View Full Version : Lurkers Anonymous: Roll Call Part II

Hirka T'Bawa

Zeldar posted a thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=328473&page=1&pp=50&highlight=lurker+roll+call) calling for lurkers to announce themselves back in August of 2005, almost two a half years ago. I still consider myself a lurker, since I come here every day and read the thread here, yet I hardly post. Since I joined in July of 2001 I have a total of 416 posts (this is my 417th), so a total of 0.17 a day.

I'm posting this to see what other lurkers might still be around, for this thread, I'm counting lurkers to be people with less then 0.50 posts a day. So, if your a lurker, announce your attendance here.

Now, since we just went through a Charter Member renewal, and since a lot of people didn't renew waiting for the free posting. I will bump this thread once free posting starts (if I remember) to see how many people come back who where lurking then.

So, if you consider yourself a lurker, announce your presences here.

Hi, my name's Kaboodle and I'm a lurker.

I'll read an entire thread and nine times out of ten I'll find the opinion/question/point of view that I would have posted. I don't post to say 'Me too!' [not that there's anything wrong with that]

Too often I fall into the trap of writing up a post and then editing it to death for clarity, tone, spelling, etc. I usually give up before actually posting it.

Yep, pretty low post count here. It's not that I plan it that way. It's just that by the time I read all the posts in a thread someone else has already posted what I was going to write.....

Coming out of hiding to say hi.
I can't really explain why I tend to be more of a lurker. Mostly what others have said above, I just don't often feel I have anything to contribute that hasn't already been said more eloquently before.
Still, this place has an amazing group of people and it's always interesting to read what everyone has to say.

Former lurker here. I've been lurking for about a year not, just re-up'd my sub today though. Was getting hella tired of the ads. I have a little higher post count, but in my defense, a lot of that came from the last game of doper-ball we had. Hella fun that was, good 'ol Swampbear.

I almost didn't post this for fear of ruining my lurking credentials. Besides, everyone in this thread has already said what I would have said regarding reasons for lurking. I might add that I just don't find myself at the computer outside of work and the quick looks I take at SDMB while at work are hardly time enough to read through a thread much less compose an insightful post.

I lurk way more than I post, I'm here everyday. Most of the time either someone has already posted a point I have thought of, or I might think about posting and I procrastinate to the point it's not worth it. Eventually I will get to one thousand posts, unlike the low averages of some of the other lurkers.

.04 posts per day lurker, checking in. Yo!

I am here every day lurking along. Typically I don't post because I read the board at work and I get interrupted briefly, but frequently. (I've been interrupted three times just while typing this tiny post, for example.)

It's not that distracting when I'm just reading, but when I'm trying to type a response and I get interrupted, I forget what I was trying to say... and I just give up.

I am without a doubt, a lurker. I have tried to get myself to post before, but I just can't seem to do it. I've never liked reading my own writing, so even if I have something to add to a thread, I just keep it to myself. I find that if I'm not able to express myself using my hands and voice, a lot of what I'm trying to say gets lost.

I do read this board pretty much daily. It's kind of weird how much I know about regular posters here, without being known by them at all.

I think Waldo has us all beat on the post count thing. FWIW, I think you come across in writing just fine--even better than most. I think it's a matter of just jumping in and doing it without giving it too much thought.

That's what I'm trying to do today, at any rate.

(And I have edited this post three times in five minutes before hitting the submit button. <sigh>)

I squeeze in right under the wire at .41/day.

My wife is a major lurker but didn't sign up when P2P came along. She's on these boards more than I am.

I did renew since it was cheap; had it been 15 bucks, I would have let it lapse.

Lurker checking in. I check the boards pretty much every day, but end up posting pretty rarely. By the time I get there, usually what I have to say has already been said, and usually more eloquently.

Hmm, perhaps it's time that I should start sharing my wisdom more often, rather than selfishly keeping it all to myself.

I'm a lurker here, in fact this is my first post. I tend to read the board during slow times at work but then get interrupted before I can post. Or, as it seems with some of the other lurkers, what I would've said has been said already.

Check the post count.

