View Full Version : Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell
Elendil's Heir

Thoroncir is awestruck by the beauty of Rivendell, of which he's heard and read so much. The grace and charm of the Last Homely House, the gentle play of the river's waters, the vault of the stunning blue sky high above the valley's rocky walls... so much history has been written, so many tales have been told, so many songs have been sung, all here. Right here!, he marvels. Right here were Elrond and Arwen, Gandalf and Bilbo, Aderthad and Olindril...and the first Gilraen.
He looks about him in wonderment and delight, and smiles when he catches Gilraen's eye. "I can easily understand," he murmurs to her, "why your parents might have found it difficult to leave this place, my lady; but I am glad, for Gondor and for all of our sakes, that they did."
In time, he muses upon the meaning of that portion of the Elf-greeting which was directed at him.

Mulligan would be interested in the Elven cloak, more for the bonus to not being seen than the armour bonus. If Curunauth has any better ideas, I'm open to suggestion.
Good food, warm bed, safe haven. It's a beautiful place.
Aside to Elfstan, "I wonder what treasures might be found here, although if I ask they would probably show me, which takes all the fun out of it." ;)
Ghân is interested in the Elven Cloak, because he sees his value to the party in healing, bodyguarding and information.
Hopefully the Cloak will protect him, so he can do all that.

I'll certainly take a light lunch at least to celebrate our safe arrival. After that, it's me for the Hall of Fire to listen to some song, play a little in between times, and generally soak up the atmosphere which is like balm to the weary soul. :)

The three potions are identical in nature. The Flasks are leather covered heavy glass. All 3 provide Great Strength (22) +4/+10 6t+d6t.
Adding up all of the Gold and fees and expenses (Gorbo and a few others) plus the gems and Jewelry found the value is 1000 GP per person. It can be taken in gold or gems.
Mulligan, Curunauth and Elrohir offer you several trades. Your current cloak is rather valuable so combined with what Curunauth wishes to award and your share of the magic items traded in they offer you a +2 Elven Cloak of Protection and Elven Boots. This gives you of course a +50% on both Move Silently and Hide in Shadows. It also increases your base movement from 12” to 15” and pass without trace. Both items will keep you warm in weather cold enough for snow and yet are comfortable to wear in the heat of an Umbar summer. The boots also boost your AC by another 1.
Elfstan you may end up with the Bridle if Gwaelur does not want it and Curunauth thinks he can forge some “magics” into your new sword or perhaps even Sting. You may need to trade the +3 Knife in. He will look over both weapons and give you better details.
Ghân, take the Cloak the party found and we may have some small items that will aid your spellcraft. Are there any spells you are particularly interested in boosting?
Thoroncir: Your Sword shall be reforged into an undead slayer. I believe some additional enchantments will be made.
BTW: You stumped me and that is not easy in this area. Who are Aderthad and Olindril and how do they tie into Rivendell?
Deor: We believe the Mulligan’s Cloak would fit you. It is A Cloak of Protection +2 and give F pen. May not use with armor. Would that interest you with the buttons?
Gil-Gandel, Elrohir is sad to say that while he can make a few suggestions, he cannot instruct on the playing of Glinras. It was a one of a kind item made before Hollin fell and the smith who made it perished in the attacks by Sauron. I believe you will find it aids in both your Bardic charms and Bardic sleeps. We would like to offer you some arrows from our armoury and a magic bowstring but we have many old swords lying around if that would interest you more.
Miron we make the same offer, Arrows & bowstring or swords.
Gilraen Telcontar we have of course much to teach you in the ways of healing. We also have a few small items that may aid you.
Gwaelur, we can offer you an enchanted Dwarven Axe in exchange for your two. You can wield it one handed with the effects of your War Axe. It is a +4 weapon and has an overall +12 saves. The Bridle would probably do you more good than Elfstan but you may prefer the Axe upgrade. We have little else to offer you. We may have a few other things if this is not what you desire.
The lunch is extremely good and there is enough for even the Hobbits to feel full. There was plenty of juices, fine wines, cool crisp water with a hint of some flavor and good ale from the Prancing Pony no less. Elrohir plays hosts but does spend a lot of time talking to his niece. At the table are Celeborn, Erestor (who was the chief counsellor of Elrond), Lindir (an elven bard that was there when Bilbo sang his song about Earendil the Mariner), Farofind and 3 elven maids named Mirwen, Bélin and Cuin•glir.
Celeborn effectively asks Gil-Gandel for a very long report. Eventually Curunauth joins in looking clean and refreshed. With him are two elves he introduces as Agli and Narvil, they are both Smiths but Narvil is apparently also a mage.
Once we divide up the items and determine the trades, I will tally up the experience. Many of you if not all made level.

Well, I would be interested in hearing what else you have, but a new axe is hard to resist. Tell me more.
The Bridle might be best with me, since I am currently the one slowing the party down. If Elfstan doesn't mind I would like to have it.

The Bridle might be best with me, since I am currently the one slowing the party down. If Elfstan doesn't mind I would like to have it.
Or rather, what I meant to say here was. The Bridle might be best with me as it won't speed the party up as a group, and we could really use that extra hitting power (and I personally like the flexability it provides me of being able to continue to work with my shield and still use it.) That is, if you don't mind Elfstan.
What Exit? I currently have three axes (only two loaded) Will Curunauth take any two, or (and this is my suspicion) does he specifically want the two I have been using?.

The Dwarven Axe is the third. I figured those were the two you were looking at, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I don't necessarily want to get rid of the Dwarven axe anyway, but I am now wondering what I will do with that other weapons slot. I don't really see myself ever using the Dwarven Axe in favor of the +4.

I'm a little lost, the Dwarven Axe (Dwaxe) is normally packed onto one of the Ponies. As it was you were overload with a very large axe on your back, a war shield and a battle axe probably in your belt. Now you can carry a lighter weapon that does everything the Great Axe did and not have to carry the battle axe at all. This should be part of the benefit.
BTW: Thoroncir and Curunauth invited you to help with the reforging of Thoroncir's sword. Did you respond?

He doesn't have to ask twice...
A bowstring sounds interesting, especially if I can subsequently transfer it to the yew bow I'm making a project of. And I'll be asking for all the advice I can get on that while I'm here, too.

