View Full Version : For Christ's Sake: It's Spelled BARACK. BARACK, with a C!

RickJay

How many times now have I seen it on the SDMB spelled "Barak"?

I know people make typos, but it's a repeated error, made by a lot of people. It's now in a damn thread title. The guy is going to be the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES in seven days. His name has been in the paper, on the internet, on news tickers every hour, multiple times an hour, for over a year. It's not even that hard to spell; six letters, nothing unusual-looking to an English-speaking person.

For fuck's sake. How hard is it to spell "Barack"?

Obama is so far above average he doesn't even have a "C" in his name! How awesome is that? :D

Hi, Neighbor!
01-13-2009, 12:38 PM
But the "C" is silent! Why can't I just spell it how it sounds?! Buhrok. Now that's more like it.

Yeah, I can get behind that. In a perfect world, we should know how to spell the name of any of our presidents.......at least the misspelling of "Barak" is a lot closer to being right than "Shrub" for Bush.

But... But... once he makes the national language Arabic, will it make a difference?

At this point I would like to thank the next President for my four day weekend upcoming. I'd also like to give a hearty "screw you" to opposing counsel for removing my four day weekend.

But he's had to keep it a secret because he knows an Irishman could never get elected POTUS (we're still grieving and swapping conspiracy theories over what happened to the last one, too many bad memories). (And yeah, I know -- but nobody noticed "Reagan" is an Irish name until he made a state visit to the Auld Sod*.)

Remember the Cecil (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/787/does-the-taller-candidate-always-win-the-election) column where someone came up with the theory that our Presidents' first names go common--uncommon--common--uncommon?

Except for the recent George--Bill--George exception (maybe the middle name should have been "Hilary"), the theory is still correct. "Bill" might defeat George, but "John" didn't have a chance next to "Barack."

Yes, but I know someone who didn't vote for him because he "didn't really know who he was"

After he was elected my grandmother, who still harbors some racial sentiments said something to the effect of "I don't know anything about him!" with an obvious negative undertone.

My grandfather, who does not harbor the same sentiments called her on this, "How much do you know about George Bush?". She said "Well, I know he is the son of another president." That's all she could come up with.

This is on par with people who can't even properly spell their own name.

For example, you don't use a capital letter in the middle of a name that is only one word.

Well that's what happens when the stress is on the second syllable. Perhaps you'd prefer OH-b'ma.

I'll be honest here. I thought it was "Barrack". Neither way looks right to me though.

No etymological connection between the two names, BTW. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_(given_name)) "Barack" has its roots in "Baruch," not "Barak."

"Barak" Teddy Bear...unbefuckinglievable!What? I don't get it. There are people who name their kids "Barak," after all. Why shouldn't those kids deserve teddy bears too? Especially since the poor bastards are now doomed to have their own names misspelled for the rest of their miserable lives, thanks to stinkin' Barack Obama. For pity's sake, let them have the bear at least.

See, you can order many different names (http://www.cafepress.com/mynameclub) on that bear! Or indeed, on a variety of products through the magic of CafePress. Personally I like the generic examples. Especially the one that reads "I Have a (Heart)-On For Someone." That's nice and disturbingly vague isn't it?

Unfortunately it seems that the selection is not totally customizable, so you can not order "I Have a (Heart)-On For Mohammed's Ass."

I have no explanation for that one other choice, "Someone's Nemesis," which clearly appears to be printed as "Someone's Nemsis." So perhaps my argument is fallacious after all, and they really were trying to spell "Barack" to begin with.

Mahmoud's Ass.

In the meantime don't get huffy. People with silly names deserve to have them misspelled.

Or, more likely, in about 7 years the names "Barack" and "Barak" along with a couple of other misspellings nobody here has thought of will be the commonest names in first grade, and everyone will be misspelling everybody else's version.

I've floated that idea before. The Mods won't consider it -- they want the banned to be anonymous lest there be competition for getting added to the list. Same reason their threads go down the memory hole.
