It is July 3rd.The Party is headed to Rivendell via Stonewaith Valley and a shortcut through the Drúadan Forest. They will then head for Edoras and perhaps Aglarond. Finally they will go to Tharbad then cross-country to the Last Bridge and finally to Rivendell. They are escorting Curunauth son of Celebrimbor to Rivendell and Lorliana a Gondorian Loremaster who is 22 and a party of 10 dwarven merchants as far as Tharbad

Minas Tirith to Tharbad has good roads the entire way. At Pony speed the journey of 825* miles to Tharbad should take 20 days. Then the small paths through the lands between Tharbad and the Last Bridge which are 250 to 300 miles and finally 120 miles from the Last Bridge to the Valley. So 20 days to Tharbad, 10 to 20 days to the bridge and 3 days to the valley. So 33-43 days.

Notable Animals:
Folca: Deor’s really well trained Red Tailed Hawk. He is often invisible.
Cúran: A very swift and well-trained horse of the Elves, Gil-Gandel’s mount.
Kali: A fine Silver Grey Mare of exception stock. Her lines trace back to Shadowfax. She is Renee’s mount.
Missy: The strange green eyes, white fur cat, companion of Renee. It will not talk to Ghân but seems very intelligent and dutiful to Renee. She is an excellent night guard and usually invisible now thanks to Deor.
Anca the War Dog: He is over 200 lbs, looks like a long legged English Mastiff. He stands a 36” at the shoulder and is long legged.
Fang: The ¾ Wolf Friend of Ghân
Brownie: The Owl Friend of Ghân
Swift Wing: A well trained Goshawk that works with Miron
Moose: An occasional talker and Orc Killer. He has now departed for somewhere to the West.
Theogrim’s Rohirrim War Horse: She is a large, well-armored, superbly trained War Mount. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Curunauth son of Celebrimbor. Curunauth is a master smith of Imladris. Celebrimbor was of course the 5th Son of Curufin, son of Fëanor. He rides a fine Elven Horse in very nice silver white mail.

Lorliana is a woman of 22 and was raised in the Minas Tirith and has studied for 12 years with the Loremasters. She has the money to pay a small fee and purchase a spare horse as soon as one can be found. She was hoping in Edoras. She mentions that she has a few small magics at her disposal. She hopes to study Elven lore first hand and learn much. She is around 22 and a fairly pretty blond, probably part Rohirrim and part Gondorian but not Dunedain. She is not evil and is in fact Lawful Good.

Dwarven Merchant group happy for the extra escort, there are 10 of them and they have 15 ponies for themselves and 20 packhorses. They will gladly bring the food supplies and take the dark watches. None are evil and of 2 checked, one was Lawful Good and one was Neutral Good. They are headed all the way to the Blue Mts, so they will go as far as Tharbad with you.

The Leader is Haro son of Tamin. He is 3rd level. The others are Frenin, Krenin, Ganil, Dumin, Janin, Drogan, Hartur, Bammar & Tumin. They have 15 ponies for themselves and 20 packhorses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some background, it is 63 years since Sauron and Barad-Dûr fell. King Elessar & Queen Arwen are in their prime and young Prince Eldarion is in his early training at age 20. There is still a constant struggle to tame the brown lands, Umbar, Harad, Nurn and the North. The court summers in Evedim near the lake and spend 9 months in Minas Tirith. Aragorn has campaign more often than not in the last 63 years, but far less than the prior 67. He and Arwen have had 4 daughters. Silmariën (FA45), Gilraen (FA47), Telperiën (FA51) & Fíriel (FA55)

Legolas has removed a small number of his people to Ithilien to support Prince Faramir in this fair land. He visits the courts of Faramir, Elessar, Éomer and Gimli son of Gloin often.

Faramir and Éowyn have two sons: Elboron & Caramir. Both are hardy Warriors. They say the Prince Elboron has the look of his father and Caramir of his mother’s people. Prince Caramir is a great Horseman and loves his visits to his Uncle. Both appear to take strongly after Faramir as they are aging slowly. It has been noted that Éowyn has remained very youthful for all her long years. She could be taken for Éomer’s daughter or even granddaughter rather than his sister. She looks to be in her 50s more than her late 80s. Some wonder if this was a gift of King Elessar’s healing or a reward for slaying the Witch King of Angmar. Faramir is of course still a hale and hardy man. A little over a hundred he too looks to be in his 50s.

In 61 Samwise Gamgee left Middle-earth via Mithlond. Merry and Pippin got their affairs in order and headed south to live in Gondor. Mulligan Took was among their escort. Samwise’s eldest Grandson Elfstan Fairbairn has recently arrived in Minas Tirith.

Elladan and Elrohir (http://www.ansereg.com/elladan_and_elrohir_factsheet.htm) of course remain the Masters of Rivendell and assist in the running of Arnor. They in no way have finished with hunting Orcs. Indeed, they have driven the Goblins far underground with their constant attacks on Goblin Gate and often roam north against Angmar itself. Elladan, Elrohir and Glorfindel seem tireless these days in hunting the scattered remains of these ancient enemies to the North. They often leave the care of Rivendell to the wise Celeborn. He did leave a thriving Sindarin kingdom in Southern Greenwood from where Gil-Gandel most recently hailed.

Thorin III Stonehelm rules the Durin Folk (Khazad). He rules from Erebor of course. His lords include Gimli in Aglarond, Lord Gíon of the Iron Hill and some lesser lords in the Blue Mountains and Fornost. The dwarves are again thinking of Khazad-dûm. Dori and Bofur are still alive, but quite venerable and rich.

Currently Minas Tirith and their allies are fighting a two front war in the South and a Campaign wiping out orc lairs in Ered Lithui.
Gondor is expanding and trying to build up a large force of horseman to supplement the Riders of Rohan. They are building a great road to Rhûn to create trade and build an alliance. They also hope to increase trade to Erebor & Dale. There is a project underway at a slower pace to improve travel along the Anduin. It is expected to take decades.

Arnor is repopulating as is the Anduin Valley. The Shire’s population is growing and their produce is helping to feed the North and even the South. They have steady wains heading to and from the Dwarves of Ered Luin are even supplying produce and pipeweed to the Grey Havens in exchange for salted & smoked fish.

A bridge at Tharbad has been built and the great bridge is being rebuilt. Tharbad is already a thriving and growing town under the command of the family of one of the Grey Company. The population is mostly just men of Eriador. There are small Dwarven and Hobbit communities.

The Great South road is rebuilt and maintained from Fornost to Minas Tirith. All the additional trade has brought much prosperity to Bree and the town and the Prancing Pony have both expanded. Fornost is still small, but growing. Most of the remaining Northern Dúnedain have moved near Fornost.

Ghân would like to move back just a little in the marching order, between Renee (=Gilraen) and Deor. He will be flanked by Anca and Fang, who will be 'introduced' to all the travelling mounts.

Fang (and Anca) will occasionally sniff the air for any interesting scents and alert Ghân if needed. Their main job is to defend the party casters (Ghân / Gilraen / Deor).

(Fang and Ghân are available for assisting in tracking if Miron requests it.)

Ghân is happy to share guard duty with Gwaelur, provided he will get enough rest to load spells the next day. Brownie will also be active on that watch (and do some hunting on the other night watches.
Ghân will Locate* prey for Brownie if desired).

Ghân will load:

1st (7) Detect Magic / Entangle / Faerie Fire / Locate Animals* / Speak Animals / Predict Weather** / Purify Water

2nd (6) Barkskin / Cure Light Wounds / Flame Blade / Goodberry / Heat Metal / Slow Poison

3rd (3) Neutralise Poison / Summon Insects / (Call Lightning) or ** (Plant Growth)

He has already cast Protection from Fire on himself and loads in his Stone of Spell Storing (total = 9):

Neutralise Poison / Summon Insects / Barkskin / Entangle

In his Pouch of Freshness, he has 200 Goodberries (1hp each), 30 Herbal Cures (3hp each) and 10 doses of Blowpipe Paralysis Venom.

Sir Thoroncir always enjoys (and indeed had not yet wearied of) the gallant banners, proud history, gleaming towers, teeming streets, quiet courts and bustling markets of Minas Tirith. But he also welcomes a return to the road, for of course he knows of no better place to be than beside his true love and oath-holder, Gilraen, Princess of Gondor. In the early hours of the trip, after leaving behind the great gates of the White City, they discuss the play Earendil's Last Voyage, and the meal they enjoyed together the night before.

The Knight-errant's horsemanship skills have improved with practice in recent months, and he rides easily upon his light warhorse, Seafoam, as the miles pass by. He will drop back, from time to time, to ensure that the rest of the party is doing well, before returning with a smile to Gilraen's side.

By the end of the day, the party has swiftly reached the end of Stonewaith Valley and are ready to slip through the woods that next morning. There was no signs of enemy activity and the handful of locals met indicate the valley has been safe since the party drove out the orcs. The birds scouting saw nothing amiss.

July 4th, the party enters the Drúadan Forest ...

At the next convenient break or stop, Miron will ask Ghan what the Wose policy on herb gathering might be. "I'm tempted to search our immediate environs for anything exotic or useful," he confides, testing his bowstring and absently checking the configuration of his brand-new quiver as they talk, "But I know that we're guests here, and if they aren't keen on our gathering food or firewood, I imagine that your people might get quite upset if I were to look for medicinal plants."

Perhaps Ghân might recommend some elder, well-learned in herb-lore, who could show you around, Miron. That would show respect and ensure you don't go anywhere the Wild Men do not wish you to.

(Sorry - we went through the Stonewaith Valley faster than I expected!)

Just before the party enter the Druadan Forest, Ghân asks to speak to them all.
(He asks Gwaelur to check that all the Dwarven Merchants understand Common, because he doesn't want a misunderstanding.)

He explains "This Forest belongs to my tribe. Visitors are rare. You are honoured.
Please do not take anything or light fires. Keep control over your animals. They are welcome to graze or drink.

You will be protected, even if you do not see guards.

My adventuring companions and I will be leaving the rest of you for a short time. Please stay where I show you. You will be safe."

Ghân turns back to the forest and sniffs. Then he nods. "We are expected. Please follow me."
(There is no sign the party can see, though Fang also sniiffs the air with interest.)

The party enter the forest, which is very quiet.
There is no sign of anyone.

Ghân leads them smoothly along, then into a clearing. There is a stream and beside it neat piles of fruit, nuts and grass. The trees provide shade.

Ghân says "This is all for you and your animals. You can eat your own supplies if you prefer. My companions and I go now. Do not try to leave the clearing. If an animal runs away, it will be brought back for you."

He smiles proudly at his party and mutters "Please make ready to meet the Headman of my tribe."

While the party makes themselves ready, Ghân draws Thoroncir aside, and asks for help.
“Please can you tell Lady Gilraen that the Headman will call upon her first. You are most welcome to escort her. My tribe revere her family.”

Then he mutters to Gil-Gandel. “There will be some Wose poetry at the ceremony. If you have enough time, please prepare a song or poem. It would be an honour for us.”

He reassures the party that he will explain each part of the tribal ceremony, and they only have to make simple responses.
There will be short speeches, poetry, tribal markings (only herbal paint, not tattoos!) and a presentation to each party member. No return gifts are necessary.

Ghân leads his companions through the forest for a while and finally into another large clearing. He shows them where to sit (in a rough semi-circle) and explains. “Soon my Headman will come. Please rise when he enters. You are welcome to sit when he does.”
(He looks nervously at Gilraen, obviously hoping this is not an insult to her.)

Although up till now there has been no sign of any Wose. Suddenly a whole group appear simultaneously and sit round the edges of the clearing, leaving just a small gap opposite the party.
Then an elderly grey-haired Wose steps into the clearing. All the Wose rise and Ghân signals the party to stand up too.
The Headman (some may recognise a resemblance to the statues near Dunharrow) sits and so does everyone else.

