View Full Version : What other websites/boards do you frequent?
01-02-2001, 10:49 AM
because I like web-comics.
01-02-2001, 12:16 PM
OK, I'll play. Here's some pages I frequent, because they tend to be updated daily and have something to say:
Rob Neyer's daily baseball column at ESPN (http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/neyer_rob/)
David Poland's daily movie column, The Hot Button (http://www.roughcut.com/today/hot.button/index.html)
Jeff Well's daily-ish movie column, Hollywood Confidential (http://www.reel.com/reel.asp?node=movienews/confidential)
Obscure Store (http://www.obscurestore.com/), the original source for all those stupid headlines on the radio
White House Press Briefing transcripts (http://www.whitehouse.gov/library/hot_briefings/index.html), because they are just too cool.

There are other message boards?
01-02-2001, 03:02 PM
The board for the people in my school that some girl put up. It's incredibly stupid and all they do over there is talk shit about everyone, but me and my friends like to go there and lighten things up.

smackfu: The Press Briefing site is cool! Thanks for providing that link!
As for me, I often frequent the Duke Basketball Report's bulletin board (http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/dbrboard/bin/blist.cgi), The Onion (http://www.theonion.com), Zentertainment (http://www.zentertainment.com), and some others.

ummm, the Straight Dope Message Boards have kind of spolied me for other message boards. Y'all are just too smart, you make the rest of the internet look downright retarded in comparison.
However, I will sometimes cruise the boards at VegSource (http://www.vegsource.com)
I read The Onion (http://www.theonion.com) every week.
I read the comics You Damn Kid (http://www.youdamnkid.com/) every weekday and Bob the Angry Flower (http://www.angryflower.com/) every Friday.
I visit Suck.com (http://www.suck.com/) every so often, but definitely every Wednesday to read Polly Esther's Filler (http://www.suck.com/filler/archive/nc_all.html)
I visit SpinnWebe (http://www.spinnwebe.com) and The Brunching Shuttlecocks (http://www.brunching.com/) pretty regularly.
But the SD is the only website I must visit every single day or else my head will explode. :D
* Rinkworks.com (http://www.rinkworks.com/); specifically the computer stupidities (http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/) section. Hilarious!
* Of course, I have to mention Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/)!
* Doomworld.com (http://www.doomworld.com/). The best source for Doom stuff. I entered a level into the 10-Sector Contest (I suppose you'd have to know a bit about Doom editing to get the point of the contest, so I won't explain it here) held by doomworld.com. Good site.
* Sonic Team Jr. (http://ssrg.emulationzone.org/stjr/) - I'm coming out of the closet! I'm a Sonic the Hedgehog fan! (In fact, I found The Straight Dope from a link on an StH site.) STJr. is an amateur software team that is making a Sonic fan-game (there are TONS of fan-games (here (http://ssrg.emulationzone.org/fanmade/))). I am doing a lot of the artwork for the game that STJr is making. Go check it out!
* Nameless Software (http://www.stas.net/kinkajoy/) - Okay, I don't actually VISIT the site that often, but it's my website, and you should all go there now. ;)
Other message boards:
* STJr. message board (http://server5.ezboard.com/bsonicteamjuniorforum) - the Sonic Team Jr. message board. I'm "KinkaJoy" on that board.
* 3D Realms forums (http://www.3drealms.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro) - 3D Realms is a great company. Most of my respect for the company comes from the fact that the e-mail addresses of all the company members are available to the public (something most game companies wouldn't do in a million years) and they even post on the message boards occasionally.

I read the Brunching Shuttlecocks, and post at the Official Unofficial Brunching Shuttlecocks Message Board (http://www.exit76.com/brunching/cgi). My screen name there isn't Tansu.

Well, Snopes, Rinkworks and Spinnwebe have already been mentioned, so...

I check http://www.newscientist.com/ once a week. And it has a link to http://www.last-word.com/.

Pretty much here (the greatest "cool knowledge" website ever), and http://www.dualboot.net/forums , the greatest computer message board ever.

My favorite place, Pleiades Networks, recently ended a 5 year run. :( It's really hard to find a smallish, intimate community on the web that's intended for women but isn't like the women's magazine idea of what women want. I can't stand most of the so-called women's sites. They're fake, shallow, and really corporately driven.
My new hangout, Sisterstreet.com, is another not-for profit women's site. Like Pleiades, SS is run entirely by volunteers. The site isn't affiliated with Pleiades, but it has some of the same admins, moderators, and participants. It's a very laid back, low tech women's community. Men can post there too, but they have to respect that women are primary.
Snopes is a given, but here are a few other general interest sites:
Quackwatch - http://www.quackwatch.com
Salon Magazine - http://www.salon.com
SpamCop - nuke spammers! - http://spamcop.net
my husband's favorite site - Slashdot, news for nerds - http://slashdot.org/index.pl

I lurk at Trash Talk (http://www.cfis.org/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi) brought to you by the Junk Science folks.

The forum on Simhq.com and anandtech.com...OK I usually just lurk on anandtech.

ACOL (http://www.planetsid.com)!!! Actually that's sorta the main message board in my life (sorry guys). But I do think very fondly of the SDMB... sorta like my home away from home if you know what I mean. :) And I'm very fond of the people here too (well, one of the people, don't know the rest of you terribly well, but you all seem like a good bunch).
Oh yeah, suppose I might as well put my forum (http://pub14.ezboard.com/bthedragonscave) down as well, crappy and mostly un-posted-in as it is. :)

The only other MB I spend any time at is Fathom (http://fff.fathom.org/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&number=3&SUBMIT=Go), the board that OpalCat started last spring. It's a more low-key version of this board, in a lot of ways.
I click into the news at www.washingtonpost.com; other than that, I don't have any 'regular' sites.
01-16-2001, 02:51 PM
A few gems that haven't already been mentioned...
is a question-and-answer site which has quite a similar flavour to the SDMB, and is if anything slightly quirkier.
gets my vote for funniest thing on the web
are must-visits for any movie fans
brings together a lot of weird wonderfuls that would otherwise take hours of surfing to find.
And finally... there are righteous people who get incensed about some of the horrible, nasty things you can find on the web. And all of those things are here in one tidy collection that you don't ever want to visit:
