Little Nemo

READ THESE RULES. THIS GAME HAS DIFFERENT RULES THAN THE OTHER FAMILY FEUD THREADS.

First off, don't read the other posts until you've submitted your own post. That hasn't changed.

Second, read the questions and post an answer to each question. You don't need to repeat the questions but please number your answers to make it easier for me to add them up.

Third - and here's where it starts to gets weird - once fifty people have submitted their answers, I'll add up the responses. But here's the difference in this thread - the most popular answer to each question will be thrown out and all of the people who gave that answer will score zero points for that question. If two (or more) answers tie for the top place, both will be thrown out. Also any answer that's simply wrong will also score zero points (although I'll interpret the questions and answers broadly). After that, you get one point for every person besides yourself who gave the same answer you did.

So you want to guess a good answer but not a great answer. You want to ideally guess the second best answer to each question. But keep in mind, every one else is trying to do the same, so the what looks like the second best answer may end up being the one most people pick.

For question ten, I assume you meant an integer. Since this isn't the "Dead Pool", I wouldn't score any "unique pick points" by choosing 8.675309? No, probably not.I intentionally designed the scoring system to prevent people from simply going for the most obscure possible answers. (Which is also why I chose several questions in which the field of possible answers was limited.)

We've got forty five responses so far. Only five more to go. I expect to have this wrapped up tonight.

The current numbers are:

Oak = 11
Maple = 10
Elm = 8
Apple = 2
Ash = 2
Beech = 2
Pine = 2
Larch = 2
Palm
Birch
Fir
Sequoia
Mahogany
Poplar

Down to the wire on this one. Oak, maple, and elm are all so close that any of them could end up scoreless in the top spot or a tie. The other entries are all looking to be one pointers at best.

Midway = 11
Battle of the Bulge = 9
Iwo Jima = 8
Normandy = 7
Stalingrad = 2
Battle of Britain = 2
Kursk = 2
Bataan
Verdun
Dunkirk
Okinawa

Pretty much the same situation as the tress with four answers fighting for the top spot.

Eric Idle = 18
John Cleese = 11
Terry Jones = 5
Michael Palin = 4
Graham Chapman = 3
Terry Gilliam = 3
The dead parrot

Eric Idle has a lock on the scoreless top place now so John Cleese will be the big scorer here. The big question here is whether LilyoftheValley will be allowed to remain a member on this board if she doesn't know any members of Monty Python.

Condoleezza Rice = 15
Colin Powell = 12
Donald Rumsfeld = 7
Dick Cheney
Michael Mukasey
Michael Brown
Alberto Gonzales
Karl Rove
Paul O'Neill
George W Bush
Robert M. Gates
Henry Paulson
John Ashcroft
Margaret Spellings

A tip for people running future Family Feuds: a good question would be "Pick a way to misspell Secretary of State Rice's first name."

Bishop = 13
Rook = 13
Pawn = 7
Queen = 5
King = 4
Knight = 2
Rice?

Bishop and Rook have been neck and neck all game. We'll have to see if Darth Sensitive's bold move in guessing "rice" pays off.

Titanic = 9
Ben Hur = 3
The Godfather = 3
Braveheart = 2
Casablanca = 2
Crash = 2
Gone With The Wind = 2
Shakespeare in Love = 2
Unforgiven = 2
Amadeus
American Beauty
Brokeback Moutain
Chicago
The Departed
Forrest Gump
Gandhi
Lawrence of Arabia
Million Dollar Baby
On Golden Pond
Philadelphia
Platoon
The Return of the King
Rocky
Schindler's List
Silence of the Lambs
The Sting
Pass

Nobody's getting a lot of points here. Titanic will be scoreless and there's a whole bunch of singletons. Even the winners are looking to all be one or two pointers.

Lestat = 18
Dracula = 12
Nosferatu = 8
Angel = 2
Spike = 2
Barnabas Collins
Blacula
Count Chocula

Lestat will be the scoreless one here with Dracula looking like the big winner.

