Heavens to Betsy, this week is beginning very strangely.
I had an Enchilada bake for lunch. It was good.
It is hot, humid, and will be rainy later.

Came home early because I'm a good Mom. I found out that King George County is still hiring elementary teachers, but they don't take resumes - just on-line apps. So I left work early and came home to fill out daughter's app as much as I could. Thankfully, most of it was covered by her resume, so it was just a copy job. There are a few blanks, but I left her a voice mail and asked her to call so I can get the rest of the info - like her PRAXIS scores and a few other things.
I've got a hunk o'cow flesh thawing for supper - it's gonna be rotissed, I think. And I really should get grubby and get some work done in the basement. I should. I really should...
FCD is now in the doghouse. He got caught running a red light - doggone red light cameras. So there's another $75 down the toilet. grrrrrrr
Yesterday was a short working day. My sweetie and I took the afternoon off, got some lunch, got me a new pair of sneaks and a nice canopy for craft-showing, and we did some wandering in Home Despot. After we got back, I cleaned up part of my studio and actually got my hands into come clay. I had bought some stains, so I mixed up something over 2# of clay with some supposed red stain. Interestingly, it didn't stain my hands. We'll see how it looks when I fire it. I'm intending to do some blue, green and yellow, too. Then I'll commence to throwin' again. Yay!
Other than that, just another day in paradise. rah.

Good times, Friday was my last day of work and I'm enjoying the time off before the big move to New Jersey. Of course there's packing to do. I'm also waiting on a job lead, an inter-company transfer and promotion to bilingual financial counselor in Manhattan. If that happened, it would be really great. I'd have a desk, an office, you know, a real job. I do Spanish all day long on the phones, but the vocabulary range is limited and I've reached the point where I can't really improve at my former position. Having the face-to-face experience and adding a wide range of new conversational topics would really take my language skills up to the next level. The paycheck wouldn't be too shabby either.
It's funny how life transitions can make you feel so inexperienced and small. Buried underneath all that existential angst there is some hope though -- I've been trying to tease it out through positive actions and thoughts.
I had a very bizarre experience the other day. I was at the park running and this guy I'd never met in my life came up to me calling my name. Turns out he recognized a picture I'd posted from a running message board we both frequented. I was kind of stunned, and then he was kind of embarrassed and backed off. It's just funny what a small world we live in.
FairyChatMom it's so awesome that you do pottery. I am a person who is very passionate about that sort of thing but has very little talent for it.

Welcome to what has got to be one of the top three ever mundane-est and pointless-est MMPs in our history.
Back in the office today. I'm really liking that telecommute non-commute where I grab a cup of coffee then go upstairs, being careful not to trip on the dog who seems to be programmed to passively kill us by sleeping at the very top of the stairs.
Debating on whether to call the chiropractor or wait and see if what feels like a dislocated rib will settle down. It's a semi-chronic problem I've had for ten years since I fell down the stairs because some idiot screwed a stair railing to the wall with drywall screws.
My first-ever picture frame is all built, finished and hanging. Looks fantastic with the art mounted. This was just a "trial" of printing one of the photos at 26" tall. If I can sort out where to hang them, I have several others to pick from, and I can make them BIG. An eight-foot long picture of the Golden Gate bridge would not be hard do do. Just expensive...
We had a brief meeting with our caterer - plans are starting to jell. The logistics are worthy of a Dinner: Impossible episode.
Will our baker be able to get in to deliver and assemble the cake without being charged for parking?
Will there be enough electricity to plug in coffee brewers?
How do we manage crowd control going from a semi-private ceremony to a controlled guest list for the reception? This one's vital - Faire folk can absolutely inhale food, especially if it's free.
How many rolling hotboxes or cambros do we need? Or can we use someone's kitchen space?
On and on...

I'm copying my comment from the end of last week's MMP because I wanted rigs to see that she wasn't the only one who heard that bizarre story on This American Life.
I heard that too and thought the weirdest part was that the mother who knew didn't say anything at the hospital when the babies were born because her husband "didn't want to embarrass the doctor." WTF? If you realized that the hospital switched your baby with someone else's, who cares who would be embarrassed?? I'd be raising hell!
Glad the SIL got to work around the house, FCM. You're daughter's eventually going to appreciate it if you get him well-trained now! :p
Good luck with the move and the job hunt, olives. I probably missed the story somewhere, but why are you moving to NJ?
We had a pretty quiet weekend (which is good... I needed it!), and now KT's out of town for work overnight tonight. So I have the place to myself! Yay! Or I will after work anyway.
Work's been one of those crazy, "OMG everything's an emergency!!" kind of days. Has anyone invented a aerosol form of a chill pill? I'd love to spray something into the ventilation system that would Make. Everyone. Relax! Grrrr!

Hi Everyone! Happy summer! We've had so much rain here; everything is intensely growing and fecund. The rivers are roaring torrents. The gardens are incredible. Unfortunately, so are the mosquitoes.
I'm back at work after two weeks away. So of course I have to check out the newly functioning SDMB.
I gave a presentation in front of a small but international audience during these holidays--first time ever, and I got compliments on it! (Good thing my friend sent me a link to a YouTube video on How Not To Make A PowerPoint Presentation a month or so ago.) I got rained on. I slept in someone's basement whern the youth hostel lost my reservation. I bought a beautiful rock, and I hope a friend is going to make it into a pendant.
Also, I now have an iPhone. Want Monkey has been satisfied. :)

Howdy Y'all! I'm home too. Ok, I'm home workin' but still home. I was given a choice of whether I wanted to hang at da office or bring stuff to da cave. It was a really, really tough decision. Took me all of a nanosecond to decide! I'm glad I did cause it's RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNN' big time. I'd much rather be home all cozy in a pair of shorts and a tshirt even if I am still workin'.
I was given a really nice bday party Saturday. Before anybody gets all concerned that ya missed the big day, it ain't til tomorrow. Anywho, we had a great time. We went swimmin', ate lots of snackies. For real homemade Chex Snack Mix even! Not the store boughten kind, mind you. And a nummmmmmmy guacamole dip. Dindin was steak, baked N.O.T., broccoli sallit and of course cake and ice cream. Oh, and peach cobbler, of which there's a leftover pan full in the fridge. Beerverages a'plenty also, of course.
Other than that not much went on at da cave. I did clean up the place somewhat yestidday bein' as I had to find some way to occupy my time.

What's everyone doing stealing our rain?? It's really dry around here, and coupled with a veeerrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyy late spring, the local produce isn't so hot. My grape tomato plant's doing ok - it's producing, but half the leaves are yellow. Dunno what I did wrong; it's my first summer growing tomatoes! Phew.
All my reports are done for today. So now I've got a big fat lot of nothing on my plate for the rest of the day.
Seeing as I came in at 7am today, I suppose I could leave at 3:30 without getting any grief... but then again, if I find a reason to stay to 5, I'll be able to claim the hours as overtime instead. So I guess it boils down to whether I'd rather get home early today (and walk home, something I've been slacking on lately) or get some extra moola on my paycheque.
That said, the "extra moola" part seems to be a question mark since I haven't been paid for OT on the last couple of paycheques. Not surprisingly, the person responsible for inputting the OT has conveniently been ignoring my emails for roughly the same amount of time. When my manager returns from vacation next week, I'm tattling on slack-off OT woman. No one gets between me and my money, dammit.

gotti apparently it ain't a weddin'/reception without drama and angst. So, y'all are right on track. :D Don't let that achy rib thing go too long, ok?Right now, DH has me one better. A little backstory - about a year ago, he had a tooth crowned (Or was it a re-crown?) From Day One, he's complained of it not feeling right, only to get a pat on the head from the dentist saying it's OK, and he just has to get used to it.
It came out today when he was at his office. The pain's not the issue - for now, it's more of a "Hey, Where's my hat? I'm a bit annoyed that my hat is missing!" than actual pain, but he said that he nearly passed out from the smell.
Seems that part of not feeling right involved not being sealed right, so stuff has been rotting away for the past year. UGH! At least that explains the Dragon Breath he'd have now and then.

My husband is going to Rutgers for his Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
I'll be applying there this fall - for social work though, not psych. I still don't really know what I want to do with the rest of my life but I'm 25 already so I'm just going to fake it until it works itself out.
So at least 5 years in Jersey, and maybe a job in Manhattan, a HUGE change from this easy Midwest existence we've been living, but also filled with a lot more opportunity.

