I'm looking for a quote from The Lord of the Rings. Somewhere in there, there is a statement about the effect of Sauron's works on Middle Earth, and how it would linger after his death and never be totally healed. I've very little more to go with than this paraphrase, and I'm not having much luck googling it. Could one of the esteemed MiddleEarthDopers help me out here?

You sure it was about Sauron and Middle Earth? This is from the end of The Silmarillion, about Morgoth.
But Morgoth himself the Valar thrust through the Door of Night beyond the Walls of the World, into the Timeless Void; and a guard is set for ever on those walls, and Eärendil keeps watch upon the ramparts of the sky. Yet the lies that Melkor, the mighty and accursed, Morgoth Bauglir, the Power of Terror and of Hate, sowed in the hearts of Elves and Men are a seed that does not die and cannot be destroyed; and ever and anon it sprouts anew, and will bear dark fruit even unto the latest days.

Here ends the SILMARILLION. If it has passed from the high and the beautiful to darkness and ruin, that was of old the fate of Arda Marred; and if any change shall come and the Marring be amended, Manwë and Varda may know; but they have not revealed it, and it is not declared in the dooms of Mandos.

I'm 99% sure that it was about Sauron and Middle Earth. I would even suggest that it was Gandalf saying it to one of the hobbits, but here's an echo of it in Galadriel's exchange with Frodo:

The evil that was devised long ago works on in many ways, whether Sauron himself stands or falls.

But that's not the quote I was looking for, which is rather more specific about the evils wrought by Sauron...I really hope I'm not making it up...