Star Trek = 7
Firefly = 6
Battlestar Galactica = 5
Doctor Who = 5
Stargate SG-1 = 4
The X-Files = 4
Babylon 5 = 2
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century = 2
Outer Limits = 2
Space: 1999 = 2
V = 2
Journeyman
Mystery Science Theater 3000
Time Tunnel
Twilight Zone

A very tight race that's too close to call.

Tiger = 12
Leopard = 9
Lion = 6
Jaguar = 5
Panther = 4
Cheetah = 3
Mountain Lion = 2
Cougar = 2
Puma = 2

I had to make a decision here to just go ahead and score by names rather than try to figure out species. So as far as scoring is concerned a leopard and a panther and a jaguar and a cougar are all different animals.

Seven = 11
Six = 10
Eight = 8
Four = 5
Ten = 4
Three = 4
Nine = 3

A very surprising outcome. Six, seven, and eight are way out ahead of the others and one, two, and five haven't been picked at all.

Oh well. It was different, I must say, and fun too. Thanks for running it, Little Nemo!

Little Nemo
01-14-2008, 04:53 PM
I would like to hear what people were thinking when they guessed their answers. Did you have a strategy or did you just wing it? Were their answers that you consciously avoided because you thought they'd be too popular? Were their answers that surprised you?

I think it's ironic that Justin Bailey, who didn't even know what the rules were when he made his choices, did so well.

cmkeller
01-14-2008, 05:26 PM
I didn't do very well here. I think a problem is that when a lot of people try to think of a "second-most-popular" answer, that ends up being the most popular. I know I wrote Eric Idle because I thought the most popular Monty Python member would be John Cleese.

I decided that I'd start the next game (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=451469) myself, rather than being the type who complains but does nothing about it.

I was thinking that since most people would probably avoid the most obvious answer, that's the one I picked and hoped that enough people would think the same way. It paid off.

Crud,

Eric Idle, because of course everyone would pick John Cleese.
Lestat, because of course everyone would pick Dracula.
Rook, because of course everyone would pick Queen.
GWB isn't in his own cabinet? That's just weird.

Though I'm glad I'm not the only one (by a long shot) who picked an Oscar winner that wasn't an Oscar winner.

That was fun. Thanks.

Darth Sensitive

Ah! I'm the one who answered "rice" in the chess piece question.

I meant "rook" but answered Condoleeza above that. But I got the same number of points (42!) either way, and this way, I added some surreality to your days.

Freudian Slit

So what were the "right" answers?

Little Nemo
01-14-2008, 08:38 PM
So what were the "right" answers?The highest score anyone could have gotten in this game was 89 (Maple; the Battle of the Bulge; John Cleese; Colin Powell; Bishop; Ben Hur, Crash, The Godfather, or Shakespeare in Love; Dracula; Firefly or Doctor Who; Leopard; Six or Eight). In theory a person could score a maximum of 230 points in this game.

as_u_wish
01-14-2008, 11:41 PM
I decided everyone else would be thinking too hard, so I'd just answer what I thought would be the "right" answer. I usually pick quite a few number two or three answers--so I figured following my instinct would work. I did get three zeros--but a nice respectable 51 none-the-less.

Justin_Bailey

I think it's ironic that Justin Bailey, who didn't even know what the rules were when he made his choices, did so well.

Woo! 2nd place!

And I don't think it's that weird, I normally finish somewhere in the top half of the pack with a few number 1's and a lot of number 2's. So a game centered around number 2's really works for me.

But in some cases I just got damn lucky, I was sure John Cleese would have been the top MP pick. But he wasn't, so windfall for me.

Wow tenth place. I'm surprised I did that well. :)
Like just about everyone else has said, I too chose Eric Idle because John Cleese would undoubtedly be the number one choice. :rolleyes:

I chose "Science Fiction Theater" for the Sci-Fi show. I notice it isn't even listed in the tally. Wow, I really went way beyond picking the 2nd place spot for that category.

Hey this was fun (and not just because I finished in the 80th percentile). Heck, I like playing the Celebrity Dead Pool in which I usually finish in the zeroth percentile. :)

I hadn't heard of the show and I wrongly assumed you actually meant Mystery Science Theater 3000. For what it's worth they were both single picks so they scored the same.
