My younger roommate's Japanese-born mother recently returned from a trip to Japan, and she brought him back a box of green tea. Unfortunately, he's not sure what to do with it. The tea itself is powdered, rather than the usual "shredded" loose tea, so it won't work in a tea ball. The text on the packaging is all in Japanese, which my roommate doesn't read.

So how is this powdered stuff prepared? I'm pretty sure his mom wouldn't bring "instant" tea all the way from Japan ;) Also, I'd like to try some of this tea myself. I figure that genuine Japanese green tea has got to be better than the stuff I get at the supermarket.

If it's helpful, I could probably snap and post a few photos of the package.

It may be matcha tea. Here are some suggested methods.

Thanks! We'll give that a try.