SIL and I just set up my Brand New Canopy!!! I got it yesterday on sale, and it's a wonderful replacement for the cheap plastic canopy I used the last few craft shows. Heavy, tho, and definitely a 2-people setup process. But now that I know how it goes, I can teach daughter and she and I will pop it up in no time! YAY! It's blue - kinda boring, but that's fine. What matters is what's under the canopy - that would be my works of art.
:D
Which reminds me - I need to find the application for this year's show and send it in...

I think my mom's out to make my wedding planning as interesting as humanly possible. We were about 2 days away from setting an appointment with a venue we liked near Sarasota when she mentions a site she wants me to look at in Mt. Dora. Yes, it's pretty, but I wish she'd thought of this earlier. If I can get an appointment with the lady that runs the wedding stuff there, I'll be up on Wednesday to take photos and learn about how artsy fartsy historic towns do weddings.
In other mom-related news, we got back on Sunday from visiting her and going to her friend's 85th birthday party. Acid Lamp got to meet more Icelanders, including one who looks a bit like Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame; it didn't, however, occur to me that he looked like that until after we got the introductions over with. It was a fun little party, and I can't wait 'til her 90th birthday party; there's always interesting people to chat with and awesome food. Yum!

Hullo, I'm back and I'm tahred! The SCA event was great, everything went off without a hitch and the Grandboy had a fabulous time. I swear he barely slept the entire weekend and we were having a rough time nailing his foot to the ground long enough to make sure he ate! We managed to keep him totally in the dark about the exact nature of the weekend right up until we hit the gate and he saw the signs, helped ably by my dear prevaricatin' daughter who totally crushed his little hopes ahead of time--see, he was guessing we were taking him to an event, right up until this exchange:
So [Grandboy] has been bugging me nonstop about where he’s going this weekend. He kept asking me to tell him and then he started asking over and over if it was an SCA trip. Well, yesterday he pretty much figured out it was a camping trip because I asked him to pack his sleeping bag, tent, etc but he kept pressing me to find out if it was an SCA trip. I really wanted it to be a surprise so I said, “How could it be an SCA thing? What would you wear as garb? You have to have garb!” So that got him all worried and thinking about it and then he tries to grab old costumes from his closet and saying he could wear this & that and I kept putting it down as not period or whatever and I finally asked him, “Look, did Grandma take your measurements?” He said no and then I said, “Well, if it were an SCA trip, she would need to make you garb and for that she would need to measure you!” Oh man, you should have seen the look on his face!!
This is the true joy of parenting I swear it!! :D
Nope, she ain't her mother's daughter a bit! Just for the record, he looked absolutely stunning in his garb, easily outshining kids who've been doing SCA since babyhood--there's an advantage to having a dinosaur for a grandmother--especially one who has spent years outfitting and garbing a large household. He was also the belle of the ball due to his spiffy boffer swords, courtesy of Grandpa Himself--that man can definitely put together an incredibly sturdy sword and the three he made got quite a workout over the weekend. Grandboy hooked up with a 14 YO kid we kept calling "Too Tall" because he's something like 6'3" and still going--really nice boy. They were having a competition to get the most spectacular bruises, up to and including being used as human pells (posts used to practice sword swings against) by kids using Dragon boffers (rattan, but with lots of padding, have to have light armor to fight with them) which I guess is a macho, testosterone thing wimmins don't understand. :p
For my part I did discover that I've been missing the SCA more than I realized over the past ten years. We got a very warm reception from a lot of people (especially those who were interested in the intricacies of our one-of-a-kind tourney trailer) and were urged multiple times to make it to various events different groups are sponsoring. I had a WTF moment when I finally put it together in my head that I attended my first event in Anno Societatis 20, that Grandboy was born in AS 30 and it's now AS 42! Holy crap, that's a long time! I'm an official dinosaur--this is made even worse because my active SCA years took place in the Kingdom of the West, which is where the whole thing began, and also that we were very well connected within that kingdom to a whole bunch of founding members, Board of Director's members and miscellaneous royalty. It's very interesting contrasting that experience with the quirks of a whole different kingdom with a much shorter history--An Tir (Oregon, Washington, part of Idaho and British Columbia) was originally a principality of West Kingdom so there's a bit of a "chip on the shoulder" attitude toward the parent kingdom.
So, I did have a bunch of fun, got my old bard book out and did some entertaining, guarded the sheep for the kids (they were running a sheep stealing competition and a bunch of the kids banded together to form an alliance--they ended up winning the war point, too!) and got thoroughly smashed Saturday night, which was fun since I seldom drink and I have a lot of fun when I do go for it. I made the boys Poop Juice, which is a sweet and creamy coffee based drink they love for the wide awake kneewalking drunk it provides. I drank a nice version of my favorite, Swill. I made this batch by mixing up a concentrated Pomegranate/Blueberry juice, added a bottle of strawberry margarita mix and a bottle of gold tequila. It makes just short of a gallon, all told, and I drank one hell of a lot of it! I did find that this version requires a day or so after mixing to mellow and meld, but once it does it's delicious and it has the advantage of not messing up my vocal chords with too much sugar so I could sing even when schnockered. Singing while schnockered is a useful trait in a bard... :D Amazingly enough, none of us had hangovers the next morning (although I did get some hellacious leg cramps in the night) and any residual rockiness was quickly dispelled by fresh brewed coffee and blueberry pancakes. Have I mentioned how much I love my tourney trailer?
We got home yesterday afternoon, unpacked most of the gear and took a nap, woke up, pretended to watch a movie while snoozing then went to bed--and I could still use more sleep!
Picked up SpaceDawg from her boarding adventure, she appears to have been spoiled rotten and is none the worse for wear. Pratchett apparently missed us sorely and has been following Himself around carrying his leather strap encouraging us to throw it for him--also climbing on us, licking our faces and nibbling fingers. Silly cat thinks he's a dog!
I see the board suffered a bit of a mishap while I was away--I wondered why the Mumpers were so uncharacteristically quiet! Glad it's fixed... Hope none of you were too freaked out by it... :D

*yawn* I confessed a minorish screwup I made at work on Saturday today, so I feel better now. There's nothing anybody can do about it and it's the sort of thing I really can make sure never happens again, so I can quit worrying about it.
I still feel stupid, though. I think somebody put something in the air today that made us all flaky or nuts. My boss has been running her butt off the last couple of days since we have a big group here and I think I might bring her chocolate once the whole thing is over. I don't know where she gets the energy!
I could use some Swill right about now. If I'm ever involved in the SCA again I am so making it. :)

Well, yes and no. We have plenty of employees who are not OT eligible on this project, including the entire management staff.
However, I am NOT one of them and it's pissing me off mightily that I am putting in the hours, following the appropriate procedures to get paid for them, but am not actually getting any money due to someone's incompetence. *
Anyhoo, I'll keep working the hours and letting them pile up. It'll make for a nice paycheque once they finally cough up the cash, which they will have to do eventually even if I have to go to HR with a complaint.
*(This may not necessarily be incompetence in her ability to input the hours, but it certainly is incompetence in that she's not even acknowledging my numerous queries asking for an update... she's a freakin' admin assistant, so her job description does involve being able to respond appropriately to email inquiries in a timely fashion)

You know, I never got into Twilight, it doesn't appeal to me.. which is really odd because I have a long term love affair with anything vampire and have read some of the most absurd, horrible and laughable vampire stuff.
The only good thing that I think has come out of it is they are reprinting my beloved Night World books by LJ Smith (another teen vampire/witch/supernatural world I enjoyed as a teen).

FCM, , glad to see I'm not the only one who calls it Home Despot.
SmartAleq, I loved your post, it reminded me of my daughter's cosplaying experience at Anime Expo (remind me to post about that sometime if I haven't already).
Am home today with a cold. I mean, who the hell gets a cold in the middle of July? Besides me, I mean. I'm just posting and half-looking at the TV while the Princess watches Nickelodeon, the Diva offers everyone fake tattoos, and both run off periodically in search of the ice cream truck. My sis (not Diva's mom) is in the process of moving to her new house and stopped by to help Mom paint the kitchen and drop off stuff she doesn't need for her new place. I'm too sick to help paint so am stuck in my room, away from the paint fumes.
Still wondering why everyone loves the Twilight books so much. I know it's vampires vs. werewolves, but why has that become such a favored theme over the past few years? Personally, I prefer pirates vs. ninjas. :)

Dentist said my teeth and gums are healthy but, by Og, I'd better start flossing or that won't be the case much longer.

