View Full Version : Sean Connery/Alex Trebek

Saturday Night Liove does a recurring and hilarious sketch parody-ing Celebrity Jeopardy. Invariably, a grouchy Sean Connery lauches succesive attacks upon a defenseless Alex Trebek.
Is this just something that they made up and that subsequently took on a life of its own, or is this carrying forward some true-to-life conflict that unfolded before the eyes of Celebrity Jeopardy viewers that I missed?

I have no idea but my favorite was when one category was "S-words" and Connery kept saying "Swords Alex!"

"I'll take 'the rapists' for $400, Alex."
"That's 'therapists', you idiot!"

"I'll take titties for $100."
"That's TITLES."
"Not a fan of the ladies, are ye, Trebek?"

"What is the sound a dog makes? We'll accept 'bow-wow'... or 'ruff'... yes, Sean Connery?"
"MOOOOOOO!"
"That's not the sound a dog makes."
"That's the sound your mother made last night, Trebek!"

Isn't this the wrong forum?
Anyways....um...I gotta watch SNL more.
Oh, no wait-someone asked a question. Never mind.

"So, let's see your Final Jeopardy question, Mr. Connery... 'Buck'. I guess that must be your wager. And your question?... 'Futter'. Hmmm, 'Buck Futter'. I don't get it."
"Oh, I think ya do, Trebek. BUCK FUTTER!"
And yes, I also LOVE these.

Darryl Hammond is the next Phil Hartman, he is so versatile. I think I like his Al Gore even more than Sean Connery.
Anyway, I always wondered where this skit originated and am anxious to hear if there really is tension between Trebek and Connery.

"Celebrity Jeopardy!" has been an SNL favourite for years, and it hasn't always had Sean Connery.
In the first ever episode, Trebek handled a panel of Burt Reynolds as played by Norm MacDonald, Marlon Brando as played by somebody else, and somebody else. Alex's final desperate attempt to get somebody to correctly answer a question was when the question value slid back to reveal a bright red screen and the question was "What colour is this?" Nobody got it, of course.
They use the Sean Connery gag a lot just because it's funny.

AT: "Let's just go to Animal Sounds for $600. This is the sound a doggy makes. Mr. Connery."
SC: "Moo."
AT: "No."
SC: "Well that's the sound your mother made last night."
(B. Reynolds rings in and says "Who is, um, Scooby Doo (etc.)")
(French Stuart rings in and says "Who is John Caferty and the Beaver Brown Band, thank you very much.")
AT: "No! Good Lord! We would have accepted 'Bow-wow' or 'Ruff'"
SC: "Oh, rough, just the way your mother likes it, Trebek."
also, my favorite (Connery, H. Swank, and Keanu Reeves):
Alex whines about Regis for a sec, then says:
"...Sean Connery has set a new Jeopardy record for futility with..."
Sean: "Suck on it, Trebek. Suck it long, and suck it hard."
Alex: "That's beautiful. You kiss your mother with that mouth."
Sean: "No, but I did something to your mother with this mouth."
(one of the topics was "Things Trebek Sucks")
------------
Finally, to address the OP, I can't recall Connery ever being on the real Celebrity Jeopardy, but I'd pay money to see him on the SNL version.

I've heard somewhere that Sean Connery offended Alex Trebek on a live show.

Does anyone know if they have a movie of the "best of Celebrity Jeparody?" Or are some of the sketches on the 25th anaversery tapes? I love this sooo much. Probably my fav. is with Keenu Reeves:
KR:"I'd like balloons for $600"
AT:"That's not a catagory."
KR:"My mistake, I would like balloons for $400"
KR: "I know kung-fu"
This stuff is classic, you can get some of them off napster too!

My fav. wasn't with Sean Connery, but with Burt Reynolds/John Travolta.
Reynolds: I'll take the dog one
Trebek: Ok...words the rhyme with dog, for 600. It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping, like a this...
(Beep)
Trebek: Burt Reynolds.
Reynolds: ...Chinese whore.
Trebek: No!
(Beep)
Trebek: John Travolta.
Travolta: Chinese whore doesn't rhyme with dog...?
Trebek: That's why it was a wrong answer!
Anyways, I heard about S.C. getting into it with Alex somewhere too, but I cant remember why. Sorry...

