It is starting soon. (OK, 3 hours away...)

Here is the thread for rooting, (respectful) smack talk and wishful thinking.

I am rooting for the Giants (and probably wishful thinking) . But I believe that the Pats will win.

Have fun! I won't be watching - as I told my brother last week, the day my cousins get a big ol' tub of beer, some hot dogs and chips and gather around the television to watch the Oscars is the day that I will do the same at the next Super Bowl.

I will, however, be logging in later to MSNBC to see the commercials and vote for the best one.

But have fun, one and all - party hearty!

We played it smart -- we had to run to Target this morning, so we made sure to buy a passel of new books and toys for The Littlest Briston. My daughter means the world to me, but I'm going to do all I can to keep her occupied from 6:30 on. :)

Oh, and GO GIANTS!!!

I have $19 riding on the Pats.

BTW, what is everyone munching on during the game...besides chili, that is? I've got a pepperoni, onion, mushroom, roasted garlic and tomato pizza lined up.

So, yeah, go Patriots

Chili, wings, chili cheese dip, various chips and dips, and whatever everyone else brings. I know there's a seven-layer dip coming, but I have no idea what everyone else is bringing.

My roomie and his brother are grilling up some ribs and chicken, and I plan to make some wings, and I'll also be getting some chips, dip, and so forth (I should probably go out and get those now...)

Let's see: good half-time entertainment, (hopefully) good commercials, and of course a storied Super Bowl game.

The game New York Giants vs. New England Patriots - on paper, but its really Manning vs. Brady. That's what I'll be watching for.

I can't believe this game is almost one-quarter over already. Time flies when you're up by 3 (however fleetingly).

Toomer totally got away with a facemask on that D-back. It looks like the Pats are going to have to beat the officials as well as the Giants.

What a crappy way for Eli to lose his streak of not throwing interceptions. He hits Steve Smith right on the hands but the receiver manages to tip it right into the air? Ouch.

Marley23
02-03-2008, 06:18 PM
The Giants looked very strong on that first drive, but they're giving up big chunks on every play on defense. Well shut my mouth, maybe they've actually made a stop! No punts for almost the first 20 minutes is pretty cool - this game is really flying by so far.

Brady doesn't look especially good, but so far he hasn't needed to be.

They just showed some aerial coverage of the stadium and it looked sundown over the stadium (with streetlights already on), but here in NM it's still nice and sunny. Somehow I doubt that's live coverage.

This game is as boring as Troy Aikman, but better to have him than Moose and Goose I guess. Aikman damn near came close to implying the INT was Eli's fault, the moron. And is Brady going to pass the fucking ball? If he can't, he shouldn't be in the game.

Marley23
02-03-2008, 06:28 PM
Two sacks in a row after they rarely got close during the first quarter! (Aside from the first play.) Whether it's a trend or not, that's going to increase the energy of the game.

Becasue the play resulted in a first down, and I assume that penalty doesnt give a loss of down.

Blah blah blah. This canard comes out every year during the Super Bowl, usually to set the table for the after-game excuses for losing. Give it a rest.
First of all, the Patriots are still going to win going away, so no "table-setting" is necessary, and second of all, I've been watch NE get screwed by biased officaiting all year. Did you see the replay of that play I was talking about? The facemask was undisputable. I wasn't imaging things. Even Aikman admitted that Toomer got away with one there.

Diogenes the Cynic

I guess so, but it seems like there should be a loss of down for a batted fumble. What's to stop a team from doing it on purpose on a screwed 3rd down play to get an extra down?

Marley23
02-03-2008, 06:46 PM
Classic Patriots, that first down on the screen to Stallworth. The Giants would have been set up with some good field position there, too.

Then you should try the teenage chick flick Chasing Liberty, and turn that frown upside-down. (CL is the story of a First Daughter going AWOL in Europe, companioned by a cute guy who turns out to be an undercover Secret Service bodyguard. It's basically a remake of Roman Holiday. Shit, what do I have in the office pool - is it Pats 0 and Giants 7, or Giants 0 and Pats 7?

I forget the first year I watched the Super Bowl all the way through, but this is the dullest one I've seen in a while. Blowouts are exciting in the beginning, at least, but this has been a pretty even-keel game with few big plays or bursts of excitement. I think the Boss reception on the last drive may have been the longest play.

It's funny you should say that; I actually only caught about five minutes of the first half and saw three critical calls that were quite obviously wrong and all in the Giants' favour. I thought "Huh - the officiating is always pretty bad, but isn't that strange" and then we ended up watching "Battlestar Galactica" until almost the end.

Still the Giants scored 14 of their points in the fourth quarter and so the horrible calls I saw didn't help with that.

They were 18-0 and up against a team that, statistically, they should have ripped apart limb from limb, one of the worst teams - if not absolutely the worst team - to ever appear in a Super Bowl. They led going into the fourth quarter and led with less than a minute left, and they blew it.

Of course the Giants deserved to win, but the Patriots choked, and they choked big time, and deserve to be called chokers. They came out defendinga perfect season, put on a subpar, uninspired effort, STILL had a lead, and blew it. If that ain't a choke, I don't know what is.

