Ok, some more time has gone by and I want to do another head count.....

How many different Dopers have a level 80 Horde character on Cairne?

What if we start scheduling (in April) Monday nights at 10pm Eastern (7pm Pacific) to start doing 10-man raids? Even if we have 8 or 9 players start, we should be able to get through Naxxramas, right? Even if some players have a brand spanking new 80, all the more reason to get in there with us to improve their gear. The list does not have to stop at ten......12-15 (or even more!) would be optimal.

Does Monday Nights seem to be optimal for everyone? We could get a better consensus if we all take a copy of this list below and add your doper name, Character(s) name (T, H, D for Tank, Healer, or DPS.....or a combination) and best night(s) you are willing to play and the time zone you are in:

Burning Dog Legion 10-Man Raid List:

1. Yeticus Rex / Yeticalayla (D) / Mon or Wed. / Pacific

Excellent! I hope we can get something regularly scheduled. Kene is pretty much healing focused, but if we start small (Naxx, OS for example) he's overgeared enough to do decent DPS if needed.

As I recall, there was an issue back when BDL was actually raiding before with Mondays, because it's at the end of the raid week. Players who were actually actively looking for raid groups would get into PuG or semi-PuG runs and end up saved to a bunch of raids.

This probably won't be a problem for us while we're doing Naxx or OS (as long as it's not the weekly), or even Uld, probably, but might crop up as an issue if we start doing Ony or ToC or even (dare I hope) ICC.

I just have to check with my friend (Mordrin) to make sure he is available on Mondays.

Hey BDL! While I don't have an 80 on Cairne, if this does happen I would be interested in rolling here. I gave some consideration to it once before, but the fact that you all didn't raid was a bit of a bummer. That, and the latency; I'm a long way from the server in Seattle. Subscribing to this thread.

Which ever toon you feel most comfortable with is fine....you could even alternate them if it suits your personal endeavors. Who knows, we may run some of these raids more than once so you could alternate them. I guess we will know more when the time comes and the composition of the raid members and the needs of the group.

Very good point. I really don't know too much about resets and I really do not want to portray myself as the leader of the raid (I'm sooooooo underqualified), but I just wanted to take our characters/guild to the next level, hence this list.

twhitt, are you thinking of a transfer or power-leveling a DK?

I'd be tempted to PL a DK there to join in if you wish. My main is on Farstriders and is a tank, but all my friends are there so he's not going anywhere. But something to do when I'm not raiding on him would be neat. I can go tank or dps, whatever is needed and I know all the raids mentioned(since my main is MT for an end game raiding guild).

Yeti: If you can you should create a guild announcement in-game to refer people to this thread.

I don't know how to do that.......does that have something to do with the guild rank? Because I'm a 3.

twhitt, are you thinking of a transfer or power-leveling a DK?I would power-level anything, actually. 1-80 doesn't really take so long. It would depend on my mood, and the need, but I expect I could get something able to take on Naxx-10 inside of two weeks, if I get around to it. Shaman, possibly - you guys don't have a Lust or a Totem of Wrath buff. If you find one, I'll think some more. This is all in the super-hypothetical realm, by the way.

Whatever you two feel most comfortable with.......here's our guild (http://www.wowarmory.com/guild-info.xml?r=Cairne&gn=Burning+Dog+Legion) to peruse through.....although a good deal of 80s are alts.

My guess is that a DK and a Shammy would probably be most welcomed here. As for Tank or DPS or Healer.....I think we could use any combination, so probably it comes down to what you're comfortable with.

But my whistle has been wet, and I'd love to get some Burning Dog action going.

10.) Jsor (D) / Free any night time slot (this semester thru summer at least) / Arizona time zone (so I vary between what DST we're on at any given moment).

I know I sort of dropped out (AGAIN), but the game was getting rather stagnant, if we get raids going I'll probably start playing again.

ETA: I'd prefer to do all of the raids at least once, but WoW-heroes says I'm set gear-wise to do any 10-man currently available so whatever we decide to do I'm game.

I'd be interested. I have a mid 70s warrior tank (Mogbog). In general Tuesdays are ideal, but due to my work schedule I really can't commit an evening regularly week after week after week.

Another tank (even an occasional) would be good. I'm assuming we'll also have Reinsgaard/Proditio/Kahmu/Ragemode (all one player, and I forget his Dope name) at least some of the time. BTW, I'm currently leveling a shadow priest into his early/mid 70s - if we're on at the same time i'd love to tag along with a tank for instances. ;)

Trying to catch this thread before it falls off the front page.

So it looks like there are 9 on the list with availability on Monday. Should we make an appointment for Monday night? I'll log on tonight and create 3 events in the guild calendar for 6, 7, and 8 pm PT on Monday. Just confirm which ones you *could* make. And before Monday, we'll pick the best time with the most confirmed. Is 2 hours to run enough time for fun? 3?
(note: only use one character to respond.)
(notenote: I don't remember all the fights, so hopefully one of us can walk the rest through it)

I choose early for the Central TimeZone people. But if we want I can add 9pm or even 10pm, speak up.

