View Full Version : So. Who's for Risk?

We seemed to have some interest in playing some online Risk in this thread.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=452346

So, I've created a game in each of Sijinn's linked game forums.

Grand Strategy, Game #84233 My User Name there is Zaphod23

Conquer Club, Game #1660768 same user name.

I've chosen 8 players and adjacent reinforcements, meaning each army can move one territory at the end of your turn. IIRC. No secret alliances, everything else is the default. Hope that works for everyone.

Well, the Conquer Club game is well underway, I hope it's mostly Dopers, there's some names I don't recognize, but Y'all wouldn't know me as Zaphod23, either.

The Grand Strategy Game is also underway. I hope I didn't close these games out by starting my turn. The Conquer Club started without me, but in the GS game, I was first, I think.

Good Luck, everyone. If more Dopers want in, please start other games and post the forum and game number, eh?

Please feel free to start another, I don't think there are any dopers in my GS game, unless it's xxoxx, who has a 1/22/08 join date.

GreedySmurf made it into my CC game, is Dexanthia a doper?

It seems you have to be a premium member to make a game private.

Yep I made it into the Conquer club game.

But I couldn't get the Grand Strategy website to run properly for me, so I'll just keep myself to Conquer Club I think.

I'd join your game, if you let me know details, Shijinn. I'm knocked out of the Conquer Club game, already.

Grand Strategy is less intuitive, but not bad, once you get used to it.

I dunno, Ostro. I got emails from Conquer Club, GS you just have to check on periodically. Check your details? Can you log back in?

Multiple accounts are frowned on, Sijinn. Just sayin'.

standard game - conquer the whole map to win
sequential turns
flat rate - because escalating is all about timing and luck imho.
adjacent fortifications - unlimited is cheap.
no fog of war

I'm not sure how it works as I have played exactly one turn online and I haven't set up a game before. Can we set up a private game and get it on everyone's list and wait for a sixth Doper to join? I wouldn't be adversed to playing with 5 players either. I do love me some Risk though.

me first? huh huh could I? I am in a very weak position in this game. Fortunately, in another game, I seem to be holding on to Asia very tightly. Too bad I can't translate it here.

I tried some of the other boards, too. Canada plays well. World 2.1 takes too long. Doodle Earth is very silly. I also have a Space and a CCU (Conquor Club Univ.) game going on. But I learned my lesson this weekend. No more than one long game at a time. I di play a lot of Speed games, but that requires everyoe be present and accounted for since it is a five minute per turn game.

Also we waited 4 days for you, "Zaphod", so we scrapped that one and started a 5 person game. How do you feel about alternate maps? I am on Conquer Club as well but haven't joined any of the SMDB games yet, didn't see this thread.

I did pay to be a member so I can join more than 4 games at a time. I usually have at least 10 going at a time with up to 20 going on the high end.

The "must do" thing for this site is to go to the forums and read about the add-ons available through an app called grease monkey. The main one you need to get is BOB. This address all the who can I attack, and visibility issues you may have on any map. It improved my game drastically. It also gives you good stats and army counts which help alot on tactics. I used to do all of that stuff in my head, now I can join more games and let BOB add up how many armies each person has and what their next bonus will be etc...

I will join the next game that starts up if I see it in time.

she. Also we waited 4 days for you, "Zaphod", so we scrapped that one and started a 5 person game. How do you feel about alternate maps? Since I went "premium" I can have as many concurrent games as I like. One of my favorite boards is Australia. Wanna play a game on that board? I'll set one up.

Actually, I just got elimated from a "Great Lakes" game. I think I want to start one of those again. It's game # 1886480, password (all lowercase) sdmb. It's a four person game, so I'll need two other players. I also gave it "unlimited fortifying" because I have found that makes the game more interesting

Awright, I'm in. Sorry to make you wait for me, before. I didn't realize. I'm interested but probably won't make the cut. I haven't ponied up for premium, and I've got four running. Two of them could turn sour on me REAL quick, but I'll probably end up lingering a bit.

GreaseMonkey is a tool that works within your browser. I have only tried it with Firefox. The script that it loads is specific for ConquerClub. For me it is well worth it and was easy to do. Take a look at the forum on CC to see how to do it.

we should play a doubles or a triples game when we're through with one or two of the current games. They're team games, 2 on 2 or 3 on 3, teams are based on the order of joining the game, and you can fortify your teammates' countries when you're done with your attacks

eta official description:
To play a team game, try doubles, triples and quadruples. Quadruples games must be played with 8 players, triples games with 6 players, doubles games with 4 or 6 or 8. Teammates are determined by the sequence of players, for example the first two players and second two players make up two teams in a doubles game. In team games, you can deploy on and fortify to your teammate's territories. The score is calculated per team. When a player is auto-kicked in a team game, the first surviving teammate inherits the armies and cards.

I really like the World 2.0 map, although it is a BIG map and tends to make for a pretty long game. Asia & Europe not so hot on, but maybe that's just because the 2 games I've played on each I've lost :smack:

first, see post # 105 (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9519694&postcount=105). Then consider that all three team members gain points on a win, regardless of who the last one standing is.

