Half Man Half Wit

So, I'm usually relatively comfortable around computers, but this time, I can't really make heads nor tails off the situation -- when I start up my PC, after it performs the memory check, it tries to autodetect the hard drives, and freezes. But, and that's the strange part, if I cancel the memory test by hitting escape, it detects the hard drives without problem and runs happy as a fluffy bunny in a green meadow.
I just can't work out any sort of cause and effect relationship here -- how does the memory test affect the HDD autodetection? Is this indicative of a problem with my RAM, or my HDs/IDE controller? Or something else entirely? Just one of those random weird things computers do every now and then to foreshadow the coming machine uprising?
