At one point during the debate last night Palin shouted out to her Dad and (maybe) some other members of her family. At the same time smiling and winking at the camera. It made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

McCain to pour one out for his dead homies.
I thought that she did OK when she was staying on-topic and discussing the issues. But yeah, when she showed any personality, egads, she came off like a cartoonish version of Jean Lundegaard. Kinda weird lookin', ya know, in a sorta general way.

I'm sure the quote will be up on youtube shortly. She gave a Shout-out to a few people and a third grade class who is getting extra credit for watching the debate.

Actually, if she had pulled this AS V.P. I would have thought it entertaining. As a candidate in a serious debate that has been consistently run down for her lack of experience and decorum it struck me as: "Og help us all if this woman gets into office." I'm no hater, I think that she and McCain are absolutely NOT what this country needs right now, and I have logical arguments to back my position. This kind of folksy crap though is beneath her as she showed some chops in that debate. So it's either a transparent ploy, or she really IS that much of a nimrod.
Which is it?

Nope. I loathe with reason, not on principal. Nor am I jealous.
hater
A person whose jealousy of another person success or achievements makes them verbally nit-pick any flaws no matter how small or just make up flaws in order to somehow try and belittle the successful person.
The term is more often than not used improperly to title a person who simply does not like something or someone because it’s not what they are into.

To echo the sentiment expressed upthread, quite frankly, I want the people at the highest level of government to be smarter than I am. I'm never going to have dinner with Biden or Obama, most likely, but I will be seriously affected by how good they are at doing their jobs. I don't care how personable they are. what basis are you saying that Obama, Biden, McCain, or Palin is competent then?
Obama: Constitutional Law professor, skilled speaker, good plan for America.
Biden: Decades of experience, solid performance in the debate.
McCain: Decades of experience, whiny stupid old man performance in debate, "He just doesn't get it." Chose to stupidly grandstand and suspend his campaign so he could seem like a leader. Also, terrible jet pilot.
Palin: Cutthroat bitch beauty queen creationist who fears witches and ignores every debate question with pre-memorized bullshit and behaves like a pathetic schoolmarm caricature so she can get the mindless sheep "family values" voters.

It is a problem. Someone who believes in creationism has a vested interest in appointing supreme court justices who are amenable to it. I've said it before, a president Palin (which could happen if McCain gets within ten feet of the controls for Air Force One) would just have to get five likely supreme court candidates who are willing to be evasive about their evangelical bend and she'll get one two or three in over the course of her term (I believe three of them will be over the average lifespan by that time).
If that happens say goodbye to abortion rights and say hello to moments of prayer in school, intelligent design in science class, and the ten commandments (the christian version of course) on the walls of every public building.
She's a mental midget. Creationists are ignorant and delusional, all of them. Every single one. They don't belong setting policy.

It never bugged me more than several years ago, when I was talkin' to a guy who did that even with words not endin' with a present participle. "Chicago is the home to the Chrystler Buildin'." *Shudder*
Is it a midwest thin'?

Yeah, but as a combination senator/VP, just think of the possibilities!!

So, if she becomes President, which I highly doubt, Creationism will rule the land and supplant all accumulated knowledge? Just like Obama has stated he doesn't think same sex marriage is equal to het marriage. So gays will be outlawed? Come on idiot.. Think before posting next time.

Not particularly. I am prone to occasionally saying y'all, but would make it a point to not do so in a formal setting like a debate. Of course you have never heard me speak and are referring to generalities where my issues with Palin are in direct reference to her speech quirks.
But then also, I am not running to be Vice President and if I were I would ensure that my speech patterns were as polished as possible.

I'm not sure either. To me Palin seems like she'd fit right in to the cast of Fargo, but as I understand it, the accents in that movie were far from accurate. I was under the impression that Chicagoans talk a bit like that, though.

On topic, slipping a conservative in could very well happen. They just have to find five of them. Five evangelical lawyers and judges willing to be evasive on the conformation block. Do you think the American public is going to sit still for five vote-downs? The democrats would look like they were partisan and "playing politics". So no they can't very well shoot down five nominees in this climate. So please, just because you can't imagine how it would happen doesn't mean it can't, it means you have a weak imagination.