Water is served in wooden bowls, then the Headman rises. Ghân whispers to the party that he will act as translator and they will each be called forward for a presentation.
The Headman beckons to Ghân, who proudly steps up beside his tribal Elder. (The Headman speaks in Wose and Ghan translates into Common.)
“Welcome to our home, the Forest of Druadan. Ghân-buri-Ghân has told us of his travels with you. We salute your defeat of our orc enemies.”

When he says this, the tribe abruptly shout “Ha!”, then fall silent again.

The Headman continues “For this bravery, we grant you passage through our land.”
He pauses, then begins to chant in a monotone “King Elessar granted us this Forest land; And though we are a happy band; Of brothers, like a fire down to embers; Our Wose tribe welcomes you new members.”
(As he translates this, Ghân stares firmly at the party.)

The tribe give another loud roar, then the Headman continues speaking. “We first invite Lady Gilraen and Sir Thoroncir to come forward.”

(Gilraen goes forth with only her Champion for escort.)

The Headman bows to Gilraen. “Our ancestors lived here before your father’s people came to the land. Yet your father, the King, will live in our hearts forever.”
He beckons and a Wose with a pot of green paste advances. Gently the Wose smears Gilraen’s cheeks with two parallel lines, then does the same for Thoroncir.
The Headman smiles. “As honoured members of our tribe, we give you these gifts.”
Gilraen is given a beautiful circlet of rare wild flowers (Ghân murmurs that it will last a long time if kept mainly in her magic pouch).
Thoroncir is handed a scented candle (Ghân comments that it will remind him of the forest when burnt).

As they return to their seats, the Headman makes a cheerful comment and the Wose hum in appreciation. Ghân looks a bit embarrassed, but the Headman simply stares at him until Ghân finally translates “Don’t they make a lovely couple!”

The rest of the party then have the same ceremony carried out.

Gil-Gandel receives a hand carved wooden flute (in perfect tune).
Gwaelur gets a pair of decorated thick leather gloves (suitable for smithing work).
Deor acquires a twig of a rare willow shaped as a model of a magician's wand.
Mulligan is given a decoration of Holly leaves and berries (Ghân says it is for luck).
Elfstan is handed a selection of wild herbs and local tasty tubers. (Ghân winks at Elfstan and whispers "Think of it as second breakfast!")
Miron receives a large waterproof leather sack with intricate bead work.

"The eagle has his eyrie, the badger his sett, the fox his earth and the squirrel his drey; and the Wild Man his poetry, which no Elf can match. Yet after the manner of my own kind I will sing, by your leave.

"Cool is the wood beneath the spreading tree
Where in the shade the hidden spring runs clear,
Where runs the hare and leaps the hornéd deer,
Where dwells the Wose, the Wild Man proud and free.
There in the forest that he calls his own
Counting each leaf and every twinkling star
With eye that watches patient and afar
There sits the Wild Man on his woodland throne.
He knows the way of every bird and beast;
He knows the use of every herb and root;
Each tree its nut and every bush its fruit
Brings forth to grace the Wild Man at his feast.
Earth bless the Wose and make his tribe increase,
And no black-hearted foe disturb his peace."

It is less than 20 miles through the Forest and the paths the party is led by keep it close to 20. The party camps near the northwest edge of Forest and the night is peaceful.

July 5th the party is back on the Great West Road, heading for Edoras.
It should be around 120 miles to the Bridge over the Merino Stream in the Firien Wood. The road should be safe, but this is a sparsely populated area. In case of dire need, Gilraen reminds the party that we can look to the squads of each Beacon along the way. We are near Nardol and then we shall pass Erelas, Min-Rimmon, Calenhad and Halifirien (or Amon Anwar) of course near the Bridge.

Deor & Gwaelur know there is the good size village of Merino Bridge at the Bridge and that will be the first place to buy horses, but if you can wait, Deor mentioned an Uncle closer to Edoras itself.

July 5th passes without incident though it is a very hot day. Frequent stops are made to water the horses and it is finally decoded that with an Elf to lead and Elf to follow and Deor to help guide a bit, the party will take a long break at noon and then ride into the cooler evening. The party makes good distance this way and goes about 45 miles.

A late camp is made and the Dwarves as companions already prove useful. The prep the camp, make a smokeless cook fire, dig a safe latrine and assist Miron in setting a perimeter and ensure they supply 3 Dwarves at any given time to supplement the party's watch.

The watches are shifted forward for a later start so that at about 1am Miron, Renee, Elfstan, Mulligan and Frenin, Krenin and Ganil are all on watch.

Miron hears an odd noise to the south of the camp. Using hand signals he alerts the other watch standers.

What do they do?

If it's something dangerous we'll want to know long before it comes into camp, so I vote that at least one of our party members conducts a quick, stealthy foray in the sound's general direction, preferably circling around a bit, so that anyone who spots him and tries to follow his direction of travel won't be led straight to the camp.

I don't think that a Goshawk would be particularly effective at night, so Miron will refrain from sending Swift Wing up and risking him to nocturnal raptors or other predators.

I apologize for the confusion. My intention was to accomplish two things:

a) Make sure the necessary party members are awake. I mentioned Ghân because I thought having a Wose up and running would be useful, but you're right that having him rest would probably be better.

b) Get Brownie in the air so we have someone in the air who's faster and more perceptive than Miron.

Both seem to have been accomplished, so I guess that's it. :)

Morning already? Ah. Apparently not. *listens*. Highwaymen? Well, we had better do something about them, for the next band of travellers may not be as capable as we. Let's have the stealthy people for a start. I would like to scout the outlaws' camp as thoroughly as possible and, if we can, find evidence of any misdeeds they have been up to so far.

Miron, Mulligan, Elfstan and myself for beginners - and if we can have Ghân close to hand to interpret for Brownie, so much the better. What is the ground like for bringing in reinforcements in a hurry? In the quiet of the night, our armoured warriors will be noticed all the sooner by an edgy enemy.

Thoroncir untangles himself from his blanket and rubs the sleep from his eyes. I am all in favour of our taking prisoners if possible. We will meet deadly force with deadly force, but I am reluctant to begin it based on only a suspicion.

