View Full Version : Wtf kfc
I had a craving tonight and stopped by for one of my favorite fast food meals... an extra crispy breast meal with mashed potatoes with gravy and cole slaw from KFC. I was told "we no longer make extra crispy." WHAT... I know the economy is bad, but is the extra breading really breaking the bank? I don't like the regular, and I can't believe they have done this... it has been on the menu since 1860 or so. I thought I'd never go back when they changed from the amazing white gravy to the brown stuff they serve now, but get rid of my extra crispy and you have now officially lost a customer.
And as long as I'm ranting... I got an ad for Arby's for $5.01 specials. They used to have 5 roast beef sandwiches for $5. Now they have a "special" for ONE sandwich with fries and a drink for $5.01. So, hold on a minute while I do the math, but I think it used to be roughly $1 for a sandwich. I know that the cup costs more than the soda so I'll give them a generous $0.25 for the drink, and since you can get the fries from the dollar menu I'll say the "Fries and drink combo" is worth roughly $1.25. So they raised the price from $1 to $3.75 for the sandwich and they want me to think this is a special deal?
Keep this up and I may have to start eating real food.

No more extra crispy? Fuck that shit. I'll make my own before I'll eat regular.

And I'll move the food chat over to Cafe Society -- not that KFC has anything in common with a cafe...
The gal at the register said "only at some stores". Since this is the only one near me it is gone as far as I'm concerned. Thinking about it more... if someone can tell me where I can get it nearby I may be willing to make the drive (but I'll still be pissed at my local place)

Why would you want extra crispy chicken when you can have the double-down sandwich? (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/24/kfcs-double-down-sandwich_n_266848.html)
Ok, I've got the flyer in my hand... I can get a French Dip and Swiss, or a Roast Beef Gyro, or a Roast Chicken Ranch, or a Roast Beef Patty Melt, or a REGULAR ROAST BEEF combo for $5.01. I used to get 5 REGULAR ROAST BEEF sandwiches for $5.

I'd just like an explanation of how I can go to KFC, a place that sells chicken, used to be called "Kentucky Fried Chicken", is mostly known for their chicken, advertises chicken, cooks a lot of chicken, and isn't where you'd go for beef, or pork, or duck, or anything much but chicken, and order a bucket of chicken, and be told about one time in three that it'll be about 20 minutes or so while they cook some more chicken.
Because they ran out of chicken. At the chicken place. Which pretty much exists to sell chicken.

No, but I saw one hanging around. . .;)
As for the whole Arby's thing, yeah, the "5 for $5.00" is always a highly-marketed, short-term special offer. I'm pretty sure they're hoping you'll come in for your 5 roast beef sandwiches to take home to feed your family, and while you're there, you'll get a number of side-items and soft drinks, too. It's the fast-food equivalent of what supermarkets call "loss leaders". They're willing to make little to no profit on the sandwiches, because they make up for it in selling a lot more other crap.
Spud, it sucks that you can't get your hands on the delicious, crispy, deep-fried goodness you crave (and in the process, get the crispy, deep-fried goodness on your hands, but hey, that's what they have napkins for. . .). For my money, KFC started pissing me off when they stopped giving you real honey to put on your biscuits and started giving you "honey-flavored spread".

The key word here being "used to." The five for $5 deal, aside from being a special promotion, has been the 4 for $5 for a few years now. Actually, I'm rather thinking last time I saw it advertised it was actually 3 for $5. Inflation's a bitch.

The KFC near me seems to run out of cooked and ready to go chicken on Friday afternoons around 5 p.m. There's always a 20 minute wait while they cook more. The place is filled with hungry, crabby people waiting waiting waiting, and I'm surprised a customer hasn't lost his shit yet. (Me, I'm just as hungry and crabby, but I wait quietly and meekly because I thank God I don't have to work behind the counter of a KFC to get by in life. Yet.)

About a year or so ago, I went to my local KFC to pick up a couple pot pies after many, many successful pot pie visits to this KFC. This time, I was told that I had to buy a pot pie combo with a drink in order get a pot pie. "Wait a sec", says I. "I can't just buy a pot pie any longer? I have to spend extra money and get a drink I have no interest in?"
"Sorry, that's the way it is now. They changed the system. We have no way to sell you a pot pie by itself."
That was the last time I spent money at KFC. It struck me as insane that they would try to force me to buy a drink -- which is of course a huge profit margin for them, especially at the drive-through with no refills -- in order to purchase an entree item. I even e-mailed the company about it (not that they responded, nor did I expect them to).
I did go there for the free Oprah coupon grilled chicken fiasco thingie though. My morals allow for free chicken.

I do love the extra crispy and feel there's no point in eating the original recipe but despite having a KFC about two blocks away from my house, I haven't been there Since January 2008. The last time I went was to get a Failure in a Bowl (http://www.avclub.com/articles/av-club-taste-test-special-the-bowl-at-the-howling,2130/).
It was delicious, but I don't know what the higher ups at KFC are thinking. They're coming up with a lot of crazy stuff in the past few years.
And of course, I'm still kind of miffed that they changed their french fries 15 or so years ago. They've changed them 3 or 4 times since, but the way they originally were was the best.

Sweet, as a former KFC employee (1992-1994) there is finally a topic on The Dope I can speak to with a bit of expertise!
It's a BITCH to keep fresh chicken ready. After so long of sitting in the heat window dealio it has to be pitched. I can't recall what the time frame was, but it wasn't that long. And to make the chicken, it almost never makes any sense than to make a full batch, or maybe a half batch. Well, if you have a dead couple hours, all that chicken goes to waste. Or take into account the family of 50 that comes through and orders 2 18 piece meals during dinner rush. That can nearly wipe your supply out. And then of course it takes at least 20 minutes for a fresh batch of chicken.
After KFC it was sooo nice working at Burger King. A burger can go from frozen to ready in like 5 minutes tops. And it was extremely rare that we'd run out of cooked meat.

