View Full Version : Movies you watch over and over and over again.

Actually inspired by this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=521778), and also inspired by the movie I watched last night. For me it's 2 main movies, Airplane! and Stranger Than Fiction.
I love Airplane cuz I think it is the funniest movie ever, but more recently I just can't get enough of "Stranger". I can watch it over and over again (and continually do) and I love it every time.
So what is your "over and over" again movie?

Oh God Where art Thou
Is that the one starring John Turturro and George Burns? :p
Mine are Sharky's Machine, To Live and Die in L.A., Sleepy Hollow, and about half a dozen Hammer Horror films.
On edit: Just to say that I'm with the OP. I loved Stranger Than Fiction. Give Will Ferrell a script that doesn't read like it was written by slow-tracked seventh graders in detention, and the man can fucking act! Why doesn't he do more of these kinds of movies?

I'm not much of a repeat movie watcher, but my favorite never get tired of movie is Dr. Strangelove. Jesus Christ, there is not a bit of that movie that's not pitch perfect.
On the other hand, I like almost every Will Ferrell movie 'cause I'm a 12 year old at heart.

All movies fall into this category for me. Probably the most viewed would be Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers, Me, Myself and Irene, Bully, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Alpha Dog. I've watched the first two probably about sixty times each, the third probably fifty times, the fourth probably around fifty times, and the last two probably thirty times each. Fargo and The Forty Year Old Virgin are runners up for probably 25 times each, though the latter might be closer to 40, it's hard for me to remember.

Operation Petticoat
Mister Roberts

Dead Man
Night Of The Living Dead

Something I just not realized in this thread....
There are a crapload of people who simply adore Stranger Than Fiction. I seriously thought I was the only one who liked this movie as much as I do. I know others who have seen it, but I never knew so many people liked the thing as much as I.

It's a Wonderful Life - Is that one so obvious that nobody felt the need to list it?
The Princess Bride. - The second most perfect example.
Stranger Than Fiction. I really don't know why because I could do without Will Ferrell. That movie just works somehow.
Aliens
Zulu
So many more, a lot of them list by others. There are a lot of movies I never think aobut until I walk into the room and they are on TV. I can sit down in the middle and just go from there.

Atomic Mama

I second "The Man Who Would Be King." Another great soundtrack :-)
The ones that I get out at least once a year:
Reality Bites [months go by and then I think, it's time for Reality Bites again]
Love Actually [at Christmas]
Something New [months go by and then I think, it's time for Something New again]
The one I'll watch any time I can rope someone new into experiencing it:
Gallipoli
The ones that I watch whenever they come on TV, and I get roped in:
Sweet Home Alabama
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Pretty Woman
cactus waltz
06-22-2009, 03:43 PM
Blues Brothers
Mean Girls
My Neighbor Totoro
Shaun of the dead

I should also put down some others that I watch a lot that I don't actually like that much:
Against All Odds
Sphere
I've gotten into the habit of studying in front of the TV set, and I need something to serve as white noise in the background to concentrate. Against All Odds and Sphere are fairly brainless thrillers that don't engage me that much, and I managed to get them dirt cheap, so when I have a lot to get through, I plug them into the DVD player and just concentrate on what I'm studying. When one's over, I take a study break, and then I just plug the other one in.
Of course, I don't really wind up watching them that much, so these might not count.

Pride and Prejudice the Colin Firth version and the Keira Knightley version, I have watched probably around 75 times. It is a very good movie to knit too.
Ocean's 11 and 13 12 was crap. Another very good listening too film. At least 50 times. Each.
Snatch. Pulls me in every time. at least 5 times a year.
Harry Potter all of them. I get in a mood and just watch them in order. Can't wait for 6. Lost count of how often I've watched them.

Ok, let's put a small twist on this thread (and by "small twist" I mean "my actual intention).
Name just ONE movie that you watch over and over. As backround noise, cuz it's your favorite, whatever one you watch the most and never ever get tired of it.
Mine is the afore (and aplenty) mentioned "Stranger Than Fiction"

I cannot have a movie as background noise, as I find I must devote my fullest attention to it always. We treat watching a movie at home like it was going to the cinema. Lights out, phones off. But if I did have one on much of the time, it would be Casablanca.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - loved it since I was a kid, can practically quote the whole thing now.
Jurassic Park. Just the first one, though.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Manitou - cheesy bad horror movie from the 70s, but I love it.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Dogma
Silence of the Lambs
The Sixth Sense
The Langoliers - Stephen King TV movie from the 80s.

For background noise I either turn on the sci-fi channel or something random from my tivo, because that's easier and lazier than popping in a DVD. I probably watch Serenity the most for just pure enjoying it as a favorite and a great film. Galaxy Quest and Star Trek First Contact are my more 'randomly filling up time with movies that aren't super favorites but are extremely rewatchable" or for watching with friends.
As a kid, my most rewatched movies were the typical family films that were 'events' on network TV - Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I can't really do movies as background noise either. But the movies I watch over and over again are:
Barton Fink - I simply cannot get over how awesome the dialog in this movie is. "I'll show you the life of the mind!!!"
Millers Crossing
Burn After Reading - I'll stop with The Coen Brothers here, seeing as I could list almost all their movies.
Stranger than Fiction - I'm with Sir T-Cups on this one, I thought I was alone in liking this movie as much as I did. Also, I mentioned it to a girl I'm dating and she said she hated it. WTF? And she generally has good taste in movies.

And she generally has good taste in movies. It suffers from the same problem The Truman Show did: a goofy comedic actor in a sometimes-amusing-but-overall-serious role. Folks expect a certain style from the actor, get thrown off, and get annoyed about it.
I really like the suggestions for 're-listenable movies'. I need aural stimulation at work to keep my productivity up, and I've taken to playing Netflix movies in the background. Their Watch Instantly list gets longer by the day, and they've gotten some great movies in there. I'm always looking for new suggestions of movies I've seen before (stuff that's new is too tempting to watch; listening is fine, but watching kills productivity hard).

Hot Fuzz.
Unless I've got a new movie to watch or new CDs to import, Disc 1 of the 3 disc special edition stays in my computer's disc drive. I start the movie before I go to bed; the next night I start it from the last point I remember seeing. If you like Session 9, I'd suggest you check out this site (http://www.opacity.us)--it's a truly amazing urban exploration site that includes an extensive photoshoot of the real abandoned Danvers Hospital, where the movie was filmed. I found out about the movie through the site and had to watch it just to see more of the place. Creepy.
Awesome link; thanks! I've read quite a bit about Danvers but those photos are spectacular. The oddest part is seeing the apartments they've turned it into. I'd love to see it in person but I would not want to live there:eek:

Shane
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn)
The Adventures of Don Juan (Errol Flynn)
Zulu
The Black Stallion
Alice In Wonderland (Walt Disney)
If I chance across one of these while I am flicking through the TV channels, I have to stop and watch it to the end.

I personally watch Kung Fu Hustle, Monsters Inc., and Spirited Away to an obsessive degree.
The Princess Bride should probably be in there as well (and for my folks it is Blazing Saddles). :)
