Oh those zany Japanese!

Seriously though, they're going to make these available to the public? How long do you think it would take a very desperate Japanese (or nationality) man to jury-rig (sp?) a vagina into that thing?

Or do they mean it's going to "open sourced" that will allow people to write code and programs for it so the makers can show off new things once in a while or what?

EDIT:

I didn't find it all that attractive. The walk isn't quite right yet.

You're not desperate enough then. ;)

Bolding mine of course.

Ditto. It walks like the human characters in World of Warcraft, its knees permanently bent.

It will be interesting if designers would want a robot model. In a sense its ideal since they can build clothes for a specific shape, which is handy. The proportions on the robots don't even need to be realistic, either.

Of course, there's also a loss of humanity, so artistic types might not like that. (Then again, artistic types don't always like to share the light.) But certainly someone will try the robot as a catwalk model, if only for the headlines.

It's funny because it's true and not that hard for me to imagine actually happening. You guys just wait and see.

Dude, the Japanese teenage girl is not going to become obsolete any time soon. Not in the Western world at least. They may never ever get with Japanese men in the future, but there is a whole subculture of Western males that will happily take in any Japanese teen girls not feeling loved.

But certainly someone will try the robot as a catwalk model, if only for the headlines.

It won't be for the headlines. Any clothes these things actually model will be aimed at the guys that self-install a vagina into these robots. To give them a humanly look and all.

Why do robots always walk like they're constipated?Because its centre of gravity isn't in quite the right place for it to balance without an askew arrangement of limbs.

I suspect that most catwalk models are living pretty check-to-check. It's like actors, everyone wants to be one, so none of them get paid anything until they're in the top 99.99th percentile of the profession. (Then they can actually make quite a lot, of course.)

That's not very nice. There's no need to say such hurtful things just because she is a robot.

Will this make the the girl's used underwear vending machines (http://www.photomann.com/japan/machines/) obsolete. I wonder if these undies have a not fresh if used by date.

I have to say if they think those robots are good enough to sell fashion clothes they need to get out of the office a bit more.

This is why the Japanese aren't likely to take over the world. They spend inappropriately.

The least useful function for a robot is as a fashion model. Fashion is sold through saucy expressions and graceful movements. Neither of which is likely to be among the first thousand or so human traits that anthropomorphic robots acquire.

Hmmm...

They should have put some knuckles in her fingers, cause it looks like she is perpetually ready to deliver a knife-hand karate strike.

Also, she couldn't even give me a reach-around. What good is a super model who can't even give a hand job.

On the plus side, with further devlopment they are well on their way to blow job capability.

Naw, I'm serious guys! Imagine a legion of these things carrying your groceries home from the store for you--they're so damn slow they'd take forever to cross the street. The automatons are so creepy, everywhere you'd turn, something would be slowly step. . . step. . .stepping to find you. And just when you turned your back, four of 'em would gang up on you and turn you into the next "Janet Leigh in the shower". Og help you if they grab you--you can't break free, because they're strong, and they're made of metal.

As for jury-rigging... I'm guessing you're not familiar with Realdolls? Those plus that robot is a match made in... well... certain fervid imaginations. (And no, I'm not linking them -- google at your own risk -- not even slightly SFW).

And when they make a Realdoll Droid with interactive AI that simulates a Japanese Highschool Girl, uniform included, then the nerd/geek gene will be doomed to get bred out of the population ;):D:p (Heck, in Japan one of their local makers of the equivalent of Realdolls already makes "Schoolgirl" models)

Actually, Nunzio, the way I see it is that if humanoid robots will be driven towards lifelike movements, it will not be for the sake of lifelike droids itself, but as a collateral result of progress in the development of lifelike prosthetics for people who lose limbs or parts of their faces and can't get transplants. Once you have THAT (lifelike motion mechanics) with interactive AI (to provide a "personality") AND a sturdy, low-maintenance RealDoll, someone will combine them. (And really, if someone can make the Realdoll reasonably animated, it'll make a bundle. Right now one thing working against Realdolls is that many people get an uncomfortable necrophilic vibe from them.) Just don't hook up with the one that looks like a punk Darryl Hannah

I can imagine there would be a great interest in lifelike humanoid androids for use as models, lovedroids, and undercover decoys (both for the law and for the outlaws). Just about any other function one can think of being given to droids can be achieved sooner and more economically by the robot being just a box of electronics with manipulator arms and a means of locomotion.

And don't knock Tripler -- he has to think of these things because he may be the one calling in the airstrikes on the Machines if it comes to it. This gives him yet another threat scenario to worry about... ;)

The first one of these that can carry a 800 pound human around will be a huge selling point. Every major hospital will require at least one. They can go to the house after the fire department cuts out the wall and carry the person to the hospital directly to the special patient room next to the morgue.

I disagree: A robot would have to have some super-kickass medical training to know which position to carry a human. Do you really want the FemBot to sling you over it's shoulder, and carry you while it's upright? You'd be up in the smoke of the fire, and be dead of inhalation before you made it out of the house. What if the CyberDyne Systems Model 101 tries to lift you off the ground after you've had a spinal injury? ::C4 snap:: I mentioned before their slow speed--can you even imagine the pedestrian traffic headaches with just a couple hundred of these things floating around a major city? They just don't move as fast as humans, and would really be more a pain in the arse.

On the level, as much as I bemoan them, they're more a novelty right now, and frankly, I can't see any use in the next twenty years. Now granted, I send a "robot" downrange at work, but that's directly controlled by me--I make the decisions, I tell the machine where to go, what to shoot, and I control it's return. It's not an automaton. Controlled machines do have their places, 'specially in industry. I do give the Japanese kudos for fielding a plaything (hey, it demonstrates new technology and gives people new ideas!). But these . . . they're just freaky weird.

. . . and JRDelirious, you and I know darn well the mad scientist controlling the legions of these things wouldn't make it so easy on us. We'd have to get in close and pick them off one by one.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the video was that all they need to do to sell the damn things is to straighten their knees a bit so they can walk like actual people and dress them in Playboy bunny suits or sailor dresses, and they'll make a fortune. The specific one in the video wouldn't look half bad in a Haruhi Suzumiya costume, I think.

I assume the smilies are there because this is all superfluous. You don't need expensive RealDolls to breed out the SuperGeekNerds. That makes as much sense as sterilizing mules to keep their population down.

Tripler you point to the reason why they will make so much money. People can't move these super enormously fat humans around, and a robot that is good enough to do it will be of great use when removing them from the home transporting them to the large room with the reinforced bed, for them to finish dying from organ failure.
