Ahoy,

Just wondering, after all the random bitchings last night, do i count as a folk hero yet?

Just some poor bastard who wandered in and got caught up in the wild, fast paced world of Message Board politics... madness, simply madness.

(Incidentally, not trying to get a "rise" out of anyone, just wondering... )

Upham, 2 questions.

1) Why do you think you may be a folk hero?
2) Why is this in the Pit?

I didnt have any real reason, it's just goot to check

And i figured if i put it anywhere else it wouldn't really fit, you know? well maybe MPSIMS... but i've alredy got one in there and it's not right to fill up the board, right?

Anyway, just thought i'd ask

I think you usually have to die first before you can be considered a folk hero. So check back in after you check out and we'll get back to you.

Probably not. What is your defination of a folk hero?

Yep MPSIMS is the only place I could figure that this might fit.

i've alredy got one in there and it's not right to fill up the board, right?

I'm not aware of any straightdope rule that limits numbers of posts. Just the number you can submit at anyone time to prevent flooding of the boards.

Actually the boards are kinda slow the last couple of days.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, it took Jesus 33 years to get on a cross, you're not going to make it in one day.

Keep trying though...

Look, boy wonder, call us when can shoot an apple off of Arnold Winklereid's head at 100 paces, lay a mile of railroad tracks in a day, and leap tall Alphagenes in a single bound.

I don't think I understand. What's true? ( The fact that this belongs in IMHO or MPSIMS?)
And why is it like the Edmond Fitzgerald? ( You mean this thread is going down like the Edmond Fitzgerald?)
And why is it nuff a that? ( Enuff of what? Enuff talk about this thread?)

Can you be more specific?

I was referring to the post that pointed out to be a folk hero one usually must be dead. I don’t wanna be dead.

It's like "the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" a folk song by Gordon Lightfoot (not only do i not want to be dead, i really don’t want to be dead under a half mile of icy water)

And yes, i don’t really think this thread needs to go on too much longer, i've pretty well gotten my answer.

Just as a note, you guys REALLY take your accidental spelling errors seriously, don’t you?

Do you count as a folk hero? NO.

Do people get anal about spelling errors? Some do, some could care less.

Sorry, Upham, you don't get to be a folk hero around here just by bitching randomly. In order to attain folk hero status at the SDMB, the bitching must be focussed, intense, hot and heavy. Before you get to put "Straight Dope Message Board Folk Hero" in your sig line, you must piss off not merely some of the people some of the time, nor yet some of the people all of the time. No, Grasshopper, you must piss off all of the people all of the time, and you must make them mad enough to crawl into the modem and come after you with a virtual chainsaw.

I think you need to work on it, frankly.

Duck Duck Goose

And then, of course, once you've been working on your bitching technique for a while, there comes a day when it finally happens. You manage to piss off all the people all the time, and posters are coming after you in droves, armed with virtual chain saws, flick knives, tear gas, bricks and paving stones, Raid, anything they can lay their hands on. You will then be teetering on the brink of true Folk Hero status.

But there is one more step you must take, Grasshopper. There is much wisdom in Finagle's words. You must die first. This will not be difficult, nor particularly painful. What usually happens is that during your final sprint for the Folk Hero finish line, you will behave like a complete Jerk and the mods will pull your plug. The eldritch rune "BANNED" will go up, next to your user name. Then you will be truly dead, and your name will be spoken of with reverence and awe. "Remember Upham?" the senior posters will tell each other around the cracker barrel, while the wide-eyed newbies listen. "Ah, now, there was a real pain in the ass."

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE!

You people haven't realized Upham's valiant fight against um, people!

He has posted revelations like... actually, this is the first thread I have read by him.

In closing, if you want to know why you are free from The Man, you can thank Upham!

I'm thinkin no.

Maybe i'm not cut out for this folk hero biz...

I mean, for starters i'm Canadian, i hate being mean. Now grnated, i am young and self rigteous, which does, indeed, allow me to piss off some of the people, some of the time... but as far as the more hard core stuff goes...

That and i really, really don't want to die.

Oh well, maybe when i'm a dirty, nasty old bastard i'll have a better shot.

True, but don't discount dangling sentences lack of capitolization and mispelled words. Sooner or later that's bound to piss everyone off.

Also, to be consisered a folk hero here, you should have a post immortalized on the Page O' Flames at Fathom.org.

And it's the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Upham, you seem like a nice enough guy - kinda odd sense of humor, but likeable and easy to get along with. But honey, you're trying to move just a little too fast.

WallyM7 is a true folk hero here at the SDMB (and yes, Wally has passed on to that great Message Board in the sky - Hiya, Wally!) Set aside several hours of reading time, make sure your bladder is empty (don't want to piss your pants) and do a search for Wally, both his posts and as the subject. Well worth it, IMO - and may well prevent you from innocently making a fatal faux pas at some time.

There are several others that, IMO, hover on the fringes of folk-heroism, but they ain't dead yet so I won't swell their heads by posting names. They can read about their elevated status after they kick the bucket.

The answer... for me at least, is now yes.

Mockingbird

Maybe he's going for a Billy Jack vibe.

You know... he beats up a few cops for being corrupt, goes out to hide in the desert, and that's when he has his vision quest.

A truly poignant moment will be Upham's vision quest. He will see Zsa Zsa Gabor who will tell him about slapping the police in Beverly Hills. Next he will talk to Timothy Leary about nothing, and yet he will feel laden with insight. Then he will recieve the gift of proper spelling and grammar which he shall bring to the SDMB.

After the posters he has brought his newfound gift of grammar and spelling have ripped him into little pieces, he will finally get his Folk Hero status, and will have a theme song which all shall sing.

*clears throat*

"There once was a man called Upham,
at least we think he was a man.
And he came to us with a few words,
and looked like a can of Spam.

We listened and we looked,
while his brain simmered and cooked.
We listened to his many plans,
and never gave a damn.

With a ha ha ha and a ho ho ho,
we read his many missives.
We wondered when he'd stop typing,
which would have been to all our liking.

There once was a man called Upham,
but now he is no more.
He left the world as he entered it,
as a giant crashing bore."

Granted, i hate the song, but it's a damn sight more then my Brother has, and that's really what counts in this life.

Getting better stuff then my brother.