I once dated a guy who belonged to whatever "Tribe" inhabits Western PA. He told me stories about how the WPA chapter and the EPA chapter would fight battles and the loser got Scranton for a year.
He also taught me the TwoChucks counting song

I have been roped into volunteered to teach an adult confirmation class. There are four adults at church (ol' y'all know who is one of 'em) who have stated they would like to be confirmed when the Bishop visits in November plus a couple of adults who said they'd like to participate in a class as a refresher. I have taught this class before and well, since ol' y'all know who is one of the ones who wants it, what could I say, I guess. Ain't a whole lot to it really. Just teaching The Catechism and talkin' about what it all means. So once a week for an hour durin' September and October it'll keep me off the streets.
That's the latest news from swampland.

I have a TV and a DVD player in my room now. I had to get an RF modulator to get the two to play nice together. When I tried to watch Nosferatu the picture got so pixellated I had to stop it before Jonathon made it back to Bremen. Betting is now open on how long it'll take the high-pitched whine to drive me crazy and buy a new TV. My current one is so old the pawn shop won't take it back.

Tonights dinner is homemade hamburger helper.
Hamburger Hash
1 lb hamburger
1 onion, chopped
4 medium NOT, diced
salt and pepper
2 c beef stock
1 tbs cornstarch
Brown hamburger with onion. Drain grease , if necessary. Season with salt and pepper. Add diced potatoes and beef stock. Simmer, covered, 15-20 minutes until potatoes are tender. Thicken with a slurry of cornstarch and a little water. Serve with crusty bread.
Easier than Hamburger Helper!

Hey, don't be dissin' on the SpongMonkeys there, Swampy! They're the tits!
Whoops, didn't mean to be opaque there, yes that would be the Society for Creative Anachronism (http://sca.org/). Here's a map, (http://misfit-robots.com/sca/map/index.html) so y'all can find out what kingdom you never knew you belonged to! Here's a pretty decent Wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_for_Creative_Anachronism) that covers the basics. Basically, the SCA is a lot of fun, a great way to spend a weekend and the perfect place for those whose ethical/moral structure is endoskeletal. Great place to learn new stuff, great place to be weird in since weird is pretty much a given. Also a fabulous place for kids since everybody watches out for the little ones, there are a ton of activities for them to engage in and getting teenaged boys into combat is an excellent way to keep them out of trouble.
If it interests you, look up your local group! The intensity of your participation is entirely up to you--as long as you make an attempt at medieval period dress and don't act like a jerk you'll fit right in. Fair warning, though, it's definitely habit forming if not outright addictive. I personally have served as a chronicler for two groups, deputy seneschal, chatelaine for two groups, autocrat for many events, bard of two groups, charter member of a principality Bardic Guild, marshal (heavy, light, tournament and war,) waterbearer, listkeeper, and general dogsbody. I also coedited a non-official publication called "The Interesting Times," which got around a bit, back in the day. I've been an active brewer, cook and seamstress and have a few awards for those activities as well as my bardic efforts.
At one point it got a little too all-encompassing, which led to my falling away along with moving to another kingdom and being just too tired to reestablish in another kingdom. Now I have my second wind and a twelve year old bundle of impetus so I'm feeling much more capable about diving back in. It's feeling like railroad time, in that both of my kids have been getting kinda nostalgic for the old days as well and have been making noises that I should lead the way back so they can follow... :p
I'd start an "Ask the SCAdian" thread but around here it'd be coals to Newcastle!

doggio I have no idea why they want to sit through confirmation class again. Religious fervor perhaps? I prefer to think it's because of my brilliant teachin'. :D Ol' y'all know who was baptized in the Methodist church but never confirmed. I am assuming, of course, that Methodists do confirmation. I have no idea. One of the other confirmees was baptized in the Southern Baptist church and I know they don't confirm. Two others were actually recently baptized and want to go through confirmation. Confirmation is not a hard and fast requirement in the Episcopal Church but it is highly recommended. I think we have several kidlets to be confirmed also but that's someone else's class to teach. I'm strictly a teacher for grownups.
Bear_Nenno started the July 29er birthday thread already. He's servin' in Iraq right now so he lives in the future where it's already Tuesday. He beat me to it again.

rosie, in case no one answered this one yet... LARP = Live Action Role Playing. Basically, what happens if you mix SCA with a side of D&D. In the grand scheme of geekdom, LARPers fall slightly below SCAdians and role-players, given that they`re combining both into a single hobby. :)

I kinda skimmed but I'm too shaken to absorb much. I just found out my insurance was canceled last Monday, apparently by my request. I got a refund in the mail.
I've been driving all week, and very nearly got hit on Saturday by some chick in an SUV who wasn't watching where she was going.
I'll be going over to the insurance people (by bus) with all my paperwork and going WTF in my most politest manner. And if they say its because I didn't turn in my inspection of the car, I'm going over the counter because I turned it in on the 12th, more than a week before it was due in or else my insurance would get canceled.
If it's any other reason I still might go over the counter because that is NOT COOL to cancel someone's insurance when they think everything is kosher.
Now I'm going to have a mug of tea, and try to calm down and get some sleep. If I can.

I had a nice visiting weekend, so I didn't even notice the boards were down until Sunday evening. A spare rib barbeque, with friends, is a wonderful thing. Getting to sleep over and have breakfast with said friends is better. I'm trying to talk them into coming down for a visit. Living 3 hours or so apart means we don't see each other often enough. And now I have a guest bedroom with an actual bed in it! First time in my adult life I've had someplace for guests to sleep that was meant for guests.
I have two cats, named Neko (http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos1179/2/54/11/23/8/2/208231154203_0_ALB.jpg) (large, grey, about 12 years old) and Shiva (http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos1728/3/2/96/92/18/2/218929602303_0_ALB.jpg) (smaller, brown tabby, about 4 years old - in the picture he's still a kitten). Either Friday or Saturday morning I woke up convinced that I'd actually named them Bo Diddley and Twinkletoes, respectively. I have no explanation for this.
I'm starting to settle into the new job, I think. I'm still worrying at myself that I'm not picking things up fast enough, except I probably am. It is, after all, a whole new company, product set, architectures, etc. They tend to use multiple terms for the same thing and the same term for multiple things, so like a good little tech writer one of my mid-range goals is to establish a glossary that nails down one word to one meaning. If only so my "poor little cranium" doesn't burst trying to work out which word is being used in which sense this time. At least I get to use FrameMaker again, which makes me a very happy tech writer.

I'm still annoyed at the world in general because of my once-in-a-blue-moon period. I went shopping today to see if I could find new sandals - my old ones, red ones from Nine West which I absolutely love, caused me to trip and fall down an escalator last weekend, which finally forced me to admit that they have outlived their usefulness. Everything is gaudy and overpriced. Grumble.
Maybe I'll try going shopping again tomorrow. This time not at the department store.
I'm all for magical hoo-has. But what does a magical hoo-ha do? Does it spout kittens and butterflies? Sing a little song when it's happy?
Happy birthday, Swampy!

I had 666 posts??? Wow. How did that happen? I didn't think I talked much at all.
My pharmacy just started using an online service for perscrption refills. It was awesome!!! Before I had to go through a stupid phone system that seriously took me about 15 minutes to refill my 2 perscriptions and with the online system it was less than 2 minutes. Sweet! Then they get mailed right to my house for free. I LOVE it. It's the little things that make my day.
Oh and I also love the Borders.com deal right now. Any book that isn't on sale you get $5 off though August 8. I had $120 worth of stuff in my cart (mainly Christmas gifts for the kids) and it brought my order down to $29.98. Plus I have 2 books for Ma in there, and she will pay me the $10 for. So twenty some books for $20? Works for me!!! Plus free shipping with orders over $25. :D Now today at work I'm off to look for el-cheapo books for me that are less than $5 so I can get them for free.

