View Full Version : Name 3 Things You Like About Yourself

Ok - so my bf and I have been talking about compliments today (and our respective issues with believing/accepting them.)
So, without too many snide remarks, please list 3 things you like about yourself.
And just so I can be a little more controlling and you can be a little more restricted, please do it in this way:
Name something physical you like about yourself (please avoid talking about the size of your sex organs).
Name something you like about your personality.
Name something you like about your activities/skills/creativity.
To get us started, here's mine.
I like my eyes. They are blue, but have enough flecks in them that the shade of blue can change based on what I'm wearing.
I like my (usual) ability to make people laugh. Nothing makes me happier than hearing someone give a hearty chuckle at something I've said.
I like that I can sing. I love music so much, I'm glad that I can sing along without being worried what I sound like. And I love the way music can help me express myself in ways I can't always say with paper or normal conversation.

1. For a guy in his mid-50s, I'm in pretty good overall physical shape and have good stamina. Can't do it at the drop of a hat, but after some shorter hikes or rides, I can hike 15 miles or bicycle 50 miles. I've never awed anyone with my strength or fitness, but my body's a good, reliable friend.
2. I'm a fairly reflective person.
3. I'm a damned good analytical thinker.

3. I'm an excellent listener. Doesn't that count as a skill?

1. My body is very nicely symmetrical
2. I am fanatically loyal to my family and friends. If you need something, and it's within my power to do, consider it done.
3. I'm a fantastic cook, particularly with French and Caribbean food, but I can deconstruct and recreate pretty much anything I taste.

1. I have a kickass immune system. I haven't been sick since I was 12. That was 10 years ago.
2. I have awesome vision. I can see real far and real clear. Part of that is probably my ability to reason out what tiny words say...but regardless.
2. I'm a great kisser.

I'm really healthy and in good shape.
I'm extremely easygoing; pretty much nothing fazes me.

I have good hair (it gets compliments from strangers, that must mean it's good).
I'm calm and reliable in a crisis.
I'm not a terrible guitarist (I can play things so people recognise them).

1. I am in fairly good shape for a woman my age, as far as flexibility and strength.
2. I am a good leader, and also a good facilitator.
3. Now that I'm approching 50, I feel as if I'm on top of my game in my work skills. Also in my hobby which is cooking.

1. The fact that most everything works fairly well. I can bicycle, hike, travel and am free from serious medical issues right now.
2. Fairly independent and self determined
3. Very introspective and curious about myself and the world, which has given me loads of information that comes in useful almost every day.

1. I'm a fairly muscular guy, this is based on a friend who is into bodybuilding saying "you are more muscular than I thought". It may have been said in passing, but it was certainly a compliment coming from him. Also, I'm not repulsive, or ugly. Zaftig, or, hefty might be accurate, but I'm fine with that.
2. I'm am friends with a whole lot of people, pretty much every one I meet. I can't think of a single person that doesn't like me (IRL at least). I used to be able to walk into a bar when a band was playing, and know a dozen people. Now, I'm almost surprised that any of us still go to bars at all.
3. I am an accomplished musician. I have played before crowds of thousands, opened for acts that everyone has heard of, and I've been sought after for my skills by numerous people. My bands have sold thousands of CDs, and I can be heard globally by a simple Google search.
Why did I think this might be cathartic? Oh well.

1. Name something physical you like about yourself (please avoid talking about the size of your sex organs).
I'm sorry, I have to break your rule. My breasts are awesome.
2. Name something you like about your personality.
I openly admit my mistakes and make honest efforts to correct them.
3. Name something you like about your activities/skills/creativity. I have always been a deeply creative person (esp. in writing and music.) As I've matured, I've become more analytical. The result of combining my creative instinct with a learned pragmatism is that I am very good at synthesizing diverse bits of information into a cohesive whole and using it for practical problem solving. Now I'm capable of artistic exploration in areas not normally associated with creativity.