BTW: You stumped me and that is not easy in this area. Who are Aderthad and Olindril and how do they tie into Rivendell?....
Heh. I didn't want to just mention those characters from LOTR who were associated with Rivendell; Elrond's Vale has been around for a very long time, after all, and many great people have passed through, some of whom might not have made it into the Red Book of Westmarch. Aderthad is Sindarin for "Reuniting," Olindril, for "Hidden-brilliance." I made them up, but envisioned them as Dunedain, a man and woman of Linhir who once found a welcome and a refuge here, long ago. Perhaps one or both were ancestors of Thoroncir's, about whom he would have heard tales in childhood...?
BTW, Gwaelur already accepted, via PM, an invitation to help reforge Thoroncir's Numenorean longsword.

Celeborn takes the long report from Gil-Gandel and compliments him in the end for representing the Elves of Lothlórien so well. You have the makings of a few epic songs and tales I think.” You note that all but the Hobbits have wandered off at this point. The Hobbits are just filling in a few corners with small nibbles; especially Elfstan. Mulligan is mainly feeding the wildcat.
Hearing of your bow he offers, “If you want to seriously start working on your new bow, this is probably the right place and time. There are some highly skilled bowyers here that could really aid you. Some of our own people now reside here and work with the experts of Rivendell and the Smiths of Rivendell. They have developed some ‘tricks’ in speeding the aging and preparation of the wood. I would try to ask Bélin for some advice while you’re at it. She is very skilled in shaping bows to the user specifically and getting the maximum draw and release speed. Every bit helps in war.”
The bowstring can be transferred with no problems to most bows. The exception would be where the bowstring in integral to the magic of the bow.
On Gwaelur thanks. So he will be helping starting soon. As to Aderthad and Olindril , swooo, I thought I was slipping.

So over the next six days Curunauth leads a team that includes several other Elves at various times, especially Narvil. Gwaelur helps with the forging and heating throughout the process. He picks up some excellent tips he thinks he can apply to his own work. Thoroncir helps through the entire time. He supplies blood, sweat and hairs. He never leaves the workshop, sleeping with the sword until it is complete. Food and drink is brought into the shop where it appears Curunauth rarely leaves himself. He seems to be working on several projects at once in different sections.
The Númenórean long sword is at last complete. It is sharper and stronger and a bit lighter in the end. It will glow when undead are near with a pale green light of springtime grass at dawn. This will vary in intensity based on numbers, distance and actually striking. Its range is at least 100’ and up to 1000’ and likely to be in the 600’ range. It is now a +3 sword that does double damage to undead and triple to Del•gwils and similar monsters.
For Thoroncir and his heirs they can will it not to glow. Once per day it can give a strong feeling of type and approximate numbers of undead. They are very unlikely to fumble with the sword.
If carrying Kálthalion the scabbard of Holy Strength it will also provide great resistance to Undead drains, paralysis, fear and aging.
Gwaelur has time to try out his new +4 double headed axe and finds it is only a bit longer than his old battle axe and no heavier in heft. It somehow hits with the greater impact of his Dwarven Axe and is perfectly balanced. It is an old Dwarf made weapon out of Moria but enchanted much further by Curunauth himself.

Mulligan will probably spend that time getting use to her new garb, getting to know the Wildcat better, unwinding and relaxing to let cares and worries go free.
And at Night, sneaking around as much as possible to see if she can avoid being spotted by the Elves. If you are going to practice, practice against the best I say. :)

Mulligan finds that what Bilbo said is true, this is of course the best house to relax and unwind if that is your desire.
Sneaking around you seem to be doing quite well until at one point two strong elves grab you and remind you that they can still hear you and to please leave us some of our secrets.
Proposed work/exchange/reward:
Miron:
40 +2 very slender steel tube arrows with fine Mithril steel tips. Each weight only .075 pounds for only 3 pounds and a special quiver to hold all for another ½ pound. The arrows and quiver are the size of a normal score quiver but lighter of course. (5 pounds normally)
Refill the Lothlórien Quiver to 24 arrows again.
Upgrade both Short Swords to +2 from +1.
Gil-Gandel:
They help you make the yew bow and arrows.
The new Bow would be a +3 Elven Strong Bow for 17 strength specifically for Gil-Gandel. Thus a -25% fumble chance. For others the bow is only +2 and thus only a -10% fumble.
They refill the Lothlórien Quiver to 24 arrows again.
They give you 12 +3 Dwarven steel arrows that save at +11.
They help you make 24 slender +1 Lothlórien style arrows from the Yew shafts. As Gil-Gandel makes them he get his extra +1 to hit.
Bowstring: It will not break and thus ignores that roll on the fumble table. It give +1 to hit and damage. +1 speed factor and -5% fumble.

Posted with the permission of the DM….
After helping Curunauth and Gwaelur reforge his sword, Thoroncir gladly partakes of the strong Imladris wine which the Elven-smith offers them in celebration. When he goes to bed that night, however, his sleep is deeply troubled until at last he begins to dream.
He finds himself long ago in the main hall of the house of Vanimelde, a great lady of Arnor, chief of House Kanotir and ally of Arthedain. The house is filled with beauty and grace, but feels lived-in and welcoming, and Thoroncir has a bittersweet sense of what a treasured home it was for Vanimelde and her family before the long and tragic fall of the North-Kingdom. He knows, somehow, that three children are playing happily nearby, and he seems to hear Elven music coming from another room. He is filled with deep sense of peace and contentment. Oddly, though, the house feels like it is in both his distant past and some half-obscured future.
Then silence falls. Vanimelde appears to him, clad in a gown of forest green, a golden circlet set with gems at her brow. Once again he is struck by her strong resemblance to Gilraen, although she is both older and more careworn than in the portrait he saw. He bows, and she nods regally. She holds up a sword in a scabbard, and he recognizes his Numenorean longsword and the well-fitting sheath he got from the tomb at the base of this very house when he and his friends received their gifts a few days earlier.
The lady says sternly, "O knight-errant of Gondor! The sword you now bear was forged in Numenor, and came to these shores with the fall of that ill-starred isle. It was once the weapon of my son Celebruth, but he lost it, and his life, in the great wars against Angmar. It has passed through many fell hands to reach you, but already you have done much to redeem it, and for that I commend you. Know, then, that its name is Cirist, Ship-Blade, and with the enchantments now laid upon it I am sure your foes will find it more terrible than ever. The scabbard Kalthalion, Holy-Strength, was also my son's, and I am greatly pleased that sword and sheath have found each other once more, as they were destined to do. Now I charge you anew to guard and protect my distant kinfolk, scions of this noble house, and most especially she whom you love more than any other. This you must do, even at the cost of your life if necessary. For Kkosal awaits, dark and brooding, and if I see aright he may yet feel the edge of this keen blade. Thus by your strong arm, and with the help of your brave companions, we of this house may yet be avenged." She raises her hand in a blessing. "With Cirist and Kalthalion at your side, may you strike hard blows and true for your King, your lady, and your realm."
Thoroncir kneels humbly, bows his head and says, "Thank you, my lady; I swear I shall do my best."
"Of that I have no doubt, my gallant champion, the love of my life," she softly replies, and Thoroncir looks up to see that it is Gilraen, more beautiful than ever, who now stands smiling where Vanimelde was. Her eyes are ablaze and she is dressed all in white, an exquisite tressure of mithril and pearls upon her dark silken hair. The princess takes his hands in hers and raises him. She girds him with the sword and scabbard, and kisses him. It is a kiss quite unlike any she has ever given him in waking life, a long, lingering, yearning kiss that leaves him breathless. Finally she pulls back, smiles shyly and touches his cheek. His heart leaping, he tries to speak.
Then it is nighttime, and moonlight pours silver-white through the window. He realizes that he is awake now, and still abed in Elrond's house. All is quiet but for the soft snoring of Deor nearby. Thoroncir settles back under the covers, clasps his hands beneath his head, and muses on his dream for a long time before falling back to sleep.
In the morning he finds, happily, that he remembers it all, and he cannot help but smile....

