View Full Version : What other classic novels need zombification?

Thinkgeek.com has a book called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (I tried to link to it, but I'm on my daughter's netbook, and it's not letting me click the hyperlink icon). Here's the deal: it's the entire word-for-word Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice, but at supposedly appropriate places, Zombie Action Bloodbath Scenes (tm) have been added.

When I saw this, I thought it was incredibly amusing, but it got me wondering: what other classic (or maybe not-so-classic) novels would benefit from being Zombified? What say the Dopers?

Fun with Dick and Jane's Brains!

See the Zombie.

See Jane scream.

See Jane run.

Run, Jane, run!

Trip, Jane, trip!

"Wuthering Heights" might go well with a few zombies wandering grimly about the moors.

Funny, the book I am re-reading just now is Pride and Prejudice. You know, just a gentle bedtime read. Well it WAS but NOW I'm going to be imagining where the zombies are!

Huh, thanks a bunch, Norinew :D

The author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is actually doing a follow-up: Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.

I thought the next project was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. An authentic biography with Honest Abe killing bloodsuckers in his spare time.

If you stop to think about it, pretty much any work of literature can be improved with the addition of zombies.

Huckleberry Finn -- As Huck and Tom travel down the Mississippi they run into the King and the Duke, a couple of small-time con artists. How much better would that section have been if they had been brain-eating zombies?

War and Peace -- Pierre Bezukhov is socially awkward and illegitimate. Wouldn't his struggles be even more poignant if he were undead?

Romeo and Juliet -- Since both characters die at the end, wouldn't it have been more exciting if they then reanimated and took revenge on their families?

1984 -- Oceania was always at war with Zombies.

Canterbury Tales -- toss a Zombie into the mix of pilgrims and watch how a light-hearted contest to see who can tell the best story turns into a tale of suspense to see who gets eaten next!

Shogun - All of Ishido's forces could be zombies (maybe then I could read the rest of the books)

To Kill a Mockingbird - Boo Radley: Zombie (I'm sorry)

Ender's Game - The zombie gate is down

I Walked with a Zombie, a lifetime topten classic, is loosely based on Jane Eyre.

I have never read Pride and Prejudice, but I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

I would be VERY surprised if it is as described, because so much of the little things point to the characters being in a Zombie Uprising that it's not like scenes of Zombie mayhem were added.... unless Lizzy was sharpening sabers during the 2nd ball?

Hey, Mrs Cake, I actually had a nightmare about that once!

We could have Crime and Punishment and Zombies where the child molesters and ax murderers are replaced by the undead.

The Scarlet Letter... instead of being a guilty adulteress, she's a ravenous zombie looking to take revenge on the Puritan community that banished her... and eat the brains of the secretly zombie minister...

I think it would end up being a MUCH different play, but I just love the possible title Much Ado about Zombies.

I'm thinking a zombie traipsing randomly through Great Expectations would be great. Oh, wait. I forgot about Miss Havisham.

Haha, in a way I suppose she was. :D She was then being a bit snarky with Mr. Darcy, 'cos at that point she believed Wickham's story that he was a bad guy really. So, metaphorically sharpening sabres, yes! Hey, this Zombie version sounds quite well put together. Might have to look out for this one.

All the "Gone With The Wind" ideas sound fun too.

How about "MacBeth"? What with the witches and Banquo's ghost, it might as well have a couple of zombies.

Practically any play could be improved by adding zombies. A Midsummer Night's Zombie, Ten Little Zombies, Guys and Dolls and Zombies, You're A Good Zombie Charlie Brown, Oh Dad Oh Dad Zombies Ate Your Brains And I Feel So Sad, The Effects of Zombies on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, [title of show with zombies], Six Zombies in Search of an Author...

And if anyone from Disney is reading this- instead of ripping off Romeo and Juliet again, might I suggest Zombie High School Musical?

On the Road would lend itself pretty well to a zombie apocalypse scenario. Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, two rebels against square, button-down society (and undead brain-eaters) take to the open roads of America, to discover the totality of existence...and fend off hordes of rampaging mindless flesh-eaters.

The best part is that it has discussion questions at the end.

I'm going to take my revenge on some high school literature-

Ethan Frome- forced into a loveless marriage, Ethan and his girlfriend Mattie commit suicide via sled. To his dismay, Ethan doesn't stay dead, living up to his nickname of "Old Stiff".

Our Town- Emily dies in childbirth, and climbs out of the grave to reexperience the life she had let go by. Funnily enough, she doesn't remember the whole "brains" thing having been so important.

Hamlet- Hamlet's dad comes lurching back to Elsinore, with the urgent message that, 'Braaaaiiiiins your uncle killed me braaaiiins braaains avenge me braaiiiins eat YOUR BRAIN!"

The Scarlet Letter- Her husband lost at sea, Hester thinks it's safe to start an affair with the shy Rev. Dimmsdale. But, supprise! Hubby is back, and jealous.

The Crucible- the town of Salem is undergoing an epidemic of zombism! Can Reverend Paris find the voodoo witch before the whole town is eaten?

Beowolf- You barely have to make any changes to this one. Grendel=zombie. Grendel's mom=zombie. Dragon=zombie.

Not Without My Zombie 1991, Two stars, Sally Field and Alfred Molina. Rated PG for mild peril and frequent language.