Most of the fixed officiating involves non-calls against gang-raping defensive backs, facemasks, and other illegal contact. They also rang up the Patriots a couple of times for false starts which were really caused by jumping D-Linemen.

The League was embarrassed about Spygate so obviously the word came down to screw the Pats. I think the packers were actually intended to b the desinated "champions" but they unexpectedly choked in the NFC final game. The officials can't stop Favre from throwing game killing picks.

Whereas I think that if a deer has managed to survive long enough to have ten points on its antlers, if it avoided hunters and cars and stayed off private property and didn't starve to death, it deserves to live. It's earned it. The Patriots survived for sixteen games; why do you want them to lose?"

Boss: "Because the Giants are that other, younger deer who has the guts to take on the alpha male, find its vulnerable spots and go for it. If the ten-pointer can't use his antlers to defend itself, then it hasn't earned it."

Also, the NY coach approached Belichek during that stampede before the last second of play. Belichek didn't rebuff him as far as I know.

The rush on Brady was terrific. The way to beat the Patriots has always been to keep the ball out of his hands and knock his ass down when you can't. Everyone knew it, but no one seemed able to do it. The Giants did it. Like the Steelers a couple years ago, they played their best football at the end of the season, and they earned the championship.

Well done, Giants.

The past two Super Bowls have been about getting monkeys off the backs of the Manning brothers. Hope they're happy. ;)

The Patriots defense played a pretty good game in limiting the Giants to two touchdowns, it's the Patriot's offense who played poorly/were dominated which cost them the game. I remember thinking at the beginning of the game that the Pats looked tired and unpracticed. Did anybody notice any signs that Brady's "injuries" were affecting his play?

He sailed a bunch of deep throws. That's a prtetty good indication that he couldn't plant good on his ankle. He's usually got a laser beam on those rainbows to Moss. I do think his ankle might have been more screwed up than he was letting on. High ankle sprains can really hinder QBs on deep throws.

I have to say that one of the most surprising things to me, a Steeler fan, was that Plaxico Burress actually caught the ball in the end zone at a critical moment.

He also was entirely correct that it would be a relatively low scoring game. Of course, Tom Brady had a good laugh, suggesting that predicting the Patriots would score only 17 points was crazy. Tom Brady is a whiny pussy, and the Giants D kicked his ass.

I thought it really sucked that they gave Hoodsie a review of the 12 man on the field play, and that they called it in his favor. I'm just glad that it didn't make a difference. The Patriots luck ran out, right at the right time, and it was beautiful.

Given the Giants were a distant wildcard spot.

Given the whole de-emphasis on beating the Giants but total emphasis on 'achieving perfection'.

Given the whole 'I'm going to stroll around Manhattan in a cast before the game as a goof.'

Given the whole 'Not only do our teams out-class yours, but our fans out-class yours' POV of the Herald.

Yeah. That's a Choke.

My girlfriend, in Boston, says she's not really mad that the Pats lost the game, so much as disappointed that because of it Wes Welker won't win MVP, because "he's so cute."

Man, Belichick looked dejected. Like Charlie Brown after the spelling bee. I can see him staying in his pitch-black room all day tomorrow. Tom Brady will have to go in and say, "But you know what, coach?...The world didn't come to an end."

Reason I have Charlie Brown on the brain, of course, is because of that commercial! I LOVE that for once, the round-headed kid won something!

I was thinking after the game of Charlie Brown, too- an old Peanuts strip where Linus tells Charlie Brown about a football game he saw on TV and how happy the team was when they won and how exciting everything is. Charlie's response: how did the other team feel?

Not only was that Coke ad the best of the night, but it was prophetic: a true underdog (not Underdog) overcoming bigger and more powerful forces. You're a good team, New York Giants.

What an idiot! She should have offered to do that if the Pats WON! That would have been their incentive!

And mobo85, great analysis on that commercial!

Re: Burress

Happiest man on the field. He's been getting shit all week for his final score guess.

Re: Choking

The giants D played great and the really deserved to be MVP, especially after they stopped the drive, then they had a stupid 12 man penalty then they stopped them on forth down to get the ball back. It wasn't a choke, the Giants D played out of it's mind.

The Pats' opponents have been in games the last few weeks so the fact that a team could beat them doesn't mean that THEY choked.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but that last deep deep bomb to Moss was right on the money. It was a perfect throw that was well covered. Everyone in the group that I was watching the game with had their jaws on the floor.

Oh, there was ref favortism! :p New England's been shoved down our throats as the flawless perfect machine, and now the myth is broken. Don't be a Hateriot, it was a damn good game! Those guys were Giants, and they just tore at Brady the whole game (who I still dislike for the Bridget Bridget Moynahan thing, sorry I just have a crush on her). At least whoever one they had the right confetti.

That was a nailbiter!

Unreal. The most amazing thing to me is that it wasn't a fluky win. I figured that for the Giants to have a shot, they'd have to block a punt, recover four fumbles, or return a couple of kicks for TDs. But they just outplayed the other team. It was amazing.

Oh, and what's up Dio's ass? I mean, he's been generally grumpy for a couple of years now, but this is beyond the pale.