ROTF...
::Hooo...::
I am gonna get fired, you have me rollin here. My favorite one was the 'French Stewart' 'Burt Reynolds' (and S.C. of course. Final Jeopardy. The Answer: A number (any number, just name a number off...) S.C.'s 'question': "V" Which is a Roman Numeral of course, so it scrolls down to reveal his wager... "Suck it Trebek" (the 'V' being the top part of the 'K' in 'Suck')

I liked the one where Ben Stiller is playing Tom Cruise and some other guy is imitating Adam Sandler (and, of course, Sean is there). They both did dead on impressions!

Hrmm..
So how many times has S.C. been on celebrity Jeopardy? Three? I can remember the French Stewart, Burt Reynolds (Turd Furgeson), and S.C.; and the one with Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler and S.C.
Have there been others with S.C.?

I remember one with Sean Connery, Burt Reynolds and Jerry Lewis.
I laughed out loud at the one with David Duchovney as the host of the show, Sean wanted "The Rapists" AKA "therapists" each time. " I am the cock of the walk, Alex"

Dave Duchovny wasn't hosting, he was playing Jeff Goldblum as a contestant.

I remember one where someone was playing Calista Flockhart who was too tired to write anything for Final Jeopardy!
These are my favorite skits on SNL in the last X years. I also loved that one that I think involved Nicholas Cage where he was a husband trying with his wife to think of a name for their child. Husband keeps rejecting names as being too easy to make fun of. At the end of the skit, a mailman delivers a package to "Mr. Ass wipe" Husband says, thats "Ahhs wee pay". Does anyone know if the text of this skit is on the web somewhere?

Norm Mcdonalds impression of Burt Reynolds cracks me up, I must say.
But another venue that was absolutely hilarious was Star Wars try outs. Norm Mcdonald as Burt Reynolds as Darth Vader; he can't get into character and asks "What kinda car does this guy drive."

Not to hijack this TOO far off topic, but I loved the Nicholas Cage / "Asswipe" one!
Mom: "How about something simple, like 'Ben'?
Nicholas Cage: "Oh, yeah, Ben, Benjamin Harrison; 'Hey Ben, is MONTANA A STATE YET?'
And does anyone remember the SCTV skit for a game show called "High-Q"? It's been a few years, but I remember that one as pretty hilarious. Some hazily remembered lines (correct me if I'm wrong):
"Love to love you baby?"
"But that's what I SAID"

Trebek: "months beginning with 'Feb'"
Connery: "Feb-TOBER!"

So how many times has S.C. been on celebrity Jeopardy?
Six, as near as I can figure. I haven't heard the Jerry Lewis one, but I'll take curwin's word for it.
The other five:
Connery, Calista Flockhart, Nicholas Cage
Connery, Keanu Reeves, Hillary Swank
Connery, Minnie Driver, Jeff Goldblum
Connery, Turd Ferguson, French Stuart
Connery, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler
Mucho thanks go out to cykrider for pointing out that these are available on Napster. I'd have never thought to look there. Damn, these clips have me in tears laughing!

This OP was a good idea...I'm kinda curious myself. Is there really some life-based truth to the hilarity portrayed in these skits? I love the Celebrity Jeopardy skits! The only one I've actually seen is the one where "Burt Reynolds" is wearing the big cowboy hat. But I've heard all the skits from Napster.
AT: Keanu Reeves, you look rather pleased. Let's see what you wrote down... Nothing. The question was write anything, and you got it wrong. I'm speechless. Let's see what you wagered. Eleventy-billion dollars. That's not even a real number.
KR: Yet.
AT: Simply amazing...

Stiller's Tom Cruise was great. "Help me help you. Help me help you."
The Calista Flockhart was where she couldn't participate in final jeopardy because the pen was 'too heavy'.

In terms of the guests' general dumbness, you betcha. The celebrities who compete on Jeopardy! are... well, not up to usual Jeopardy! standards. The questions are significantly dumbed down and they STILL do horribly. Regular Jeopardy! guests are usually pretty smart, but the celebrities are generally brutal.
A few years ago, General H. Norman Schwartzkopf was a guest on Celebrity Jeopardy! and I think he won about fifty zillion dollars. Okay, it was more like $25,000. Still, it illustrated what would happen if you put a legitimately smart and educated man up against a couple of sitcom stars. Oh, it was ugly; I think Stormin' Norman answered about 55 out of 60 questions.
TREBEK (Will Ferrell): Let's see what Mr. Keaton came up with. You wrote... "Val Kilmer Sucks!"
KEATON (Matthew Perry): I'm Batman!
TREBEK: Okay, and your wager... "George Clooney Sucks."