Happy burfday, Mr Swampus D. Bear. Hope it's a good one!
Hope everything is OK with the insurance, Flutterby. Hopefully it's just a "small administrative error" which can be fixed quickly, but it's really really annoying when those little things mean instant panic and freakout on your end of things.
Haze, I'm also curious as to what a Magical Hoo-Ha does. I'm hoping for the "sing a little song when it's happy" option, because that would be cool.
Vundy, shouldn't the frosting be white and frothy? :) Some Cool Whip oughta do it, actually.
Nice present, Dotty! To be honest, I'm usually not a fan of diamonds, but I'll make an exception for a gorgeous piece of hand candy like that one - clearly, your husband has excellent taste. I'm up but grumpy. Not great sleep last night--my neck is cricked and I can't uncrick it, plus the heat is back with a vengeance--I don't sleep well in AC.
I THOUGHT I'd be home alone today for the first time in over 2 months, but TH has decided to work from home today. Ever just really need alone time? That's me right now.... His car has to go in. I offered him mine, but he turned it down. The kids are going downtown with his mother today. Of the 3 of them, none of them are looking forward to it, I'm sorry to say. They do the same thing every year, despite the kids asking to do something different. I'm not saying that kids should be in charge of the the agenda, but after 5+ years of the Wendella boat ride down the Chicago river, I think they're entitled to do something else. Ah, well, it won't kill 'em! :)

Happy Birthday, swampy!!
And yes, swampy, Methodists do have Confirmation. I took the class and stuff when I was ~13. I think that's pretty standard. It's not as formal as Catholic Confirmation, but I don't know enough about the Episcopal process to know how it compares. Ours was very casual: we met with the minister once a week for... I don't know, probably 6 week, and then we had the service where we joined the church. That was it. I think the church I'm in now though has a much longer (like a whole semester) process so it's probably more varied than some other groups.
I don't sleep well in AC.
<snip>Ever just really need alone time?
Me either and yes. It's been so humid here for the last couple days that we've had to have the AC on overnight, but it's wreaking havoc with my sleep. Bleh. I hope it cools down soon.
And yes, I'm a big Me Time kind of person. Fortunately, KT was out of town last night so I had the whole evening to myself. I was even going to order Papa John's (KT doesn't really like it.), but the local store had a power outage! So no pizza for me.
I am a little concerned about what's going to happen when, someday in the undefined future, KT gets a job closer to home. Right now he leaves at 6:45 and comes home at 6:15 so I get an hour alone in the morning, often an hour alone at lunch (if I go home from work), and an hour after work. I'm not going to be a happy taxi if that suddenly all evaporates. I've been bugging him for 2 years to get a hobby or join a group that gets him out of the house one night a week. When he gets a job closer to home, we're going to have to have a Serious Discussion about giving me some alone time once a week. Going out of town overnight ever 3-6 months does not count. Hopefully the incentive of a kinder, gentler taxi will help. There are times when I'm really jealous of my friends who are in LTRs but who each have their own house. Yeah, it costs a lot more, but one's sanity might be worth it!

I started out this mornin' really good. Goin' to meet ol' y'all know who for brekkies then go to work. Ok, so brekkies happened and I start to work. I was drivin' twuck today for some reason. Anywho, I'm behind this dump truck and a rock flew out and busted the windshield. Right in the center. Of course the dump truck keeps on goin'. Anyways, since I was near work I went on in cause I had stuff I needed to take in that I'd worked on at da cave yesterday. I told 'em what happened and that I needed to go see my insurance agent and start whatever I needed to to get the windshield fixed. The good thing about comprehensive insurance is that I don't have a deductible for stuff like cracked windshield. So, off I go to see good ol' Tim. He looks at it, tells me to come inside, gets on the phone and five minutes later I have an appointment with a local glass company to get it replaced. So, twuck is gettin' a new windshield. The folks at the glass company brought me home even. It'll be finished sometime this afternoon and they even offered to come pick me up if I need 'em to, which I won't cause ol' y'all know who will take me to pick twuck up. That's my story. Excitatin' huh! Oh and lest y'all think I've decided to be a birthday slacker, I have work stuff to do for the rest of today and tomorrow, bein' as tomorrow is a telecommute day. I like this workin' from da cave thing a lot.
There is one fortuitous thing from all this. I have decided that when twuck's insurance comes due in September I am droppin' coverage down to what I just have to have since I only use him around town these days. So, I guess it was a good thing I decided to drive twuck if I just had to get hit with a rock while I still have comprehensive coverage.
Life. One great big adventure. :D
OOH! I got an ecard from a friend that's the Arrogant Worms singin' The Happy Birthday Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzXO_5e8oO0). HEE!

Flutterby, I hope you get the insurance thing squared away with a minimum of hassle and sailing over counters.
I can so relate to the "me time" thing. Unfortunately, I really don't get any either. Someone is always home or with me. Frankly, the only "me time" I get is on the commute to and from work. Not exactly quality time, is it?
Glad to see you got a shiny new windshield with a minimum of fuss, Birthday Boy. I hope your day is as nice as you are!
I am a tired Taters [/B] today. I could literally crawl under my workstation, curl up and take a nice nap.

They got it fixed.
What happened is what I figured once I calmed down and noted dates. You see, since my car is older than 12 years I need an inspection done. They gave me insurance for two weeks to get it done and handed in then it would extended in full. So I turned in the inspection papers on the 12th (they were due the 21st) and paid the remainder of my policy for six months.
Well the girl who took a copy of the inspection sheet made a note of the payment.. but not that I had handed in the inspection sheet. So my policy was cancelled on the 21st like they told me it would be if I didn't hand it in.
The nice lady took my info again, made me a new policy, used the check they sent me of my refund to pay for it, and made a note in my file that it wasn't my fault.
So I'm on the road again, but damn that was a shock to open that letter!

Anyone who wants $5 off of each regular priced book at Borders.com just put in this code at the end: BR41925 You can have it shipped to a Borders store for free, or if you have over $25 in stuff you get free shipping as well. So far I have 52 books in my cart for $29.32. Christmas gifts and books for me. I have a TON of under $5 books there for myself. A lot of classics that I've been meaning to buy. Free books for me! And if I don't like them, I can toss them on PaperBackSwap.com :D

Blargh. Working. Sort of.
Glad it was something relatively simple, Flutter, and that no counter-jumping was required to resolve their snafu.
Speaking of administrative snafus and the like, I finally resolved my overtime situation - it seems the girl who inputs the OT quit on July 11th.
Of course, since I'm still not on the email distribution list after 5 weeks of working here, I had no way of knowing that. On the bright side, it's not like the messages we send her are going into a black pit of forgetfulness without the courtesy of an Out Of Office to advise she's jumped ship.
Oh wait... they are.
It's pretty sad to think that a company that is in the business of communications can't even figure out how to keep an email distribution list up to date. Especially when you consider that my division's mandate is to simplify and streamline our operations. :dubious:
On the bright side, they did finally update my job title this morning. I can now officially tell people I'm a "Business Analyst" (which is nearly as descriptive as my previous title of "Business Consultant").

Happy Birthday, Swampy!
Today was a long, long day, but I think I'm almost caught up on everything at work. We have mandatory training all week, plus I need to leave early tomorrow, and all that time has to be made up somehow. It's really a pain in the butt, since it's slow season for everyone else.
I think I need to find another vet. I call in today to find out why I haven't heard back about Skunk's test results. I found out his vet only works Tuesdays and Thursdays. She was supposed to call me today, but didn't. So I'm supposed to wait a week to find out why my cat is losing weight and meanwhile, he's starting to look like a feline Skeletor? There's no other vets available to look at his test results? I'm definitely looking for another vet, but it seems like there aren't many non-VCA clinics left.
Magical Hoo-ha
1. A vagina that cures someone of anything (warts, depression, bad hair, psychosis, PTSD, fear of commitment, teh Ghey/Straight/Bi) once they put a body part in it. The woman the vagina is attached to isn't terribly important, just the vagina itself. A very common (and tedious) romance novel trope.
2. The hymen (or other anatomy) is placed in very unusual positions, as in anatomically impossible. Mostly found in badly written fanfic, but weird hymens, AKA Hymens of Steel, show up in a lot of historical romances, too.
3. Multiple orgasms the first time, and every time, no matter what, taken by the owner of the vagina as proof of having found her One and Only Tru Wuv.
I have read far, far too many romance novels, of every possible persuasion. Perhaps it's time I give up that particular form of amusement.

Blurf. Caffeination underway, but I cannot forage. Because of the power situation on the base, the mess where I get brekkified is closed. I left early yesterday because of the blackout to go home and take a nap, only to be paged for a grass fire.
We've been told to expect to lose power this afternoon, again.
Today is VWife's birthday. She has 5 years before AARP starts bugging her.
VWife has been having a problem with her Percocets coming up missing. It's been a few at a time, and she thought it was a matter of being forgetful about taking them. Well, she filled her big ol' pill box Sunday with the new refill, and the house cleaner came Monday. Voila, missing pills, and a lot more than usual. I've also noticed some change missing in the past, and thought it was VWife doing it.
Sharon (name changed to protect the guilty) has a checkered past, and is going through a very rough patch with her marriage. Up to this point, she's been trustworthy.
We're not sure exactly what we're going to do. We don't want to lose her, because she does a good job, and we like to stick by people having a rough time. We're also not pushovers, and won't put up with petty theft, or theft of a drug that my wife relies on to function. At the very least, the next time Sharon comes to clean, the percocets will be out of the house. I'm also tempted to make up a big sign that says
BUSTED!
and leave it in the drawer where the pill box normally lives.
I also think she'll lose her house key and be forced to deal with one of use being underfoot the entire time she's there. She's had the luxurty of cleaning by herself.

