Hey folks, this close to the deadline, how about y'all make it easier by reposting plain lists? Thanks. I will take a pause after post 242 to see if I can get any that are easier to handle. There are 132 entries to that point and the most frequent nominees are, in order:

Fidel Castro
Ariel Sharon
Farrah Fawcett
Britney Spears
Elizabeth Taylor
Amy Winehouse
Billy Graham
Kirk Douglas
Muhammad Ali
Dick Cheney

amarone thanks for the update and for bein' our host (hostess?) with the most (mostest?) this comin' year for this most gruesome yet fun thread.

Also, in case I haven't said so, thanks to a bunchanumbers for all her hard work and dedication.

I could not do this. I would have already reached out and slapped a bunch of folks for not following directions.

Thanks again!

It would seem I'm better at this than I thought. I had a fresh list of 13 brand new names that I was going to submit. Then I ran each of them through Wikipedia, an found that nine of them already died this year. Ah well...

So, here's four new ones and nine reissues (as always, all original ideas -- no picking through the thread for tips):

1) Elizabeth Taylor - Actress
2) Salvatore "Fat Sal" Scala - accused Gambino crime family captain
3) Robin Roberts - Good Morning America host
4) Rosanne Cash - Singer
5) Aretha Franklin - Singer
6) Muhammad Ali - Boxer
7) Louis Farrakhan - Nation of Islam Leader
8) Jerry Lewis - Comedian
9) Jerry Lee Lewis - Musician
10) Fidel Castro - Cuban Dictator
11) Al Davis - Oakland Raiders Owner
12) John Madden - NFL Commentator
13) Reverend Donald Wildmon - Raging Douchebag

And in easy C&P format as well:

Elizabeth Taylor
Salvatore Scala
Robin Roberts
Rosanne Cash
Aretha Franklin
Muhammad Ali
Louis Farrakhan
Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lee Lewis
Fidel Castro
Al Davis
John Madden
Reverend Donald Wildmon

Aaaand, just in case we have a clock-beater, we'll call Charlton Heston to be an alternate.

Last year I went with an Old Fogey strategy, average age in the upper 80s. They're all doing fine and well, thank you very much.* Best I managed was Art Buchwald, who was #20 on the list I had compiled.

What to do, what to do? Dig a deeper hole! The thirteen listed below now have an average age of 92:

Mitch Miller
Karl Malden
Studs Terkel
Jack LaLanne
Norman Lloyd
Richard Widmark
Harry Morgan
Les Paul
Olivia de Haviland
Van Johnson
Daniel Schorr
Walter Cronkite
Kirk Douglas

Alternates:

Zsa Zsa Gabor
Lena Horne
Phyllis Diller

Alas, June Foray (voice of Rocket J. Squirrel, Esq.) falls to #17 on my current list. Hang in there, little buddy!

__________
* If anyone has heard of the demise of Studs Terkel, Harry Morgan, Daniel Schorr, Walter Cronkite, Kirk Douglas, Phyllis Diller, June Foray, Oral Roberts, Mike Wallace, Billy Graham, Andy Rooney, Mickey Rooney, or Hugh Downs,+ please let me know!

Okay: I was, I believe 0/13 last year. You would think a palliative care nurse such as myself could do better than this but its more that I dont get hourly reports of peoples health. So some of it is repeats with a few fresh/elderly faces.

2. Nancy Reagan
3. Margaret Thatcher

I dunno. I thought I was ready to post my list and then I saw in the news that Mindy McCready got out of jail over the weekend. Hmmmm. I might need to move her up from alternate status.

Clearly I must give this more thought. I'm wildly paranoid that I'll somehow miss the posting deadline though (I did that one year and I'm still filled with grrrr over it) so I'll go ahead, post what I have, and reserve the right for a few last minute tweaks if needed.

I hope he's playing it close to the vest and didn't forget. Even though his list is usually filled with celebrities that I never heard of like the prime minister of East Bumfuqistan. I still admire his research technique.

Oh and before anyone comments, Robert Picton is convicted in Canada, and he won't recieve the death penalty. It was mentioned last year too. I am thinking that a)he might not be the healthiest person arround, (what with eating all that pig meat, and his partying with women of interesting occupations) and b) there might be a few people not too pleased with him. So yes, convicted murderer, death by other means.

Well, mine ain't. Sneaking in, it's still December 31st in Hawaii and that's in America, so:

The Muckety-Mucks:
1) Fidel Castro
2) Pervez Musharraf
3) Ariel Sharon (legally still alive)
4) George Steinbrenner

The Publicly Sick:
5) Elizabeth Edwards
6) Farrah Fawcett
7) Omar Abdel-Rahman (the blind terrorist sheik)
8) Margaret Thatcher

The Ancients:
9) Walter Cronkite
10) Julie Wilson, cabaret singer

The Geez, They’re Still Alive?!
11) Elizabeth Taylor
12) Whitney Houston
13) Charlton Heston

I did so badly last year that I feel bad giving people like El Viejo an extended lifespan, but most of these folks I bear no ill-will to.

Sorry Mehitabel - I'm going to stick with the stated rules and not allow late entries. Last year severus was not allowed to enter when his post was one minute late.