That would be wonderful!
Further north now than just about any of his ancestors since Eorl, Deor will make a point of exploring all of Elrond's house that he's allowed to, especially the library. He's also interested in seeing just what exactly it is that Lorliana is here to research. He'll keep reading his spellbooks, practice his spells, and if he makes level, transcribe that Fireball spell into his spellbook from the scroll, and then practice it in the following days. Finally, he'd like to spend his free time hunting with Folca in the fields and forest clearings.

It looks like the bridle is going to Gwaelur, right? Does Curunauth have any idea of what he can add to the new sword or Sting? I guess I was waiting for the "better details" mentioned above before I decided anything. Did I miss one somewhere?
Elfstan spends time exploring Rivendell like the others. Well, more like Mulligan than the other others really. Naturally he enjoys spending time at their tables. He gets a chance to practice speaking his halting Elvish, much to the amusement of the Elves.
On their second day there, he seeks out both Miron and Gil-Gandel. He asks them both if they would consent to teaching him how to fight with two swords. He has two swords, he might as well be able to use them.
Last, he would also like to seek out any leather workers to inquire about getting some rigging to carry one of his swords on his back with or without his backpack.

Definite leveling: Gwaelur will make 5th with ease. Thoroncir probably won’t make 6th. Gilraen will make 5th.
Gil-Gandel will make 5th. Miron will probably make 5th.
Ghân will make 6th! It is good to be a Druid. He will soon need to return to Radagast to train in shape changing.
Deor will make 5th. Mulligan makes 6th! And Elfstan will probably be short of 6th.
Deor spends much time in the library where Lorliana spends about half her time and half in the Grey Room listening to the living history of Rivendell. She gushes about the Imladris to Deor. “This place is living history, so much more than minas Tirith.”
She is mainly here to fill in some large gaps I the history of the Northern Kingdom. That was why finding Aerdolan Kanotir on Amontiri was such a very exceptional happening for her.
Deor can scribe the fireball into his book, using up the scroll. Folca is enjoying herself.
RogueRacer: I don't know, it sounded like you were getting the Bridle is you still wanted it. Gwaelur opted for the excellent Axe. I was trying to find out if you were even interested specifically in the Sword(s) upgrade.
Curunauth looks them over and believes he can make a small adjustment to Sting and a bigger one to the Kkósal bane. It would require trading in the +3 Knife to make up the balance. For Sting he should be able to give you the ability to will off the glow and have an extra +1 to hit and damage in your hands and your descendants. For the Kkósal bane he thinks he can increase its bonuses and lighten it a bit.
Miron is happy to instruct and train you in using two Short Swords at once. He needs to practice with his new ones.
The leather workers can and do help him. A new backpack and a new back sheath take care of the current issues.

I'm confused on the bridle thing. Unless it's tied into our deals with the elves, I'm happy with it going to whoever has the slowest mount.
Although the +3 knife is handy, Elfstan will gladly accept Curu's offer to work on the two swords.
Elfstan throws himself at the sword practice. It helps him build more of an appetite to fully appreciate the fine food available!
Ghân will make 6th! It is good to be a Druid.
Ghân thanks Curunath for his generous offer to help with magic items.
Ghân has a number of pleasant items which cover many spells, but wonders if they could be combined / simplified.
Ghân would like to focus on these spells:
1. Summon Insects
2. Barkskin
3. Plant Growth
4. Entangle
5. Predict Weather
He has at present:
Wooden Jerkin (Barkskin improves)
Pouch of Freshness
(+2) Scimitar
Stone of Spell Storing (9 levels)
Mallorn Leaf (many improvements)
Scarab of Summon Insects
Taurgol (many improvements)
(He 'shares' a Magnifying Glass with Deor, but would be happy to pass it to him permanently)

Thoroncir enjoys the good food, old books and beautiful surroundings of Rivendell. He talks to the Elves and learns of the King's childhood here. He cleans and repairs his armor and gear, gets caught up on sleep, and takes long walks about the valley, lost in thought.
One day he asks one of the Elf-maidens what local wildflowers would be appropriate for remembrance and mourning, and with permission, cuts a large handful. He takes them to Gilraen and bows before saying, "Would you like, my lady, to lay these at the grave of your grandmother and namesake? If so, I would be honored to accompany you."

With too much time on his hands, Deor will volunteer his time to help out with anything a wizard can help with around Rivendell. Elves are surely more responsible than humans, but if there are hobbits around, and there seem to have been more and more over the last two centuries, then there are sure to be no shortage of small children stuck in trees that need rescuing, food to "disappear" from the kitchens, and general mayhem that needs clearing up.

Elrohir offers Ghân the following items and advice. “We cannot help you as much as you hoped but I think Radagast might be able to.”
You get the Elven Cloak and all that implies which also gives +1 AC and saves.
They offer you an enchanted bit of Barkskin a gift from a dying Ent. You use it when casting and it keeps the spell up for hours instead of rounds and if the caster uses it on self double that. (This will let the spell be up 20 hours for others and 40 for you.)
In place of the Scarab, they give you “The Queen’s Comb”. It will greatly enhance your Summon Insect spell and other insect spells. For summon insects it effectively triples the effect, duration, damage and range. They also move 3x faster.

Elfstan and Mulligan only get into a little trouble and then discover that Mulligan’s brother Ponto Took arrived the night before. He is a Fighter/Thief and not as accomplished a thief as Mulligan. He is the first to arrive but their Cousin Faramir Took the Thain is leading another 80 Hobbits to aid the Elves and Dwarves in some big war in the mountains.
Ghân is most grateful for the items (especially exchanging his Scarab for the Queen's Comb).
He will cast Barkskin every day on his Jerkin.
He asks politely what the benefits of an Elven Cloak are (of course some of the party can also tell him).
To show how pleased he is, Ghân essays some Wose humour: "A Wose cloak keeps you warmer and looks good.
It can magically 'Predict Weather':
- if the cloak is wet, it is raining
- if the cloak is warm, it's sunny
- if you can't see the cloak, it's foggy!"

Elven Cloaks with keep you warm in weather cold enough for snow and yet are comfortable to wear in the heat of an Umbar summer. They shed water very well of course.
They allow you to blend into most surroundings even in bright sunlight. For Thief types it specifically adds a +50% to Hide in Shadows. The also foil Infravision (a rare ability in Middle-Earth) for what they cover.

 :)
That is some serious shootage right there. The bow deserves a name, Lindorn, that is "Treesong" in the language of men. I'll acquire some dyes to work into the wood and pattern it with something suitably silvan-themed. Woven around these will be an account of the making of the bow and the names of all who helped, including Ghân who aided in the harvesting of the wood.
Since Elfstan wants to improve his Elvish, I'll make it a habit not to address him in any other language (except in emergencies). And if he wishes to accompany me to the Hall of Fire, he will hear much story and song which, if too hard for him to follow, will certainly familiarise him with the cadences of Elf-speech.
Mulligan, Celeborn might like to see that galvorn coat. It is an even more remarkable antique than Elfstan's mithril armour, and a poignant reminder of the ancient days in Gondolin and Doriath. The smiths would be fascinated by it too, all the more since the secret of its making died with its maker.

When Thoroncir brings the flowers to Gilraen and asks about visiting her Grandmother's grave she looks confused at first. "My Grandmother was buried far from here. She went back to her parents lands near to Lake Evendim (http://www.tuckborough.net/lakes.html#Evendim)."
She pauses a moment but continues, "Thank you for the thoughtful idea Thoroncir. I'm sorry we have seen much of each other the last week. I've been very busy with Elrohir and some of the other healers of Rivendell. Have you met Glorfindel yet? I am on my way to see him now. He has some instruction for me in Ringwraiths and slavewraiths lore. He has perhaps some insights into Kkósal that will benefit us."

... "I'm sorry we have seen much of each other the last week...."
I trust she meant to include the word "not" in that sentence. ;)
See the control thread for an explanation of the knight-errant's mixup below.
Now it is Thoroncir's turn to look confused. "I beg your pardon, my lady. I had been told some time ago, I now forget by whom, that the King's mother died and was buried here in Rivendell. It appears I was... misinformed." He coughs awkwardly. He would offer her the flowers to keep, but is unsure if that would appropriate, as they symbolize mourning and remembrance, or so Mirwen the Elf-maiden said.
He holds the flowers behind his back and hurries on, "As to Glorfindel, yes, I have spoken with him since our arrival here, my lady, but only briefly. I would be glad to accompany you and speak further with him now."

Glorfindel is very tall in person. He must stand nearly 6' 10". He is surprisingly soft spoken especially to Gilraen. He provides much instruction in the Lore of the Undead and the slaying of them.
Though very tall and very old it is at times hard to recall this gentle elf fought and killed a Balrog and drove the Witch King from Angmar and indeed chased the Ringwraiths into a torrential flood that destroyed their temporary forms.
His hair is as golden as the sun and occasionally Thoroncir sees it glow as he talks more passionately about some old enemy faces. He is pleased the Curunauth is now safe. "Though renounced Curunauth is the most direct heir to Finwë in Middle-Earth and it has always been my way to protect Finwë's house. Though of course Gilraen is the child of the line of my own sworn King, Turgon ‘the Wise’".
As to Kkósal Glorfindel finds Thoroncir's guess shrewd. "It is likely that Kkósal is indeed the Mouth of Sauron. If so he is no wraith to be driven forth by the likes of myself or Gilraen with her foremothers' gifts. He is a powerful sorcerer in his own right and well may be as powerful as the Witch King."
The session goes long as morning turns to late afternoon. Glorfindel finishes up, "Now my children, let us eat and speak of other things that approach."