I do have (non-doper) friends here who would make moves for me. That's not too much of a cheat, I think, in the circumstances. Moving a cat across country while conquering worlds requires some finesse.

I meant non-sequential free-for-all games. This does take some getting used to in playing.

At first I had the same opinion of Escalating, unfair etc. It is really a skill to manage your cards, sometimes not getting a card, forcing other turn-ins. Overextending to knock someone out for an extra card or two. It is well worth the effort to try some escalating games for fun.

Adversary will soon stop me dead in my tracks. My Africa holdings are tenuous, at best. I'm very uncertain at this point.

Everyone Ignore the Canadians, Canadians have your best interests at heart. And this year, we are offering everyone free medical care.

The Canadians? Huh everyone knows that behind that friendly innocous peaceful facade they are actually violently oppressive overlords seeking nothing but total world domination.

We Australians on the other hand are just little Aussie battlers doing their best to get along in the world and are no threat to anyone, and can be safely ignored as minor players on the world stage.

We should stop this bickering, Greedy Smurf. Aren't we all part of one happy United Kingdom?

And your troops would be much happier doing no more operations in Alaska, I'm sure.

And... You could keep your milkshake to yourself.

I will most likely be ceasing operations across the Bering Straight, once I have completed my neighbourly military assistance program to the oppressed siberian peoples to allow them to free themselves from the yoke of tyranny. :D

well, since this game is winding down, I've set up a new game, #2252380, usual password, World 2.0 (more territory to conquer), Freestyle (since we seem to like this play), Escalating Card Sets (even tho I am not a fan), Unlimited Fortifying (which makes much more sense), and, for the first time in our group, Terminator style (rubs hands gleefully) which means, if you wipe someone off the board, you immediately score Conquer points, instead of having to wait until the end of the game (and if you've been wiped off, you immediately lose points). This does not, in any way, affect game play, only scoring. See you there. Aloha. ;)

Sounds good. I might hang off signing up until after weekend.

In regards to that I made a comment in our current game chat about this weekend.

I am leaving tomorrow lunchtime for a long weekend away, in a lakeside rainforest chalet :) (1st wedding anniversary get away).

I won't be back till Sunday afternoon, and it's highly unlikely I'll have internet access over the weekend. With a some luck I may only miss a single turn, but with it being freestlye I may miss more, and I believe they kick you from the game if you miss 3 turns.

So apologies in advance if I get booted, which will sort of stuff up the game suddenly leaving all that territory neutral.

Although the mad scramble for neutral territories would be interesting to watch :D

I half expected to get back to see I had been eliminated. Thanks guys for not destroying me. Although I doubt it was through lack of trying :p

I do have a lot of work to do to get back to where I was, but let's see how I go.

I've signed up for the new game two - It'll be interesting to see how a terminator game works.

#2324822 is the new game number. Our standard password is sdmb all lowercase.

You select "join a game" and type the game number into the appropriate field, then the password and you're in. When we have all 6 players, the game starts. What's your ConquerClub name (some of us have different screen names over there. Not me, but some of us ;))?

It's an option in the board game. The board game gives you the three different card trade options (None, Flat, Escalating) with any of them being equally valid to use.

I only ever played Flat Rate. And after a few games in Conquer Club on escalating I know why.

I was thinking of joining a few more games, but to be honest I'm bit nervous about playing against other players with so much experience. I don't want to be the player that wrecks the game for everyone.

How did you guys find playing your first few games?

anyrose
04-28-2008, 04:15 AM
I like it. I've been playing Risk for a few decades; playing on line just means I don't have to beg my friends to play just one more game

word of advice for a CC newbie - stay away from the Doodle Earth map - it looks easy, but unless you get a good starting position, it's impossible to win.
Also stay away from Fog of War games until you're more confident.

welcome to the game exclamation!! unless you're in a team game with partners there's really no chance of 'wrecking' the game for anyone. so just play, enjoy yourself and ignore the whiners that plague every online game.

i'll sit out this next one to make room, have fun everyone!

I prefer it. Isn't that how the board game works? (Or maybe the Mac implementation I played 10 years ago?) GreedySmurf has answered, but in my experience, escalating is the preferred variant for board games because most people will want the game to end some time before sundown. ;)

oh and anyrose, becareful of fog of war games. that variant is too susceptible to cheating imho.

Thanks for the welcome and advice, shijinn and The Sonoran Lizard King!

I know there's no comparison to the real thing, but I've been playing some online versions against AI players. Practice which will be almost completely useless against real players, but I've gotten to try out a few different strategies.

maybe i'm just cynical. if you can't see the board you can't be sure your opponents aren't up to no good.

Well, if you report them, they're not secret, are they? You scheme and plan in the game chat, just not 'off line' as it were. You can declare in the game rules absolutely no alliances beforehand, can't you?

Oh, and Congrats to moguai and the blue horde for another victory(2134811). Damn, I was close, too. Closest I've been, anyway.

officially, only secret alliances are not allowed, and these can be a tad difficult to spot if you have fog of war on. unofficially, you can do anything if everyone agrees.
