According to CNN, Bernie Mac has died from complications of pneumonia. (No link as yet, just a breaking news blurb.)

Very tragic, and unexpected.

(And also points-free, as it appears nobody picked him.)

I know where I am spending the weekend.
Being largely unfamiliar with Mac's oeuvre, I'm curious. Does this have some meaning specifically to Bernie Mac fans? Or are you riffing on the movie title (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098627/)?

I know, I know -- a joke loses it when it has to be explained. But I need to know, dammit!

If I could add a few more comments about Leroy Sievers...

In addition to the innumerable awards he won he should also be remembered as the creator of "The Fallen" on ABC news in which Ted Kopple read the names of all America's dead from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's kind of hard to believe now, but that was actually quite controversial at the time.

Siever's cancer blog was, to me, far more informative and inspirational than anything Randy Pausch said.

His last entry was about a day before his death

He is the dog we never had.

He's a Bernese Mountain dog. A big one. We always knew what his name was going to be ..."Spanky" ... no matter what.

The fact that he would be a toy didn't really bother us. We couldn't have a real one because we both traveled too much.

So here he is, sitting with me on the bed. My comrade in cancer.

A boy and his dog.

Carpe Diem.

Probably not. The office has been left vacant on many occasions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Vice_Presidents_of_the_United_States), including as recently as from August to December of 1974. John Tyler, who took over after William Henry Harrison's one-month presidency of 1841, never got a veep during his nearly four-year term!

If Cheney actually died now, so close to the election, would they even bother swearing in a new VP for the time that is left?

Yes, because even the tiniest chance of Nancy Pelosi ascending to the Oval Office, even for only a month or two, is anathema to that administration.

Gil contracted a staph infection in 2004 that settled in his extremites. As a result, he lost the use of his legs, and some of the use of his right hand. Sometimes the results for the survivors can be more catastrophic (http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/10/10/o.warrior.mother.jenny.mccarthy/index.html).

His doc "Kill Gil, Volume 1" documents his struggle with the infection, the complications, the aftermath, etc.

I was referring to Carl Reiner because I didn't think he was in his 90's yet so I looked up his age and saw he was born 8 years later. I have no idea which number husband he was. I just think it's neat that she married a younger man, both my grandmother's did, too.

Oh yes, I have a copy of it too. It's very good, but it doesn't stand out in my my like The Good War. I read it in college, and it introduced me to the term PAF, "Premature Anti-Fascist". The concept just blew me away -- it was a term, IIRC, the FBI coined to describe Americans who opposed Franco and Mussolini and Hitler before the US government took any official stance against them. Many old lefties found that they had been labeled as such in their FBI files.

I had to ask a friend of mine who is the parent of Young People when it was used in a reply to me on the 'Dope...was I being Dissed or praised? It means, "I agree wholeheartedly". In the 19th century they would exclaim, "Hear him! Hear him!"

Larry James (http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/8766648/U.S.-Olympic-gold-medalist-Larry-James-dies-at-61?MSNHPHMA), who won two track medals in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, has died at the age of 61. James took the silver in the 400 meters, and also helped the USA win gold in the 4x400 relay.

Yet more reassuring evidence that running will kill you. My far more sensible exercise routine revolves around chewing and sucking (things through straws).

Tetsuya Chikushi, one of Japan's last real journalists, has passed away at 73.

Sad on two counts. One: he was one of the classic "champion the rights of the little people and root out corruption" reporters that are so hard to find today, and Two: I picked the wrong Japanese reporter with cancer.

Miriam Makeba (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5i_9vA53KQLAW8LH3fNDQjM_gikNg), who gave voice to South Africa's struggle against apartheid even as she was exiled from her home country for more than thirty years, has died at the age of 76. The singer collapsed during a concert in Italy. She won the Best Folk Recording Grammy in 1965 for the album An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba, on which she teamed with Harry Belafonte.

Not a person, but certainly a "celebrity" much the same way Wall*E and R2-D2 are. RIP Mars Phoenix lander. (http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSTRE4A97FJ20081110) NASA scientists said on Monday they could no longer communicate with the Phoenix Mars Lander and were calling an effective end to its five-month-plus mission on the Red Planet.

Mission engineers last received a signal from the lander on November 2, the space agency said.

As anticipated, the seasonal decline in sunshine at the space probe's polar landing site is providing too little sunlight to recharge the lander's batteries, a situation that occurred three weeks earlier than expected because of dust storms, NASA said.

I answered the question Are familiar with MC Breed's music? "No", and found out that I was one of 37,487 to respond in that vein, while 6,782 (15%) had said "Yes". However, the news also made the Yahoo! (http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/61899279) site. Interesting that Breed's age is given as 37 in the story I linked, while yours claimed he was 36.

ETA: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MC_Breed) places his birth "ca. 1972".