1. Women say I have a wonderful smile with "adorable" dimples. I'm inclined to agree ;)
Also, I'm quite happy with the shape of my penis.
What? You only said to avoid talking about the size!
2. I'm reasonably quick-witted and have a decent, if a bit twisted, sense of humor.
3. I've always been very athletic. I'm a good basketball player and avid snowboarder but recently I've started to embrace my creative side. I've recently discovered that I seem to be a better-than-average writer and a decent photographer.
I just need to figure out how to parlay this into a steady paycheck...

1. I like my collarbones. I'm a big fan of prominent collarbones, so it's great that I have them myself.
2. I like that I can simplify things in ways that people will understand them. The details may escape me, but I paint a pretty good general picture.
3. I like that I have some manner of writing ability. I'm no Terry Pratchett, but I'm not bad and I know I can improve. I think writing is one of the more useful skills one can have, even for something as simple as a message board post.

I like the color of my hair -- it has always been, and still is (when pushing 50) a fairly bright shade of orange. More importantly. it's all still there.... I very seldom let anything really stress me out -- life's little problems go off me like water off the back of a duck. Technical ability -- I can figure out how almost any widget works (and why it isn't working right now.)

1. I have a great ass. Men and women commented on it. If I saw another dude with my ass, I'd be instantly in love.
2. I'm fun to be around. I have lots of friends, who enjoy my company (and vice versa of course)
3. I'm very creative. Anything artistic-y is in good hands with me. Currently enjoying photography a lot.

1. I have pretty impressive legs - big muscular quads and chunky calves. Others have commented on them, too.
2. I am really easy-going - I rarely get stressed and prefer to go with the flow. "no worries" is my catchphrase
3. I am a capable and confident guitarist and singer.

They aren't sex organs -- they're secondary sex characteristics.
Me:
1. My hair is very thick, straight, shiny -- dark brown with great streaks of silver through it.
2. I'm very kind. The older I get, the more kindness strikes me as important, and I rank this over my intelligence and sense of humor, both of which are also pretty impressive.
3. I have an excellent eye for beauty, and have found media where I can express that (photography, needlework).

1. My brown eyes and long eyelashes.
2. I enjoy having a laugh and a bit of cheeky back-and-forth with people (as long as they’re clearly at ease with it).
3. I’m naturally a very lazy person but for the past 3 years I have been walking to and from work every day.

Name something physical you like about yourself (please avoid talking about the size of your sex organs).
I'm tall. It allows me to reach things others have trouble with, and allows me to help those hunched-over little old ladies at the grocery store!
Name something you like about your personality.
Thanks to my father's genes, I (and all my sisters) have been blessed with a good sense of humor!
Name something you like about your activities/skills/creativity.
I seem to have some kind of natural gift for language. Not foreign language, native language. I love words. I love knowing the origins of words. Did you know the word "coupon" is from the French meaning "A corner cut off"? Did you know that "Kitchen" is from the Old English word for "cuisine"? I love stuff like that, and I really like that I love it!
This is a great idea for a thread!

I'm not sure which is sadder, that I had such a difficult time coming up with 3 things, or that when I did, I decided I didn't want to share them?
About all I felt good about was "I'm tall." Pathetic, no?

Name something physical you like about yourself (please avoid talking about the size of your sex organs).
Name something you like about your personality.

Physical: I love my eyes. They are large, and dark, and when I look just right I can have the most innocent look in them...and I have even grown to love the color, even though it's just plain brown. Yet, there are lovers of brown eyes.
Personality: I am constantly upbeat. Sometimes it annoys people, yes, but really, I can't be arsed to wait around for the nay-sayers. Life is just a little time you get - let me enjoy it. Today I came to work after digging my car out from a foot of snow. It's tiring work, and the drive in was pretty dangerous. And yet - I still found time to admire how pretty everything was.
Since I can't bike anymore because it's cold and snowy and pitch dark when I leave work, I yanked out the Dance Dance Revolution mat and have been doing some dances/exercise on it every evening.
I admit, people who can't take compliments graciously kind of irk me. I mean, not that I hold it against them or anything, but the proper response to "I love that sweater!" Is not "This old thing", or "You look great"; "I'm so fat!". That is insulting the complimenter, to say that they thought something was attractive when it is not. The proper response is to smile, and say "Thank you!" and mean it.