He leads them to a small outside vine laden terrace where most of the party, an older Dwarf, a Hobbit stranger and both Elladan and Elrohir have gathered. The meal is excellent as always and the conversation light as the rest of the party and several more Elves arrive including Farofind.
The Hobbit is one Ponto Took, brother of Mulligan. The Dwarf is no less a Dwarf than Bofur here in Rivendell Representing King Thorin III Stonehelm of Erebor.
As dinner is finishing up, Bofur speaks up, "I thank you sons of Elrond for your grace and hospitality. It should be known that the Last Homely House has not diminished in generosity or wisdom despite its master leaving. It was many long years ago when I first visited Rivendell and I have only had the joy of visiting a few more times since. Now this time like the first I am here asking for help and seeking aid." He pauses and drains his ale. "It is war and war near your own valley and war that threatens the trade that King Elessar both desires and needs for Arnor to grow strong again. The Orcs of Goblin Gate and the nearby Kingdoms grow bold again. Gundabad is plotting some mischief is already known.” He pauses, “NO MORE!” as he pounds the table. “This time we shall carry war to them. Into their warrens and throughout their lairs. Goblin Gate will be cleared and then we shall reduce the lesser strongholds. The passes will be safe for decades to come if not forever from goblin ambush The men of Eriador and the Anduin Valley shall have a chance to prosper.”
He takes a longer pause, fumbles for his empty ale and then smiles as Panto grinning hands him a fresh mug.
“In this mission, an army of Dwarves from Ered Luin with at least 40 Hobbits archers and burglars approach and several hundred more Dwarves will meet us in the East. The Beornings and the Woodmen are aiding us and even a company of Thranduil’s people will be assisting. Now Elrohir has indicated that at least he and Elladan shall help us and that your party may well be willing. I ask for as much help as Rivendell can muster and I ask if any or all of you would be willing to aid us. We especially will need those trained in tunnel warfare and healing and magic. I understand that your group has experience in such battles. I warn you though; this is not a battle for the faint of heart. These Goblins have been pillaging and plundering and raping for far too long. They are to be exterminated. They are evil for evil sake and when one Goblin King falls another pops up that seems to want to find new worse way to prove his worth to his followers. The only mercy we will show is that of swift steel”. Another pause, “Are any of you willing to help?”
Glorfindel speaks first, “I plan to go and I speak for 30 Elven Archers. We will support the Chieftains of the House of Elrond. This menace needs to be stopped, but I also ask a favor in return. There has been a growing army of well organized and well equipped Orcs in the North in Angmar. We have groups exploring and scouting as we are speak. When Goblin Gate is cleared, can I count on support from the Long Beards to help us against Angmar in next year’s campaign?”
Bofur speaks again, “Aye, we will help in any reasonable way. A blow to Angmar is a huge blow to Gundabad. When enough Goblins realms are destroyed perhaps then we can think about Khazad-Dum.”
Farofind speaks up, “I can pledge a dozen swift archers mounted on Elven Horses.”
Elladan speaks up, “Indeed, in all over 100 Elven Archers will be following us but we still have need of independent groups that can work as a team and have a variety of skills. I hope Gilraen and her friends are willing to help as they are an ideal team.”
Panto, “It is Faramir himself, our greatest warrior since Meridoc the Magnificent that leads the Hobbit army. He is pledged to help as a representative to the King himself. This time let the annals record our presence. We bring our best. Sister, please persuade your friends to help.”
Bofur, “Thank you, thank you all. This is indeed the news I hoped for.” He looks expectantly to the members of the party. …

And with such a mighty host of the Free Peoples arrayed against the horde of Goblin Gate, it can only be a matter of time before that accursed place merits a new name! Mulligan thinks to herself. "Ask them to help, the hard part will be holding them back to leave some alive for the rest." :D

When his turn comes, Elfstan says, "I would be proud to serve the needs of the North and honored to join the rest of you."
Inside he wonders if the company is getting side tracked. They came north because of rumors that the Elves of Imladris could use their skills. On the way they were given (and accepted) a commission from the spirits of the safe haven they found. This task seems like neither of those, but then, how could they possibly refuse?

Indeed there are few now - and were few ever - wiser and more learned than Celeborn, but I thought simply that it would give him pleasure to see something that was made when he was young. :)
Glorfindel may know more about it; the piece has some ties with Gondolin, which was no more than rumour to Celeborn for most of its existence, but which Glorfindel remembers well.
Tall and stately he may be, incidentally, but according to legend King Elwe Singollo, or Elu Thingol, surpassed him as grandly as Glorfindel surpasses me. But of this Celeborn indeed could give accurate report, who was a lesser lord when Thingol was the King of Doriath and knew him well for many centuries.

The Dwarves plan to take the brunt of the dangerous work and most of the Elves will be outside though several off us will be going in. The Hobbits will be supporting the Dwarves but mainly as archers and burglars including Ponto Took who is both."
Ponto gets up on his chair and bows and Elrohir continues. "Most of out our people will remain out on the West side of the Mountains and Thranduil's and the West Lorien Elves will main stay to the Eastern side. What we need parties like yours for is to go after key side entrances and hold them and lightly explore. You will be supported by a mix of Dwarves, Hobbits and a few Elves and Men. We will send at least one serious Dwarven vet or Elf warrior with you to increase the safety of Princess Gilraen. If things turn bad, please ensure you get her out. I, Elladan, Elenwë & Captain Celepen (Swift Bow) will each be leading 24 Elves on swift Elven Horses to outride and rally wherever a horn for help is heard. Who can I best spare to send with you?”
Bofur, “My Grandson Bitur will be a good choice. He is probably ideal. In his Dwarven Plate he could hold a small passage with support nearly by himself and standing shield to shield with a steady veteran like Gwaelur here they should be able to hold for a long time. Bitur is quite accomplished with Hammer and Shield and an excellent orc slayer with some great skill at finding and operating secret stone works and pit traps or sliding walls.”
Elrohir responds, “Excellent choice is he coming from Erebor or Bree?”
Bofur, “He is coming from Bree, he was waiting there after traveling North from Aglarond and Lord Gimli who is off supporting the King Aragorn or Éomer yet again with Legolas.” The party will probably note a slight tone of disapproval.

Gilraen and the rest or you seem well suited to handling the Undead. Many of you have items specifically to fight them. I was originally going to send Glorfindel through there but they could use him more at the Wolf Gate. I don't expect this door to have hordes of Orcs but we would rather it was covered and the Dwarves need it cleared eventually to complete the clearing of Goblin Gate and Town.
Space The orcs have had several recent reversals. Gundabad had planted a secret colony about half way between Goblin Gate and Gundabad. It is gone. Gundabad itself had the lands around it raided and Angmar has had several scouting missions in force that causes disruption and problems for the orcs from Mount Gram to Carn Dûm."

Thoroncir is troubled by these words but recognizes the truth of them, and nods slightly to show he understands. This all sounds pretty good- the Elves and Dwarves running the show have a pretty solid plan, it seems. I'd like to know a little more about communication between our group and the other surrounding groups. It seems as though we're being asked to cover a possible Orc cave exit (the "Grave Door") on the Western side of the mountains, while a group of hobbits and elves (under Ponto?) hold the "Wolf Gate", a similar cave entrance nearby. In the event of an outpouring of orcs, a group of elves including Elladan and Elrohir will ride to support us. Otherwise, we should hold the Door against any evil force trying to enter or exit. I'm certain that Gil-Gandel's newest musical instrument will suffice for us to call for help if we need it. How will Elladan and Elrohir contact us, or the Wolf Gate team call for help either from us or from Elladan and Elrohir? Finally, how will we keep in contact with those on the Eastern side of the mountains, where the Dwarves will be attacking from?
I quite agree with the choice of Bitur as an addition to our party- we're already much stronger fighting at range than close up, and few in Middle Earth are better than a Dwarf at close-quarters fighting. He'll round out our party nicely for this mission.