Statements like this from various folks here and my own recurrent feelings of I'd-kinda-rather-be-alone make me wonder... how many people 1) who are married or are living with a SO at least sometimes feel like they'd rather be living alone and 2) who are living alone have no desire to move in with someone? We seem to be taught as we grow up that it's The Thing To Do, but I find myself wondering if it really is. The people I know who seem happiest are those who have a relationship but live in separate houses. (Generally, they're all planning to eventually live together or get married or whatever - probably because most of my friends are in their 20s or early 30s so it's still The Thing To do - but I wonder if they'll be less happy once they're living together than they are now.)

taxi, I can't imagine day-to-day life without Mr. Anachi. Maybe it is an age thing but I can attest that I had an "eye-opening" when he had a heart attack three years ago. It wasn't that I didn't appreciate him, but I realized then how much he really was a part of mine.
I think maybe my parents' now-42 year unhappy marriage skews my view of the world a bit. That and the happy people tend not to talk about it too much, while the unhappy ones are often very vocal. So that can make it seem like there are more unhappy marriages than happy ones. Good to hear that there are happy marriages!

Statements like this from various folks here and my own recurrent feelings of I'd-kinda-rather-be-alone make me wonder... how many people 1) who are married or are living with a SO at least sometimes feel like they'd rather be living alone and
I think it's normal to want this, even in the happiest of marriages. I think it's critical to keep a bit of yourself, to get away or have alone time. In fact, this time and space to yourself probably keeps your marriage happy....

Was it here that I heard of a fabulous recipe for Zucchini cookies? I didn't bookmark it since I didn't grow them...but my neighbors gave me some....
A quick search turns up this (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Zucchini-Cookies/Detail.aspx) -- is that it?
The dust of an old political campaign has covered me. Ah, the fun of restricted collections. Take everything out of the folders it was originally shoved into, shove it into another folder, and pray that someone orders more Permalife paper before the newsprint acidifies itself into oblivion.

Lissla is HRH at least sleeping a little better than before?
I have no tips, I was insanely lucky with mine who more or less slept through the night after 6 months. Except he'd wake me up at ungodly hours of the morning to be up all day. (I watched a LOT of the CBC turning on aka Oh Canada at 5am and Canada AM every day for the better part of a year.)
Greek sounds yummy, Muppet. I'm not even sure what I have for lunch, my Mom was kind enough to throw something together because I'm having a bad day and overslept.

Funny, I was just talking about this exact topic the other day with a friend.
He and I have been friends for 7 years now - we started off dating, which ended rather terribly (he dumped me via email after ducking my calls for a week), and eventually re-connected as friends a few months later (once he owned up to being a tremendous jerk). We've been each other's shoulder to lean on through some incredibly disastrous relationships, breakups, breakdowns, jealous BFs/GFs and everything in between. (I'm sure part of why we're such good friends also has to do with the fact that it pissed off our exes to no end that we were so close, and we're both rather contrary folks)
Strangely enough, though, he knows WAY more about my bad relationships than he does about me and The Boy, because when he asks how things are the only answer I have to give is "Good. Really good." instead of the 1 hr "OMG, you won't believe what he did this time!" rant he used to get. I guess the good stuff doesn't make for entertaining stories the way the bad stuff does.
(For the record, he and The Boy get on like a house on fire)
Flutter, if there are any leftovers, I shall try to ram them through my CD drive and send them to you. :)

Busy morning with some blogging done. The last guy I hired to blog with us ended up doing one post and buggering off to parts unknown. I've just hired a new blogger who volunteered. He's young but he can spell and put a sentence together with a decent amount of coherence most of the time -- at most, some constructive criticism and a few corrections should have him doing a halfway decent job. He definitely needs to develop some style though. He's not bad, but his writing is fairly dry. I'm cool with that, but I think I need to nudge him a bit to loosen him up to get the more humorous and/or sarcastic and/or snarky juices flowing.
N.O.L. today is a new packaged pho I haven't tried yet: Vifon brand Pho Bo. (Beef noodles) This one is ... interesting.
To start with it comes with a wee fork and four packets: A soup base packet of course, a vegetable packet (looks like small leek or green onion bits), a packet of chili sauce, and a packet of palm oil that contains chili and beef flavouring.
I tried it with just the soup and veggie packet. Rather bland, and thin too. The oil packet baffled me a bit. It didn't really add any flavour to the soup, and I couldn't figure out why there was beef flavouring and chili added to a packet destined for a beef-flavoured soup with its own chili packet. But, whatever. It didn't seem to add any flavour, just made it a bit oily. The chili packet added a wee bit of heat (very little though -- black pepper would kick sand in this stuff's face) and a bit of extra flavour.
It has an ... odd ... smell. Unlike any Pho I've had. The flavour is weak but also not tremendously beefy. There are also two pale brown ... things ... that I presume came out of the veggie packet. I'm assuming they're supposed to look like bits of beef, but they have no flavour and the consistency of foam rubber, so I'm going to go with tofu. (The ingredients say "textured wheat gluten" ... or maybe it's the "eryngium" whatever the hell that is.) The noodles are soft and thin though -- probably the best part about the soup.
It's not unpleasant, but it's hardly inspiring either, so I think I'll avoid getting this one next time.
Also, "eryngium" sounds vaguely disturbing for some reason. It sounds like the medical term for a bit of internal anatomy. "I'm afraid there's a blockage in the left eryngium. We're going to have to operate."
Also, it rained today. Hard. The thunder was boomy enough to set off someone's car alarm.
Vbob - I think she should be called on it somehow. That's just not right, especially stealing prescription painkillers. I'm not saying fire her ass if you're trying to help her out, but it's definitely gotta stop.
ETA: First on four! That makes up for the crappy pho.

Well, I have a good marriage. I think so, Mr. Lissar thinks so, and we've been told by others that they think it's good. I think we're generally nice to each other, and that's one of the big secrets. Of course, we've only been married five years, but we've been together for almost ten. It's better now than it was in the early days.
I don't think my parents' marriage is great, but it's functional and sometimes affectionate. Mr. Lissar's Dad and step-mother have a great marriage, very loving. Also sarcastic. I love watching other happy couples- a lot of them develop a sort of ongoing comedy routine that's loving, exasperated, and funny.
Hm. Happy marriages I know:
Us
FiL and step-MiL
Best Friends
Best Friend's parents
Other Best friends (Nat's godparents)
Other Quasi-Daughter and her husband
Mr. Lissar's godparents (an amazingly ill-matched couple who nevertheless have a great marriage, and have for thirty years)
Those are the ones I know well enough to say with certainty.
I like time alone, but we're both able to be alone even when we're with the other person, not intruding on each other's space. It's nice. And we miss each other terribly when we're apart, which is one reason why this week sucks.

I've just finished eating my salad. I know you all just really care about that.
There is nothing of great note going on in the Taters household.
My mother called me day before yesterday to inform me my cousin's wife had died. She was 40 years old. It was cancer. I guess her last six months were just horrible and my cousin is not taking her death well.
The last time I saw this cousin was back in 1970 when we left Germany. I haven't had any contact with him since then. My mother feels I should send a card to both my cousin and his mother.
Uh...my cousin probably doesn't even remember me (I'm the oldest of all the children). Oh, I'm sure he's aware of me as his "cousin in America", but that's about it. I haven't heard from this cousin...EVER. I haven't heard from his mother since I lived in my mother's house.
I think it would be awkward to send a card. Am I wrong?

So, I'm home, I'm tired, and I'm not motivated to work in the basement. But I'll change into grubbies soon and have a go at it. Supper is leftover turkey tit that I froze a few weeks ago, Amish corn on the cob, and another side or two, depending upon how I feel.
Have any of you heard of banoffi/banoffee (http://www.hungrymonk.co.uk/pages/banoffi.htm)?? One of my daughter's English coworkers made one for us a couple of weeks ago, and FCD is in love with it! I googled it, and discovered it's even easier to make than I'd thought, since the "toffee" part is dulce de leche. The girl who made it for us used a graham cracker crust, which I will buy premade, and she used heavy whipping cream, but I'm inclined to just buy a can of whipped cream (Not so classless as to use Cool Whip!! ) I'm supposed to take dessert to a party at my sister's next week, so this will be one of the offerings. Brownies will probably be the other.

