He's always considered himself somewhat of the fashionista. Even back when we were in our 20's, the rest of us would go to ball games in t-shirts and jeans and he'd be spiffed up in his Beaver Cleaver plaid.

Sometime between his first and second marriages it extended to other areas of his life. Suddenly he wanted an espresso machine. He'd go out with us, we'd have a an after dessert Perino, he wanted a (swear to God) a "Cuppachino". Don't know who ever corrected that for him, but he's got it now.

Married the second time to a nice Italian girl that apparently only he knew was insane. The rest of us still kinda like her, and her extended family. He considered her kinda hoity-toity, which he liked, because he easily chose to join in and be the shopping snob. She was a little bit of a step up the ladder for him, in that she expected a lot in terms of material things but her family were just folks.

They married on the beach in Sanibel all by themselves.

They had the Sub-Zero and Viking in the kitchen. The fashionable small brick home in the neighborhood with $1 Million homes. He'd make fun of himself for having the smallest home on the street.

They traveled constantly - Italy, Hawaii, Barbados, Prague.....

He will NOT wear a pair of gym shoes out anywhere. Makes fun of people that do. Is sorta proud of not even owning any.

Drives a red BMW 325 that he bought back when that was the car to have. Still has it 140,000 miles later, and constantly bitches about how much it costs to repair and maintain.

Found a nice girl about 18 months ago, she moved to Oregon after she figured he'd never commit. Me and the other guys once again did the "keep him drunk and not alone" routine, just like after both divorces.

Following our collective advice, he finally just up and flew there one day and showed up on her doorstop. Rough patch, happy ending - so far.

She's very nice, very non-assuming.

Lately he's become the Man in Black, or Grey.. Crew sweaters, pleated wool slacks, those sweaters with the big diamond patterns on them that girls wore in the 50's. He dresses his father's age and I'll bet he doesn't own anything even resembling a hoodie or one of those two-sizes too big t-shirts you wear around the house or to cut the grass.

He's pretty sure he knows a lot more about things than you do. Not obtrusively, or rude, just one of those guys that will tell you what you didn't know. Even if you knew better.

ALL women want him after meeting him. It's kind of funny actually. I'd give examples, but it's take a while. Let's just say that while he's a great conversationalist, he's ugly as ass stuffed in a drainpipe and covered with squirrel roadkill.

Through all this, there's a core of about 4 of us that have been friends for over 25 years. Stood up in each others weddings. Like I said, kept him company in between marriages when he'd play bar shark and we'd all be wingmen. Through all this, we just kind of laugh silently, because hey, deep down he's a really good guy. And none of us perfect either. In fact any one of is bound to be the biggest jerk in the room at any given moment. We're fun in our own way.

But we were at a wedding Sunday of a mutual friend. By the way, the ex-girlfriend of his second wife's nephew. Second wife was there, along with a good chunk of her family. Also, by the way, he makes claims about the bride and the fairly recent past that go along with a couple paragraphs up.

We're standing at the snack and cocktail reception afterwards. I come back from grabbing a couple Stellas at the bar, and notice for the first time - chin pubes.

Just the tiniest square directly under his lip. Yes, it's intentional, he didn't just miss.

I think I'm gonna hurl. You think you know a guy, and suddenly: chin pubes.

For those of us who have apparently been living under a rock for some time, what the hell is "chin pubes" and does that relate to your pretentious friend?

The tiny patch of grown out mustache - not quite a goatee, just a slip of 'stache on the chin or lower lip.

Similar to this (http://freeandflawed.com/2008/01/31/chin-pubes/), only his is horizontal, not vertical.

I dated a guy with chin pubes / soul patch once. He had a shaved head (I mean meticulously, bowling-ball-smooth, every morning) so it was the only visible hair on him.

This is the Og's-honest truth: whenever we went out to walk the dog, or go grocery shopping, or someplace equally inconsequential, it took him FAR longer to get ready to go out than it took me.

I still can't figure out what the heck he was getting ready that whole time.

