you would want at least one or two teams to accompany you on the earlier flight -- so if you miss the connection and wind up hours behind, you still have a chance of beating someone else to the Pit Stop.
Fortunes are won and lost all the time due to airport strategy. That's one of the things that make this show so awesome.
