Arising from the circumcision thread...
I'm intrigued, I have often heard it mentioned about lubricant of one sort or another when engaging in auto-eroticism. So I really want to know - do you need to use lotion or not?

Edited title to better reflect thread topic.

I'm assuming by lotion you mean lubricant. If not, then I have to change my answer.
I prefer my lubricant to be extra virgin.

Yeah...I mean artificial lubricant of some sort.
Looking at the results, it seems that only around 20% of guys need - so where did this tv land meme of lotion for the deed arise?

Water works just fine for me. Baby oil burns.

Well, it was either that or a shot of pornography. Or an erection. And some networks just won't allow those.
Also, it can't be all that rare – or maybe all those high school boys I knew and whose rooms I visited really did have perpetual dry skin and the sniffles! ;)

and a follow up question - for those that do need lotion, how did you "find out"? The stroking part would come about by exploration - the lotion not so mcuh, its not the sort of thing young boys tend to keep in their rooms.
And for the $1,000 question - when you were 12 or 13, exactly where did you get lotion and did you / where did you hide it?

Never been able to get off manually without it. My house (dad a physician) was absolutely crawling with such substances.

I'm surprised so many people don't need/use it.
I've always heard/known of the concept of vasoline for that purpose, but rarely use that, it is too messy. So the idea was not new.

Water based lube is nice for a change of pace, but I rarely use it.

I don't see any reason to use lube. I've tried it maybe five times in 30 years. Nothing wrong with it, but certainly don't "need" it.

Actually, it seems the percentages vary greatly for cut and uncut men
For cut, 25% need it
For uncut 7% need it

I voted need lotion, though I don't actually need it to get off, I prefer it.
Finding out was a long string of experimenting. Spit then various products found around the house. Dial soap, Vaseline, hand lotion, Crisco, cooking oil, butter, most potential lubricants in my house were tried at some point. None of these things were kept in my room. There was an aspect of stealth to smuggling them in for a period then returning them before they were noticed missing.
These days I keep a bottle of water based lube around for those purposes and others.

Yeah, and the uncut is one person - I wonder if he is an anomoly?
Also given the prevalence of the meme of "needing" lotion, I wonder if I worded the poll poorly and should instead have used "prefer" (as opposed to need) and lubrication rather than lotion....

Dial soap, cooking oil? Wouldn't they have made you ..... "jiggly" - I couldn't imagine the sensation of either as being particularly agreeable - hell, a couple of brands of soap my wife buy I complain as when shower they were a bit more caustic than was comfortable....

For those who don't use lube, particularly uncut guys (but anyone can chime in, of course), when stroking, do you slide the outer sheath of skin back and forth over the head? In other words, as if you were sliding the plastic wrapper of a cigar up and down, without actually touching the cigar with your fingers? And do you get off that way?
I've never done that -- I make direct contact -- but some women I've been with have tried it, until I told them that it does nothing for me. But I've always wondered if some guys pleasure themselves that way.
To answer the OP, sometimes I use lube, sometimes I use spit, occasionally I get off just from very light dry stroking. And I have a few other tricks. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Based on the experience of a former poster, just don't use toothpaste (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=860395&postcount=47).

Could be worse, he could've grabbed a tube of ben gay instead of toothpaste.

LOL well I guess I'm thankfull I never thought of toothpaste.
The dial soap outside the shower was a bad idea. You spend any time massaging it in undiluted and it burns the sensitive parts. It worked fine while taking a shower constantly rinsing. Cooking oil was not preferred either it kinda lingered for a while and becomes tacky.
Live and learn. Boys do all types of stupid things. I'm thankful I made it to adulthood without serious injury and no chemical burns on my junk.

+1 here - its not exactly comfortable to have direct palm to head contact,
ETA - and when I ask about lube, I mean anykind of lube at all. I don't use anything, not spit, ky or any other permutation.