I just checked wow-heroes.com and 7 of the Monday-9 are green for naxx10 and os10. And most of you are even green through some of the harder content. I think we could probably 9man it (or 8 or 7 even). So that'll be good for filling in some gear gaps, or gearing up your off-specs.

As for Ventrilo, my system doesn't look too good to handle wow and vent over wifi, but if anyone else wants to volunteer a system, I'll pay the fee. hold on... ok, I found some servers off of ventrilo.com that will host for as low as 4.99/mo. I can handle it for now. No need to use anyone's system.

Sooo whaddya say dogs? Legionnaires Unite?

If you wanna throw my level 80 DK Darland an invite he can be a backup tank for y'all. I've cleared everything save Yogg and the Lich King on my main, so fight familiarity won't be an issue. The DK is geared enough to tank or DPS up to ICC10.

I have generally moved my raiding activity to the weekends, but one night of occasional 10-man action with folks I know won't hurt, right?

Question: Do all 10 members in the raid have to be from the same guild to get some or all the achievements? You don't need to be in the same guild for any in-game achievements. Some third-party guild ranking sites require a certain number of guildies for it to count for progression purposes, but that's not really relevant for the BDL's current ambitions.

That said, obviously guild members should have priority. Just throwing my toon into the mix in case you need another tank, melee DPS, or just somebody familiar with the fights. :)

Oh man, could you imagine the massive outcry if they enabled that? No, as Jas09 said, there are currently no guild restrictions on achievements, nor are there any plans to create such restrictions. What is in the works is (a) realm transfer restrictions on server-first achievements and (b) guild progression bonuses.

Been tossing around the idea of playing again on Amarynth. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to raid, though (at least until mid-May), as my current schedule includes going to bed early -- and Tues and Sun are out entirely (rehearsal nights). If I do end up coming back, some of you may recall I'm specced both Prot and Holy, with decent gear for either (at least for 10-mans).

Wow, this is excellent. I'm particularly excited about getting a vent channel -- that will even be useful outside of raids, like for casual 5-mans or the Wed. night runs. Let me know if I can contribute (up to an amount my wife won't notice).

Anamorphic, will you be leveling your priest in order to be available for the 10-Man Raids, or just be a more casual guildie? If the former, sign-up!Sure, I would love that. He's 73 now (actually, one rested bubble away from 74). I'm not sure how long it'll take to get to 80, since my available time to play ebbs and flows from 'lots' to 'not much at all'. But I'd love to be a part of the raids when I get there!

Anyone want to offer up a suggestion for group dynamic? 2 tanks 2 healers Xdps? 1 tank 3 healers? 1 tank, 6 healer and 1 dps? I hope not that one :P
Remember we have some OP tanks and healers, but don't some Naxx mechanics require certain classes?
Lastly, is it possible to burn through Naxx in one night? 2 wings?

We're not looking for a clear, I hope this is just the start of something fun.

You can easily clear the entirety of Nax 10 in like 2, maybe 3 hours. A lot of the fights only require one tank, but enough require two that you might as well just run that way the whole time. Two healers is plenty for Nax these days.

Yeah, if we have an MT and an OT, two healers, and six dps we should be good. The key is having someone who knows the fight mechanics: if we have that we should be able to go through pretty quickly.

If we get through Naxx in 2 hours or so, could we see how many of us can take out the weekly 10-man raid for 5 frost/5 triumph emblems? I'm at 76 frost and I've got a craving for some DPS plate. (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50965)

The voids on KT are a huge pain--and a great lesson in raid awareness. :D You can't afford to get dialed in to what you're doing on a fight where failing to move at the right time (wrong time?) means you get insta-gibbed. (Especially annoying if you're an add tank, since the bugs love to stack right on top of you, which makes spotting the voids... interesting.)

Sounds like you guys are in a great position to knock it out of the park next week!

Heigan was a lot of fun, even though he was wipetastic.

I actually kind of miss Heigan. It's funny... a lot of Naxx fights are so gimmicky, that they sort of fall under the heading of "really hard until they're suddenly not." There's a big steep learning curve, but once you've got the trick of the fight, it's easy as pie.

I was tanking the bugs and had my camera spun so I could see the rest of the raid while I facerolled my 69696 away.... haha

:D If I had a dollar for every time I died to a void while add tanking on KT, I would have... several dollars. I found I often had to pull my camera almost all the way in to be able to see my feet at all. On the plus side, the only threat you have to worry about overcoming is healing aggro, so you can pretty much just keep your buffs and debuffs up and otherwise focus on making sure you're not standing in anything bad. Major bonus with 10-man, too, is that you don't have to worry about MCs.

