View Full Version : OK, what's the greatest EXIT scene in a movie?

To piggyback on Pochacco's thread about entrances, what about exits?

One of the best has to be Slim Pickins as Major T.J. "King" Kong in Dr. Strangelove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgHSDa2Jwqc)
The link is to a longer version of the scene. By the way, that's James Earl Jones giving back all those "negative function" reports on the bomb bay doors.

The Illusionist, when the police try to arrest him.

I had the entire movie figured out literally the moment they showed whats-her-face's murder, except for that one scene. It took me totally by surprise, although I feel a little silly for falling for it.

Hmm, I was just watching I am legend and will smiths character deciding to sail away at the end was pretty cool.

Exit scene as in final scene for a character? Or exit scene as in final scene of an act?

Because for the latter, the shot of Rhett carrying Scarlett kicking up the stairs has to be on the list. It's absolutely iconic.

Or, if it's the former, same movie, same characters. "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!"

The death scene of Roy Battie the replicant in Blade Runner. "All those moments will be lost, like tears in rain... Time to die."

Shane riding off into the sunset in the movie of the same name. Classic ambiguous exit. And continuing a mental walk of old, classic movies, the "exit" of the titular dog from Old Yeller, and the fog walk exit scene ending Casablanca.

One more came to mind: the very literal exit scene at the end of The Truman Show. "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya: good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"

I would go with the Godfather's final scenes. The long musically scored scenes of retribution concluding with the capos kissing Michael's Ring and the door slowly closing showing that Michael is now as his father was before.

In the Spirit of the Vanishing point film, I've always really liked the ending of Devil's Reject (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfhPxv4fKEE&feature=related) . (Violent, loud, and gory, probably not be safe for offices).

But that was a really satisfying ending after watching all the non-stop horror and violence perpetrated by those characters throughout the film- it all just REALLY worked there at the ending to convey the emotions of those characters at the end of the film.

I was thinking of Pvt. Pyle at the end of the first half of Full Metal Jacket, after stating: "I AM in a world of shit".

My list of Doctor Who regeneration scenes from the other thread could do double duty here.

But I'll go with the finale of Hitchcock's Notorious: Cary Grant's "No room, Sebastian!" as he locks the cab door, and moments later, Claude Raine's boss politely calls from the door: "Sebastian, come in, please. We want to talk to you."

The real (?) Kong himself went out in spectacular fashion, I'd say.

Minor hijack. Gotta friend in Holland who has become friendly with Rutger Hauer. Apparently he was told to free associate, improv, what have you. Claims that speech was made up that day.

Interesting.

Claims that speech was made up that day.In his autobiography, and in the DVD release, the same claim is made - it's not totally made up by him alone, but some lines were Rutger's idea.

•Q, in The World is Not Enough.

"...Always have an escape plan."

:(

Q's implied retirement is wistful enough...but Desmond Llewelyn's accidental death not long after makes it downright eerie.

•Arguably, the Crow, in The Crow. More eerie symbolism.

That's what I came in to say: that exit competes with her exit from the cafe, when she drops the coat (it's been a couple years since I've seen it, so my details may be off). But those two exits are the best!

The two main ones I thought of when I saw this thread have already been mentioned: Truman's exit in The Truman Show and the one mentioned for The Usual Suspects.

I'll add the final scene of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, although I can't really say if that fits into an "exit scene."

Leon. As he lies dying after being shot by Gary Oldman's character he presses something into Oldman's hand and whispers "this......is from......Matilda". Oldman watches him die and then opens his hand to reveal the pin from a hand grenade. Boom.
