View Full Version : I offer you a bout of Mao.
Revenant Threshold

Mao is a simple game.
1. You each get an amount of cards.
2. Each turn, you may play a card, as long as it is in accordance with the rules.
3. Hi, Opal!
There are other rules besides those. But i'm not going to tell you them. Much like Haggle, where you need to work out how much things are worth on your own, in Mao you need to work out what exactly the rules are. Because you don't start off with the rules, i'll tell you when you do something wrong - but only what you did wrong, not the rules, necessarily. Example;
Bob: Ok, i'm going to play the Ace of Clubs.
Dave: No, sorry, you'll need to take that back. Your mistake was playing the Ace of Clubs on the Seven of Spades.
Bob: Hmm. I deduce that Clubs may not be played on Spades/Aces may not be played on Spades/no Aces on Sevens/etc.
If people are interested, i'll take 6 players at most. So.. yes.

YES! I love this game! (Damn, I missed the window!) I'm a little dismayed, though, that you explained so much. Finding out about when and why it isn't a good idea to ask questions is an integral part of the game.
Dave: No, sorry, you'll need to take that back. Your mistake was playing the Ace of Clubs on the Seven of Spades.
The way I've always played it, you don't give a long-winded explanation, you just say the name of the offense ("Failure to play a spade", "Failure to scream", "Indirect play", or whatever you come up with), and then the player has to take a card (which, of course, you don't tell him). Spoiled Mao is the worst :(

Spoiled Mao is the worst :( It's much the same thing in some cases, although I prefer the way i'm going - with yours you give them the right answer as soon as they don't get it, and with my way they still get to be confused for a time. Besides, forum-based play means some added possibilities. :)
In general, this will have to be different from regular Mao just because it's on a forum. But I think it can work.

I created a specialized version of Fluxx for a group. I added some new rules including one that caused the goal to be hidden, but the person who played it would have to reveal it if a player won. I also used a rule similar to a Fluxx 2.0 card that caused keepers to all be hidden. I neglected to consider what would happen if they were played at the same time :smack: . So it was pretty much Fluxx with blindfolds. Absolute chaos :D

I said nothing about many things in the OP. The rules exist, they are set and certain, and they will be enforced when the circumstances that meet them are met. It's up to you to figure out what those rules are; my job is only to point out when they're broken.
So you should be asking yourselves; what action must have caused it to not be ArizonaTeach's turn? If you can tell, you'll know when it may also happen in the future. And what is the result? Sometimes you just have to test your theory and hope you don't get a penalty.

P.o.O.: are you using two decks?
Revenant Threshold
03-08-2008, 10:09 AM
You'd be able to tell if this was in person, so; yes, i'm using a number of decks. It would be more difficult in person, but a sneaky person playing this could go back and count all the cards played to guess what's left and what others have. So the amount of decks I have will stay unknown, i'm afraid. ;)

Hey there, I made you in that game. I think Kassia and I had more fun on our scum-board in BR than in the actual game.

LAST CARD!!
as in you have one left (like calling "Uno!" in a game of Uno) or as in you're out of cards now?
or didn't you know, that being out of cards garners you a penalty card, right RT? ;)

Hey, I protest, RT likes CIAS best. :dubious: I think Cat's the teacher's pet here. We should either all give him a card or alternately beat him up when the game is over. At the very least we should give him a wedgie. :) Although that might be hard given the leather outfit he's been sporting lately.

No, Im just a sore loser. However, I make up for it by gloating when I win. Well, maybe it is the leather, but just a little. All right, all right it is the leather!! All I could find to wear for the other game were some stupid leaves and the idiot things keep falling off.