Taters, I'd probably send a card.
It won't cost you much, beyond the price of a card and overseas postage, but if your coz is in rough shape it might just mean a whole lot to him. I know it seems a bit weird and perfunctory, but those little gestures can mean a lot when someone is hurting, even if they come from a near- (or even total) stranger.

To those who think Shiva might be a Bengal, I'm pretty sure he isn't. Bengals run to the large side, he's only 10 pounds. Also, Bengal fur has a shimmer to it that his totally lacks. He is a mighty pretty boy, though, and the fact that he chose me makes him pretty special in my eyes.

Current annoyance: I can't log into LiveJournal. Every time I enter user name and password and click Login, it simply redisplays the login page, with my info entered. I am not happy. Also a current annoyance: I seem to have misplaced my Palm Pilot. It's not in my purse, it isn't at my computer desk, in either of my bathrooms, in my bedroom.... I have to have put it down somewhere! Luckily I backup regularly, and the confidential information on it is well protected, but I am still not happy that it's missing.

I think it's more a personality thing than a marriage thing, taxi. I know quite a few very happy couples and they each handle couplehood differently. Some of them can't imagine spending much time apart; others need that time and space and find ways to give it to each other. I'm from the "needs time and space" group and have lived alone long enough that I know togetherness would require some work.
I'm tired (didn't sleep enough AGAIN), but should get some stuff organized so that I can continue painting.

And I am now having a similar problem to LJ with the Straight Dope Board. The cookies don't seem to be sticking, and it also doesn't seem to matter which browser I'm using. Both of these are issues I've had in the past that were "fixed" by turning off my ZoneAlarm firewall. Since it is still off, I am at a loss to explain what is happening now.

Evening all. To be honest, I'm glad that tomorrow is the last day of July. It's been a very odd month indeed. Two co-workers, one a very good friend and the other who works directly in my office, were both hospitalized earlier this month. The man in my office went in for a stress test and the doctors didn't like what they saw, so kept him in the hospital overnight -- in cardiac care! The released him the next evening, but he was off the rest of the week, then had to wear a halter cardiac monitor the next weekend. Turns out that he had an arrythmia that he'd been taking meds for for a while; before the stress test the docs took him off the meds... which is why the arrythmia showed up and made them freak out. So the verdict was for him to continue to take the original meds.
My female co-worker and good friend, on the very next Monday, was taken out of work via ambulance to an area hospital that specializes in early stroke intervention, because they thought she might have had a stroke! She's younger than I am, btw. She had apparently gotten numbness in her tongue, and lost the ability to speak. They kept her in the hospital for 2 days--she was released on Wednesday evening, and she stayed off the rest of the week. According to her, all the tests didn't show anything; they couldn't find out what had happened, but she's on blood pressure meds now (her personal doctor switched her to a different bp med than what the hospital docs had her on). I am not a doctor, but think she may have had the TIA (transient ischemic attacks) which are also sometimes called mini-strokes.
Then, just this past week, two other co-workers passed away. One of them had a stroke several weeks ago - a lady, younger than 50; she also had lupus, but had seemed to be doing okay. She had the stroke, and went into a coma from which she never emerged. :( She passed away on Sunday. Another co-worker passed away last night; he'd been ill for some years and in fact had been hospitalized for the past few weeks for surgery. I think the doctors released him from the hospital so that he could spend a bit of time with his family before passing away. It's so awful; like I said, he'd been ill for a number of years and had in fact gotten so thin that he was practically just skin and bones--he couldn't even walk and had been using one of those scooters to get around, but he was still working up until about a month or so ago. He was about my age (mid-50s), and I'd known him for nearly 30 years.
So July 2008 ... I am ready to bid you farewell.

Another long day over! My gastro dude says I must be fine, so he doesn't need to see me anymore. I have a case of HellifIkno. Everything is back to normal, I'm negative for Hepatitis everything, including auto-immune hep, and apparently the ultrasound didn't show any fat in the liver after all, but they're going with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as a biopsy would be overkill, since I seem to be doing fine. I've come to the conclusion that my body is weird and I should stay away from doctors unless I'm spurting blood or a bone is sticking out or something, since I seem to be way off the curve for normal. Maybe I'm an alien! :D
Work was a little weird today. It felt like high school, not necessarily in a bad way. I wonder what tomorrow will be like? What should I wear?

Hi. Ugh--it's 0430 here. I spent yesterday attempting to get #1 son his driver's license, which we couldn't do after we sat there for 40 minutes because the BTW place never submitted his name to the state, verifying he had completed the course.

I'm about to call the BBB etc. Now the only day he can go is next Tuesday--IF they get this sorted out.
And the rest of the day I spent high o Flexeril for my trick neck/left shoulder. Dunno how I triggered this old injury, but it's down to a dull roar at this point. I can't fully turn to the left and it feels like something is out of alignment. Nice.

I wanna vacation! :: pout ::
OMG, I'm so tired.
Last night was a bit weird. I normally would have taken a cab home, but I was a bit too drunk to feel okay about it (taxi kidnappings/robberies are not uncommon crimes here) so I took up Co-worker's offer to crash at his place. He has a big bed (and no sofa), so we were able to both sleep in it without being crowded at all. I guess the weird part for me is that I've never been able to sleep next to a guy so neutrally before. There was absolutely no tension whatsoever, even when we bumped against each other under the blanket. I felt like I was sleeping next to my mom.
Not sure if he felt the same way. I will say this - if he wanted to do me, he showed remarkable restraint last night. :dubious:
I think there was a sort of tension between us before, but oddly after last night I don't think it's there anymore. I wasn't remotely tempted to do anything anyway, but last night did remind me of how much I like being in the same bed with another person. This has nothing to do with sex. I just like the close presence of another human being. (On a related note, Scottish Darling and I would often be on the department lounge sofa with her head in my lap, which probably did nothing to discourage the rumors of our lesbian tendencies. ;) )

Have a nice vacation, SO! ::waves handkerchief::
I'm up. I've watered plants even though it looks like it might consider raining today. It looked that way yesterday and didn't, so I have no reason to trust it today. Harumphhhhh.
Sounds like completely no fun, rigs. Hope the driver's license stuff works out quickly.
I'm going into work early because I need to get one thing done before my two morning meetings. After my meetings...I get to come home!!!!! Yay!!!!!!! It'll almost be like a vacation! (Although I still have to go in tomorrow.) My life is almost sad, isn't it?

Off to 14-hour day. I'm going to fix my schedule in the fall so that I don't have to do these anymore. Assuming certain departments get off of their asses and ensure that I'll be here in the fall.
New Roommate is now moved in. I shall christen her Toy Roommate because she works at a toy store and has several action figures. She brought her puppy Stormydog, who is an Outside Dog. Zeldadog doesn't know what to do with him. She's finally been out-hypered. :D

Mornin'
I is tired, and my stomach seems to be angry with the amount of Greek food I consumed (which, actually, wasn't all that much). It was nice to catch up with friends though... I feel like I've been living under a rock for the last few months, what with work consuming my entire life for the first half of this year.
Now if only my married friends would quit trying to convince me that I need to get married too, it would be awesome. I happen to LIKE living in sin, dammit!

Happy Birthday, BBBobbio!!
Must be a good day to have a birthday. It's my boss's boss's 40th birthday today too. So her boss brought in bagels. But so did my manager (for an unrelated event). So we've got a TON of bagels here. Can I shove one through the cd drive for anyone? We've even got 4 kinds of cream cheese if you want! (Although I don't know how well a bagel fits in a cd drive!)
So far I'm being good and avoiding the bagels. I didn't know about them ahead of time so I had breakfast at home so I really don't need a metric buttload of carbs now. But they look really really good. We'll see how long I can hold out!
I probably just missed it because the story, but I'm guessing Spaz got rid of WowCrackRoommate ok if there's a new roommate now...? Was it relatively drama free?
I'm taking tomorrow off so today's my Firday. Yay! And my team's having an off-site "meeting" on the patio of a local restaurant/bar starting at 3 this afternoon. So I only have a few more hours until I'm done for the week! Thank goodness. Other than Monday, it's been an incredibly slow week and I just wanna go home where there's actual stuff to do! Or sit by the pool if there's nothing else to do! :D

Morning all. This is a drive-by post. Still have lingering bits of gross from the flu I came down with on Monday. Spent my day off yesterday in Mt. Dora, looking at a potential wedding venue, which we liked and I hope my mom will like; spent the other 6 hours of that day helping Acid Lamp with the kiddos who gave me the flu in the first place. Took a photo of the strange Victorian Mason house (http://picasaweb.google.com/nashiitashii/MountDoraLakesideInn/photo#5228880059697574114) near the center. I don't want to get out of bed to get to work today, but I have to. At least 5 hours is better than having a full day shift?

