My Sharks traded Steve Bernier and a first-round pick next year to Buffalo for Brian Campbell and a seventh-rounder. I like the move. Our defense is fine but Campbell can move the puck, which is an ability we needed. I'm still waiting on anything involving Patrick Marleau.

What's your team doing?

Traded Wade Belak for a 5th round pick. I'm surprised the Leafs were able to get something for a fourth line goon.

I'm hoping for more (a lot more).

New Jersey gets Bryce Salvador from St. Louis for Cam Janssen
Florida gets Wade Belak from Toronto for a 2008 5th round pick
San Jose gets Brian Campbell and a 7th round pick from Buffalo for Steve Bernier and a 2008 1st round pick
Dallas gets Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist from Tampa Bay for Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Jeff Halpern
Washington gets Cristobal Huet from Montreal for a 2009 2nd round pick
Colorado gets Ruslan Salei from Florida for Karlis Skrastins and a 3rd round pick
Carolina gets Tuomo Ruutu from Chicago for Andrew Ladd
Ottawa gets Martin Lapointe from Chicago for a 2008 6th round pick
Colorado gets Adam Foote from Columbus for a conditional 2008/2009 1st round pick (depends on Colorado making the playoffs) and a conditional (depends on Colorado resigning Foote)
Washington gets Sergei Federov from Columbus for Theo Ruth
San Jose gets Rob Davison from the New York Islanders for a 7th round pick

As a Sens fan, I love the Lapointe acquisition. They desperately need his leadership in the room.

The Huet trade just shows how weak the market is for goaltenders. Anybody who believes that Ottawa can dump either Gerber or Emery -- even in the offseason -- is delusional.

ETA: I live in fear that Ottawa's going to vastly overpay for Hossa. The way that the team has played since November would make that a total waste.

Actually it's the other way around, no biggie.

You're right.

The website that I was pulling the trades from switched it around.

Where is Hossa going to land? Everyone has been thinking that it's going to be Montreal but that was 3 hours ago. What's holding it up?

I'm still hoping he comes here. More hoping to be rid of Marleau, actually.

The Sharks will make the biggest mistake in team history if they trade Marleau now. He's just about the only player on the team worth a damn in the playoffs, and trading him now, when his value is at its absolute lowest, is lunacy.

Kid_A
02-26-2008, 01:45 PM
Vancouver gets Matt Pettinger from Washington for Matt Cooke.

I would hold off on trading Marleau until the off-season; his value is way too low right now.

Great move by Ottawa picking up Lapointe for a 6th rounder. He should help to straighten out that dressing room.

New Jersey gets Bryce Salvador from St. Louis for Cam Janssen

This one makes me cry. The Blues traded a decent, if unspectacular, defenseman for a cement head with a dislocated shoulder. Salvador was a loyal soldier and a good guy. I was hoping he'd play his career in St. Louis. Sure, Janssen gew up in St. Louis, and I'm sure it'll be nice to have him on the team. But Salvador for him? Crap.

My Ducks so far are standing pat. Brian Burke even made an announcement today that he likes our guys. His biggest deal though was a few weeks ago when he brought back Selanne.

On July 1st Marleau has a NTC kick in. If San Jose wants to move him doing it before the draft would probably be best.

I knew that... ;)

I meant that 2 week off-season between the end of the finals and July 1.

Looking for the Isles to get rid of Satan. Hopefully it will happen in the next 8 minutes. They need to get some youth after trading so much of it away (still bitter about the damn Smyth trade and his move to play in Colorado for less money). Have to say, right now, the trade that has shocked me the most is Huet to Washington. Where does he fit in with Kolzig?

Kid_A
02-26-2008, 01:59 PM
Pittsburgh gets Hall Gill from Toronto for a 2nd and 5th round pick
New York Rangers get Christian Backman from St. Louis for a 4th round pick
Pittsburgh gets Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis from Atlanta for Angelo Esposito, Erik Christensen, Colby Armstrong and a 1st round pick

Wow...

Rysto
02-26-2008, 02:00 PM
Hossa and Dupuis go to the Penguins for Christensen, Armstrong, Angelo Esposito and (possibly) a first round pick.

Horrific overpayment by the Penguins. They'll dearly regret that deal. I'm so glad Ottawa didn't try to overbid that.

It's too much for a guy that always disappears in the playoffs.

A couple of trades always straggle in late. I think the Ryan Smyth trade came in almost a hour after the deadline passed last year.

