View Full Version : What's your stereotypical outfit?

Some friends and I were talking about a "Come dressed as the honoree" party where you (obviously) dress up like the guest of honor, birthday person, etc. I said I couldn't think of what people would wear to be dressed as me and every single one of my friends (and a few I polled independently) said "Black pencil skirt and 4" heels". (Hey! I sez indignantly, I don't always wear black pencil skirts, I also have a dark grey tweed pencil skirt and what about the houndstooth... :smack: )
Anyway, what's your indentifying outfit? Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts and birks? Boot cut jeans, trendy trainers, a cute top? Khaki pants and navy polo (like my aunt's default outfit that gets her frequently mistaken for a Blockbuster employee)? Heavy metal/strip club t-shirt and black jeans? Pastel track suits? What would your friends wear to your party?

Red Sox hat, work shirt unbuttoned over a t-shirt, jeans and Simple clogs. OK, sometimes it's a flannel shirt.
Does the same seat at the bar count?

Oxford shirt over "khaki"s in any of 8 or so colors with New Balances in either brown or black. Belt and tie, and the watch from Stranger Than Fiction.
Alas, my fashion sense is stuck thoroughly on page 58 of the Land's End catalog.

They'd wear Wrangler jeans, a plaid flannel shirt over a white cotton tee-shirt, and work boots with white socks. If it's warm weather, they leave off the plaid shirt and replace the jeans with work shorts.

My closet is stocked almost entirely from J.C. Penney's men's section. Typically, St. John's Bay long-sleeve twill shirt, Dockers pants, Rockport shoes. Boring, I know. But comfy and stylishly anonymous.

Skirt and sweater -- I have a full array of both so can't narrow it down any better than that. The sweater is almost always over a turtleneck, though, and I'm wearing opaque tights (black, navy, brown, or cream) and flat, comfortable shoes.
Summer: Skirt and a solid-color "dress" tee, bare legs, sandals.

Jeans, fitted t-shirt and a pair of Converse. I will also probably have on a hoodie.
Swap the Converse for plain black laceless sneakers from Payless, and that's me.
Sometimes I get crazy and instead of one of my gray zip hoodies, I'll wear a button-down shirt, unbuttoned over the t-shirt.

Jeans and a t-shirt. Jean/khaki shorts if it's hot out.
Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts and birks?
Replace the birks with sandals, and up until recently, yeah.
These days it's jeans, sneakers, and some sort of interesting shirt. There is no typical.

Summer: Dickies shorts, Converse Chuck Taylors, t-shirt.
Winter: Jeans, Chucks or Doc Martens, t-shirt or button-up shirt.
This of course doesn't include "work," which is always lame khakis and lame polos or button-up shirts.

Long patterned skirt (and top) and striped socks in vivid contrasting colors, the socks mainly black and [other color] stripes. Except that I don't think I have hardly anything in yellow or lime green. I tend to favor reds and blues.

Jeans and a black (or white) v-neck t-shirt from The Gap. Black flip flops or Converse. Baseball cap.
That's daytime though. Nighttime is jeans with a sexy black (or white) v-neck shirt/sweater and black, heeled, pointy boots. I trade the baseball cap for jewelry.

Black or brown corduroys, probably a bit too big. A blue button up shirt or something with an animal print or something Asian inspired. Maybe a newsboy cap or a kerchief. Slip on shoes (not crocs). Toe socks or stretch tabi.
It's cold at work. On warm weekends I wear Hawaiian shirts.

Work: Dressy slacks in brown, grey, or black; sweater (usually cardigan) with a tank underneath; trouser socks (either black or brown, depending on pants and shoes); ballet flats. In summer, replace the sweater with a short-sleeved baby-doll top or dressy T and leave the socks at home. Most of my clothes come from Old Navy or Maurices.
Casual: Same as above, but replace dress slacks with jeans or capris. In summer, I like flip-flops.
What I don't wear: I only own about two sweatshirts and I never wear them. T-shirts (except dressier v-neck styles) and white sneakers are for the gym only.