If possible, as I can outrun most bandits in this kind of country assuming that they're more encumbered than me and can't see as well as I can, I want to get in front of them and try to deceive them into thinking they're surrounded. A few cries of "Aim at the leaders!" and some rapid shooting (not at anyone in particular - just so that they can hear the near misses) might do it. (And intersperse the actual shots with some rapid twanging of the bowstring so that hopefully it sounds like several elven archers instead of one.)

That sounds marvelously chaotic. Let's try it! :)

Elfstan will stick with Mulligan since he doesn't have much for non-lethal attacks. If things turn bloody (which is almost certain), he will use his sling if lighting conditions and proximity of the enemy allows it. If it comes to close combat he will use Sting and look for exposed backs. If he and Mulligan end up deep in combat, he will try to get back to back with her for better defense.

If we get into deep combat

Err, I will be using the injection dagger, if I can get close enough without being noticed. Paralysis usage methinks.

Otherwise a sling if they seem more than ready.

Oh and if I get into deep combat, I will be running for someone who is more capable than me leading the enemy away.

Elfstan, you may be a great hobbit wielding a fantastic blade, but a warrior you are not. Disgression is most definitely the better part of valour. ;)

That's why the sling was my first choice. I was just trying to cover some bases for when What Exit does his thing. This encounter seems like it has the potential for us to get separated from the tanks. If through misfortune we end up with foes around us, I would rather fight than expose my back. I guess it does depend on the number of foes and how soon we can expect help though. Give me a head start and as shown with the very first orcs we met together, I don't mind running for help! A smoke bomb from you would hopefully give us a head start! ;)

Haro son of Tamin says he will blow a blast on his own horn if help is needed by them.

Brownie races back to the brigands.

The Elves and Hawks head out swiftly and quietly.

The Hobbits follow at a job but 90’ behind.

All 3 spellscasters follow escorted by Thoroncir and Gwaelur and Fang and Anca of course.

The Brigands are only about 1500’ away in the cold camp and are rapidly breaking camp as quickly and quietly as possible. The Elves go around to the far side. They count only 12 men. Gil-Gandel signals this to Folca and thusly Deor.

Brownie has rushed back to Ghân alerting him that one man has moved south east.

A very basic map. (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b127/jrfranchi/Castle%20Building/BrigandsonGreatWestRoad.jpg)

Ghân aims an Entangle to the far western side of the camp. Deor sleeps 9 of them. one remains nearer to the party on the Eastern side and 2 are apparently entangled and struggling feebly.

Sir Thoroncir will approach the brigands' camp more closely with those whom he is escorting. When he can fully see the situation, he shouts, "Yield in the name of the King!" If any resist, he will move in with his longsword and shield, ready for action.

He also suggests that Ghan sic his dogs on the brigand heading southeast, to stop and restrain, not to kill.

Nice map!

Thanks What?, your map is really handy. :)

Seeing that the bandits have apparently been arrested without incident Miron subtly relaxes, managing not to convey his slight disappointment at the lost chance to put on a two-elf FX show for the benefit of any remaining bandits.

"They are presumably yet unaware that we two are out here," he whispers to Gil, "So might I suggest that we keep it that way, at least until we are completely sure that we've captured everyone from this bunch?"

Resist or try to escape, however, and it will go badly for you. Now answer truthfully as you value your freedom. Who are you, and what are you doing here?"

The canines and Elves race after the final brigand. Fang swiftly get around in front and lets out a large growl. The brigand stops short and swiftly pulls out his short sword. Anca bowls him over grabbing the brigand's arm and clamps down until the sword is dropped.

At this point Gil-Gandel and Miron show up.

The Hobbits tie up the prisoners except those in the entangle. There are 5 in the entangle. Ghân will need to handle them.

The lead prisoner in answer to Thoroncir, "We are camping, why have you attacked us?"

Gilraen casts Detect Evil and reports that the leader and 6 others are evil.

Actually Princess Gilraen and to a lesser degree Sir Thoroncir do. On the other hand, neither has any experience in using their position of authority.

A questioning is quite in order and what to do with the evil folk is going to be the 64 Gold Piece Question.

We hold no position of authority in Gondor, do we?Like the DM said, two of the party members not only have the authority, in fact the King's Justice is their responsibility. It sounds to me like Gondor just got some new recruits for the road crew. That said, this could be quite a time waster and bother. We will probably have to do something like take them to the nearest outpost capable of handling this many prisoners. Let's hope one is on the way!

Gilraen to Gwaelur as a whispered aside, "This is why I liked the idea of a decoy, it would have removed all doubt. Still evil and probably brigands will be hard to let go. Let's see what unfolds."

The Leader to Thoroncir, "We are but a poor folk and between seasonal work we must make do selling used goods and the products of our woman's handicraft. Surely there is nothing wrong in what we do?"

The Hobbits begin a more detailed search and examination. The purses and pouches have varying amounts of wear and many still have coins within them. Oddly, many have blood stains. Two of the campers have small collections of gold teeth and most packs have some odd belonging in them. One contains some letters that on examination appear to be between many different people of Gondor and Rohan. Another has some mixed pieces of a womans dressing set. Combs, brushes, mirrors and other odds and ends.

The elves bring back the stray and of course there is still the one at the camp. So 14 prisoners in all.

Please ask questions, let's keep this moving.

I'm relaying a question from a PM:
Gil-Gandel asks Haro, "Okay. Do any of the letters found on the prisoners match any mails the dwarves know of?"

Haro, "Yes, some of those were meant for Aglarond."

Gil-Gandel to the party, "I imagine interfering with the mails under King Elessar's protection is pretty darn serious."

Elendil's Heir
09-25-2008, 08:27 PM
It is indeed. The items found certainly strongly suggest their guilt of theft, assault and possibly murder.

Sir Thoroncir, deeply suspicious by now, will continue to question them, but one at a time, and separated from the others, if other members of our party will be so kind as to guard the others. He will ask each:

"What is your name?"

"Where, exactly, are you from?"

"Have you ever been convicted of any breach of the King's peace?

"Why, in this land where brigands are known to be at large, would you be out camping at night?"

"Why would our scouts overhear some of your men say our party is 'too large,' and then find you hurriedly leaving?"

