I was dusting off my copy of Virtual Pool 3 for reinstall today, and realized it is something like 70-years-old in dog/software years. Have I been totally out of touch? Am I missing out on something much better?

Pretty much, I'm afraid. There's talk of a Virtual Pool 3 Gold (http://www.vp3gold.com/vp3gold.php), but clearly they're taking their time over it.
