View Full Version : The Feud: It Was Nothing Like a Dream: A 70s Feud by 42fish [Game Over]

Object of the game:
Give the most popular answer for each category.

Rules:
1. No reading the thread before answering. This is on the honor system.
2. Formatting rules must be followed (see below).
3. Joke answers will not be considered, as it is not fair to other players.
4. Google (etc.) is allowed, if you desire.
5. The game will end with 50 entrants, or when I get time to score it.
6. There is no Rule 6.
7. Special Rules for this particular Feud: None

Formatting rules:
To make semi-automated scoring possible, and my job easier, make you post look exactly like this:

1. answer
2. answer
3. answer
4. answer

No double spacing, no smilies, no "list" function, no urls, no periods, no quote marks, and no punctuation if it is not necessary. Put "pass" if you want to leave an answer blank. If you feel you must qualify your answer, do it AFTER THE LIST!
If you don’t format like this, your answers might be DISQUALIFIED.

Scoring:
With 50 entrants, an answer with a match is worth 2x the number of people matching it. If 4 people match, they each get 8 points for that answer. No matches = 0 points.
Formula: Score = 100 / (# of entrants) x (# of matches)

Good luck!

If any of you have ideas for Feuds -and would like me to score them- PM me. If anyone wants to run their own Feud, feel free. I will help any way I can.

Read the rules!

#6: Did you mean one hit wonder artist or song? I can't recall the name of Debbie's big hit, I think she won an Oscar for it.

I meant the artist, but unfortunately left the question ambiguously worded, creating a scoring hassle for our moderator. Sorry about that, Dolores.

To help a bit, here's a matching of mentioned songs/artists with the corresponding artist/song:

Debbie Boone - You Light Up My Life
Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight
Ram Jam - Black Betty
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
The Knack - My Sharona
David Essex - Rock On
Coven - One Tin Soldier
Apollo 100 - Joy
Focus - Hocus Pocus
Golden Earring - Radar Love
C.W. McCall - Convoy
Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
Don McLean - American Pie
Vicki Lawrence - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
Clint Holmes - Playground in My Mind
Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
Minnie Riperton - Loving You
Flying Lizards - Money

Two potential problem areas, but no-one's matched them yet so the points may prove to be moot:

The Turtles - Weren't even close to a one-hit band, but their biggest one was "Happy Together" in case anyone puts that down

"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" - a hit for both the New Seekers (technically not a one-hit band, although nothing else they recorded was anywhere near as big) and the Hilltop Singers

Nor were they a '70s band, for that matter.

I propose that question #6 be stricken from the record due to unclear wording (band or song title?)It was perhaps a bit unclear, but Band is the only real logical choice. How can an individual song be a "one-hit wonder"? Every song is a hit or it's not; in short, every song that's a hit is a "one-hit" wonder, for how can a single song have multiple hits*? It's got to refer to the band, so anyone who answered with a song should have that vote counted for the band.

*Yes, yes, there are cover versions blah blah blah, but incidents of that are pretty rare, while one-hit wonder bands aren't...

In all seriousness, I don't agree.

I know a lot of the songs that are "one hit wonders" from 42fish's list (post #52) above, but I had no idea who or what band sang / performed them.

I will, however, accept either ruling on this - it's just a game, after all. My request was 99% in jest.

When I read question #6, I interpreted it to be the hit song by the artist that only had that one hit. So when I collate, I will match songs with singers because we were all trying to answer the basic premise - the hit song by a one-hit wonder artist. Thanks for the list, 42fish. :)

When I hear the phrase "one-hit wonder," I think of an individual or band, not the song itself. The phrase is IME used to refer to the performer(s) and not the song.

I'll just hope that I'm in. If I've counted right, I am.

I'm just sorry I missed it for the past few days. The title threw me off, and I thought it was the one about the sixties.

Came in to see how I did, and remembered the board crashed as I submittted my post. I'd have done well, too. I remember having Liddy and Steinem and Hocus Pocus by Focus (sorry, Labtrash). Oh well.

I was one of the three that picked TNTLWOIG by Vicky Lawrence. unfortunately the extra points won't help my placing.

Lets see I was last in the 60's, 32nd in the 70's. I figure if we do a feud on the roaring 2020's, I might get into the top 10.

I wonder if anyone could design a good feud on the future.

Considering I grew up in the seventies, I had expected to do better.

I had considered bell bottoms as my first choice for #7 but I guess I figured they were more of a sixties fashion.

I'm surprised I was the only person who guessed Roots for #9. Granted it was a mini-series rather than a regular series but it was a huge phenomenon - one of the few televison series that actually had a historical impact on society.