The big main gate will have over 100 heavily armored Dwarves blasting their way in with Hobbits, Elves, Beornings and Woodmen for support. Five more major entrances will have 80+ Dwarves breaking in and storming the tunnels. There will be many Elves stationed outside but more importantly there will be 4 troops of extremely fast Elven Calvary moving at 36” base on Elven Horses. Each led by a great Warrior or Archer. Communications will be by runner and Horn or Drum signal. Wolf Gate is like the Grave Door being given a different priority. These and two other even lesser exits are just to be blocked and lightly scouted. Sounds the Horn for help or signal some other way. If they need your help, they will send a pre-arranged signal by Horn or an Elven runner.
The group holding/scouting the Wolf Gate is actually being led by Glorfindel himself. He will have a Miregol the Noldo mage from the Grey Havens, two Elves of Rhûn, an Elf of Thranduil who was once the Captain of the Guard, several Dwarves of Erebor, a Beorning Druid named Bjorn who Ghân knows, some woodmen archers and a Dúnedain Ranger.
Bitur should come close to matching Gwaelur in battle. He might be even better armored. If and when you enter the Door, he and Gwaelur will make a good front line for the taller folk to shoot or cast over. If the passage is wide or Undead appear, then Thoroncir can aid them in the front. You’re party showing up in time allowed Elrohir & Elladan to assign Glorfindel to lead the other strong party.
There will also be two separate main field hospitals. A Beorning Healer is running the Eastern one and several Rivendell and Dúnedain healers are running the Western camp. More details will of course follow.

Actually I think Gilraen is suppose to be protected from the goblins and and stray trolls and spiders. She is the main reason your group is being assigned to an area with undead. That is why Glorfindel originally was going to have that door. The Undead are actually afraid of him. :D
As far as bullets, they have nothing special but can give you a good supply of +3's to use.

Glorfindel gives Thoroncir a puzzled look, “Ah, I see you are nearly as brazen as Beren in all you do and not as ultimately polite as Tuor. This is not something I speak of but I can tell you what many already know. I was effectively a precursor to the Istari.”...
Before taking his leave of Glorfindel, Thoroncir says, in a voice colder than any of his comrades have ever heard him use before, "As I began my query with an apology, sir, I confess that I do not understand why you feel the need to resort to insults. If I overstepped my bounds, a more civil response would surely have sufficed. Truly, I regret causing any offense, just as I regret using the honorific 'my lord' in addressing you; I now see that was unwarranted. I have learned something from our conversation, at least: immortality does not necessarily endow one with either courtesy or humility." With that, he bows and leaves.
He will then write a dispatch to the First Sea-Knight, summarizing the party's adventures since leaving Minas Tirith, inquiring after the health of Riglo, and the disposition of the brigands whom the party captured before reaching Tharbad. He will ask the courier to Minas Tirith to take it there after the main assault.

Glorfindel looks a bit surprised but mostly amused. "It was meant that I perceive you as bold and normally comparisons to Beren are not looked at as insults. Though it is true that I do not think quite as highly of Beren as Tuor you I briefly took as my Lord. I do think very highly of him that won Lúthien Tinúviel's heart, wrested a Simaril from the Crown of Morgoth himself and perhaps the toughest of his accomplishments, won the good will of Thingol when with his brazenness he presented the Simaril to Thingol but of course his hand that was holding the Holy Gem was in Carcharoth's gullet. Westron is not my tongue of choice, please try to understand I was not insulting you."

Thoroncir, seeing now the root of the misunderstanding, smiles warmly. "Thus I am fully satisfied, and I withdraw my perhaps-intemperate remarks. I hope this unfortunate exchange will now be forgotten in mutual goodwill. All that ends well is well, as a wiser man than I once wrote, O noble Glorfindel. I offer my thanks for your time, and wish you strength and honor in the battles yet to come against our common foe." He bows again, and withdraws.

Late on the night of August 23rd a horse arrives with two riders. It is Taurernal the son of Belem who leads the Elves of Rhûn and Faramir Took the Thain of the Shire and one of the King’s key Captains in the North. They report that Lord Tuln of Belegost is leading 300 Dwarves from Ered Luin and 80 Hobbit Archers. They should arrive by August 27th.
Taur reports that his party is with the Dwarves but Bjorn is critically injured and in a near hibernation state as a bear. Elrohir, Elladan and Gilraen will ride out to meet the Dwarves and help the injured.
The party sees little of the eastern Avari Taur but they do see Faramir often. He is delighted to see his cousin Angelica and nephew Elfstan. He is married to Goldilocks Gamgee a younger sister of Elfstan’s mother Elanor. He is a tallish Hobbit standing a bit over 4’ and 54 years old. He is well armored and armed. His bow appears Elvish as does his cloak, boots and rope. He carries a finely made quiver and wears a small green elf stone on his brow. It looks like a small version of the one that King Elessar wears. He is one of the most respected Hobbits outside the Shire and as a hero in the Battle of the Sanford in ’52 and very well off and already married with children his being an adventurer is mostly overlooked. He has ridden often with his Father and Meridoc and even the King himself. He has visited everywhere from Fornost to Minas Tirith and the Grey Havens to Rivendell.
Glorfindel, Celeborn and Erestor work on the preparations for war. Farofind continues to act as your main liaison for whatever questions you have.
On August 27th a large party of Dwarves and Hobbits arrive near Rivendell. The Elves bring them out supplies and a Lord Tuln and several others are led to the Valley along with 6 of the Hobbits. Several Elves and Dwarves are carrying a litter with a large bear on it. Gilraen is escorting the litter with Elrohir leading it and Elladan following. A pretty Noldo maid is talking to Gilraen.
The Brethren and Gilraen work through the night and the Beorning is back on his feet on the On August 28th.
The army will be ready to move out on August 29th. It should be three days to the main gate on the Eastern side.
Expectations are to meet more Dwarves, Elves, Beornings and humans on the other side. Beyond the 300 Dwarves and 80 Hobbits led by Faramir Took and Ponto Took at his side. There are the two adventuring parties one with Glorfindel and yours with Bitur, Bofur and several younger Dwarves, over 100 Elves led by Elladan & Elrohir.

