My printer is dead?

OK, I have a Brother HL-2040 Laser printer. One year after I got it, it no longer prints. The lights ALL light up, but the fan doesn't come on and of course it doesn't print.

Is there something simple I should do? I opened everything and put it back, checked the paper tray etc. Yes, it could be that it needs new ink, but wouldn't the print quality go down or just that light come on? And why would the fan not come on? :confused:

Sure, I can just get another but the SDMB is such a great source I figured that I'd beg for help 1st.

I have a Brother HL series. I don't remember the number, but it could be a 2040 (it's my printer at work and I am at home right now). On the front, there is a door to open to remove the toner cartridge. Take out the toner cartridge, turn it upside down and shake it. Return it to right side up and reinstall it into the printer. Close the door. To the left of the door, where the three lights are, there is a button. This button must be pressed to reset the printer any time the front door is opened.

On my printer, the top LED and the middle LED blink if the paper is out. The middle LED and the bottom LED blink if it is out of toner. If it is out of paper (duh) or toner, it will not print at all. There is no degradation of print quality -- it just refuses to print.