This is way harder than I thought it would be.
1. I have a very ("overly", I've been told) expressive face, and can manipulate it in fun ways: I can wiggle my eyebrows in alteration, fold my tongue into three pleats, and move my nose like a rabbit's.
2. I would say I go out of my way to be helpful, but that makes it sound like a conscious effort, and it's not. I'm instinctively helpful. You've got a problem? Yo, I'll solve it!
3. I accomplish a lot of things that seem difficult or impressive to others, yet are really pretty mundane, because I'm almost always willing to give something a shot.

Aw, I didn't want to come across as all modest and such, or inspiring a pity party. In fact, I considered this a kind of interesting exercise. I guess what troubled me most about 2 and 3 was coming up with something that really fit into those categories. For example:
2. I know I am very generous to and supportive of my family and a few close friends, but I know there are many more people who think I am a jerk (and who are probably correct.)
I think I am pretty smart and funny, but I tend to have a mean, critical streak which isn't really attractive.
And I think I have a pretty large vocabulary and fund of knowledge, but you guys consistently demonstrate the shallowness of my pools.
3. I'm pretty good company on a golf course - and a decent player as well, but that seems kinda trite in terms of setting out a top 3.
So my real top 3, which may or may not really fit the categories, are:
1. I'm tall
2. I'm REALLY good at mentally organizing/prioritizing things, and succinctly expressing them verbally or in writing (tho I'm generally too lazy to carry through!)
3. Beyond a doubt the accomplishment/activity of which I am the most proud, and to which I have put the most effort, is that my wife and I seem to have been pretty successful in raising 3 pretty decent young adults.

1) I'm odd enough looking that I can easily change my look and be happy with it. Shave my head, change styles whatever.
2) Whatever you are, I'm cool with it as long as its basically legal. I don't have gay friends or European friends or poor friends or whatever ------ I just got friends. If you're fun to be around nothing else matters much.
3) I travel well; always did. All my jobs, all my hobbies, and all my life (except for my brief stint teaching) have let me bounce around the country and even out of it. I've gotten to see places, meet people, do things that other people dream about. Lived in Fort Niagara for a week, raced at Ontario, hunted in Canada and fished the Bridger Wilderness Area

OK, I'll bite:
1) I have a really huge ... oh yeah, no sex organs talk. Shoot. Well, to be fair, everything else about me is huge (I'm 6'3" and 175 lbs with size 13 shoes). I also really like the van Dyke I grew a few years back.
2) I have a great sense of humour (I'd like to think so, I am a standup comedian after all ... ). I also like the fact that I'm learned (but then, I'm a Doper, that comes with the territory)
3) I like that I'm an anthematologist, as there isn't that many in the world and is a great conversation piece. I also like my ginormous flag collection (I have several hundred, the south wall of my basement is covered in flags)
Hmmm, that's two compliments per section, so 6. There you go!

1 -- I like my eyes. They are green and brown, but I really like the shape. They are sort of doe-eyed in shape.
2 -- I love my off-beat sense of humor and making people crack up with unexpected one-liners.
3 -- I am crafty and good with my hands. I knit, crochet, sew, throw pots, make jewelry, weave baskets, do cross-stitch, sew, do toll painting, etc. (And have way too much stuff in my craft closet as a result!)

Wow! This is hard. I am beginning to think I may have some self image problems.
1. I am pretty of face. (I get compliments from others all the time, so I am not the only one who thinks so.)
2. I am a 'solution looking for a problem.' I am always trying to help others with things large and small. I must be okay at it since they keep letting me.
3. I can sing (and do). Not sure I believe that one. People keep asking me to perform, though, so I can't be that bad, right?