I would welcome the chance to talk with Taurernal - I have known few Avari. As for Thain Faramir, if he has been "everywhere" then our paths may have crossed before; and whether or not, I shall gladly join Elfstan and Mulligan and perhaps sing him a few songs of what his aged relatives have lately been up to in the South.

Thoroncir will introduce himself to the new arrivals, and spend what free time she has available with Gilraen, if she wishes. Perhaps a hiking trip, or a picnic? He will also offer to help the Elves of Rivendell with their patrols of the area as they keep Elrond's Vale safe from intruders.

Elfstan also thanks Curu for the work on his swords and makes sure that they are square with just the trade of the +3 knife. If they are, Elfstan will try to include a 100gp tip (assuming there has been a split of loot). Elfstan will also repay Gil-Gandel and Thoroncir the 30gp he owes each.
Before the party leaves Rivendell, Elfstan will beg the use of their kitchens to make some pies. They have been on his mind since finding the safe house on the journey. He will make sure he makes enough that the party has no lack of dessert and that any others that join them can also share.

Gil-Gandel
Taurenal is a truly excellent archer. No Legolas but better than most. His father is the legendary Bowyer/Fletcher Belem who gathered a scattered folk around him in the woods near Rhûn in the first age when the Sea was a large body of water. Taur’s bow is of exceptional quality and he mentioned something about it being just his beginner’s bow. He is himself an excellent Bowyer. He is also an Elven Ranger. He is around you age, his father having married extremely late in life.
You have heard of Belem and know that he may be the greatest bowyer living in Middle Earth and that he is among the best archers but his people are small in numbers.
His party has just returned from Angmar where they encountered orcs, trolls and three old towns infested with undead and one strange rogue wraith that seems insane but want humans and Dúnedain to move back to Angmar and to drive all the Orcs out.
Thain Faramir has never been over the mountains yet or east of Minas Tirith and you have yet to visit Bree, Fornost or the Shire so this is almost surely your first encounter. He can talk of old Tom Bombadil if you like. He is very happy to hear that his Father and Captain are both doing well. “I plan to bring the entire family south sometime in the next two years for a season or more. I hope I am in time for my father; he has been slipping quickly of late. Old Uncle Merry might just beat the Old Took himself. He does so well; I once tried to see if he had a ring of his own. I miss them both and my Father-In-Law Samwise. The Mayor was a great inspiration to the Shire and I always enjoyed my times with him and his huge parties near Bag End and under the Mallorn Tree.”
The pretty Noldo maid is the Elven Mage Miregol who is a recent member of Taur’s party. She has spent most of the third age in the Havens but recently traveled to Rivendell with four very strong Noldorian Warriors who continued on to Thranduil’s. Despite her very advance age she has lived a very sheltered life playing with magic and gems. Her father was a renown jewel smith that worked in Aulë’s shops. She was born under the light of the Two Trees and was part of the crossing of the sea at the Grinding Ice. This removed her wanderlust and she retired to be among Cirdan’s people early. She chose to stay though when the Ban was lifted.
(Of course I introduced 3 others Elven Maids at the original dinner, those you ignored and one was even a minstrel type.)
Thoroncir
Gilraen is kept busy preparing for the rapidly approaching war but she steals away a few hours each day to walk the paths and gardens of Imladris. She usually has you carry a lunch she packed for your picnics. She finds the Gardens a marvel and talks of the House so recently found and how it calls to her in some strange way.
The Elves thank you for the offer but turn it down politely however Curu would be glad for your help in his shops. He will not be going to war and will spend the time you help him instructing a bit in both smithing and Orc fighting if you are willing.
Elfstan
Your Uncle is perhaps the least Hobbit-like Hobbit since Frodo. Many have commented that he seems part elven. You know he will be a better Thain than any that preceded him. Having met Prince Faramir, you can see Pippin picked well in his naming. Among the other Hobbits are another of your first cousins Valiant Bolger son of Triumph Bolger and Rose Gardner and an Uncle Tolman Gardner who is only 42 and is the youngest of Samwise’s children. They are both Archers though Tolman is quite good with his sturdy staff and throwing darts and knives. He and Robin both work as Shirriffs.
Curunauth, “I am happy to help my young friends. The knife was more than enough and it was a privilege to work on Sting. Tis a very famous blade considering the three that bore it before you. Please keep you money and spend it wisely. You might find something among the Dwarves that interest you.”
The loot was 1000 GP each in trade gems.

Mulligan will also be practicing with her sling and getting to know some of the other hobbits who came with Faramir.
And finally, after much thought, looking through some books and chatting to a few people, the Wildcat finally gets the name of Freyja. And as such Mulligan will be trying to get it to accept its new name instead of its usual habit of ignoring her unless she is hungry.

Sir Thoroncir is delighted to slip away alone with Gilraen for picnics and conversation, mindful that their tranquil sojourn in Imladris will be drawing to a close all too soon. He, too, was deeply affected by the party's experiences in Vanimelde's ancient house, and is very interested to hear the princess's thoughts about it. He confides his dream to her [post 1272], taking care, however, to omit her remarks and their kiss. He savors their time together.
When the Princess Gilraen is busy with preparations for the campaign, he will be glad to spend some time with Curunauth, learning more about smithing and orc-fighting.

Well, you know me: only ever after one thing - subject matter for poems and songs. And I have struck it lucky here, it seems, especially with someone who can speak of the Light of the Trees, a sight I missed by many centuries. :(
As to Thain Faramir, the more he can talk of Bombadil the better I shall like it. I shall mention I hope to visit Tom myself within the year, on the Brandybuck's recommendation.
Taurenal's news is strange and interesting. (The wraith wants the orcs driven out of Angmar?) And if there is time, some day I would like to visit his father.
(I should mention that while Gil-Gandel has as keen an eye for a beautiful elf-maid as the next man or elf, he has no plans to settle down in Middle-Earth, believing that the years grow short indeed for his kind East of the Sea.)

Another wizard! Deor will make a special point of talking to Miregol and see if he can learn more about the history of wizardry in Middle-Earth. The academy at Minas Tirith is so young; he'd like to learn more of the broader history involved.

