Did 'Blond Lebanese' Hashish really come from Lebanon?

Did 'Thai sticks' really come from Thailand. Was 'Acapulco Gold' really from Acapulco? Did 'Panama Red' really originate in Panama?

(Any one else have some other famous names of pot or hashish?)

I always thought that the pot coming to California was all from Mexico (yes, I know Acapulco is in Mexico) and that the fancy names were used to jack up prices.

I'd imagine that much, if not most, of the pot consumed in California is grown there, as the northern counties are premier growing areas. Between the inferior potency of Mexican pot, and the increased border security since 9/11, even Mexican suppliers are finding it more profitable to grow in the US. Back in the '60s and '70s, though, it may have been as you say.

As for Thai stick and the classic strains, the most that can be said is that they were produced in the named areas at the time they got named. There first? Who knows? It's certainly reasonable to speculate that the famous names did get used to market inferior products to the unwary -- hell, they do that with Rolexes.

I remember smoking some distinct tasting dope in Massachusetts in the early '70s that the dealer said was from Michocan. I smoked some weed in the UK later that same year and commented that it tasted like the Michocan. The people I was smoking with looked at me in amazement and said that's what it was.

So, not sure, but there was at least some consistency on the 'labeling'.

FWIW, in P.J. O'Rourke's Holidays in Hell, he mentions passing by huge marijuana fields in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon which he says is the source for the famous hash described in the OP.

There's a term I've not heard for a long time. But yes, Thai stick did originally come from Thailand. Specifically, as I recall, the Northeast, although maybe the North. See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_sticks).

In the UK it was known as Lebanese Gold in the 60s and definitely originated from the Lebanese area. (I used to know a guy who imported it). The other great favourite was Moroccan Black, also definitely from Morocco with most bricks bearing a palm tree stamp.

The one I suspect was a misnomer from that period was Tibetan Black, but wherever it was from that was some strong shit. Reportedly mixed with opium.

To answer the OP, I would say that it's just as likely those African violets at Home Depot were shipped in from Africa.

As indicated by some previous posts, some of the naming conventions amount to nothing but random branding; but other names like Northern Lights, White Rhino, Jack Herer and yes, Acapulco Gold are actual strains maintained and crossbred by serious cultivators.

Given the added expense of transport and additional risk of customs, there's little financial incentive to smuggle in pot from overseas for something that can be grown locally for a small investment in hardware. The names may or may not be indicative of the foreign origins of the specific cultivars, but regardless, the actual bud that you burn in your bowl is most likely grown in your backyard (not literally, but bear with me for the sake of alliteration).