Seriously.

The soul patch.. didn't Future Hiro from Heroes sport one? It looks cheesy though I admit to keeping my collective few hairs when I get lazy about shaving. Stupid genetics.

Start to sing to him whenever you meet.

There was an old man called Michael Finnigan,
He grew whiskers on his chinigin.
The wind blew up and blew them in agin,
Poor old Michael Finnigan – Begin again

He might get bored with it quickly. :)

You aren't speaking of yourself because, IIRC, you aren't ugly as ass.

I don't know, I would have to put the Imaginary Jawline facial circumference below the Soul Patch in ultimate douchieness, mostly because of the ultimate douchieness of those people I have met who choose to sport this magic marker like line of fur along what they wish was their jaw line.

Well, I'm sorry, I have to be clean shaven, my hair is so blonde you can't even tell I have facial hair and then BAM I have a scraggly beard that makes me look like a wife beating drunkard. And no, my facial hair doesn't grow out farther than that. :p

Well then clearly I don't associate with the right women  (Actually, I don't associate with much women at all lately, not since coming home after graduating college and then coming home from Japan. There's my problem, of which I'm rectifying slowly and surely!) Thanks for the compliment.

Errr, I'm being such an attention whore sorry.

So, is this guy growing the chin pubes out? Maybe it's just a passing phase.

What's even worse than the soul patch is men who have the unfortunate luck to grow what really truly looks just like pubic hair, only on their faces. That is just the grossest look to me and I urge ALL beard-wearing men to look in the mirror, ask an objective friend, do whatever it takes and make sure your beard isn't pubic hair.

GAG.

For Og's sake don't ruin your chances by engaging women in conversation.

tell him it's also called a 'ball scratcher' and he may shave it off.

If you're a bonafide bluesman like Hound Dog Taylor (and that's a righteous dude with 6 fingers on the fretboard) or even Bo Diiddly, then you can have a soul patch.

even Jackie Chan can't pull off a soul patch.

So, what sort of facial hair is it OK to have? I'm growing a bit insecure here... The Ahab (http://files.myopera.com/E.%20Driver/albums/34806/gregory%20peck%20as%20captain%20ahab%20moby%20dick.jpg) is still the epitome of manliness it always was, isn't it?

My husband has an irrational hatred of soul patches; I thought it was just his thing. I didn't realize it was a gender-wide thing.

And now, because I'm in that kind of mood, here is Jim mid beard shave (http://img329.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bikerjimpb1.jpg) - he tried to look as stupid as possible for the picture to match the facial hair. :D

I've always thought they looked like pubic hair, too! I should have known I'd find a kindred soul here!

Been away all day in work things.

On the way home from said work things, he calls to ask if I'm up to a night at a sports bar tonight.

"I dunno, is that rat hair still stuck to your chin?"

"Blow me, I think it looks good"

"A tip my friend, when you have that look, you lose the right to say 'blow me' to anyone"

I ended up going out with the wife who has considerably less unfortunate facial hair.

But only really because I'd have had to drive 30 miles to hang there.

Sad.

Sad.

Sad.

Maybe there are men who wear a soul patch well but I've never seen one. They are not sexy. Either have a goatee, a full beard, or nothing at all. Occasionally men can wear just a moustache (those of you with thin lips, I'm looking at you!) but mostly men should avoid the facial hair completely. If I have to shave my legs, underarms, and hoo-ha, you can handle shaving your face. Seriously, no soul patches, mutton chops, thin lines of hair along your jaw, or any of that other stuff. ::shudder::

I prefer a fully grown in (not patchy) beard that is closely cropped to a clean shaven look on nearly all men.

But um...Bus Guy, you really have to tell him in no uncertain terms (not just jokingly) that he looks awful. I mean, really awful. There's just no excuse for flavor savers.

Everything you mentioned before can be excused...but this is just like mold on a man's face. I just want to wipe it off, like it's something left over from dinner.

Wouldn't it be odd to kiss a face with just some facial hair? Yuck.
