In this commercial (http://www.funnyplace.org/stream.php?id=9661) the joke is that people are trash-talking to Manning but he never notices it. The final shot shows him drawing a number one to some unseen person off-camera. Was the punchline supposed to be that the unseen person was flipping him off or is that just my imagination?

Since the whole commercial is based on the idea that EVERYBODY hates Peyton but he's too dense to realize it, yes, I share your interpretation.

Somebody extended the middle finger, and the too-cheerful Manning interpreted that as meaning "You're Number One, Peyton."

Do people hate him in real life, too? I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but the commercials he's in just amuse the heck out of me. Wasn't he in some a while back where he went around acting like a huge fan of everyday workers...like wearing a big foam #1 hand and cheering on the guy stocking the shelves at the grocer's, etc?

I don't think Peyton has ever done anything truly awful to make himself truly despicable, but yes- there ARE lots of people who either loathe him for his wholesome image, or who regard him as a Golden Boy who's overly praised in the media, or who are just sick to death of seeing him on TV (I can't think of any athlete who's done more commercials the last few years).

Pat Boone once acknowledged, "I've been extremely popular, but there's just something about me that seems to make some people want to throw up." Peyton Manning could say almost the exact same thing, and he knows it. The commercial simply takes advantage of that fact.

Right. In each scene, he's in a hotel in the city of a rival team.

If his feelings were truly hurt by their trash talking, I'm sure he just rubbed some dirt on them when the takes ended.

I'm torn on Peyton Manning. I mean, on the one hand, ohmygod give me 2 hours in a room alone with that MAAAN! On the other hand, he is, like a lot of NFL players, a conservative Republican type person. Ew. On the OTHER hand, he seems like he has no problem making fun of himself, which again, makes me like him.

It's confusing...

What really irks me about Manning is what I call those 'house cleaning duties' or 're-arranging of the furniture' he seems to perform every time he gets behind the center before the snap. It can take what seems like forever and what frustrates me is that he rarely if ever gets caught for a time count violation:mad:

Oddly enough, in those instances when there are a few minutes left on the clock and they're trailing by a touchdown or so, the house magically appears to be clean enough for the ball to be snapped in a matter of a few seconds.

I LOVE his Mastercard commercials, though

And I have to admit that he is a more than decent quarterback:D

That's how we interpreted it too. We had a heck of a time figuring out what the guy who delivered the fruit basket was saying. "Choke on this!"

I think that the commercial is charming enough, Manning is a good enough actor to pull it off and make it funny the first time you see it through the first time you figure out what the fruit basket guy is saying, but the thing that really sucks is that they feel compelled to run that commercial 9000 times a Sunday. I keep hoping for a version where a sniper takes him out on the balcony before he can go take his little hike.

I just recently learned that my dad very strongly dislikes Peyton Manning because he's still bitter about the Colts leaving Baltimore way back when. Funny how I didn't know that until just about a month ago. I always thought he at least admired his skill.

I never interpreted the last scene on the balcony as Peyton's response to being flipped the bird. I actually barely even noticed it at all, and was wondering if it had been edited out of the versions I'd seen.

I think it would have been funnier (and less ambiguous) if at the end, it had Peyton on the balcony yelling down something like "No, YOU'RE number one!"

Actually, the way he probably feels (the way I feel), is that he's sick hearing about how Peyton has just "broken this team record held by Johnny U" or "passed that milestone from the Baltimore Colts". 95% of people in Baltimore have a firm distinction in their mind, nay, their worldview, between the Baltimore Colts and the Indianapolis Irsays who unfortunately have co-opted our good name and heritage. Manning, as good a QB as he is (and I like the guy), hasen't ever broken ANY of Johnny's franchise records, because that franchise ceased to exist in 1984. Period.

I use to not be able to stand Peyton Manning, though I really had no reason for that. However, ever since he created one of my all time favorite SNL skits, United Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZpPf-q2_es)*, he is okay in my book. His commercials are good too; De-Caf!

*I hope that is the right link, I can't actually play youtube vids at work and can never seem to get Hulu to work anymore, anywhere.

Manning's in that Sony HDTV ad too -- the one with the chicken mascot and the guy who says he doesn't like sports. That was funny, the first time.