Stereotypical work outfit: navy blue t-shirt (medium); cargos, khakis, or some other non-jean yet non-dressy pants, typically in grey or olive green; Chuck Taylor All-Stars.
Stereotypical going-out/day off of work outfit: dark/drab fitted small/medium dress shirt over a dark fitted small/medium t-shirt; slim grey or black pants; matte black dance shoes or dress oxfords. During the last few months, accented with a slim black wool overcoat, and a natty scarf (grey or maroon).
Stereotypical no-one-cares outfit: bizarre printed t-shirt (Snoopy toting an M-16, punk rock band disbanded a decade prior; promo shirts for Dairy Queen treats discontinued years before); army pants from Belgium or thrift store jeans issued from a company that supplies prisons; worn out Chucks (worn to the point of being flip-flops with nominal bits of canvas to show they'd once been sneakers) or combat boots.
Yeah, on my days off when I plan to be in the public eye, I try to look swank. Been getting good comments on it for a while, so I'm doing pretty good. All other times, though, quite lame.

Winter--Men's (preferably Carhartt) jeans, a solid color cotton sweater and boots or tennis shoes depending on how foul the weather is.
Summer--Cotton skirts and tank tops with flip flops or Birks. Very bright colors. I have a summer pelt!

Jeans and a t-shirt (sweat shirt in winter).
I was forced to wear dress pants to a company function (by order of the CEO, no less). One of the managers saw me and said "you're not wearing jeans!" and then took my picture because it was apparently such a momentous occasion.
Keep in mind I'm an engineer, and the typical "engineer's uniform" is dress pants and a dress shirt, with a tie but no coat (think Dilbert).

I guess I should add a "off-work" version. (I don't wear pencil skirts all the time.)
Nice off-work: skinny jeans, sweater/tanktop combo, flats.
Regular off-work" cut-off camo cargo shorts (I have two identical pairs, my friends are sooooo sick of them), fitted tee, and hot pink Havainas.

Mine would be boot cut jeans medium rise, either a slightly offbeat or plain t-shirt fitted or slightly too big (I get most of mine from threadless or whatever catches my fancy at the t-shirt booths), a hoodie most likely from a concert and skater shoes.
It's been my stereotypical outfit, with some variations, since high school.

::wah:: I don't have a stereotypical outfit! I'll wear anything from a suit to jeans to work, depending on the day. Weekends, it's jeans and any different style of top from Threadless tees to a nice blouse, depending on the plans. And shoes! Lord, I've got a dozen styles to choose from. Heels, boots, sneakers, sandals, clogs, loafers....

Black Reebok leather high-tops, black Levis 505s, and a black long-sleeved shirt, preferably all-cotton with a button-down collar. Sometimes I wear a belt with a fancy buckle (DaVinci's homunculus, anarchy "A", dragons, Celtic knots...).
Sometimes I wear black Dockers, and sometimes I wear black t-shirts, or my usual shirt style in gray or blue, but the above is what anyone who knows me will think of as my "uniform."

I'm pretty close to that - almost invariably, it's some variety of carpenter jeans, (usually Carhartt) grubby work boots, a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up and an access badge hanging on a ratty old lanyard.
I've got these long monkey arms so it's a rare shirt that's actually sufficiently long-sleeved, hence the rolling-up.

I don't have one... at least, I don't think I do. I'll have to ask around.
I do know that whatever people decided to wear to the party, at least one item in bright aqua blue, and they'd have on some funky striped socks (ditto) and a funky pair of shoes. Those are most certainly a constant in my wardrobe.
Also, their underpants would match their outfit. Not that most of them would know about that particular habit. :)

I work at Wal-Mart 6 days a week, so blue t-shirt or polo shirt and khaki pants. Even though I'm in class 4 out of those 5 days. I just don't want to go home and change.
On my day off, it's usually jeans and a patterned button-down shirt of some sort, unless it's hot outside, in which case it may be shorts and the sleeves may be rolled up.