My parents really like Arbys, and the one they go to gives them a big discount because of their age, but on the couple of occasions I have gone with them (I dont eat meat, so I just get a soda and maybe have a few fries) I was blown away how overpriced the menu seems. I dont eat that much fast food, but Arbys seems like its about as expensive as an average mid-level sit down place like Chilis or Red Robin...................
My parents get a good deal, but for the average customer, I think its WAY too expensive for the level of food you get.

Regarding running out of chicken at KFC, it seems silly to pitch the chicken after it's been sitting for x amount of time. They should throw it in the fridge and offer it half-price as picnic chicken. Any time I buy fried chicken I buy extra so I can have cold leftovers for lunch the next day.
Did anyone see a Wombat running through? I thought I did but couldn't see it clearly. Anyway, I appologize for the mis posting. On the "I went to X restaurant and they were out of X" side-topic, I once worked at a pita-sandwich shop. Think Subway, only in a pocket pita instead of on bread.
Yep, we ran out of pitas. The only things we could sell were cookies, soda, and "salads" (which were the contents of a sandwich with extra lettuce, minus the pita, and a buck MORE).
Luckily the owner showed up with a trunkload of pitas about a half-hour later.

When I worked at Subway, there was a night when we ran out of bread, because the morning shift forgot/was too busy to bake it. We had more dough and all, but it took awhile to thaw, prep, and proof...so for about an hour and half we were completely out. For me the KFC franchise ruined one of my old favorites when they combined with Long John Silver's. LJS used to have the best fish and chips you could get from a fast food place. Now they cook the fish in the same oil they cook the chicken in, and the delicate batter is a thing of the past.

My local KFC burnt down a couple of months ago, or rather, the bins outside caught fire and the whole place is still shut cos apparently it's full of asbestos.
Sounds like the asbestos didn't do its job. :)
I used to have KFC as a client. I know that there were certain items that they offered that every franchisee was contractually obligated to carry (Original Recipe chicken, Snackers, etc.), and there were some items that were optional, depending on what the franchisee felt would sell well in his or her market.
Sounds like Extra Crispy has now wound up on that second list (I can confirm that the company has not discontinued it). I'd have to guess that the original poster's franchisee has decided that it didn't sell well enough anymore. As another poster noted, KFC cooks their chicken in batches...if they were consistently throwing out partial batches of Extra Crispy because it wasn't selling well enough, that'd be a fairly easy decision for the franchisee (though, obviously, disappointing to Extra Crispy fans).

Looking around online, it looks like probably what I got was a 5 for $5.95, not a 5 for $5. My mistake!
My local Arby's has had 5 for $5 at least twice so far this year, so you may not have been mistaken.
I last saw 5 for $5.95 several years ago.

Ha! I have TWO Publixes! I have Publixes I don't even go to, but I keep them here in case I ever want to.
:deduces where one of them is, goes to web site to see where second one is:
Holy crap! Columbia has more Publixes than Lynchburg has liquor! There are two just in Irmo?!? Irmites get to chose between two but none for Charlotte?!?
Oh, now it's on. It is so on.

It's because you won't give us the fucking Costco. We're holding Publix hostage.

You sure it wasn't 4-for-5? I remember being pissed when the promo came up again a few years ago, and was only 4 for $5.00, and 3 for $5 for the "better" sandwiches (Beef 'n Cheese). I used to get 10 for $10, and eat for a couple of days on that...

Here in Washington State we had 5 for $5 just about six weeks ago. Now I wish I'd taken advantage of it - I will next time it comes around...

Yup, I'm sure I saw it sometime over the summer here in the midwest. I remember because I've seen it go from 5 for $5 to 4 for $5 to 5 for $5.95 etc. and was surprised they went back to the original. That is why I was surprised they wanted me to trade 4 delicious roast beef sandwiches for an order of lousy fries and a poorly mixed soda... oh, and I owe them a penny as well.
And this was after I went to KFC and ordered three popcorn chickens for the kids and then ordered my Extra Crispy Breast Meal and was pointed to the sign that they now only serve crap. There was something else on the sign that they also don't serve, but my eyes were so filled with rage I couldn't read it (so I also may have misread that they were only serving crap now... it may have been original and grilled). The girl at the counter re-assured me, just after I threw the cash register through the window, that they did still serve it at "some stores", but this is the only one close to my house.
I was going to go next door to Taco Bell, but was afraid that what I was ordering would now be on the $9.99 menu.
Sorry, gotta go... my wife seems to think I forgot my medicine tonight... AGAIN.

I have also been to an Arby's when they ran out of beef. I ordered chicken.
They were out of that too.

Don't make me point out that y'all also have all the gorram Rush's in the world, too.
And Edna's.

We invented Rush's. What has Charlotte invented?
That's what I thought.

I've been to a Tim Hortons that was out of donuts
Did you go in real late? Because they do often run out in the wee hours, as they bake them in the morning, keeping up with their mantra 'always fresh'.

On the topic of WTF KFC, I went to a KFC in Barcelona once and it was totally not up to American standards. For one thing, the portions were eensy weensy. The leg looked like it had come off a pigeon. And no biscuit! But the weirdest thing was that the mashed potatoes (including gravy) and the coleslaw came in individualized sealed mini-dishes. You had to peel them open. Whah? Were they fillings these things from some master supply in the U.S. and then shipping them to Spain? Bizarre.
