Since the other Golden Globes thread is hopelessly mired down in talk about the strike, I thought I'd start a thread for people who just want to talk about the Golden Globes. The GG party is definitely cancelled, and the winners will be announced via a press conference this Sunday evening. NBC has given up its right to exclusively broadcast the press conference, so anyone can broadcast it. It'll be, for one, streamed over the Internet by E! Online (yay for me).

The stripped-down Globes is scheduled to air live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the longtime home of what is normally a glamorous, star-studded gala, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

NBC, which had gone from exclusive home of the Golden Globes ceremony to exclusive home of the Golden Globes press conference, taking a multimillion-dollar hit in terms of ad revenue in the process, had been planning to treat the Globes as an exclusive network program with an all-NBC cast of characters. By moving it to the news division, which is currently in sync with its writing staff, it was hoping to avoid further conflict with the WGA.

The network said Friday that its programming schedule has not changed in light of the recent shakeup. As of now, Going for Gold, a two-hour Dateline NBC special featuring film clips and Matt Lauer interviewing some of the nominees, will precede the conference, which will be followed by a repeat of American Gladiators.

Thanks to the media free-for-all, viewers have alternatives to suit their Globes-watching needs, including the live E! News Special: Golden Globes 2008 hosted by Ryan Seacrest on E! Entertainment Television.

And for those far away from their TV sets Sunday night, E! Online (a division of E! Networks) will be streaming the news conference live.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA, the Globes people) were going to give their "Cecil B. DeMille Award" to Steven Spielberg this year, but decided to wait and give it to him at next year's Golden Globes, which presumably will be telecast.

Here are the nominees for movies and TV. Most of these names from movies will pop up during the Oscar nominations too (on January 22).

As I am sure most of you know, the Golden Globes are chosen by about 65 old-fart, foreign correspondents who have cushy jobs in the US reviewing films and television shows for their home countries. They have a different slant as to what is good and bad.

Granted, they sometimes can see above the hype and pick winners that deserve an award, but often they pick winners based upon who they think their home country would consider the best. Nothing wrong with that, but hardly representative of the US populace.

This year's winners were great, and it would have been nice to see the winners get up on stage and give a speech. Julian Schnabel won director! I can't get over that! I'm a huge Coen Brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson fan, but I loved The Diving Bell and the Butterfly so I was thrilled for him. I would like to have seen his shock and surprise at winning. I wanted to see Marion Cotillard up there. Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Day-Lewis, Johnny Depp, Brad Bird, Tim Burton (if he accepted for Sweeney Todd), anyone from Atonement because that win was NOT expected and their reaction would have been cute, so I wanted to see them. It's such a shame.

I just really really REALLY hope that something is worked out for the Oscars. This is a great year for movies, and a lot of great movies/people are going to be nominated, and many of the best ones are frontrunners, for once.

People who bitch and complain about the (usual) length of these things are perfectly free to not watch them, and read the results on the internet or in the next day's newspaper.

They generally have pretty good taste. Not that I've always agreed with them, or that they always pick the absolute best of the year, but I have agreed with or at least understood their choices more often than not. Last night I would like to have seen There Will Be Blood or No Country For Old Men win, but Atonement won, and that's ok. It's an excellent movie, and I understand perfectly why they chose it. At least TWBB and No Country were nominated. That's pretty cool in itself.

The Oscars aren't representative of the US populace either (thank god). The US populace has an awards ceremony of their own, it was held last week. Yay for Johnny Depp, for "Sweeney Todd" and "Atonement". I'm glad "Juno" and Ellen Page are getting recognition. It is indeed a good year for movies.

The best director win was a surprise but I'm fine with that; the movie was great. I'm a Coen fan though so I'm always going to be pulling for them.

Has there ever been a bigger lock for Best Actor though? I'm glad Depp was in a different category, that's for sure. Daniel Day Lewis is gonna kill anyone he comes up against for here on in.

Plus, if the Oscars follow the same path, there's some comfort to be known that several of the big likely winners (Day-Lewis, Christie, the Coens) have won Oscars before, so someone enterprising might put up the YouTubes of those. ;)

Meh, I thought Atonement was a good but not great movie. It isn't anywhere near the same class as either There Will Be Blood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, or No Country for Old Men. I hardly understand most of the choices that The Golden Globes make? I think DMark's comments about the makeup of the HFPA carries some specific weight here--of all the films nominated, Atonement has the most international cache--it's the most "epic" and the most European. Do despite being the worst of the lot (I would say by a large margin; I don't think it comes anywhere to resembling "good"), it's exactly the type of film the Globes eat up (note that Babel won the Globe over The Departed last year).
