iPod nano 3rd gen/ iTunes impasse

While clearing a large number of songs off my friend's iPod nano, and putting lots more on, at some point I got myself into a situation where iTunes (%*#$%!!) will not uninstall, reinstall, repair, or update.

Does anyone know what to do?