I've been lurking for free here for about five years, but just paid up and have NEVER posted anything. Mainly because every time I thought about posting a reply, someone else posted the same information in a much more eloquent way that I possibly could.

Howdy.

Lately I've been making serious efforts to post instead of just lurking. The Feud and Bottichelli threads have helped. But I don't think I'm making much of a dent in my status. Heck, I haven't even bothered to send in a request to get rid of the no-longer-mandatory underscores in my name. So who's got too much time on their hands and wants to calculate our individual and group average posts per day (preferably with a conversion factor to posts per lurker per hour)?

Waves to Jaymosch and Kolga! Hi!!!

I'm truly curious as to what made each of you post today after being so quiet. I talk to my monitor out loud, as I read, about what I'd like to say, and I'm pretty smart and eloquent. But why, oh why is it SO hard just to type it and hit submit?

For me, it's because you people scare the crap out of me. :D (that'll be the last use of smileys for me for the next five years). I'm afraid that I'll type something that'll sound incredibly intelligent in my head and when I read it, but actually more resembles my dog walking across the keyboard.

Daily lurker, infrequent poster. I joined the same month as the OP and have about 10 more posts. So I'm also at 0.17/day. And about 50 of those posts came since the Game Room opened and I played a bunch of feud and Madness games.

At 0.32 a day, I am sure I make the grade of a reasonably efficient lurker.

Besides the reasons already posted which apply to me just as well, I actually like reading the posts more than writing, because I am always sure that someone else will most certainly come along and say what I am wanting to say.

So I just move along reading and enjoying more and more posts instead of spending time writing something that some other poster can, and does and better.

So, hello. :waves:
Killing a thread is bad enough, but it's even worse to start a thread that turns out to be stupid and uninteresting. And to kill your own thread that way? yeah...

I'm lurker-ish. I tend to go through periods where I'll ignore the boards for a while, then lurk for a while, then have a brief fit of frenzied posting. Then I lather, rinse, and repeat.

In addition to the "someone else said it better already" problem, I also tend to start a post, then half-way through I decide it's not worth it and move on.

I agree with the feeling of being intimidated by the brilliant posters.

Thread killing is a scary thing. I'll finally get the oomph to post and it just dies. You just want to go curl up in a ball.

Maybe we can change that? I don't care if you just post to say "Me too." Just post; your opinion matters. To me, it does. Really.

If the whole idea bombs, I vote we blame it on Kolga's dog.

Hirka T'Bawa, thank you for starting this thread. Maybe it will bring a bunch of us out of the lurker closet and we'll have some fun.

This has been a pretty good lurker thread.

I've actually been thinking about starting to post instead of lurk for a while, and I've been waiting for an easy way to get started. I don't think I would have ever come up an 'introduce myself' thread that I thought would have been interesting enough.

I posted in another thread yesterday, maybe I'll try to make 1 post a day for a while, and see how that goes.

Unless someone beats me in, I'll be the 51st post here. If I kill the thread on a new page all to myself, then I'll see all you lurkers in another couple years.

Eep, I think I qualify. I actually read here for a few years before I joined even as a guest.

I generally don't speak unless I have something I really want to say, and I hate feeling like I'm 'spamming'. I read a lot more than I post since I generally view the Dope a lot at work, and it's much easier to read with interruptions than post.

Suse

I guess I qualify, with .30 posts per day. I am not able to access the Dope at work, so I don't often post through the week as I can't keep up with the direction of threads and respond promptly to any replies. So on the weekends I'll make up for it a bit, but honestly, most of the time I don't feel that I have anything important enough to say.

I agree- I have mixed thoughts on those with a huge thread count. On some days I feel they know a lot on all topics: on other days I think they are just know alls.

I don't know which is correct- probably a bit of each. (Some contributors would fall distinctly into one or the other).

I read far more than I post - there are a lot of smart people here and I generally find that any point I might make gets made without me being involved. In fact, as proof of this, even this observation has already been made upthread.

So I guess I don't qualify as a true lurker, but the post count doesn't show when just an average... I go through spurts (like today) when work is slow or I'm traveling for work with my laptop but don't have anything to do) where I'll post lots, but not all that often.