3. Beyond a doubt the accomplishment/activity of which I am the most proud, and to which I have put the most effort, is that my wife and I seem to have been pretty successful in raising 3 pretty decent young adults.
That is no small accomplishment. More people should put thought, care, and effort into raising good people.
Mine:
1. Currently I really like my legs. (This is related to #3)
2. I go out of my way to make people feel at-ease (but not so much that it makes people uncomfortable---there's such a thing as going overboard!)
3. I'm a good runner. I'm not about to break any records or win any endorsements, but I've run 2 races recently that I didn't train well for and my times were good enough that I know I could do great things if I put more effort into it. My "worst race ever" was the second of 2 Half-marathons that I ran this fall, and I thought I completely imploded. I did, however, finish a good 20 minutes faster than friends of mine who considered themselves running great races. I just need to put more into it.

Sorry if this is TMI, but despite having (and being on medication for) high blood pressure and diabetes, I am still fully functional sexually. This is not something a hypertensive, diabetic 41-year-old can take for granted.
I don't need to be around people all the time. People who do really freak me out.
I've come up with what, if I may so so myself, is a rather ingenious and relatively low-effort way of time-shifting the NPR shows I dearly love to listen to but don't enjoy interrupting my weekend for.

1. Hair (though going white) and perfect eye site here in my 40s.
2. Always happy & energetic, to the extent that a neutral response brings many statements of concern.

1. Good hair. And I'm physically healthy.
2. Personality wise? I'm good to work for. Whenever I hire someone, I give clear instructions, take away hindrances, show appreciation, bring hot or cold drinks as needed and I pay promptly.
3. Skill: I know a lot of practical trivia. Not so much about who won an award for what movie, but I know that soap makes a screw go easily in wood, and how to make a sauce from scratch, and how to get a hornet or snake out of a room, I know my way around govenment red tape, and in fact, how to solve most practical problems.

Yup, that'd be me. Most other "studies of something" have an "-ology" term attached to them, but I couldn't find any for national anthems. Got together with a friend of mine who studies ancient languages and came up with that. I haven't seen other anthematologists dissent (though I'm the only one it seems who uses it to the extent I do) so it stays there. Hopefully it'll eventually make it to Websters.
And thanks for the "majorly cool" shout, I rarely get that in my life. Where were you when I was in high school anyways?

2. My personality sucks too. The proof is in the fact that I have no friends.

1) I am well proportioned and have something like a swimmer's body. I am 6'1 and 180 with somewhat broad shoulders. I ballooned up briefly and that wasn't something I was used to and getting it back down to what I consider normal feels great.
2) I am very resilient and I don't really care what other people think and never have even as a young child. That causes some problems but it lets me do whatever I want without any extra mental overhead.
3). I can be a good writer even though I don't always try very hard, especially here. I can write in lots of different styles if I get the inspiration to commit to something. I will try anything at least twice. I am the person you want coming up with the plans if you want any type of true adventure. I will do just about anything that sounds thrilling just to get the experience even if it doesn't work out that well. So far, I have a 100% success rate with talking my way out of legal and police situations and that is no small feat.
I am 36 though so some of this stuff has to be modified in time.

1. I am 51 and have not a single gray hair, and I am often told that I have very nice skin.
2. I'm a low-maintenance, can-do kind of person. I don't get freaked out when things get sprung upon me at the last moment, and I'm good at figuring out the best way to handle that which has been sprung.
3. I'm a good writer. I'm a good choral singer. I make jewelry that people readily buy, or, if they don't buy, often say things like, "This is amazing! I've never seen anything like it!"

Name something physical you like about yourself (please avoid talking about the size of your sex organs). I really like my eye color. They're a dark indigo blue and look very pretty with black hair and quite pale skin.
Name something you like about your personality. My odd sense of humor.
Name something you like about your activities/skills/creativity. There's very few crafts I won't try to do. Even if all I ever do is read about a craft, I'm still happy that I know something new.