As I was walking from the train to work this morning, I stepped wrong or something, my left ankle gave way, and I fell. Hard. It hurts. I limped and hobbled into my office, got ice and sat down. Took two advil and that seems to work OK as long as I don't move at all. Hawkeyeop and I were planning on renting a car this weekend and going to either New Hampshire/Maine or Cape Cod for the day, but now I don't know...My ankle is pretty bad, and I think I want to stay off of it. But he said, "how do you know now what your ankle will feel like this weekend?" Uh...because I have a pretty good idea of what my body is like and this is going to take more than two days to go away... Grrrr Boy!! So, all non-essential walking is being eliminated from my plans...some essential walking too if I can get away with it. We'll see what happens. My manager and her manager have been great though. They gave me a voucher to take a cab home which will greatly help alievate the stress that walking to and from the train, and taking the train itself would put on it. They also said that I could leave whenever I want to, but I won't get paid for the rest of the day, which I already knew. But ... but ... but I don't wanna spend my birthday tomorrow with a hurt ankle. :(
It does seem like it's Birthday week in the MMP.

Happy Birthday VBob!!!
Man I'm tired. I just can't seem to get enough sleep lately, though I go to bed at a reasonable hour. I'd better get some sleep though since Sunday we'll be going to the lake again.
Muppet, I'd probably prefer living in sin too. In fact, I don't know if I'll ever get married, or if I'd even be lucky to have a long term boyfriend. The longest relationship I had went down in flames because it was more he used me and I was a naive girl. Now I'm just stuck in my ways and prefer things as they are, I don't know if anyone would put up with my crap or if I could put up with someone else's.. it doesn't help that the last guy to show interest in me proceeded to tell the people he was living with (my friend's neighbours) he'd scored with me when nothing of the sort even happened.
I just want a decent guy who won't rub me wrong and I (hopefully) won't rub him wrong who can handle the fact that I can be a bitch at times (usually when I'm overwhelmed and feeling shitty), and do have a child. I don't want a guy who wants me just for sex (I can take a lover for that) or to have me pay the bills (been there done that).
meh I'd better go before this turns into a weird ramble of crap which I'm afraid it already has.

I think I've figured out what I/we are going to do about the house cleaner.
1) Prior to her next visit, we'll move VWife's drugs and the other valuables out of the house and put them under lock and key.
2) It started as a joke, but I'm making a one sheet sign that says
BUSTED
and put it in the drawer where the percocets live.
3) If I can find a camera fast enough, hide it and aim it at the drawer.
4) Let her clean house unattended as before.
5) Return home before she's done, and deliver The Lecture, which will go something like this:
Sharon, we know about your past, and we know about your present problems. We're the type of people who would and have given the clothes from our backs to help someone out. We're not schmucks, and stealing is way over the line; stealing prescription narcotics my wife relies on to function is even worse.
We have you on tape going through that drawer. Need I remind you that I'm on a first name basis with the sheriff, the county probation officer, the DA investagator, and two of the magistrates? (for real, MMPers) We could have you charged with a felony within the next 20 minutes if we wanted to.
We're also the forgiving type. You can figure that out easily because we're not firing you now. However, you have exactly no chances left. If anything goes wrong or comes up missing in the future, you'll be at the head of the list of suspects and out of a cleaning gig, even if it didn't happen on your watch.
I need the key to the house. You can expect to be cleaning from now on with one or both of us present at all times.
You asked for AA information for your husband the last time you were here. You should consider Narcotics Anonymous for yourself.
Whaddaya think of this?

Bon voyage, Nooner!
I'm all worried this morning--SpaceDawg is now refusing food, which she NEVER does. I don't know if she doesn't like the smell of the meds in her food or if the new NSAID is giving her stomach troubles. I looked up the medication (meloxicam) and nausea, appetite loss and diarrhea are common side effects and might be transitory or might be signs of a graver intolerance. Unfortunately, there are very few NSAIDs that are approved for vet use due to renal and liver issues so if she can't tolerate this drug we have very few options for her. I hate this part of pet ownership... :(

Whew! I made it through the morning without succumbing to the call of the bagels. And I went home and made up a very yummy sesame fake-crab salad. On a really good pita. The whole thing was Teh YUM!
Sorry about the doggie problems Smartie. It sucks when our pets start having problems, especially when we can't fix the problem for them.
That's really cool about the Confederate money, Spaz! Will it stay in the library? Be on display? Go to a museum?
I also like The Lecture, bbbobbio, but I'm guessing you won't be able to get all the way through it... no matter how many times I practice speeches like that in my head, the people I deliver them to are never considerate enough to let me get all the way through a lecture uninterrupted. ;) But as long as you convey the most important points to her (We know what you did. It was wrong. We're not firing you, but we won't let you be here unattended. If you screw up, we'll call the cops. Consider getting help.), I think it'll have the intended effect.
An early Happy Birthday, Fluttery! I'm off work tomorrow so I won't get to say it then.
nashii (Do we have an approved nickname for you??), the place you're looking at getting married in looks a lot like the place KT and I were originally planning to get married, except our historic hotel was in Upstate NY. But similar historic period, I'd guess. Really neat place. (The only reason we didn't get married at that place was that it closed - as in went out of business - a couple weeks after we booked it... fortunately, we hadn't put down any money yet though so it was ok, but it left us scrambling a little to find another nice-looking historic sort of place.)

It'll be deacidified and encapsulated in mylar before being returned to the collection it came from to sit in a box, waiting for a researcher to find it and squee. Where in the collection to put it is the question. I don't want to put it back in the restricted box with the original scrapbook, but...it'll be safest there. I'll ask the bosses when it comes back from treatment.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BBBOBBIO!
Would you believe that this cake template already has your name on it, VBob? So I know one year ago today was the last time I modified it in any way. Dontcha feel extra special now? Oh, and I like the camera/note/lecture idea. The stealing of change -- fine, it's stupid but forgivable. The stealing of prescription drugs someone obviously needs for their condition -- so not so much. You've a bigger heart than I would in those circumstances (ass, meet curb) so she should feel damn lucky and privileged to be under your part-time employ. Does she clean for other people too?
So I saw something really cool this afternoon. I was outside on my afternoon break having a smoke as usual when I was looking up at a passing cloud that was presently obscuring most of the sun. It'd kind of neat because with my sunglasses on, polarized as they are, I see the sun's corona peeking out from the fluffy edges of the cloud in a rainbow of colours.
So I did that today and noticed something else was up there with the colourful corona: The floating puffs of airborne dandelion seeds. And then the sun came out, so I moved closer to the side of the building I was on so as to place the sun just beyond the rooftop. Sure enough there in the blue skies, backlit by the sun's corona, were hundreds upon hundreds of the seeds floating by in the day's moderate winds. Through the magic of parallax, I could see that there were little white puffs floating many hundreds of feet in the air, little white specs high above increasingly larger little puffs closer to the ground, all floating more or less southward. It was a bit like watching snow fall, if snow fell towards the equator.
It's probably a little mundane and certainly pointless, but it was a rather pretty scene. I wish I had my camera.

No one has noticed. :sniff:I noticed. Nice shoes - wanna f.... ;) Oh wait, that's not what you meant, was it??
Happy BBBobbio Day!!!!
And good luck with The Lecture. You're a more patient individual than I.
Pretty good day at work, despite finding out that my old project has come back to haunt me a bit. The Proj Lead and some above him decided that we need to change the format of our final product. So while I don't have to rewrite it, I do have to rework it, and the program we use isn't the most user friendly. I think I got 3 of 11 or 12 pages done. I promised them to him by the middle of Aug - I think I can make it.
FCD has an interview tomorrow with a contractor that works on the same base where I am. If he gets the job, we can carpool - their office is maybe a mile from the gate where I enter the base. And since he wouldn't be commuting all the way to Goddard, he could afford to take a pay cut (within reason) and not lose any money. So we shall see...
SIL is at work till 9. I have to give the lad props - he worked several hours on his own yesterday, sanding walls and putting mud and tape on the bedroom ceiling joints. He has a good touch with joint compound. And yes, I've told him so - gotta give positive reinforcement and all that. Anyway, while he's at work, I'm going to try to finish the ceiling in the closet and maybe mud all the corner joints in the bedroom.
Plans for the weekend will be tiling the bathroom and laundry room. Which means I have today and tomorrow to get the laundry done. No biggie - only 2 loads to go. And since daughter is staying at the camp this weekend, we won't have the invasion of dirty laundry to contend with.
All I need to do now is get motivated. Yeah. That's gonna happen.

