Rules, in case you are new are this: DON'T READ THE THREAD BEFORE YOU POST!

Post your responses to the questions and when there have been 50 responses, I will double the value of the response to each question (to come up with the Survey Says).
You want to post what you think the most popular answer will be. If all 50 respondents have the same answer as you, you will get 100 points like the game show. After 50 responses have been posted (including my own, since I can't keep from playing this myself), I will tabulate the results, declare the winner, and post the scoreboard. There are ten questions and 500 possible points; Diomedes, the defending champion, won with 426 points. Results of the last game are here (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9278118&postcount=60).

Good luck!

These questions were too hard, too "Trivia question"-esque, for Family Feud.

Sorry. The few times I've watched Family Feud, it seemed like they intentionally scraped from the absolute bottom of the barrel in terms of contestant IQ, so I thought Dopers would like a bit more of an intellectual challenge. And I figured everybody could name one trumpeter (everyone's heard of Louis Armstrong, I think), one country with a monarchy, one American writer, one Spanish painter (everyone's heard of Picasso, right?), one 1960s movie, one foreign president, and one college major. I will concede that I may have overestimated the average American's exposure to Spanish art, and the Israeli war thing was probably too obscure. The foreign president thing might have been a bit much, but Pervez Musharraf has been in the news a lot, so that's why I thought of it. And I have enjoyed hearing Dopers' answers to my questions.

I think I have the most interest in running these games, tabulating the scores, and formatting them in high-to-low-score format, though, so if y'all like, you can all email (not PM) me one or two questions each and I'll use the first eight or ten I get in the next game. Sound good to everyone?

Don't worry about factual errors (although, FTR, the UK does not have a king; Vicente Fox is not the current President of Mexico; and Branford Marsalis plays the sax, while his brother Wynton plays trumpet). The point is to try to score as many points as possible. You could put in a prime minister instead of a president and a misspelled Australian footballer instead of a Spanish painter for all I care.

Don't worry about factual errors.
Yeah, I was just smiley-smacking because of the sheer blindness of forgetting about the telephone entirely, and thus not realizing it would probably be the most popular response. Ah well, I suppose that's what makes the game worth playing.

Poop. Because some of my gut answers were totally not correct, but would be what the average dummy (HEY WHO CALLED ME A DUMMY) might say. Oh well, I stand by my answers. Mostly. :D

Before I do any counting, good luck again to everyone who played, and thanks for playing. I would also like to remind everyone that I am still accepting submissions for questions for Family Feud Part IX by email (not PM!). If there's enough interest, I might split off a Trivial Feud game for harder, more serious, searchable questions like the ones in this thread.

Two enchiladas, one strong IPA and seemingly about an hour later:

Hooray! Counting's over! OK, here comes the scoring rubric (by responses, not points). One-entry-only responses don't score points, so they're not in the lists. Any responses where it's reasonably obvious that the different posters meant the same thing (different spellings of the same President, or England/UK/Great Britain for having a king, or different names for the same Israeli war) were considered the same response. "Pass" was considered a response.

1. Famous trumpeter

Louis Armstrong 27
Dizzy Gillespie 9
Miles Davis 7
Al Hirt 2
Chuck Mangione 2
Wynton Marsalis 2

2. Means of communication

Telephone 34
Cellphone 8
Email 7

(If you said both telephone and cellphone, you got counted for cellphone. Be less specific next time! ;) )

3. Language

English 36
Spanish 11

4. Country with King

Spain 22

What is the best format for the responses? Do you like the question repeated? Do you like the answers numbered? Does it matter? Maybe the instructions should be amended let us know, making your scoring job easier. Just a thought.

Hostile Dialect
12-19-2007, 11:22 AM
Since you asked, the biggest things that respondents can do to make (my method of) scoring easier are numbering their answers, making their answers stick out, and minimizing the line spaces between answers. So this is great:

1. OJ Simpson
2. Bonobo sex
3. Klingon
4. Funkytown

And so is this:

5. Name an American writer. Ricky Martin

6. Name a Spanish painter. RuPaul

7. What was the best movie of the 1960s? Deep Throat

But this is a little harder to score:

8. Name a President of a country other than the United States.

Austin Powers
9. Name a war that occurred in Israel.

War of the Worlds

10. What is the most popular college major?
Applied Funk

Thanks for asking! I'm thinking of starting a Trivial Feud game fairly soon with more questions like these ones, since it turns out that Feud Tucker is a more temporary condition than I thought.