"Why did we catch one of your men actually spying on us from concealment?"

"Why do you have mail that does not belong to you?"

"What crimes, if any, have others in your party committed?" (This will take advantage of the "Prisoner's Dilemma," and give each an incentive to point fingers at each other to possibly later receive leniency).

Thoroncir will take notes with his writing kit, and describe each man specifically enough that he can later be identified, or at least distinguished from the others if we bring the entire group to Tharbad in custody. If Gondor brands felons, he will check for any such marks.

I suggest the crowd of prisoners be guarded so that our party is out of human earshot, and a keen-eared Elf listen in, just in case they begin to whisper to one another; they might say something incriminating.

This is where being a former prosecutor comes in handy in an RPG....

Thoroncir’s questioning reveals conflicting stories and many excuses. Everything from they found it on the road to they were attacked by 4 angry dwarves and when they successfully overcame them they of course kept what they were carrying. One offered up that they came upon the scene of a horrific assault. A dragon must have killed some other travelers and they of course just took what was no longer needed after burying the dead.

One of them claims, “I just joined this group a few days ago and our leader was planning an ambush if your party looked weak enough. I am deeply sorry and I have not done anything yet. I guess I would have helped, at least I think I would have helped. If I did not they would have hunted me down and killed me instead. I’m sorry.” He was not evil.
Of course all of them have clean records and never did anything wrong and help old ladies weed their gardens.
Another prisoner that seems smarter than normal but was evil, “We have been trying to keep ourselves fed and we have been preying on small parties for months now. I was once caught in Minas Tirith years ago trying to pick someone’s pocket. I learned my lesson but fell on very hard times. For us peasants without land, we often have no choice but banditry or foot soldier and foot soldier usually means death.”
This might have been convincing if you did not know that Gondor has the best medical care of any army and that for those not willing to serve, there is almost limitless job opportunities in construction projects and land to be had as homesteaders in Gondor, Arnor, near Tharbad and along the Anduin vale.
The Hobbits & Gil-Gandel over hear the leader instructing some of the men. “Don’t say anything about the dwarves or the families or we’re all for the block.”

The men look at Gwaelur very fearfully, the regretful one cries out, “But, I ain’t done nuthing, I were jist hugry and fell in wid bad men.”

Gilraen, “We are not far from the beacon of Erelas, we could bring the prisoners there to await King’s justices, though it might prove a burden on them instead. If enough turn separate evidence I believe we can have Gwaelur execute the leaders and worst offenders. This is going to be a long night. If we can spare someone, perhaps we can get a little help.”

Deor looks over the mail and realizes that 2 letters were addressed to his own Uncle the horse dealer.

That's what I was kinda thinking. Even without some of the incriminating answers, the physical evidence would certainly be enough for probable cause to arrest them, even if we were applying 21st C. legal standards. We can't just let them go.

Thoroncir will separately interrogate, again, the leader who warned the others about possible execution, and will follow up on what he said about the Dwarves and the families, with Gwaelur looking leerily at him.

He will help escort them back to our camp, bind them there, and stand watch at a distance from them. He asks Miron or Gil-Gandel to continue to listen in if the prisoners whisper among themselves.

In consultation with the Princess, Gil-Gandel and Ghan, he drafts the following note for delivery by bird:

To the Steward of Gondor.

My lord:

I have the honor to inform you that we have captured 14 men under circumstances strongly suggesting that they are highwaymen and brigands, and have placed them under arrest. We have extensive notes of their interrogation, incriminating statements by some, and evidence including an unusual quantity of purses, bloodstained items, and intercepted letters of the Royal Post. Some of the prisoners may be prepared to cooperate, and I am not convinced that all are equally culpable. We will hold them on the main road between Minas Tirith and Tharbad [x] miles north of the White City until we can transfer custody to soldiers you send, that they may be taken before a judge of the King's Bench for trial. I ask that your men make haste, as we would prefer to press on to Tharbad, and Rivendell beyond.

I had emailed a map of Gondor and Mordor at one point. If you can find it, look in Anórien. There is a beacon (Erelas) shown in the mountain to the NW of the second O in Gondor. The beacon is only about 7 miles from where you are. That would take less than 20 minutes for Gilraen or Gil-Gandel.

Brownie has no reasonable way to find the Beacon and communicate that he has a message and the Hawks have no reasonable way to deliver a message to anyone in Minas Tirith. I don't think bird messengers are going to work. You have an Elf with a very fast horse and a Half-Elf with a very fast horse. You can either send word back to the city or to the beacon. The beacon is not very far at all.

If anyone needs the map, Email me and I will send it again. In fact now I have added a scale.

A nearby brigand grabs for the dwarf having slipped his bounds. The dwarf smashes down with his mallet and then a second time. He then hits the screams in the head. A crunching noise is heard. He says, "Anyone else act up and I will kill all of you without waiting for the King's men."

A sudden and probable fatal violence leaves the camp awake and very disturbed.

The Dwarf in question is Tumin. Gil-Gandel is no expert, but he would suspect two things. Tumin is both very young and looks shaken. It might be the first blood he spilled.

The prisoners look bad. The one that screamed is unconscious and bleeding a bit about the scalp. He is breathing but a bit raspy. The other that attacked Tumin is not breathing.

... stand down the dwarf in question: "You have done your duty, and it is not fair that more blood should be on your hands for now, should the prisoners be slow learners." And have water brought for the prisoners as it is starting to get light.

Ghân realises he may becoming more 'hard-hearted' (perhaps savvy or even streetwise is a better term).
He firmly reassures the dwarf Tumin that the suspected bandits were being well-treated, should not have tried to escape and that caravanners have full rights to defend themselves.
Tumin did not act out of cruelty or greed, as robbers do.

Ghân will reload his spells, assuring the party that helping the Beacon-Warden is time well-spent.
As Woses say, 'even a small amount of sewing at the right moment can help make sure that much less repair is needed at a later time'.
Realising that the party know a snappier version, Ghân ponders if the Woses have picked up a habit from the wonderful Ents....

