Commodore 64 Game Archeon

Once a long long time ago I owned a Commodore 64 home computer. I had this really cool game for it. I believe it was called “Archeon”.

Basically the game consisted of fantasy and mythical creatures on a chessboard. I believe it was a sorceress against a wizard with plenty of knights and goblins as pawns. When you moved a piece to an occupied square, the game went into arcade version and the players fought for dominance of the square.

I haven’t been able to come up with any information on the web about this game, and I am trying to find the manufacturer and see if a PC version of the game exists.

Does anyone else remember the game, and perhaps the manufacturer?

There exists a Commodore 64 emulator freely available on the web that will run most of those old games on a PC, if you can find pirated disk images of the games themselves.

Or so I hear.

I remember that game! A lot of fun. Moving a piece often depended on who or what could it was attacking (since there was definitely a difference in who could beat whom; i.e. a manticore was fast and could shoot quickly, but had weak life. Golems were big and tough, but moved slowly.)

It might have been called Archon, and there may have been several versions (like Archon I, II, or more). I don't know who made it, though -- sorry. And as for finding the disk images, you're on your own.

It was called "Archon" and was made by Electronic Arts. It had two sequels (neither of which were as good as the original, IMHO) and I wasted many a day away playing it, although I had it for the Atari 800XL instead of the Commodore64.
