View Full Version : Have any of you eaten at a Stony River Steakhouse?

They have recently opened a location within walking distance of our home, and are running promotions. Their menu is appealing though without surprises.
My general preference is to patronize locally owned restaurants, but a deal is a deal and we haven't eaten out in a while.

Looks like any midrange chain steakhouse, outback, bugaboo creek and that ilk. I say go for it. If nothing else it employs locals so people will have some jobs.

Actually IMO it's much closer to something like Ruth's Chris in terms of quality, not Outback. And there are actually only 10 locations in the country, so more like Ruth's Chris in that respect, too. Prices are more reasonable, though, and I think the steak is as good or better.
I've been to the one a few miles away and it's consistently very good. I always get the filet, but have been with people who've ordered fish or other beef and were happy with it. The size of some of the appetizers is giant, though - the smoked salmon appetizer was an entree-sized portion when we had it a couple years back, and quite good.
This has become our default New Year's Eve dinner spot.
I've been, and I was very disappointed. The prices that we paid we around what you would pay for prime cut beef, but the cuts were actually choice cut. So the steaks were not as good as we would get a Ruth's Chris or The Palm. And the prices weren't far from either place.

I worked at a Stoney River (briefly) a few years back. I think their food is good. Someone mentioned it is like Ruth's Chris. Yeah, I suppose, but probably not THAT good. Their "claim to fame," so to speak, are their Stone Puppies. Don't know what that is? Well, they're the complimentary, donut-like, sugar-encrusted rolls they drop off at your table once you sit down. Oh, you'll like them. It's like dessert before the meal. Oh, and they were the bane of my existence when I worked there. We ran out all the time because people would ask for refills.
But, their food is good and I would definitely recommend it as a place to eat--not work. ;)

I've dined at the one in Roswell, GA, on an expense account. I would say that Stoney River aims at and hits the quality and price points between Outback and Ruth's Chris. Since I ate there, I have been told that eating there on expenses is now frowned on by my company.
If my own money was on the line, I would be more likely to go to Outback or Ruth's Chris, depending on the occasion. If I just want a decent steak, Outback has that without some of the pretentious trappings that you get and pay for at Stoney River. If I want a no-holds-barred premium steak and dining experience, Ruth's Chris does that better.