Having a hard deadline puts a limit on how long people have to see other people's selections and research them. Allowing late entries would not be fair on all those who were on time.

I have nearly all the entries in the spreadsheet now. I just have to go back and pick up a couple that were entered in unhelpful format, then go through and look for different spellings for the same person. I should have some stats published later today.

Well, sort of. Actually, there were 2093 predictions (161 entrants times 13 celebrities); if 514 were unique, that represents only 24% of the total number of predictions.

There is a difference between the number of celebrities and the number of predictions. This discussion could go on forever because you are arguing about two different things. Of course unique picks will be a lower percentage of overall predictions. That's because they are unique. I think it is more interesting that 70% of the celebrities chosen were unique picks. That shows a definate stragedy on the part of most of the players. Your stat just shows that unique picks are unique picks.

(On re-reading the rules): There isn't a prize for Most Unique Picks. :( There isn't a prize just for picking uniquely, but for picking unique celebrities that die, there is:

The "Inside Track With the Grim Reaper" Award: to be awarded to the poster or posters who pick a celebrity that no one else picked.
I think we should interpret that prize to being for the doper who picks the greatest number of unique celebrities that die.

Here's the scoop on the boxer. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/more/01/01/brain.dead.boxer.ap/index.html) Went into a coma last week at the end of the fight, declared legally dead today at the request of his family so that his organs could be harvested.

So who is going to defend his title?

mobo85
01-02-2008, 01:50 PM
This seems like one of those Terri Schiavo controversies- at what point can we say a comatose person on life support has truly died? Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_dead) states that brain death is considered a form of death in most countries. So is the official date of death December 25, 2007 or January 2, 2008? I guess the judges will have to decide.

Lok
01-02-2008, 02:01 PM
I think it should be when he was declared dead. He went into the coma last year, but it took some time for them to figure out he wasn't coming out of it. If he had been in a coma for 2 years and just died it would still be a death for this year.

Anyone who has scored this year with dead pool on someone I don't have, I catagorically despise. It's nothing personal. It's Dead Pool. :) Politics, sports, religion, I could care less. Dead People watching is good clean wacked out fun!

Speaking of hating, has the Gold Plated Diamond Encrusted Belt Buckle for the Championship been awarded? Oh, wait, Rahm can just give it too himself. Not that I'm bitter about his list actually working at near 100% capacity.

Has there been an official tally for 2007, so that I can at least rest on my one dead person laurels in smug satisfaction?

Every year I try to tell myself I won't be jealous when someone dies and I didn't pick them, but someone else did. I should instead rejoice with them, share in their happiness of one of their picks dying. I need to be confident that with patience, I too will get to have that special thrill of hearing on the radio, or watching a news report, or reading online of a celebrity death that will mean something special to me. One that will make me smile everytime it is mentioned. One that will encourage me and remind me any day could be my lucky day.

January is not even halfway over, so I need to remember there is still plenty of time for my guys and gals to die. Those of you who have been able to experience your first deaths already....well congratulations! For most of us, they are few and far between, so you should enjoy them when they happen, you don't know how long it might be until your next one. And for now I will just have to live vicariously through you, knowing my day will come.

( only in the safety of the Celebrity Death Pool thread can one express such feelings, knowing others can relate.....I am so going to hell.....)

Instead of getting points, you now get to beat yourself up over not using him as a main pick instead of an alternate. You get the knowledge that if you had just moved him up, and someone else down (someone you used who probably won't kick off anyway, and surely not worth so many points) then you could be celebrating a likely unique, many pointed, pick.

But now you will haunted by the old cliche of "Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades."

Life ( and death) can sometimes be so unfair.......

Yesterday there was a headline on the front page of AOL stating that Richard Kline died (best known probably as Larry from Three's Company but he has done a ton of other stuff). It was up for a little bit then disappeared. I have not seen anything else about it. Nothing I can find is reporting the death. I know I didn't hallucinate, my wife saw it too. Fred Thompson drops out (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/23/us/politics/23thompson.html?em&ex=1201150800&en=54f1031dc2ec5875&ei=5087%0A) of the Republican primary.

Maybe he's sick! :) News reports said he dropped out because of the stress and he was tired all the time.

This was later confirmed by a flight attendant on his last flight. Thompson was told, "I'm sorry Mr Thompson but you're going to have to check those bags under your eyes. We don't seem to have enough room for them in the overhead bin or under your seat."

I'm not Fred Thompson and I didn't pay for this ad. Now back to the Celebrity Death Pool 2008.

I'd give that title to Whitney Houston. She does have talent.

Off topic, but Brittany Spears and Whitney Houston could go out together if the Univ. of Colorado Women's Basketball team got in a plane crash (or a dorm room incident since they are roommates.)

Lois Nettleton has died.

Here's an obituary. (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-nettleton23jan23,1,1848046.story)

wolf_meister: John Stewart's death was reported in a Wile E post of January 20. Gold appeared on the memorably-titled album Bombs Away Dream Babies, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombs_Away_Dream_Babies) which was followed by the less-inspired Dream Babies Go Hollywood.