I favour handing the brigands over to the local authority, explaining that the dead prisoner was not merely trying to escape but actively attacking his guard - had he merely slipped his bonds and fled, we could surely have found a non-lethal way to stop him. I pity him, for he was a fool to think he could escape from us when I, for one, could certainly outrun him, but the dwarf Tumin did to him only what he had to do.

The Beacon-Warden is the same one that Gil-Gandel spoke to earlier, so no need to fear. If you’re worried the beacon itself was compromised, Gilraen exchanges several words with him in Westron, Rohirric and even Sindarin.

Gilraen, "He is either who he says he is or a far cleverer rogue than I can see through."

The Warden is very professional and does not appear upset that one prisoner died in an act of violence and uprising. The other 15 are all stout local farmers that are aging veterans of many battles. They are but lightly armored but have excellent swords and spears. There is much free land for homesteaders to repopulate Anórien, especially near the minor authority of the beacons.

They will hold the prisoners for a short time while word is sent back to Minas Tirith. The Warden greatly appreciates the service done for Anórien & Gondor. He is a man that appears to be in his early 30s. Probably Dúnedain stock and he has a pronounced limp. He is wearing well made chain mail and carries a quality crossbow and excellent Long sword.

So with a slight delay the party can set off on July 6th. It is another very hot day and again the party finds shade for the hottest portion of the day as they travel until dark. The day and night are peaceful. Occasional travelers are passed with short greetings.

July 7th the party just makes it to the Eastern edge of Firien wood. The night again passes without problem.

July 8th, has occasional light rains and one 15 minute downpour. By 10am the party reaches the bridge over the Merino Stream and the Village of Merino Bridge. We are probably no more than another 3 to 4 days from Edoras. The Village is small but has a wooden palisade protecting the village on both sides of the great stone bridge. The bridge has a 20’ square stone tower on each end and the palisades have large wooden gates. The houses in the village are mostly stone walled with wooden roofs. The population appears to be of both Gondorian and Rohirrim stock. They have a horse seller, a fish market and most of the small shops that a traveler might need along the road. The village is clean and the dirt streets appear to be cleaned of dropping and watered down to cut down of dust. There is a large stone building at the East gate that has a small company of 30 guards of Gondor stationed at it. They are 10 horse, 10 bow and 10 heavy infantry. Their captain is in charge of guarding the village, bridge and keeping order in Firien Wood and supporting the Halifirien Beacon-Warden who commands another 15 guards. The village has an elected Mayor who is in charge of all other functions of the town. He lives on the west side in a very nice two story stone house.

An elected mayor - interesting! A little bit of democracy in Middle-earth.

Sir Thoroncir pays his respects to the mayor and the captain of the garrison, if there's time. He will also replenish his supply of paper and ink from the shops. He earlier gave his interrogation notes (after transcribing copies) to the Beacon-Warden, and explained that he was willing to testify, if necessary, at the alleged brigands' trial. He will re-mail the letters which the brigands wrongly intercepted, and will also mail a short letter to his parents in Linhir.

So the party moves on after a nice lunch and a few hours rest. As the group rides into Rohan, they start seeing more fields and houses and side roads and paths. That night the party can actually stay in a large Inn with good stabling.

July 9th-11th: The travel is easy with inns and taverns along the way.

On the 11th the party reaches the path to Deor's Uncle by 10am. Here is a good place to rest a bit and Deor would like to pay visit to some of his extended family. It will be but another two hours to Edoras or 20 minutes to his family's place.

His Uncle has a large place with many stables. He acts primarily as a dealer for a sort of collective and has an excellent reputation.

Of course all the very best horses go to the companies of the Éoherë. These days the Éoherë has 100 companies of a full 120 riders each and there is the ability to raise a large number of reserve companies with older riders.

He might be able to get a cavalry horse or two for Deor and his friends however. These are great horses. Nearly as fast as a Light War and as strong and powerful as a Heavy War. The are very expensive however. They start at 500 gold with tack.

Thoroncir looks to Gilraen and sees no wish to hide, “Allow me to introduce the lovely Princess Gilraen, daughter of King Elessar and Queen Arwen.”

Aldor drops bows, “I am most honored and that my nephews should be travelling with the like of this party and the fair folk themselves speaks volumes to me. How has he acquitted himself in your service?”

Gilraen, “Please, I am but a second daughter and a humble healer of Estë, Deor has done quite well in service to the realm of Gondor but not at my service, I have rather been honored to serve with him and his friends. Your other nephew is leading a cavalry group for Gondor currently in a small war near Ered Lithui.”

Firstly he checks with Gil-Gandel and the rest of the party if there can be a journey delay of a day or two (after all, there is a caravan to consider).

If that's acceptable, he explains to Aldor that he could use the following mixture of spells (starting tomorrow):

1st level (7)

- Locate Animals (to find Marmots)
- Invisibility to Animals (works by touch - the recipient(s) can then easily capture unsuspecting marmots on the surface)
- Entangle (to capture marmots on the surface)
- Speak with Animals (to reassure marmots they are not being culled, merely moved)

2nd level (6)

- Charm Mammal (to persuade marmots to co-operate)

3rd level (3)

- Hold Animal (to capture up to 4 marmots at a time)
- Pyrotechnics (to send smoke down marmot burrows and force them out)

After pausing long enough to let the joke sink in he shrugs, amending "I'm afraid I simply couldn't bring myself to do such a thing without need, especially to such cute critters. Besides, at least in my case, I know very little about local politics, and you never know what will cause lingering resentment to erupt into outright war. Sure, they're cute, fuzzy, and annoying right now, but could you imagine how dangerous a militant population of Marmots could be if they took it in their minds to begin sapping buildings?"

"Well, I hope that you informed those adorable little creatures realized that I was being sarcastic," the elf comments, his warily neutral posture making it difficult to intuit whether or not he gets the joke. "Speaking of adorable," he continues lamely, his tone suddenly cheery and perky, "Did I ever tell you how much I like plants? Gosh, I'll even bet that I can make the entire alphabet just with the plants we can see from where we're standing. Let's start with everything beginning with "A"..."

