...
Others think Bush should do something truly spectacular:
Like taking pity on Gore and just conceding the whole thing. Bush could quit like a man, having proved his point.
A surprise Bush concession, coming after Gore's gracious concession speech Wednesday night, would send many pundits into sober reflection. They would soberly reflect about Bush's deep abiding love of his country and of his political party--that special kind of Republican, moderate enough to remove his offending spine before taking office...

They would soberly reflect that Bush must be stoned off of his mind to concede the presidency at this point.

George, did you read that article? If so, is your monitor obscured by anything that might filter sarcasm and irony from ever reaching your eyes? For us sarcasm-unimpaired people, quotes such as:
Still others think it would be appropriate for Bush to whip himself with a cat-o'-nine tails, while publicly denouncing himself for leading a conspiracy to "steal" the election. What a piteous scene of inspiration, like "Braveheart" in its majesty.
As he flagellates, in between shrieks of righteous pain, Bush could also denounce family retainer and former Secretary of State James Baker.
are a dead giveaway that the author is using sarcasm. I offer my services if you need lessons on the identification of sarcasm, and tips on how to interpret it.

Gadarene, might I suggest you sign up for the lessons offered by waterj2?
Clearly the post from xenophon41 is sarcasm, making a play on the whole concept that the prior post discusses.
(Thinking some members get way too wrapped up in this...)

I'm sure Dubya already has experience at being stoned off of his mind...

Wow...xenophon was using sarcasm?? Boy, thanks for pointing that out to me, DSYoung! I can't believe I didn't pick up on that when I made that incredibly thickheaded post!
Oh, wait. My post was a joke, too. Carry on. :)
(I can't tell who's being serious in this thread anymore!)

Sarcasm - a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain.
Satire - a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn.
Irony - the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning.
Above definitions based on those found at http://www.m-w.com .
xenophon41's utterance, "Oh [i]suuure[i] you do" is pretty clearly an ironic utterance. As sarcasm goes, it was pretty obvious.
I did consider that the statement of Gadarene[//b] might be an attempt at sarcasm, but since it fails to meet the definition, I discounted that, and took it at face value.
The second post from [b]Gadarene is, I hope, intended as sarcasm; it clearly seems to meet the definition.

And, of course, Robert Bruce Thompson's (http://www.ttgnet.com/rbt/daynotes/2000/20001211.html) take on why he found Gore's concession disappointing.

*sigh* To clear things up...
My first post was intended as self-aware irony--also known as playing the fool. Thought the more experienced Dopers 'round here would give me the benefit of the doubt and understand that I couldn't possibly be that stupid.
Guess I was wrong, DSYoung. :D