Maybe I'm not following you here, but it seems the masses were salivating at the thought of a Palin gaffe-filled show of horrors. It didn't happen.
This morning all we got is "She made a shout out" and "She is trying to be too folksy." Lean pickin's on "enough meat-covered bones over the course of the 90 minutes to fill us for awhile."
It just smacks of desperation to find SOMETHING to keep the waters chummed for the sharks* here.
*Ok.. last of the animal metaphors, I promise.
It's easy to miss particular posts around here; but I do believe I've posted more than just about her folksiness. I didn't like the fact she wanted to expand the VP's role--in fact, I believe I rhetorically asked if she wanted to change the title from Vice President to Co-President. Not funny, perhaps, but more than just, OMG! Look at her glasses! And she gave a shout-out to a third grade class and gave them extra credit!
I think she did better last night than in the Couric interviews, but let's face it: that's not saying much. After all, she's been at this, what? Five weeks? And it's obvious she's a Washington outsider. Maybe if she talks to us more often without being filtered by the media, then we can get to know her, and like her like we're supposed to.
In the meantime, we work with what we've got, and the McCain camp has kept her away from the tough questions, and it's obvious why.

It bothered me when she ignored the questions, and does she not know what an achiles heel is or just not pay attention? It bothered me when she talked about all the things terrorists hate about our country because those are all the things she and her party would like to deprive us of. I thought her concept of more flexibility in the vp role was abhorent. But since we're also talking about some of the little annoying things, I'm surprised no one else has mentioned her hair in her eyes - holy crap, I couldn't concentrate on what she was saying for the first 20 min or so I was so distracted. It's like talking to someone with spinach in their teeth. And 'Nucular' god help us all. I looked up the term "glad hander" and wasn't surprised to find disingenuous politician in the definition. Way too chirpy Sarah.
Oh, I don't think this is horribly important but when Biden had his emotional moment, mentioning if his son 'was gonna make it', well, his son deployed to Iraq today so I'd judge it legitimate.

The "Achilles heel" response really stuck out at me too at first. I was listening to it on the radio in the car, so I didn't have any visual cues to help me figure out if she had been whooshed, or if she really did just launch herself into a list of her strengths without even acknowledging that the moderator had asked for a self-assessment of her biggest weakness, or what.
Biden pretty much listed a list of strengths too, but at least acknowledged the actual question. I was kinda hoping he'd really nail that opportunity to give a thoughtful and complete answer in counterpoint to Palin, but emphasizing weaknesses in oneself is not what many politicians want to spend much time on, I suppose.
Listening on the radio, I had no idea about the winking and such until I got home, and learning about it certainly decreased her points in my book.

Perhaps where you come from not pissing or shitting yourself is aiming high? Probably your parents' fault, however. Next life you can maybe be a Govenor. Or maybe not...
Actually it was a reference to how low a bar I had set for Miss Wasilla's debut.
I guess she isn't the only one in need of a low bar setting. By the way, what's a Govenor?
It bothered me when she ignored the questions, and does she not know what an achiles heel is or just not pay attention?
I think she knows what an Achille's heel is, but she struck me as someone who won't admit to any faults. That's what cost John Silber the MA gubanatorial election in 1990. But unlike Silber, Palin didn't respond like a petulant child.
The hair bothered me too. Though I don't like her much, I think that she's a very attractive woman. But dayum, she needs to stop seeing Donald Trump's hairdresser.

Similarly, when asked what might have to be cut back in their platforms due to recent developements, didn't she basically say that everything would continue forward pretty much the same? No matter which party affiliation (or independently) I'm beholden to, I'd prefer my choice in leadership to be able to reconsider positions and admit fault. I realize that in general their probably not very big on that, but in light of the past 8 years with Bush, I feel this is critical.
Over all though, I think she did well enough. The folksiness in general didn't bother me (and I thought the shout out was kind of cute, if out of place), but I can certainly see why it would be considered inappropriate for the station she's aspiring to and how other head's of state would perceive such. I wish there'd have been less focus on soundbites and more content, but I'm assuming if one has to cram so much knowledge in within a short amount of time, that's the best you can hope for. She did come across as assertive and confident, as well as able to hold the viewer's attention. At least in my humble opinion.
I thought Biden came across as well-versed and personable, although not being completely familiar with him, I was concerned that his emotional choke-up would be indeed seen as a ploy. Overall, I don't think either made a mess or handed up any gaffes so to speak, but if we're going on sticking closer to actual content and specifically answering the questions (as much as politicians are able), then I'd give the edge to Biden because truly, expectations were so low for Palin that any decent performance translates well, and I'd hope that the public would put a bit of a higher premium on end result rather than personality.
I do want my leaders to be more intelligent than I am. Also, I'd like for them to have a competent, commanding presence that will be taken seriously within the context of the job they'll perform. I don't mind some (or even a lot) of down-home qualities being in attendance, as long as the others take precedence.
