It's hard to beat this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd_gvR06j6s) performance by David Silverman and the Phoenix Projekt. As you can imagine, he's a big hit at Burning Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi9qEkqfGCw&feature=related).

Appreciating the tuba has been, for me, a long road. I was introduced to it some years ago by a friend who plays the instrument, dearly loves it, and urged me to give it some exposure to the wider world.
So, Cecil, what's your view on that other much-maligned instrument, the Great Highland Bagpipe? :p
This is in answer to a SDChicago column.
Let's move this to the Chicago Questions forum

Okay, the tuba was front and center, but he was surrounded by scantly clad women and you had fire everywhere.
Heck, any musical instrument would look good in those circumstances.
Okay, maybe not the bagpipes, but almost anything else.

Unfortunately, the sound quality in that video was such that the tuba part itself was horribly mangled.
And Northern, I'll stand up for the pipes, even if nobody else will. If I don't stand up now, although I am not a piper, then when they come for the tubas there will be nobody left to stand up for me.

If somebody comes for my tubas, there will be a hell of a lot more room in my house. PM me for directions, and bring a truck.