Cool weather: Boot cut blue jeans, pull-over sweater or turtleneck, loafers and a blazer (with matching beret) or denim jacket.
Warm weather: Denim or khaki capris, summer sweater or polo shirt and sandals or white canvas shoes.
Add silver hoop earrings, a silver bracelet and rings and there's my look.
I am a creature of mood.
I wear a lot of long full skirts in the summer. I had to give up my peasant blouses though. Traded them for something with sleeves that didn't make me look like I was in costume. Shoes -- wedge sandals or ballet flats depending on the skirt. Love big earrings, exotic wraps and scarves and being a total cliche.
Or I can wear a Harris tweed three piece suit (the skirt, not pants) with a silky blouse and loafers. Zeldar said recently that this looked "marmy" -- meaning like a schoolmarm.
Or I can wear my righteous cowgirl boots and jeans.
My latest acquistion: lamb houseshoes. I don't mean like Persian lamb. I mean like Lambchop.

Male, 36.
When I was in my teen years, blue jeans, a T-shirt (usually something hippie related), and sneakers.
Now, blue jeans (in better shape than I used to wear, but still frayed at the cuffs), a long-sleeve button shirt open at the collar, and black casual shoes.
Of course, what I'm probably best known for at the office is wearing something more like this: (http://flickr.com/photos/jmrocher2001/1358210171/in/photostream/)a helmet, cycling shorts and a T-shirt with a zipper down the front.

Depends on who is coming. If it's my friends from Rocky it would be either a corset with fisnets and a short skirt slit all the way up one side or pleather pants with a bra and a fishnet shirt, both usually with boots with a spiked heel, though occassionally Nine West heels or stillettos. If they were from classes then black pants/jeans with a black band/concert/theatrical show shirt. (One day I wore my yellow blue sun shirt and the entire day people stopped me to comment on the color. "you're wearing yellow" they'd say,as if I didn't know. Not one of them stopped me to comment on how awesome Firefly was. *le sigh* ) If they know me from the thetare it would be blacks, completely and utterly and the socks better go past the ankle and be black too.

I'll throw in my sex & age...I'm F and 40. When I described my typical outfit above, I was thinking more about winter, since we are in the middle of a seemingly endless one right now. In the summer, I wear capris just about every day, and although some of my pairs are denim, I tend to get them in different colors & patterns, and I wear them with t-shirts or sometimes a lightweight sweater. Sometimes I'll wear low-top Chucks with them, and sometimes I wear flip-flops or other sandals.
I'm interested to read that some folks still wear Docs...I still have a few pairs (even a b&w spectator pair, like Big Bad Voodoo Lou!), but never think to wear them anymore.

You know, I think it's a little sad that we all have an answer to this. I'm making a note to add some variety to the wardrobe next time I shop. But the answer for me is: solid, red, black, or blue T-shirt, preferably with a V-neck, long-sleeve in winter, or sweater, jeans or chinos, and comfy shoes that aren't quite sneakers, like Sketchers.

Men's Wrangler or Rustler (inferior, but still acceptable) boot cut jeans with holes everywhere (the pair I'm wearing right now has half of one back pocket ripped off and holes in both knees). Tightish thrift store t-shirt with a wifebeater in a contrasting color peeking out from underneath. Black suede high-top Chucks or Vans checkerboard slip-ons (black and white only, I'm a purist). Mr. Rogers style button-up-the-front men's cardigan. If it's really cold, I'll wear a brown Dickie's hoodie. In the summer I favor Dickie's Men's Cell Phone Pocket shorts instead of the Wranglers, and although I rarely get to wear it I'll bring the sweater with me, just in case. I'll occasionally wear brown or olive green flip-flops. If I'm at school I carry a gray messenger bag. Leather cuff or leather watch on left wrist.
I have all of the above in a wide range of colors, but I probably wear brown and green more than anything else.

Plaid, plaid, and more plaid.
Finding out that I have Scottish ancestry explained a lot.

