View Full Version : Should I change my username (a poll)
I mentioned in the "do you like your username" thread that my username feels dull and unimaginative in comparison to the witty and clever names that inhabit the SDMB.
So...who thinks I should change it? Who thinks I should keep it and why?

Less is more IMO.

You have a three letter name that makes sense...when the SD has one billion members you'll be able to auction it off for a fortune, while everyone else is named Meebo1239 or Quizzoo86 or Geegegoop4. ;)
I'll have you know that my real name is Meebo Quizzoo Geegegoop IV! ;)

I like Kat. :)

Change it to Jelaza, because [not necessarily in order of importance] a) I won't have to do that double-think "oh, right, kat, that's really Jelaza"; b) Jelaza is a very cool name; and c) you'll be able to do vanity searches.

IMHO...
No. Your username is just fine. Unless you have come up with something that fits you better and you have a burning need to be known as The Kat's Pajamas * or whatever.
Witty usernames are cool for a while, but once you get used to them they are just another name; just like funky names in real life. You can get tired of anything.
*or unless you want to change it to this, in which case go for it. ;)

You are allowed one change, IIRC. If you aren't sure you want to, don't do it.

Anything else would make your location less enjoyable.

Depends. What would you change it to? If you're thinking of RalphReedIsOurLastBestHope, I would say no.

Since you finally realize it's spelled "C""A""T", what name are you toiling with?
If I changed it, I would most likely change it to match up with the name I use most other places online, which would make twickster happy. ;)

And that, alone, would seem to be reason enough to do it, no? :D

But then we wouldn't have a Kat! I vote no change.

I vote no. I always vote no on username changes, though.

I see one good reason for changing your name: it's too short for you to search on.
Other than that, wait till you think of a name you really want. How about Dame Celia Mole-Strangler or Fiona Rabbit-Vacuum? :D

I believe you can do it more then once. But if a pattern of abuse is found, the mods will likely wonder whats up.

Another vote for "no change" here. "Kat"is just fine.

I'm starting to get the definite impression I'm in a minority here. :(

I think Kat is a 'cool' user name. The only drawback I see is that you can never do a vanity search.
I think right off the bat, the name shows you are one of the oldest posters as you have a meaningful 3 letter user name that many might choose.
It shows you like and respect our felines overlords and for some reason this board runs very heavy to us cat servants.
You probably engender much goodwill with such a user name without even working at it.
So, I will join the majority and suggest you retain your excellent and memorable name.

When I get used to a name, it seems a shame that it would get changed. I can understand why people do it to obscure their real-life name, but for a perfectly acceptable (and publicly anonymous) name like Kat, I can't see that there's any need.

I wish you wouldn't, but if you do, please stay curled up in a sunny spot. That's how I remember you from the glorious "a" thread.

Another vote for Kat. I tend to associate the name with women who are attractive, colorful, interesting and perhaps a tad bohemian.
Pretty cool, in other words. ;)

I like your current name, but I gotta tell ya:
It feels really nice to finally be able to do vanity searches after years and years of going without.

Keep it.
Another vote for no change! You're a 99'er, which I realize isn't really a big deal, but in my mind you're one of the "old Dopers" and if you changed your user name to something else, I probably wouldn't remember, "oh, that's Kat. Who's been here since the earth cooled." ( ;) --> As have I and many others.)
I can see changing after 8 weeks, but changing after 8 years seems more drastic, somehow.

I have wanted to change mine for a very long time. But the thing is, Nobody would know the new me. I think the only improvement you could make to kat is make it searchable. Like maybe -Kat-

I think you need to be careful of special characters. The search engine ignores some. Like ?
I just tested, it does not appear that -Kat- is searchable. I tried it with and without quotes.