And usually by the time I see them at home, with the time zones and all, it's gone round the houses once or twice and someone's already said what I want to.

I may win the prize for being a member for the longest time without posting*. I've almost posted a few times over the years but, well, didn't.

One of my reasons (Oh, don't sigh and whine--I'm not going to list all of them) is that once I registered, I discovered my chosen user name is very similar to an already established member. I keep thinking I'll change it but this is the one I've used since I've been online and I haven't thought of one I like as well. So there.

* Did I win? What's the prize? A car would be good since mine's in the shop with weird ailments but I'd settle for pie.

Another recent favourite of mine was Schizm (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9616334&postcount=39) who de-lurked to mine some comedy gold. Mike Lenehan (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/member.php?userid=20) is AFAIK the ultimate SDSAB lurker, if such sub-categories will be considered.

My reason for lurking is that on preview my posts almost always sound disjointed and stupid. And *on preview* this one is no different. Sigh.

Well, everyone's good at something and, sadly, lurkage is what I've chosen. Hmm...this might explain a lot. Sad really. :smack: I'm looking forward to the cake though! Can I request white cake with chocolate frosting?

I've almost de-lurked a couple of times before in the cat threads. My boy Bubba is very...special. Maybe next time. After all, in less than a week, I've doubled my post count!

Edited because I can too spell. Really.

Holy cow -- do I qualify as a lurker?

Gleena

Bit of a lurker myself, and read for a long time before I joined up. Actually, I was a lurker on AOL as well....

Long story as to why I never posted and never joined until I did, but mostly it boils down to me moderating other forums as a paid job (I want the dot.coms back!) and for a long time, message boards felt like work, not fun.

Cheers,
G

I guess I qualify as a lurker as well with 0.43 ppd.

It was true until the SDMB started playing Mafia and opened a games room.

I'm hooked now, hooked I say.

*raises hand* Lurker.

I just... I don't know, I'll read a thread and either, like others have said, someone else has already said what I wanted to say - or else nobody else has said it, and I'd be the only one in the thread with that opinion, and people might argue and I'd have to keep coming back and arguing back and oh God then someone might Pit me and...

I just really hate getting into internet fights. Or even mild debates, often. So I don't, generally. And I also don't post "me too!", and, well, it's rare to see a thread where I have something to contribute that doesn't fall into either someone's-already-said-it or nobody's-already-said-it-and-everyone-disagrees. Also, I have a habit of forgetting this place exists for several months at a time, then wandering back onto it and going "Hey, this board is interesting!" and resuming lurking...

[Edit: Oh, and Waldo Jeffers? As in "The Gift"? Awesome name.]

Yes, that's how I know I come off better. Sure, I may be dressed in Spandex and carrying assorted devices of great deviance that way but that beats a rather hefty 49 year old in sweats and a Tshirt that's almost certain to bear a mysterious stain from yet another in a series of battles with gravity.

Dammit, now I've ruined the mystery.

SpinyNorma, I'm in awe.

I'm a lurker for the same reasons as others have mentioned and some they have not:

1. By the time I get to a thread, someone has already said what I was going to say.
2. It doesn't seem worth it to argue about it when my opinion differs.
3. I'm enjoying a thread and fear that if I post I'll kill it.
4. I start to reply, then the phone rings or a client or partner wanders in so I have to abort.
5. I'm at home and can't break the child's monopoly on the computer or I have to tend to activities of daily living.

I have been posting more lately at work, so maybe that means I'm getting more opinionated with age. Or maybe I'm just getting lazier at work.

I still qualify as a lurker: Join Date: 11-15-2005; Total Posts: 220 (0.24 posts per day). Just not on a par with Ms. SpinyNorma.

I think I posted in the last lurker thread, too. It really is kind of disturbing how much time I spend reading these boards without posting. I feel like I'm borderline stalking the regular posters or something. It's good to know I'm not the only one, though!

I wish I posted more, as I think it would be fun to be part of an online community, but each time I promise myself I'm going to start posting more, it doesn't happen. Apparently I am just as shy on message boards as I am in real life :(.

HenryGale

LONG time lurker here. As others have said, it's almost creepy how much time I spend reading the boards, getting to know the members and all the inside jokes, without ever actually participating.