Nice but not crazy nice jeans, dark shirt of some kind (long sleeve T, long sleeve button down, short sleeve polo, depending on weather and occasion - black most likely, but red is another personal fave), black Rockports. Absolutely crucial that it all is well fitted - feeling comfortable in what I'm wearing tends to be a really good way to build a good mood, and I HATE baggy clothes unless I'm just lying on my couch.
If I'm at work, nice Dockers instead of jeans, and the shirt is definitely button down (and, well, work-quality instead of casual-quality). Same basic principles though

Polo shirt or T-shirt (solid color, no logos or artwork) or occasionally, a button-down shirt, jeans (sometimes black), Reebok Ex-O-Fit shoes (black, high-top). I'm often seen wearing a good-quality black baseball-type hat (no logos or words). I won't wear anything that's baggy, and upon reflection, I don't seem to own anything white except underwear.

my day to day wardrobe is all about color- I have to wear something brightly colored, and different bright color combinations. I have yellow, hot pink, lime green, turquoise, etc. I'm also always wearing pants that are slightly large, b/c my weight fluctuates to a large extent and I never seem to have clothes that fit where I am- its always a choice between slightly too tight or slightly too large (most of the time I pick the latter).
So... unusual color-combination of shirts, slightly large jeans, red striped adidas sneakers. If I have to look dressy, though, I'll drop the color combinations and just wear black- for me, the absence of color is dressy-looking ;P
When I had a job, I wore boring suits.

Jeans or non-dressy slacks, a solid-color tee shirt, and a jacket, often open, when it's cold. Rarely sweatshirts, they're a little too casual and baggy for my taste. I hate shorts. I'll often refuse to wear them until it's over 85 or 90 out.

Female, 29.
Bootcut jeans and Fluevog/harness boots or jeans and flipflops depending on what season of the year it is.
T-shirts or long-sleeved tees. Threadless makes a frequent appearance on my chest.

Winter/Spring (<75 F): long sleeve baby tee, blue jeans, zip up black jacket and white running shoes.
Summer/Fall (>75 F): Short sleeve or sleeveless baby tee, knee length skirt and flats.
I walk around outside all the time on campus, so my clothing is very dependent on the seasonal weather. Which, considering Houston, can vary widely from hellishly hot to really f*cking cold.

Winter: Wide-leg trousers, v-neck sweater, usually cashmere, colour varies. Always beautiful shoes, heel height depending on how tolerant of pain I'm feeling.
Summer: Some kind of dress, style dress depends on several factor including temperature, how body-confident I'm feeling, and whether I'm feeling frilly and girly, or plain and simple. Usually worn with sandals.
That's for work. Outside of the office, it varies too much for there to be a "type".

Vest.
Fleece or leather, but a vest.
It holds cell phone, PDA, camera, pens, mechanical pencil, eyeglass cleaning wipes, bottle of purell, pack of gum, and in the summer, keys and sunglasses. And when I get home, I just slip it off and it's ready to go again.

Jeans. Black shoes. Brown Jacket. Green shirt to match.
I look very much like the stereotypical grad student. It's all comfort and utlity to tell the truth. The jacket has pockets for notes, a hood for the wind, it's big and insulating for the weather. The shoes are waterproof. The jeans and shirt are comfortable.

If I'm feeling classy: slacks, fitted blouse or nice sweater, heels. Sometimes a dress in warm weather. Wool pea coat in the winter. I may even wear earrings and try to do my nails. I dress like this at the beginning of the school term, when I'm feeling all great about myself and the world and this is the quarter I'll really knock 'em dead and read all the boring postmodern articles I was assigned! YEAH!
When that all wears off, around midterms or so, I switch back to: jeans, tshirt, Chuck Taylors, a hoodie, and a bad attitude. At some point, I may stop wearing makeup or doing my hair (my corduroy pork pie hat is making a comeback now as I approach finals). I'll probably switch to capris and flipflops pretty soon here as summer approaches.

Jeans, hiking boots, & either a colored T-shirt or open-collared dress shirt with sleeves rolled to just below the elbow.
The you-can't fire-me-because-I-run-the-computers "Corporate Geek" look. That sounds like Mr J, except for change the hiking boots to a funky pair of Puma's. Not at work: the above with a white t-shirt.
Me: 22/f - jeans (usually low rise & flared or loose boot cut), a plain colored crew-neck shirt or plain turtleneck (winter) & Diesel Bellatrix shoes. I'm a simple gal... and don't have to dress up for work.
