Adding a new pet to the house

Since there's a lot of cat people here, I have a question, for you.

We're thinking about introducing another kitten into the household. Right now, we have just one three year old female cat, and I think that she thinks she's the only cat in the world. She's never been around any other pets of any kind. Otherwise, she seems to be a pretty normal kitty -- sort of skittish and fairly demanding when it comes to attention.

I just don't know how she will react. We think it would be fun for her to have another kitty to frolic with when we're not home.

Will she resent the newcomer and beat it up, or will she "adopt" a new baby? Anybody have any experience with this?

If we do decide to get another kitty, should we set up a seperate litter box and/or food and water dish?

If you are going to get another cat for your female cat, get a male kitten. Introducing an already grown cat is MUCH more difficult than introducing a kitten and it makes things much easier if the other cat is the opposite sex.

Here's some advice we've used over the years:
1. Don't expect them to become instant friends and don't discipline your current cat if she hisses or strikes out at the kitten. Give them time. DON'T force them upon one another.
2. Separate litter/eating areas might be a good idea. I don't have much experience with this one 'cause our kitten we brought home was instantly loved by our big male cat but she didn't want anything to do with him. Used the litterbox from day one and never had any problems eating.
3. It is WONDERFUL having more than one cat. You are correct: they entertain each other and aren't as lonely or bored when you're not home. Plus, they are so fun to watch as they play together.

I say go for it! It'd be a wonderful addition to your family. Just remember: always spay or neuter (there's my ASCPA plug! :) )

What BunnyGirl sez. Don't expect them to be instant friends. There will probably be some spats, so just let the cats sort things out for themselves. In time, hopefully they will become buddies.

At one time, there was one dog and one cat in my house. When each got a companion, it made a real difference all around.
