View Full Version : When the heck is the next on-board Mafia game?
ShadowFacts

After Town's triumphant victory in Mafia: The Conspiracy, I've been patiently waiting for the next game. I read in one of the threads that there was a queue of moderators lined up for the next game. Aaaaaaaaaannnd.....nothing. It's been weeks and I'm dying to play again.
So, what's the scoop? Does anyone know who is running the next game and when it will begin?

Hey, I'm reformed!
Although, if you really want to vote for me, we may be needing subs here soon:

We've only gone through two Days, and there are still 20 or so players alive. I'm not sure, though, but feel free to check it out.

I wouldn't mind playing in another on-board game. I had to opt out of the Blade Runner one because regularly checking another message board proved more time-consuming than I'd thought it'd be... but I'm always on here anyway.

This is precisely the reason I didn't play in the Blade Runner game.

Actually, this is as good a place as any to put this out there. To anyone in the Blade Runner game: my apologies for my absence, but my company has royally fucked me over to the point that I can no longer access the game site.
See, I telecommute, and they've recently changed the setup between my router and the netgate box, so now everything I do goes through the corporate network. Every fricking site that I (or my wife, who is obviously on my home network) go to, whether it's on work time or not, is subject to being blocked by the company server. And is seems that accessing "psychopathgame" is something the server won't allow.
Needless to say, I'm rabidly pissed off about this, as are the dozens of my coworkers who telecommute as well. The company, realizing they were about to have a mutiny on their hands, announced yesterday that they were going to undo everything they did by the end of the day, but it doesn't look like that's the case.
So anyway, I'm going to guess I'm getting a lot of flack on the game site for not posting (hell, for not even logging onto the site) for several days. Believe me, I'd love to, but I can't even see the board at the moment. Hopefully this'll all be cleared up by the time the weekend is over, but I'll fully understand if I need to be subbed out.

NAF1138 has the bid for the next Mafia game and mentioned (back on the 22nd) that he/she'd wait a week or two weeks to get it started.
And, Hal, that's a bummer. Even if my company were paying for my broadband connection (I wish), I'd be unhappy about restrictions from my home network. Here's hoping they really do get you back to normal as quickly as possible.

Technical glitches getting the scum boards set up are slowing things down, but if I can get them fixed quickly (ie get Idle to fix them for me) I should be able to get the startup thread going sometime on Monday.

Subscribe to this thread. I will post here when the game thread is up. I am hoping monday, but I am having trouble getting my co-mod (Mtgman) onto the project planning/scum board. So that might delay things until Tuesday.
This is going to be a smaller game then we have had in the recent past. It will only have 19 players, so keep your eyes open if you want a slot.

How does playing work in real life? I'd imagine it would have to be a bit simpler than, say, the least one where there were four different sides. I know that in the very simple games, mafia/werewolves talk while the town covers their ears, sometimes...is that how you did it?

When I played in IRL (and we used to play it a lot when I was doing high school theatre) town closed their eyes and mafia had to communicate with hand signals.
Everyone sat in a circle next to each other, so you had to be careful not to make extra noise. It was a good game to work on acting chops with. Because it required both muscle control and a cultivation of the ability to lie convincingly.
Also, this game is going to be a throwback of sorts to those simpler IRL mafia games. There will be ALMOST no power roles. Exact details of how things will work in the opening post of the game thread. But the game it will be semi open in it set up, AND you get to write your own death scenes.

It's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_Game#Online_play) a (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=407197) game (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=414041), and (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=417106) it's (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=426256) fun (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=436661).
You should totally play. We need new blood. And it isn't like the game is addicting in any way shape or form. No siree.
Getting killed in the offboard game lit something of a fire under my ass to get the new game running. Must have the game!

Ooh, that sounds fun as well as very challenging. My last game (on this board) was a way more complicated one. It was also my first one so it was a bit hard. It'll be nice to see how a more basic game plays out. (Keeping track of all four factions and individual people does make one's brain hurt a bit.)

I made my brain hurt too, and I was just watching it.
IRL mafia rules BTW. I have been working on making it a party game (like the murder mystery games) where people don't have to sit in a circle but instead jsut walk around and interact. The scum have to go off covertly and meet in corners to plan kills etc. I just cant figure out how they submit who gets killed without everyone figuring out it was them.

The way I've done it is everyone gets a pad of paper and everyone is required to write SOMETHING every Day(if there's a cop) and every Night. It's harder to tell who is writing a player's name and who is writing nonsense. Post it notes work great because you can write on the back and have a self-sealing envelope to pass to the mod. Make a fish bowl, or something, be the repository and everyone wanders by at various points after talking/mixing for a bit and drops their note in. They need to put their name and their vote/action on the note.
Enjoy,
Steven

I've gotten my extended family addicted to Mafia. The kids just love it. The only problem I have is balancing the game -- the first time we played it, the Mafia won every round, and the second time, the Town won every time. I couldn't just adjust the Town/Mafia ratio because it was small groups both times. I suppose that the answer is to adjust the power roles somehow? Anybody have any ideas?

The IRL games I play is always 1 scum per 3 town, up to 10 players. (More then 10 players is almost too big because the games take so long.)
We didn't really have power roles. We did have a role we call the snitch that got to see the identity of a single person before the game started. If the game had more then 7 people we would add in that character. The game gets harder the better you know the people you are playing with.

I was thinking the same thing. Alternatively, you (as moderator) could carry around a little notebook and wander around talking to people. Every time you talk to someone, write something in the book. Some notes will be garbage, some notes will be actual data, so no one can make guesses off of when you write.

I played my first RL game of Mafia when I was probably six. In the kid's church room while my parents were in the main service. We called it "fruit basket surprise" and we all sat in a circle and had to figure out who the fruit with the worm was. The worm could make one of us spoil each "night"(we wouldn't change sides, we'd just be "thrown out").
Enjoy,
Steven

Along those lines, I remember something called "Murder in the Dark." You drew slips of paper, and you were either a potential victim, a detective of the murderer. The lights went off and when the murderer touched someone, they were dead, the victim screamed and the detective had to ask questions to figure out who was the killer. Ah, the Pre-Internet days.

The boards should be in order now. I approved Mtgman's account yesterday. :)
Also...I think I may create another proboard (without game in the title), so Hal (and anyone else with filters) can play in other sites if one isn't on here at the moment (I do have two others, but they're both usually being used by: A. the game going on at my boards and B. the game going on here. :p So time for a third one methinks)

For anyone who ever wishes to use it for anything. I may turn it into a place like psychopath is now, at a later date, so more people can play without their computers keeping them out (well, if it persists). Maybe after this game or the next one I'll move over to there and have psychopath be the one used for scum boards if someone wants it.
I dunno yet. I'll ask everyone when story's game is over. *shrugs*

Is the new board for scum to talk at night or will the actual game be there?

Either or. *shrugs*
Right now it's for scum (or spoilers) for any game running here or there but in time (or whenever someone/everyone wants to) it can change into a place where regular off-SDMB games are held (like psychopathgame is).
Really, it matters if Hal can get the ban lifted or not and if anyone else ever gets a ban from the word 'game' being in the link address (as others have had that problem before, it seems).

ok so the technical problems delayed us enough that we will not be able to start the game today. But look for a sign up thread tomorrow!
There will be 18 slots and 24 hours for sign up. The game will officially start Wednesday and will last a minimum of 4 weeks but will probably run 8-10 weeks.
We will make allowances for people who won't be able to post near Christmas and New Year's.