1. I like my feet. They're strong and well shaped. Also they are enormously useful as all the toes spread apart and I can pick up things with them. If I lose my arms, I've got nothing to worry about.
2. I like my honesty. Even in difficult situations, I always try to phrase things so that they are at least technically true. Telling an outright lie would make me unable to sleep for days.
3. I like my writing. This one makes me sad, because I haven't written in awhile. It's still there, I just have to revive it again.

And thanks for the "majorly cool" shout, I rarely get that in my life. Where were you when I was in high school anyways?
What years were they? Unless this is a clever way to ask me out on a date or to take a paternity test -------- in which case I never heard or Cecil Adams or the SDMB. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
:D
Not a date or a paternity test - I believe you're a male so thusly don't swing that way (and, if I miscalculated your gender, I'm married, sadly. :) )
Just a comment that no one ever called me "cool" in high school, ever. Would have appreciated a few people like you around then who recognized that I was cool. (Well, according to you, still am.)

To interject, I find that people who were "cool" in high school, often never graduate from being a high schooler. They kind of peak there and so are always trying to stay there.
Those of us freaks, geeks and nerdlings who achieve coolness recognition after high school tend to fare so much better.
So I'm glad you were not deemed cool then - cause we get to benefit from your coolness now!

1. There is nothing physically to like about myself. The proof is in I've never had a girlfriend.
2. My personality sucks too. The proof is in the fact that I have no friends.
3. Got none of these either. I'm a dumbass college dropout who's nothing more than a worthless piece of shit. Too bad I don't have the spine to off myself.
I'm sorry you feel that way about yourself. But I don't think "never had a girlfriend" says much about you physically. Your body is useful for other things, as many posters have mentioned. :)

mookie, since I can't send you a PM, let me just say: Please go talk to your doctor or therapist. Tell them what you've said here. If they say anything along the lines of "Come on, it's not that bad," or "I know you don't really believe that," or "You need to change your outlook on life," then ask to be referred to another therapist who will help you. If you're not on medication, ask about medication. If you're already on medication, ask whether it's working the way it's supposed to. You have a disease, as obviously as if you had chicken pox, and you need to get it treated correctly.
ETA: For everyone who's thinking, Geez, overreact much?: note that this is largely in response to his other thread.

I'm married too ------- and sometimes sad about that. Not too often but it happens. Most any other girl I ever dated would have beaten me to death in my sleep long ago so I figure I got lucky with the one I have.
I didn't get much appreciation in high school either but I had a good circle of my old friends and a great family; that made up for it. I was a transplant from a more rural area where things were more literal and, in some ways, honest. I also started working at the local Harley shop when I was 16 - which wasn't long after we got here. Take the average white suburban high school kid and put this hick in front of him who hangs out with outlaw bikers and cops all the time ------- and its like a sign from Nature saying "do not approach". I managed though.
And while we're talking words ---- I want to share one from my late BIL. My wife and I lived together for 22 years before we got around to getting married. When we first moved in together, we were very late teens and my BIL was like a high school freshman. When we were breaking the news to her parents, they were OK but not totally fine with it and my FIL had this look of concern. I nudged a little and he finally said what was bothering him most -------- how was he supposed to describe me to his friends and relatives? Boyfriend? Husband? Room-mate? (This was back before SO had really gotten common as a term)
My BIL suddenly got this big happy look on his face and said "I got it!!!!!!! You're my Pseudo-brother-semi-in-law!!!!!!!!"
That broke everyone up and made the whole thing comfortable. The next Sunday at church that was basically how my FIL introduced me to the Priest -- his pseudo-son-semi-in-law. The "word" never caught on but I used it proudly for 22 years.

Holy crap, another vexillologist here? I've been into flags for a very long time, the south wall of my basement is covered with hundreds of flags! (in fact, I'd consider myself a geek of all of the above except Tolkien (am I the only geek that hasn't read a word of Tolkien yet?), Holmes, and militaria). In fact, I'm very tempted to challenge you to a vexillological pissing contest to show who is the biggest flag geek here. :)
At least no one can touch my anthematological geekiness. Bow before me, mortals!
