So... far... away!
I'm willing to bet, Love Rhombus, that flying critters aren't going to be possible in Spore. It's good to dream, though.
I'm seriously jonesing for this game, as one of my all-time faves was SimLife. The best creature I ever made was the result of trying to simulate that old movie, The Blob. I made a town of humans, and then created a blob and placed it just outside town.
The blob, by the way, was large, incredibly dangerous, but slow. It didn't work the way I'd expected it to, though... Since the creature was so powerful, it couldn't move. However, its offspring could- and they were still really dangerous. They ended up going into town and preying on the humans... and then when they got near the original blob, it would eat them. Basically, the blob was sending out parts of itself to gather food, and then reabsorbing them when they returned.
It was so incredibly cool (in a geeky way, of course). I had designed the critter to function like the blob in the movie, but it found a more efficient way to survive. I love emergent behavior!
I'm really hoping I can have that sort of experience in Spore, too.

Probably means no mer-people, either... :( . Ah well.
I wonder if you can tamper with the other critters on the planet, like domesticate or mutate them?

Well...if you can't, you can always nuke them from orbit.

Damn, that premise would have been SO much better than the original Blob! Hideous invulnerable monster that sends out fast and terrifying mini Blobs to eat people and bring their nutrients back to the mother creature. I'd watch that in a theater on a really hot day.

Huh. I didn't realize they were going to be able to get DS and mobile in with the initial release. I assumed they'd get the PC / Mac release done, and go with the other platforms later.
And in case you didn't notice the "related stories" links, you maybe be able to sculpt your winged (if not necessarily flying) monkeys earlier than September (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/cant-wait-for-september-7-creature-only-spore-to-launch-sooner/). And at yet another link (http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/multimedia/2008/02/gallery_spore?slide=4&slideView=4) (the comments on the right), it's said that it'll be a free release, probably along the lines of a demo a few months before release.
Woohoo!

If you like open-ended "sandbox" simulation God games games like SimCity, The Sims, anything Sim, Civilization, anything "Tycoon" (Railroad Tycoon, Rollarcoster Tycoon, etc), Populous, Black & White and so on you will probably like Spore. It's kind of a SimEverything, starting you off at the microscopic level and letting you evolve up to a galactic civilization.
It's not perfect though. I would prefer if the "civilization" mode was more flexible in how it manages cities. It would be nice if you could cover your planet with more realistic urban sprawl.
What's also cool is that everything is user created, from the creatures and plants to the buildings and vehicles.

Really, this is the first game that should require 850 gigabytes of memory to install and regularly chomps on 4 and a half gigs of RAM.

Me too. My current desktop system will be over six years old when this game is released. Right now, I mostly use it for web surfing, so it doesn't matter that it's so old. But I loved SimCity (although not The Sims or any of the other spinoff games), so I'm looking forward to this one. So I plan to use the "recommended system configuration" for Spore as the baseline when I'm shopping for a new system. (Although I suspect that my six-year-old system will meet the minimum system configuration for it.)

To expand a bit futher, that means you can basically create any kind of civilization you like. You can create a race of Homer Simpsons. A race of gingerbread men living in gingerbread cities. A civilization of walking penises if you like. Whatever. My girlfriend isn't much of a gamer, but she expressed a desire to see a race of pink Tyrannosaurus Rex with little bows on them.

She obviously cannot touch this game. Tyrannosaurus Rex must NEVER have pink bows or be pink in color. NEVER!
I think your girlfriend's Spore privileges are revoked before she really got them.

I think she's still somewhat traumatized from some of the "scenarios" I used to run in The Sims 2 using a Sim versions of the two of us and our appartment. Most of them ended with Sim-me burning to death in the kitchen and Sim-GF going insane.

Yes, yes, yes. You users of computers that have a superiority complex and feel the need to have 8 billion operating systems.

I regularly run the Sims 2 at all high graphics options on my crappy 4-year-old Gateway (with video card upgrade), so most of you with modern machines should be able to craft your entities all right.
This thread is giving me a game jones just like I had before Diablo 2 came out. Here I thought I was finally ready to come out of the basement...