Minnesota Wild get Chris Simon from the New York Islanders for a 6th round pick

Actually, Hossa was consistently Ottawa's best player in the playoffs. With the rest of the offense disappearing, he couldn't do much on his own.

Brian Murray has confirmed that Ottawa has no more deals pending.

ETA: Bruins, Ducks and Canucks are also done.

Rysto beat me...so some analysis.

Good to see that the Leafs got rid of Gill. I won't complain about trading anyone on this roster for draft picks. Getting as much as they did for Gill and Belak was a minor positive step but these other contracts are going to kill us.

As a Sens fan, I love the Lapointe acquisition. They desperately need his leadership in the room.
I'm a Sens fan, but I gotta tell you that I am really concerned if the defending conference champions needed to import leadership in the form of a guy who's never been known as a big leader and is coming from a team that hasn't made the playoffs in quite some time. I think this was just a straight-up replacement deal, to fill in Chris Neil, who might be hurt pretty bad.

They don't need "leadership," they need better defense.

I agree that it's a good thing the Sens didn't overpay for Hossa. That's just an insane deal. When was the last time a big name acquisition at the trade deadline helped win a Stanley Cup? It just doesn't happen; no one player's worth that much, or else the few that have been don't get traded. Marian Hossa's a great scorer and a decent enough guy but two months of him, which might increase their chances of getting into the Finals by one or two percent, is not worth the potential they gave up.

As a Sens fan I AM thrilled the Leafs couldn't move any of their really big albatrosses (although I'm shocked they got that much for Hal Gill, and got anything at all for Wade Belak, who I would not take for the waiver price.) Excellent. Excellent.

Al Montoya and Marcel Hossa have been trading to the Coyotes for Sjostrom, Leneveu and J.Gratton.

Poor Montoya. He finally gets out from under Lunqvist's shadow and ends up behind Bryzgalov.

The core of the team is the same as the one that made the finals last season. That team managed to play excellent defence in the playoffs. Somebody needs to step up and get the team to play like they did last season. I think that you underestimate the effective of a solid, gritty veteran with two cup rings.

I'd hoped the Wings would get Hossa, but a comparative price would've been Franzen and Fillpula plus the pick on a maybe resign. That's pretty steep. Stuart is a nice pickup. He gives the wings some depth on defense, which is important since right now we're minus our top four defensemen. Fedorov also would've been good. Still, I'm happy with the Wings lineup.

I was surpised to see Foote and Forsberg back with the Avs. Somebody go make sure that Roy is still in retirement. Plus Dallas picking up Richards means the West is going to be an outright brawl. Detroit, Dallas, Colorado (should they make the playoffs), Anaheim, San Jose.

Heh. Bet some number eight seed wipes out all of them. ;)

It's really looking to me that the answer is going to have to be "Brian Murray". I'm not sure if he's the type of person to pull a Lamoriello, though.

As far as the Pens trade goes...

The Pens really needed somebody with playoff experience. With Roberts down and Recci gone, Hossa will fill this role. He might even get a second wind, he seemed pretty happy to be going off to play with Sid.

Rysto
02-27-2008, 12:11 PM
I'm not sure if Hossa will find chemistry with anybody in Pittsburgh. It seems to me that Hossa, Crosby and Malkin are all players that need to have the puck on their stick to be effective.

I spoke with my inside source and he claims the team despises Paddock, but that Murray is buds with him and won't axe him. So they're stuck with him.

If they don't start winning at some point they could miss the damn playoffs. They're only nine points ahead of ninth and are playing about as badly as a team can play.

Apparently they were half right.

I'm thrilled. Every indication I got was that PAddock was an ass and hated by his players. I admit I'm surprised Murray had the guts (and ownership support) to make this move.

The more I think about the Wings deal, the more it makes sense. He's just the sort of player the wings love to land at the deadline. They didn't have to give up much to get him. He's talented, but hasn't been having very good seasons recently so if they resign him, it'll be for a lower price. Then all they have to do is sit back and watch the resurgence happen.

Okay. Maybe I'm optimistic. I'm just happy the Wings didn't send out a lot for a slightly higher chance to win the cup. Take Pittsburgh. No question that Hossa can help them, but can they resign him and Malkin? Not to mention trading away young talent can bite you in the butt when you can't find the money to sign your old young talent when they become RFA/UFA.