One night Glorfindel himself tells the story of the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.
This was in 472 of the first age when the great alliance of Elf, Dwarf and Man tried to assault Morgoth in his very lair, ancient Angband. It was Maedhros that forged the alliance and the Dwarves that forged most of the weapons and armor. Fingon the High King of the Noldor led his forces and small forces from Nargothrond led by unlucky Gwindor and Doriath led by Mablung and Beleg. The men of the Houses of Hador and Haleth were also in Fingon’s army; led by Hurin and Haldir respectively. A tribe of Easterlings marched under Maedhros and Maglor and remained faithful but another tribe that marched with Caranthir proved false.
Maedhros planned his attack with two armies. He led the eastern army including the Dwarves and the Easterlings. He planned to march openly across Anfauglith towards Angband and draw the main assault. Fingon led the rest and was to stay hidden to the west. Once Morgoth’s forces were drawn out a great beacon fire would be lit for the Western army to attack in surprise.
Sadly Ulfang's son Uldor betrayal stayed the Eastern army as Morgoth attacked the Western army that was now joined in surprise by the Gondolindrim. Unexpectedly Turgon had led 10,000 strong and brave Elves with his Captains including Maeglin, Ecthelion, and myself.
It was unhappy Gwindor that started the disaster though. His brother Gelmir a captive was executed in front of the western forces and Gwindor went nearly berserk and charged the forces of Angband. They made it to the Gates but there all were slayed save Gwindor who was now made captive. Many brave warriors of Nargothrond died in those dreadful moments. Fingon’s army had advanced and not in the best order. It was all I and Captain Ecthelion could do to maintain order and ranks on Turgon’s flanks. Fingon’s army was nearly surrounded and driven back at great loss but the Gondolindrim marched across the field like a flow of crushing ice and the orcs were scattered on their western flank. Then Maedhros finally arrived and attacked the orcs from the rear. The Dwarves fought like a single unit with interlocking shields and strong long pikes and spears. The Sons of Fëanor were everywhere bringing death to the orc army.
As the orcs were near retreat and defeat Morgoth unleashed his greater force. A fast army led by Glaurung of wolves and wolfriders, Balrogs, and Dragons. Uldor and his Easterlings then showed their faithlessness and assaulted the Eastern army from the rear. Uldor was killed by Maglor himself and the three sons of the other Easterling chieftain killed Uldor’s sons Ulfast and Ulwarth. Maedros rallied the remains of his forces to Mount Dolmed.
King Azaghal holding the rear for the retreat led most of the Dwarves of Belegost against Glaurung. Azaghal died but in dying wounded Glaurung in the belly with a final mighty chop from his axe. Glaurung Retreated in haste to Angband and much of his army followed. The Dwarves carried Azaghal's body from the battlefield. The remaining men of Haleth were saved from some dragons when the Woses formed a shield wall around them that somehow stopped the flames of the young Dragons. But it was at great cost and both the Men of Haleth and the Woses losses were great.
Gothmog the Lord of the Balrogs had the Western army of Fingon and Turgon hard pressed and succeeded in separating the armies. Fingon High King was flayed alive by Gothmog as one Balrog held him wrapped in his fiery whip. Hurin and Huor were with Turgon and urged him to “return to Gondolin so that some place of strength might remain to resist Morgoth”. In the end Turgon agreed and rallied the remnants of the Western army and retreated in order as Captain Ecthelion and I held the flanks and brave Hurin and Huor covered the rear. Thus Turgon, now High King retreated to secrecy with a force barely smaller than we set out with for the remnants of Fingon’s Elves retreat with us and joined the Gondolindrim.
Sadly Huor was killed defending this secret retreat and Hurin was captured and tortured for many long years. But of course from Huor came the seeds of Morgoth fall in his son Tuor and Grandson Eärendil.
Miregol follows his story with a bit more.
“Morgoth won a great victory that day. The strength of the Elves was broken save for the 3 hidden kingdoms. They no longer trusted men apart from the Edain themselves. Hithlum went to the Easterlings as a reward and the people of Hador were sorely oppressed and treated mostly as slaves. Within a year the walled ports of Brithombar and Eglarest were besieged and fell to the forces of Morgoth. The Havens of Falas were soon captured and only some of us escaped to the refuge of the Isle of Balar. Thankfully young Gil-Galad was there or we would have lost far more. He was too young to be High-King but already a great warrior and a very good sailor.
Indeed no song or tale can contain all its grief.”
Now there is a tale for Gil-Gandel!
Faramir Took is happy to tell every story and tall tale he knows of Tom Bombadil. He considers him a great friend and ally. Faramir, Ponto and Meriadoc all have Tom to thank for their Barrow Swords. Excellent weapons from when Frodo and the rest were rescued by Master Tom. Several Tooks and Brandybucks make a point to visit Tom at some time.
Taur tells Gil-Gandel that he is sure that Belem will welcome him.
Gilraen gives Thoroncir a very sweet good night kiss for good luck the night before the army is ready to leave. Thoroncir does not hear it but Gil-Gandel’s sharp ears and nosy Mulligan both hear a slightly disturbed intake of breath from Elladan who was nearby.
Miregol is also interested in Deor’s path to Wizardry. Her magic was won in dribs and drags over long millenniums and with much practice. She never had a master like Deor did. Though academy sounds a bit fancy for the loose confederation of Wizards in Minas Tirith and Osgiliath that live in separate buildings scattered throughout the two cities. She would like someday to find time to possibly exchange spells and lessons learned. Deor learns that her greatest spells deal with sleep, light and charms. She is a fine musician and has an enchanted harp that she uses in much of her spellcraft. She has recently acquired a Lightning Wand from the party she joined in payment for being their Wizard for a few years or adventures. She is actually of lower skill level than Deor but she does certain spells much better and of course can turn undead. She has a friend that is an Elven Cat and it too has many powers and is very ancient. Indeed Miregol believes that Missy is a descendant of her companion Warrior. She believes all the cats of Lórien are his descendants.
As to horses, Rivendell has many horses for the population and they are very fine horses. All obviously related to Cúran, very graceful and fast. They are certainly a separate breed from the Horses and Mearas of Rohan. The Elves go light on armor and don’t use saddles of course.

Thoroncir will be more reluctant than most to leave Rivendell, with its happy memories of both the best dream and the best kiss he's ever had, to say nothing of the experience of hearing about the calamitous, near-mythical Nirnaeth Arnoediad from one who actually fought in it.