As disturbing as hearing a bright, cheery voice emerge from Miron's cloak and hood is, the odd, frantic gestures he appears to be trying to make with his hands make the elf look downright demented. Had the ranger actually been proficient in a gesture-based language, he would have wasted no time in saying "I don't think they're on to us. While I keep them busy listening to plant stories, might I suggest that you arrange yourself behind their burrow in such a way as to enable an appropriately lethal form of preemptive action, should the Marmots attempt to kill us before we can warn the others of their plans?"

However, since he does not in fact speak any gesture-based language, Miron's attempt at covert communication resolves into a long and deranged sequence in which the elf alternates between making frantically improvised, utterly incomprehensible sequences of signs and performing increasingly disturbing pantomimes of incredibly violent acts, all directed at an invisible foe located at shin height.

Considering the ranger's reticent nature, it's likely that at least some of his companions aren't completely convinced that the elf is joking until he ends his performance by interrupting his own alphabetized botanical litany, interjecting "Thank goodness these things did not see fit to colonize the area around Helm's Deep, for I fear the battle could've turned in the enemy's favor, had Mordor enlisted their aid."

With a shrug, he straightens up and dusts himself off, blandly commenting "In any event, I don't think we should worry too much about the local rodent population."

The Sea-Knight cares little for the marmot issue, but is all in favor of dropping in on King Eomer. He would also like to meet the heir apparent, if that is possible.

This is the Ref deliberately ignoring the marmots except to say please check the setup thread for updates, there are 4 posts here that should not have happened at all. I am ignoring it all. Talk to the human and even the horses if you must, not the marmots. The marmots are all hiding and have heard nothing said and they don't like Ghân much and think Miron smells like a hawk. My apologies to Glee and Omi no Kami, but I don't want to waste any effort on large Marmot populations and no one would seriously want to hold up a day or two for them.

Meanwhile, we still need RogueRacer to check in with Elfstan for a Pony.

In response to Gil-Gandel, Gilraen & Lorliana both would also like to visit King and Gilraen adds, “I was expecting to stop at Edoras, I hope that is in the plans, Aglarond also.

The horses thank Thoroncir for the kind words and mention that Aldor himself has fair ability to make himself understood and to understand us and that a few others occasionally are nearly as well versed as you. All the horses respond to the offer for treats by neighing out “APPLES!”.

Mulligan knows that Master Holdwine and her Uncle Pippin came south at King Éomer's request. The pair plan to visit again in a few months. Mulligan had already promised to stop by again the next time she headed north.

Over lunch Lorliana arranges for an excellent riding horse, better than her current mount. She is quite pleased and has spare tack. She plans to split her time between the pair in our journey.

Sorry for the delay in posting just when you needed a response from me. :smack:

"Greetings Master Aldor! I'm not related to Master Brandybuck, but my grandfather, Samwise Gamgee, was part of his fellowship in the time of the war."

After answering any other questions Aldor may have on relationships and who traveled where and with whom, Elfstan continues, "I find myself in need of a sturdy pony such as the one you sold to Master Brandybuck. Do you have any available?"

Elfstan also hopes that Ghan will help him check over the ponies and to become acquainted with the one selected.

Putting such weighty matters as marmot welfare to one side for the moment, I would like to see if it's possible to pay a social call on King Eomer when we are passing. If he's not long for this world it would be a shame to pass up on my last chance to meet him, and I am sure he would like to hear how Master Holdwine*, Lord Gimli, and some other old acquaintances are getting on.

* That is, Merry Brandybuck by his Rohirric name

I think you are probably right, elf. If the king is dying we should do what we can to meet him.

Aldor, "The heir to the squire of the Ring Bearer. He who helped most to destroy the Dark Lord?! I would be honored to help you find an excellent pony."

He thinks for a short time, eyes you up for size and weight and calls for an assistant. "Get me Stibba, Ludmin and Flower."

Back to Elfstan, "I have three ponies in mind for you, lets see if they like you. Stibba is a good pony, fit for long travel. I can let you have him and his tack for only 40 gold. Ludmin is a grand little mountain pony worthy of a Dwarven warrior but perhaps a bit undersized. He will do well in combat and is very strong. I can let you have him for 100 gold. Finally is Flower, she is among my finest ponies. Lord Gimli himself rides on one of her siblings. She is trained for war and to fight on her own. She is extremely bright and sure footed for plains, sands or rocky slopes. I will throw in fine chain barding for her and her tack. I can let you have her for only 420 gold. She is the fastest Pony I have ever had. She can nearly keep up with a Light War Horse and is made of sterner stuff."

All three ponies approve of Elfstan. Ghân sees all three are wonderful and happy ponies.

"Elfstan, Uncle Aldor doesn't overstate the qualities of his horses, and certainly never to friends. I've got only 20 gold on me, but it's yours if it'll make the difference in buying a better pony.

Uncle Aldor, we ran across some brigands on our way here and took some captured letters off of them, two of which were addressed to you. I had them in a pocket here... somewhere... Ah! Here, these are yours."

Flower? For a "war pony". :D

"My thanks for your help, Master Aldor! Flower is indeed a magnificent animal. Regrettably, I'm not sure that I have the means to afford her. I do have my own tack (referring to emails between me and Jim when it was discovered that Elfstan did have a pony) if that can help with the price?"

Sir Thoroncir quietly offers to give Elfstan some gold if he can't afford the pony of his dreams.

The Sea-Knight also takes Aldor aside when there's a spare moment, and asks his permission to feed some apples to the horses he just met (and can he suggest where apples are available nearby, to pick or buy?). He asks Aldor to keep his Horse-speaking skills secret.

Uncle Aldor to Deor, "Thank you so much nephew. These are probably more orders and ones I hope I can fill.

Now having a Princess speak for you and your brother is quite excellent, but what can you show us humble farmers of your arcane skill?"

The tack is of little value compared to the rest, but in trade as Flower will want to keep her own, Aldor would be happy to knock 15 off.

Thoroncir can afford to loan you the gold, but he will probably need it by Rivendell. A few others might be able to help. Were you looking at Flower?