No, he's still around, but he's on strike two. That means he and his disrespectful brats have a high place on the On Notice board and one more strike from any of them will result in a swift kick in the balls and a toss out the door. Can anyone help? I've been a subscriber to the dope for about two years. In that time we've had two grandkids (one girl back in 11/07) and one boy (7/08) all faithfully noted in mmps. Everyone wants pics.
Okay, I've got $107.75 saved up for a digital camera. What do I do now? Digital camera, that I know (also for sending pics to other grandparents/aunts & uncles, etc). Then what?
Once I've got a pic saved, how do I transmit it to dopers? This from someone who's had the same email addy since 1998. Thanks for your help.
PS if you answer soon, I might also add pics of two of the cuter cats (sunshine & Lynx) around.
Love, Phil

Phil - I've found the best way to share photos here is to get a photobucket (http://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i178/fairychatmom/?special_track=nav_tab_my_albums)account, or something similar. Then upload your photos following the site's directions, and post a link.
Easy-peasy!

I thought it might be someone's Bday when I got up this morning, but I was wrong.
;)
I am home from work and it's monsooning out--it's pouring with thunderboomers and lightning! I love it. It's hot as hell out--yuck. I had a nice, but BUSY day at work--Annoying Coworker wasn't there. I don't like getting up at 0400, but I like getting out at 230pm.
Off for nappies (as in sleep, not diapers!)

Oops! That should have been "Happy Birthday, mousie!" Their posts were right next to each other, and I must have gotten the two posts confused. Sorry about that! And happy birthday a day early to mousie!
We were supposed to be headed to a team offsite at 3... it's now 3:25. I wanna leave! (The team "offsite" is more of a let's-get-together-and-go-have-a-beer, which should explain why I'm eager to go.)
After that I'm off for the weekend. See y'all on Monday!

Sigh.
I love my job. But right now, I'm trying very very hard to choke back the urge to strangle a particular coworker who blithely walked away from her mess and has left me to clean it up.
She decided, at the last minute, that she'd "work from home" today, despite the fact that she doesn't have the appropriate setup there to access some of our key systems. She did this knowing full well that she already scheduled a day off tomorrow, and that Monday is a holiday. So, by my count, she's just taken herself a 5 day weekend with a major deadline breathing down our necks - as in, TUESDAY morning.
So now I'm trying to decide whether I also blithely walk away from her mess and let her deal with the consequences, or clean it up because everyone is going to suffer if it continues to get ignored.
Oh, and on top of that, I'm out of legally allowable overtime for the week once you factor in the 2 hours I'm putting in tomorrow morning by coming in at 6:30am... which I'm doing so I can finish something else for her that absolutely needed to be done before noon.
AAARGH.

One wonders what exactly Mindude might have been smokin'... :p
MOOOOOOM sounds like you laid (layed?) down the law but good to SIL. Maybe you should look into that as a career option. Like, Motivation Consultant. :D
Muppet you're too nice. I'd let her stuff alone and when it all comes down next week you can innocently say "Well, I thought that's what you were doing when you took that work from home day last week!" Then again I am Mr. Meany Pants.
Ok, back to work. I promise. Really. Goin' now.

swampus, I'm inclined to play Meany Pants too... but the fact is that when the shit hits the fan, I'm gonna get splattered with it too because it doesn't matter WHY you missed the deadline if you've got a pissed off client. Might as well do it now and save myself the pain.
There are two types of people in this world - the Velcros and the Teflons. I'm a Velcro. :(
However, I'm done playing along with her delusional belief that I'm her flunkie and that she can just pass of something to me whenever she decides that it's beneath her. She may be a Fully Qualified Project Manager (as she never fails to remind me when the opportunity presents itself), but on this particular project she's just a plain ol' analyst... just like me.
Or as the five-year old in my head puts it "She's not the boss of me!!!!"

Happy Birthday, VunderBob.
I like your lecture too, but I'd not put the note in the drawer.
Why?
Because I'm betting that if she found the note, she'd be out the door after (possibly, depending on how delusional she is) cleaning you out of as much stuff as she thought she could get away with because she thinks you won't miss it.
And I'm also betting that opening that drawer is the first thing she does as soon as she walks into the unoccupied house, too.
So if you want her there for you to deliver the lecture to, don't use the note. And make sure you review the evidence the camera catches beforehand, or you may find yourself in the sticky situation of making accusations without proof.
Cynic? Me? Perish the thought!

Happy birthday VBob!
Ooh, beebs, how you doin?
The property manager could have warned me that they'd sent out guys to clean our windows today. It's bad enough they're tearing up the street in front of my house, but then to add surprise window cleaning guys? I mean, I'm a woman, I live alone, I notice when somebody starts messing with my windows!

Hiya BooFae! Did you ever get the handovernotes done?
Congrats on time off, Taters!
Hope your ankles better for your birthday, mousie.
Hope the pup gets better, Smartie
Muppet, I'd finish the job, then bludgeon her to death on Tuesday with a stapler.

I confess that his is the first I have opened the MMP, and I have read nothing. Happy belated birthday to swampy, and since I could hardly miss the best wishes to VBob it must be yours, so very happy birthday wishes to you too.
I have an issue, and who better to get an opinion poll from than the MMPers? Here is a peek into my personal world. (No TMI, I promise.) No, wait, come back! lol!
First, here is my dirty little secret which must be revealed before I continue. I love my little home that I own and can do whatever decorating/remodeling to, but the fact is, my little home is a mobile home. A trailer. It's in a very small "park", and while not everyone keeps their outdoor area prettified, the neighbors are all okay, and as I said, I own it, and it's comfy. (I may not be first class, but I ain't white trash, m'kay?) :p
So, the bit I need opinions on is this: I love skiffman, and I even married him, twice. However, we have very different views on things like privacy and respecting personal space and belongings, etc. We separated this spring, and as he is out fishing anyway it hasn't been much of a difference. The end of the season is approaching though, and I need to make a decision. I really don't want to leave him, I am in love with him, but I need some space.
Well right next door is another really cute mobile home, which is up for sale. We are friends with the owner and we have made it clear that we would like to purchase it. Moses would live there, and the kids and I would stay here, which would give me my space, and he would have a place to put all of his stuff and we would have a grown up place to spend time together. Time to talk, hell, time to 'appreciate' each other without the kids and the rest of the world bustin' in on us.
My question is, can two people who are completely committed to each other not live together and sustain the relationship? Thanks MMPers, I really need some other views on this.

Well, my favourite (second favourite?) author and her husband do, so it looks possible to me. Good luck.
The poetry game in Cafe Society's really fun. We played that game in the car on a 24-hour straight driving trip.
We're trying to nail the kid into bed. He napped (he thinks it was a nap) from five-thirty to six, and now he won't go to sleep.

Sure, why not. Everyone's relationship and need for space is different. I've recently been told that my personal space rivals the Yukon Territory, so that kind of setup sounds rather intriguing to me.

kai that sounds like a workable arrangement to me. Y'all are right next door to each other so Skiffman would be around for the kids and to help out with whatever things he helps out with on the home front. If he's happy and you're happy then sounds good to me! Plus if down the road you both decide you'd be happier living in the same place, you can either rent out or sell the other place.
Dang I'm tahred! I am seriously considerin' packin' it in for the night and watchin' teevee whilst laid up in bed til I'm ready to fall asleep which might not be too long from now.
Plus, still no big storms like we were promised. GRRRRRRRR

kai - the way I see it, as long as the 2 of you agree on the arrangement and it works for you, then it doesn't much matter what anyone else thinks, right? And you know we all love you no matter what.
Heck, I had an uncle and aunt who divorced, but continued to live in the same house - she was upstairs with the kids, and he was downstairs. It worked for them.
So, not to change the topic, but do you have any recent puppeh pics? :D

I agree with the others, kai; it definitely could work. Since the other house is right next door, it'll really be like suddenly having a much larger house. Sounds like a good solution to me.
Hope Nat finally fell asleep, LiLi.
Muppet, that stinks. But, yeah, I imagine cleaning up and then letting her know it's not happening again is your best bet.
Haven't gotten lots done. I planted a couple of things, watered a bunch of plants, did a little bit of garden clean-up, then ran out of inspiration. I think I'm still getting over last week.
I'm watching Hitch. Nice distracting movie.
Back later....
