Fourth episode in & they hit pay dirt!

Leonard & Penny are going strong. Great use of Sheldon, Raj & Howard.
And the montage of Sheldon & Raj hard at work had me laughing so hard I was gasping for air.

I too enjoyed this ep more than the prev few. Afterwards I thought that I was simply enjoying it as a half hour of mindless entertainment - I think for a while I was expecting it to be something more.

I thought the Eye of the Tiger bit mildly amusing but overlong. But my wife was laughing out loud.

My fave bit was Raj's interview w/ the sherry.

I think I was continuously laughing out loud on this one. Eye of the Tiger bit was perfection. Love the Sheldon/Raj chemistry.

They need to do an ep or two, where there's no A story / B story formula though. Include the whole gang in a certain situation. I like them when they're all together, they're the perfect ensemble cast.

I liked the episode in general, but thought it could have been better. I did enjoy the work dynamic between Sheldon and Raj, and I think they're doing the Penny and Leonard thing better than expected. I thought last week's episode with Sheldon trying to "train" Penny with chocolates was hilarious.

I love that they are letting Penny and Leonard be a couple.

Eye of the tiger while they just stood there was funny.

I think part of the reason why Penny / Leonard is working (so far) is that it was never a love/hate relationship (ex Sam and Dianne), nor even a strong sexual tension relationship.

I just recently started watching. What's Raj's deal with women? He can't talk to them unless he's drinking?

I loved the Eye of the Tiger thing too. Take that, all you people who think that thinking isn't hard!

Yep. Specifically, hot women.

I thought it was hilarious that one drink is just enough... but two drinks and he's tryin' to get 'em into the hot tub.

I laughed so incredibly hard during the Eye of the Tiger montage. Usually, jokes that go on too long bore me pretty quickly- but that one was brilliant.

That's exactly Raj's issue with women.

What movie was Eye of the Tiger featured in, that was a take-off from some 80's flick wasn't it?
I was laughing.

I loved the training Penny episode from last week too.

Kelly Cuoco cohosted the View this morning, and she was on some talk show last night - Letterman probably. She's adorable.

Rocky movie/Eye of the Tiger my friend just walked in and confirmed for me.

What made the Eye of the Tiger montage was the pause while Raj took an Aspirin. It was that, then the music starting again, that made me laugh.

Eye of the Tiger is from "Rocky III", but used in an action context. The use here was pretty darn funny.

I agree - definitely the strongest episode this year! I laughed several times.

Raj only needs to think he is drinking. In the past he has been fooled by non-Alcoholic beer. And the effect of the drink is instantaneous: once past the teeth, the "drink" takes effect.

Raj: I'm an astrophysicist, "astro" means "space"!

Sheldon: "Astro" means "Star".

Raj: I would so totally kick your ass in my native tongue!

Sheldon: English is your native tongue.

I love that they are letting Penny and Leonard be a couple.

I think this is always a mistake in any show to hook people up. The two have already gotten boring and it's really noticed when the show shifts to Sheldon

Well, Markxxx, I respect your opinion re Leonard & Penny, but I disagree. I think it would have been boring for Leonard to remain a loser at romance forever. And Penny's character has room to grow if she's in a relationship but can still be a funny observer of the guys. I think it would have been much more cliche to drag things out between them.

I'm with well he's back. It's unnatural to keep people apart if they really feel a connection. That's not how it happens in real life, and a TV show can reflect that without losing comic momentum.

But I didn't watch the first season, so I don't know if Penny and Leonard really feel a connection or if the romance is just a plot point. They seem well suited to each other, but they also seem like a bit of an odd couple -- hot blonde and nerdy homonoculous (or whatever he said). Do they have anything going for them besides proximity?

I think it would have been boring for Leonard to remain a loser at romance forever. He never was, though. This is the third season, right? He's a total geek in the anti-social meaning of the term, his three friends would easily win all three medals at the social retardation Olympics, and yet he's had relationships with two reasonably attractive women in three years. (Of the two Sara's, Gilbert is cute while Rue is at best not-ugly.) That's two women more successful than I would expect him to be.

He wasn't a loser compared to the other guys but you can't argue he was that great at maintaining either of those relationships. He was mostly just a sex buddy to Sara Gilbert and he was way in over his head with Sara Rue. The only other relationship he's ever had that was talked about was with the unseen Joyce Kim, and IIRC it only lasted a few short weeks then she "defected to North Korea." Sheldon is the only guy who hasn't had a storyline or anecdote about him being with anyone. Wolowitz and Raj both have at least slept with women and had chances and blew it because of one stupid thing.

Leonard is a guy who spends every night of the week doing preplanned activities with the rigidly scheduled Sheldon. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to think that the only times he's actively gone to bars to look for women in the past three years were the two times we saw him do so on the show. Like many geeks, he rarely if ever has any opportunity to meet women. Despite this, he managed to hook up with a colleague, then managed to steal a chick that Howard miraculously convinced to go to a second location alone with him.

I'd say Leonard, Howard and Raj are all batting at worst how they should be, but more likely outperforming expectations.

Where I thought (hoped?) they were going with this episode was, now that Raj's difficulty talking to women has cost him a job and maybe his visa, it's time for him to work on getting over it. I mean, even if he had gotten that job, how was he supposed to work with a hot colleague without ever speaking to her?

I know it's just a sitcom, but you still need to believe the characters to make it work. Even though Howard's a very over-the-top nerd/perv, I totally buy his character within the show's context. But I'm not buying this aspect of Raj's character anymore.

End of rant. I still like the show and this ep was mostly pretty funny.

Auntie Pam asked if Leonard and Penny had anything going for them as a couple - I'd say yes, at least in sitcom terms. Penny was tired of superficial guys who treated her badly. Leonard was initially interested in her just because of her looks but became her friend. The scenes they've shown with them kissing have a believable sexual chemistry. So yeah, I buy it.

The reason that I roll my eyes at Leonard/Penny is that we know it cannot last. The show has (at least) 2 more seasons, and I doubt they are going to have them drifting happily into wedded bliss. It seems like they are doing well now, but how long before the usual sitcom contrivences come ino play?

I am a cynic...

To expand, it's not that he can't talk to them unless he's drinking, it's that he can't talk at all when they're even in the room. I've started to get kinda sick of the gag until Penny yelled something through the door and Raj didn't know if he could talk or not.