Aldor to Thoroncir, "Well Sir, a short distance down the road to the East is a farmers market where you could get apples cheaply enough. You are welcome to give them an apple apiece but no more. They can be a bit greedy when it comes to sweets and it does them no good in the long run."

The tack is of little value compared to the rest, but in trade as Flower will want to keep her own, Aldor would be happy to knock 15 off.So that's 405gp for Flower. Elfstan has 150gp in coin, plus another 8gp from the sale of his old mount. Add to that four 50gp trade gems, so he's sitting at 358gp. Although I'm hesitant to seek a loan from any of you, it looks like 60gp would cover the mount plus give Elfstan a little spending money (13gp) for incidentals (like pints!) on the trip. That would give him a mount that can keep up with the party in most situations and that can fight.

On the flip side, Elfstan won't be able to pay it back until we once again divide up loot.

I have everything from a very good Light War to a full out cavalry horse suitable for a mounted knight with a heavy lance that moves as swiftly as a light war."

Gilraen accepts in taking the walk. For a few silvers you bring back plenty of nice apples for the horses you talked to and the horses in the party and troop.

RogueRacer, I think Thoroncir and Gil-Gandel can well afford to take a chance on you for 30 gold apiece. They made the offer, take it. :)

I'll do some reading (uses Palm to pick his uncle's pocket with his right hand) after lunch and Levitate us up over the fields, and we'll enjoy the view." Flower is a most exception Pony. She is very swift; especially with only a small Hobbit and not an armored Dwarf on her. She is a solid brown color with a small white flower like shape on her head between her ears. Her movement is 21" and with the chain and her speed she is AC: 0/F. She will attack for 1-3/2-5/2-5. She is 4 years old and of a long lived line. She is very smart and knows dozens of commands already. The chain mail is well made and from Aglarond.

Ghân: Thank you. I only need one horse, so would like to trade in my old one. I would like a speedy mount for me (willow jerkin armour) that is not scared by combat (it doesn't have to fight - but it could be useful if it could defend itself).
I already have a wolf + dog as companions, so the horse would need to cope with them.

Gilraen to Ghân, "I will purchase Scout from you so we have another spare mount. What did you pay for him? i will gladly match that."

Aldor, "I have a few well trained fast horses that are not quite strong enough for metal barding and armored knights but have still trained to defend and flee at the right times and not in panic. Let me bring 3 of them up. The range in price to a friend of Deor's from 20 to 120 gold. Hadrine is a young fleet horse but nothing special.

Oldrine is a tough horse and good fighter that needs a good friend like you. You'll find that he fights well as long as his load is light. He is 7 years old. You can have him for only 50 gold.

Finally Palafax is a very swift but small horse. He is just the right size for you, a lesser descendent of Shadowfax himself. He is suitable for an excellent young rider, an elf or in this case a light Wose. He is faster than your Scout but not so fast as the Elven Horses. I can let you have him for only 120 gold. He is not much use in a fight, but can outrun most dangers and keep his head about him as he is doing it. He is already 10 but should have a very long life. His father is nearly 50.”

Elfstan looks for a spare apple for Flower. When everything is finished with the transactions, he would like to talk to Aldor about the commands that Flower answers to.

Later, he will see if Ghan (or possibly Thoroncir) will help him communicate with Flower. He would like her to know that he is honored to have her as a mount and that his mother, Elanor, is named for a flower. He will promise to make introductions when possible.

Palafax likes the idea of visiting Rivendell, that you are a Druid and can speak to him in his own tounge. He does not mind your canine friends and seems happy with Ghân as his rider.

 Scout was gifted to you by the Queen. We might want to back up a hair and replay this a bit. Perhaps we can just say you offered Scout to Gilraen and when you insisted she offered to at least pay 40 gold to help get Palafax.

Palafax is a 2+3 HD Horse Movement is 27" AC 2/N Attacks: 1-4/1-4 but usually will not. As mentioned he is 10 and he is too smart for Animal Friendship spell but is friendly and can learn some new tricks as if you had Animal Friendship on him.

DM, thanks for reminding me! (It's a big help not to have to scroll through loads of posts...)

Ghân would not dream of taking money for Scout. He is honoured to present the horse to Gilraen.
(He would not want to insult the Royal Family by giving their gift to just anyone, but Gilraen seems very appropriate.)

Ghân will happily pay for Palafax, as he is getting just what he wanted (speed, acceptance of inexperienced rider + gruff friends, happy to adventure and can defend)
He spends his spare time getting riding lessons (e.g. from Gil-Gandel or Aldor).

P.S. Does Palafax wear barding? If not, presumably a Barkskin will work.

Gilraen does not appear willing to take no for an answer on paying Aldor 40 of the gold. Please accept it with good grace. She seems to feel very strongly that it is the right thing to do. Many are here that can keep giving you riding lessons. Even Thoroncir is a much better rider than he lets on with his talk. He has charged off a beach galley, lance lowered into battle against the Corsairs of Umbar after all. Deor is oddly enough the only one who probably cannot help you.

Palafax has no barding and Barkskin will work very well.

Uncle Aldor was absolutely amazed by the levitated view of his farm and the hands are all amazed.

So with lunch and business completed the party heads closer to Edoras with the next stop at Deor's Mother's house where his oldest brother manages the family farm. As Dwarves ride on to Edoras as they have some business to attend to and feel that few rides could be safer. The rest of the party will probably stay only a short time and then ride on to Edoras to get there by the evening at the latest. Deor might understandably stay the night at his old home.

Deor runs into his house and hugs his mother, sweeping her off her feet and around in a circle as he hugs her. He is in turn nearly swept off his feet by the rush of brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews crowding around him. After the first crush of siblings retreats, his eldest brother Leod presses in, shaking his hand and slapping his back. Deor pulls the silks and spices out of his pack for his mother and makes a present of it, then settles into a chair (the good one by the fire that he never got as a child, it being reserved for guests and elders!) and begins to catch up on the happenings of Edoras while he's been gone.

Despite the wonder, most of the family are just proud of the youngest son and actual wizard. If anything they seem to find his companions to reflect all the more on his importance.

Does the party ride on to Edoras and does Deor plan to meet them in the morning or that night.