I was going to wait until free subscriptions kick in to start posting, but what the heck. If it doesn't happen before June 19th, I'll just drop back into Lurk Mode for a while until I get my voice back.

I gotta say...Every time I watch an episode of one of my fav shows, or see a good movie, or something interesting is on the news, I always run to the Dope to see what everyone here has to say about it.

So, thanks to everyone for that. :D

The SDMB is very special to me, I visit every day and have been around since the beginning. I remember the old AOL message board with Cecil's pulsating brain in a jar. I don't post very much mainly because writing is very difficult for me I just don't have the skill of translating my thoughts into text. I am closing in on a thousand posts, others in this thread have more than that. I can't see having a thousand posts could be considered a lurker, I don't consider myself as one.

It is good to see new "faces" posting. Hello!

To me, the term "lurker" sounds like someone who is on the outskirts of a group but not really part of it, and I have never felt that way here. My name may not be recognizable to most members but when I actually post, I feel accepted and like one of the gang. I'm not a lurker, I'm just an infrequent poster, that's all.

I better just keep lurking.

Former lurker here. I've been lurking for about a year not, just re-up'd my sub today though. Was getting hella tired of the ads. I have a little higher post count, but in my defense, a lot of that came from the last game of doper-ball we had. Hella fun that was, good 'ol Swampbear.

Not a Lurker, per se, but someone interested in the Lurker in these days of heightened agita here at SDMB.

This is your basic *bump* to a thread that is a spinoff of another such "stand and be counted" concept.

Thus is my 808th post with an average post frequency of 0.4 per day, joined in 2003.

Hi to all my fellow lurkers and occasional joiners of threads.

Zeldar

I'm appealing to posters in this thread for some help.

I want to update my Notepad file so I can update the list of Lurkers that I had posted several time in the previous thread.

I have copied the three pages and stripped them down to just basic poster data of Post number, date and time, Poster's name, Member Status, Join Date, and Number of Posts.

Unfortunately, my member status has reverted to Guest since I have yet to renew. That means I can't see the post counts on the posters below.

If you can provide the post count for anybody below, then please:

1) check to see it hasn't already been posted, and

2) copy the poster's data and paste it into a reply post and add the post count

Thanks in advance.

Here's the list as of Post # 114 by MemoryDump. It is in Post # sequence for (hopefully) ease of reference in the thread.

Okay! Here's a summary of this thread before I start the process of merging this info in with the previous thread's summary. I'll give this a few days (let's say a week or so) so that anybody who wants to provide post counts for anybody in the list above can have time for it.

I have applied no value judgments of who might have too heavy a post count to be a true "Lurker" and have instead just organized the data. Apologies for the reduced size, but I thought that better than having to scroll across for all the info.

Comments welcome on how to proceed further.

Zeldar, I'm not sure why you can't see post counts for these people- I'm a guest and I was able to see their profiles. Anyway, here's your list, updated with post counts:

Thanks for all of this, Bumbershoot. I don't know either, unless it's that I didn't take time to click on each username and look up their profiles. I assumed that Members would see on the thread those same numbers, but that Guests would not. And yes, I did try to remove dupes, unsuccessfully it appears. But I'll get your numbers incorporated into the file and post a new update of this thread's data in the next 24 hours. Merging with the old thread's data will still be a next weekend task.

Thanks again! Nice work.

because I can't see how 13,541 posts makes one a Lurker and because the length of the username would have forced a realignment of the data, which I would have to have done manually. I mention this in case LOUNE wonders about it.

I will wait until next weekend to post the merged and updated total Lurker file so that other Lurkers can get in on the action. Any new posts will be added to the data before then. And I will post that here as opposed to the older thread. The fuzziness of Guest data being included (because of the free posting since the old thread went up) will or ought to be easier to accept by posters in this thread.

I have been remiss in not thanking Hirka T'Bawa for picking up the ball on Lurkers Anonymous after I had let it slide for so long. Thanks again to Bumbershoot for looking up the post counts on Guests.

Thanks to all participants. There are a lot of Lurkers here. No telling how many more had rather keep that quiet. ;)

Is it too late to put my name in?

Never too late for the thread. It's just that wherever things stand by next weekend is where I'll take the snapshot for summarizing the data (as above). These summaries take up way too much space, and I'm not even sure how much value they have. It's just a way for me to spend some time. ;)

I've heard no complaints. I've heard no praise. So I'm humoring myself mostly.

But in direct answer to your question, for the benefit of other Lurkers out there: post away! It's a harmless way to indicate your presence at the SDMB without having to defend it or explain it. Bump your post count (if any) by 1. See what sort of company you're keeping.

I've been trying in vain to get my wife to post here. But she absolutely won't. Her account is cubester (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/member.php?u=33540), and she's made seven posts over the years, but she's a daily lurker.
She's also stubborn as a mule.

Nice idea, flyboy, and since you vouch for cubester, I'll include her.

If others know of true Lurkers who are shy or otherwise won't post for themselves, as long as you include in your post these details, I can copy/paste this info into the summary file:

The thread link, authenticating the find is a good idea, too.

If others want to join in the search for other Lurkers, that will be way cool.

Can we get some ideas on what Lurker really implies about posting frequency? I'm of the opinion that once per day is too often to be a Lurker.

But how often? Or what posting percentage?

I won't remove any names from the already accumulated data, but for future reference in this thread what are your thoughts?

In my post I included a link to the thread.

Yes, you did. And I said that's a good idea, too.

But my appeal was for the details available in the thread, not just the link. A copy/paste of those details will save me the time of tracking them down.

Same with the link to the user's profile, for those going that route.

Thanks again for the help.

Just a reminder: On Sunday, I'm planning to post the final update to the listing I have been keeping in Notepad that has all the Lurkers from this thread and the older one I started a few years back.

Since the old thread's post counts haven't been updated (they are just snapshots of the way things were when I copied the data) it's quite possible that people will be shown as Lurkers who have gone on to become conspicuous posters here. You'll be able to tell who I mean when the list goes up.

If you want your name to be associated with the ones listed 15 posts ago, please respond to this thread by Saturday night.

Thanks.

As you note, there's no real purpose to this but I love stats and have tended to compile lists in the past for no particular purpose. Figure you may as well add me:

There should be some kind of definition for what constitutes a true lurker. We only have each person's word to go on for how often they view the SDMB but I'd say they need to average logging in once every couple days or so. For the post count my suggestion would not necessarily be a total post count but based on posts per day. It should be much less than 1, I suggest maybe 0.5. This way folks joining in '99 with over 1,000 posts could still be considered lurkers, but someone on here for a couple months with only a few dozen wouldn't be.

I was a near-daily lurker for at least a year before I joined.
I've posted only one OP, and it was a late-night indulgence with no replies.

Has Cecil been mentioned yet? 152 posts since 3/3/99, for an average of .04

I meet the OP's lurker qualifications. I have 0.4 posts per day, though I'm trying to post more often. I do read the boards several times a day though.

With .88 posts per day, I'm not sure where I fit in. Not quite a lurker, not quite a regular, recognizable poster. I'm what, a t'wurker?

Not to worry. I'm putting your data on the file. You and others can judge for yourselves.

My post count/average is deceptive in that I'm on-again-off-again in my habits here: a flurry of activity for a few months then an absence of several. When I'm here I definitely don't lurk!

Cognitive dissonance is making it exceedingly difficult for this daily lurker to post.

Hello everyone, I'm Polly, and I'm a lurker.

I lurk. Lots. Sometimes I go through brief phases of posting, and then I... fizzle out and go back to lurking.

I rarely feel like posting, but I love reading threads here.

I think I am still under 250 posts for 4+ years. This place does intimidate me, even when I consider myself a subject matter expert.

They don't know they're paying me to Dope, silly! :D

Funny. I wasn't expecting a response until the next lurker thread.

Long time lurker (since about '99) and at 0.02 posts per day, I still double SpinyNorma (go figure!). I guess that is why I don't post that much... Oh well back to work I go...

Been a lurker for a few years, just signed up for a Guest Account. This is my 3rd? posting, so I have to be at something like .01 posts a day.
