So I've started watching Ugly Betty (boxed spoilers only, please)

I have a standing "date" with my 17YO daughter every Tuesday. We spend some time together.

Sometimes, money is flowing and we go out to lunch, maybe a little shopping.

Other times, the budget's a wee bit tighter and we do something cheap, like rent a movie.

This past Tuesday was a "tight budget" Tuesday, and we ended up in our local Blockbuster; I suggested we could look at the TV series they have, and pick one we were interested in but hadn't watched (we regularly DVR House, to watch together).

We found Ugly Betty. Both of us have heard good things about it, so we got the disc that was episodes 1-4.

We like it.

Vanessa Williams looks like she's almost having too much fun being a "villain".
I'd also thought, "only on TV could America Ferrara be considered 'ugly' by any stretch", but they did a good job of making her. . .well, not ugly, exactly, but distinctly awkward looking, while being surrounded by "beautiful people".

I love the way it's all good vs evil, soap opera stuff, all the while winking at the camera.

We'll definitely rent the next four episodes.

Yeah, that's just the way to watch the show. I did go "Huh?" at a major plot point, because most of the story lines and the relationships up to that point had been pretty realistic, but I decided to go with the flow and just enjoy it.

I love Marc and Amanda, and Christine, and Betty and her family.

I really like UB, much more than I expected it to. I think the whole idea of Betty being disliked by everyone there gets a bit far fetched especially when she goes to great lengths to help them all out (all the major frenemies she has end up owing her at some point or another).

I agree it's an up-market soap rather than a drama.

ETA: Who is the actor playing Marc trying to kid by saying he's not gay? My TV burts into flames whenever he appears on screen.

I had absolutely no interest in it whatsoever. . .or so I thought.

Season one was given to me as a gift.

Similar to AuntiePam I had to consciously shift from "Aw, c'mon now, that's just silly!" to just rolling with it.

I've only seen Season 1, but am looking forward to Season 2 (and beyond)

Marc's character is gayer than Ryan Seacrest in a Skittles commercial, but I have no knowledge (or real interest) in the actor's preferences.
