Just as I clicked on the link a huge worry rushed through me.

So FYI,

There are no photos in the linked article.

Thank Og for that - I've seen what happens to deer, birds, and other critters than go through an ordinary prop, don't care to see what happens with human vs. turbo prop.

We had a similar accident at Gary Regional, oh, 10 or 15 years ago - lineman walked into a spinning turbo prop. They gave the family what was left which, apparently, wasn't a lot.

First thing I thought of was the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark in which Indy & a big bald German dude were fighting near a runaway plane. Indy's down and about to get his ass handed to him, when he sees the plane approaching them -- he ducks & covers himself, causing the German to turn around, just in time for the prop to turn his face into confetti.

Bad weekend to be near propellers.

Someone else got killed after a jet ski vs boat propeller collision. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/21/BAO411SMQ4.DTL&tsp=1)

Seems to perhaps be a not-watching-where-you're-going accident, rather than a skydiving accident. [/nitpick]

Which brings up a question...how does this happen? Could she not hear/see the prop, or was she sucked into it?

And then there's that one scene in the film version of Catch-22... I only saw that movie once, decades ago, and it still haunts me.

Same way you get accidents on the flight decks of aircraft carriers: People get used to the hazards around them, and don't pay as much attention as they should to their surroundings. Or to use a non-aviation analogy: How many people have you heard about getting into accidents when they pull out of their driveways - because they're not paying full attention to their surroundings, because they're sure they know what's there?

You can certainly hear a prop when it's spinning, and feel the wind off of it, but they can be very hard to see. People do walk into them by accident, because by the time you feel the prop itself it's too late.

Not a good week for tubas (http://www.wkrg.com/national/article/look_out_below_skydiver_hits_military_band/16103/) either.

You mean like not asking if they took her to a spin doctor?

I'll be on my way to Hell now.

If you're referring to your use of the word "Disaster" for your link, wouldn't that only apply if she had backed into the propeller instead of walking into it?

Is there room in that handbasket for one more?