I can't believe the Pats lost. :(

My son (11 years old) has watched every game this season. He was never much of a football fan before this year, but he really started getting more and more interested in the game as the season went on.

He just broke down and cried at the end of the game. :( I had to give him a hug and a talk about how all good things come to and end, you've got to take the bad with the good, etc. Poor kid.

Nah, the real lesson of this is the only "sport" to watch is pro-wrestling. That way if the guy you like loses you can tell yourself that's because it's fixed and you'd be right.

Yay! The Giants are champs. They did it for my dad (a huge Giant fan who passed away in September).

One thing that hasn't yet been discussed was that Belichick, for once, got outcoached. It took him until the late 3rd/ early 4th quarter to have his receivers run shorter routes, even though it was pretty obvious the offensive line couldn't protect Brady on the longer routes.

And Belichick had one of the all-time coaching gaffes in the 2nd quarter, when the Pats went for it on 4th and 13 at the Giants 31. With a kicker who has the leg strength to kick it that far. And in an indoor stadium! Not that the kick (about 48 yds) is a gimme, but it's better than 4th and 13! And, as it turned out, they needed those 3 points.......

It's a quite remarkable coincidence that that very very bad team came within a few points of defeating them in the regular season, then. Amazing.

How do you feel about Eli now?

That 3 sack evasion and pass to Tyree was one of the greatest plays in Superbowl history.

The defense was incredible. They shut down the "greatest offense" in NFL history and rattled the unrattleable Brady!

If they had missed the kick, the Giants would have gotten the ball at the spot of the kick (which would have been the 38), so the Giants would have gotten better field position from a missed kick thn a failed conversion attemp. Going for it was actually a lower risk, higher reward play.

But the chances of hitting a 48 yard FG are much higher than converting a 4th and 13.

It's weird, I wasn't that surprised Belichick went for the 4th and 13. I thought the 48 yard field goal was high risk and a punt was only likely to net an extra 25 yards. The Pats are suppose to have the best offense ever, why not go for it.

Hey Dio, just so you know, when the refs swallow the whistles and let the players play, that's what's known as GOOD officiating. Not sure what sport you watch, but when the refs roll out a bunch of pussy calls, it makes NFL games suck.

Looks like Eli has one thing Tom Brady lacks: a true signature play, on par with Montana's "the catch" and Elway's helicopter.

How about that class of 2004, eh? It's not looking too shabby against the class of 83. Big Ben, Eli and Rivers have now combined for the same number of rings as Elway, Marino and Kelly. The youngsters don't have anywhere near the kind of statistical proficiency as those guys yet, but toss in a couple more rings and I think they'd hold their own in the conversation. (And I'm almost positive Rivers will get at least one.)

I wasn't surprised either, as it's right in that sweet spot where it makes some sense to go for it, and it's totally Belichick's style. I'm just not buying that it was the absolute smartest tactical move in that situation.

Actually, no it wasn't. He left it short and Moss had to slow down, allowing the defensive backs to catch up and knock the ball away. If he'd thrown it sooner, or longer, it would have been a Moss catch going away.

Brady looked anything but sharp. Some of that was the Giants' D, but some was his inability to throw the ball like he wanted.

I agree- going for it on 4th and 13 on the 31 isn't nuts, it's just a little ballsy and risky for the second quarter. Early in the game, I think a field goal makes more sense. Late in the game and trailing, though, Belichick's decsion would look a lot better. But a 48 yard field goal is quite makable, especially in a dome.

That sack evasion was incredible, but face it, Eli threw that ball up for grabs and his receiver made a great catch.

When I saw that play, I said to myself "That was absolutely Farve-esque", and I didn't mean that as a compliment.

DSYoungEsq

They also rang up the Patriots a couple of times for false starts which were really caused by jumping D-Linemen.
So? This shows that your emotions are getting the better of you (not surprising since I've seen how you get all vitriolic about Bret Favre). The D-line is ALLOWED to jump. They just have to get back on their own side before the ball is snapped, assuming they even cross it. It's still a false start if the offensive line jumps, regardless.

And you know that. So shut up and stop whining about the fact that the Giants outplayed to Patriots. Barely.

You throw the ball 60 yards in the air and you're that close, your arm is okay. He did make some mistakes today (the bad pass in the end zone to moss comes to mind) but I don't buy the injury nonsense one bit. I can buy the throwing it sooner bit, though, I'll give you that one.

Edit: In response to DSYoungEsq a few posts up, I'm slow.

I had a different read on that, he threw a good bullet to an open receiver and only one Pat was nearby. The play where he did not see an open Toomer and threw to Plex in 3 coverage was the Farve-esque play.

You need to sit through a 30 second commercial. At the 10 second mark, you will the coverage on Tyree was in his favor and the ball was throw well but a little high.

I think it was a good pass and not a high risk pass. Try watching it and see if you still disagree.

They did it because they had already warned Belichick and he kept doing it anyway. The league was just trying to win a dick measuring contest. It had nothing to do with the Pats gaining any genuine advantage.

If it was not giving an advantage, why did Belicheat keep doing even after both the whole NFL and him specifically were warned by the commish to stop?