First off, my apologies for showing up at the last minute and bumping off another guildie (was it you, Rasz?). I was rushing through dinner (cooking, eating and cleaning) to get done by 7pm Pacific and now I know it should have been for 6:45 instead. Other than that, that was new and fun to me, even though I died a little more than the average guildie. It was too bad someone had to sit out, but on the other hand, that's a nice problem to have. The purpose of these low-level raid runs is really to 1) learn to raid with each other, 2) gear up the guildies who need it. Next week, I'd say that Rasz automatically gets a spot if he wants it, and if we have more than 10 show up anyone willing to sit out can /roll like we did last week for a spot (as long as we can maintain our tank/healing/dps ratio).

Oh and if you don't have it already, you should probably also download the addon: Deadly Boss Mods. It gives a lot of useful information during boss fights.

Really, as long as you have any bossmod, it doesn't matter which one. The big three are Deadly Boss Mods (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/deadly-boss-mods.aspx)(DBM), BigWigs Bossmods (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/big-wigs.aspx)(Bigwigs or BW), and Deus Vox Encounters (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/deus-vox-encounters.aspx)(DXE). They all have their pros and cons; personally, I've used all three, and I like DXE best. They all work fine out of the box, but DXE is absolutely the most customizable. So if you like being able to move all your bars and alerts independently, changing what sounds are associated with what abilities/events, turning alerts on and off for abilities/events and tweaking what those alerts consist of... All that fun stuff. Plus, you get extra features like arrows on some fights telling you which way to run.

Just out of curiosity, were we doing Naxx on Regular or Heroic difficulty? If that was Regular, and it still took that long to kill a boss even with almost everybody majorly overgeared ...

Pre-ToC, there's no separate setting for raids. "Hard modes" are self-imposed by the way you do a fight. For Naxx, there weren't any hard modes as such (i.e., with better loot, like in Ulduar)--just extra achievements (e.g., killing Thad without crossing charges at all).

Just out of curiosity, were we doing Naxx on Regular or Heroic difficulty? If that was Regular, and it still took that long to kill a boss even with almost everybody majorly overgeared ... :eek:Raids don't have regular and heroic modes per se like regular dungeons do. Well, Icecrown Citadel does, but that's just that raid. Raids are either 10-man or 25-man, and some of them have additional constraints you can trigger to make the fights harder.

To simplify things, though, you can consider 10-man the equivalent of regular and 25-man the equivalent of heroic for most raids and we were on 10-man.

And you know yourself that everyone wasn't necessarily overgeared. You said yourself you had mostly blues and quest greens since you hadn't run heroics before we did Naxx. Mind, that's not such a big deal; Naxx doesn't require that much in the way of gear. The bigger issues we had came from most of us not knowing the fights; if you don't know what to kill first or where to run, you will die, as we saw on Heigan and his Floor of Death.

And yeah, Kel'Thuzad took a long time, but remember, he's the end boss of a giant raid instance and lore-wise he's Arthas's right-hand lich. We only did two wings before taking him on, and when the raid was originally designed people were expected to clear all four wings before going after Kel. That's intended to be an epic fight.

Finally, we did amazingly well, considering most of us didn't know the fights. Raids are intended to be these walls you throw yourself at over and over again for potentially months at a time before you eventually collect enough gear and learn the tricks to the point where you can finally emerge victorious. We cleared two wings, killed Sapphiron, and got Kel down to half life on our first night. In two hours. That is what being overgeared and having raid leaders who know the raid inside and out gets us. Sure, we wiped three or four times on Heigan, but remember, that's nothing compared to when this was endgame content.

ICC has Heroic modes. You just toggle them boss by boss instead of having four separate lockouts.

Naxx: No Heroic modes. No extra hardmode loot.
Sarth: No Heroic modes. Extra hardmode loot, based on how many drakes are up when you engage him.
Maly: No Heroic modes. I can't remember if the six-minute achievement gets you anything extra.
Ulduar: No Heroic modes. Hardmodes are triggered by the way you engage the boss (e.g., pressing the big red button on Mimiron, killing Hodir before he smashes his extra box o' loot, or engaging Freya while one or more of her Keepers is still alive).
ToC: Heroic modes. There are separate lockouts for 10, 10-Heroic, 25, and 25-Heroic; you either do all bosses on normal or all on Heroic.
ICC: Heroic modes. These are toggled on a per-boss basis. There are only two lockouts again: 10 and 25.

To simplify things, though, you can consider 10-man the equivalent of regular and 25-man the equivalent of heroic for most raids and we were on 10-man.

:dubious: That's simpler, sure, but it's also dead wrong, IMO. 25-man versions will often have different, harder mechanics than 10-mans (e.g., MCs in 25 but none in 10), but that's because of balance and synergy. A 25-man normal version of a 10-man normal fight really isn't at all comparable to a 10-man Heroic version of a 10-man normal fight.

Finally, we did amazingly well, considering most of us didn't know the fights.

This is the most important point to take away. :D

I wasn't using that because I was full screen on the game, but I saw towards the bottom of the screen (just above the bottom 2 action bars) that a little transparent window with the speaker symbol there would have a name flash on when they were talking, but it only happened for certain players talking, but not all of the players in our group who were logged into Vent.

AHA! You were using the in-game voice chat and Vent simultaneously. AFAIK, there's no way for Vent to interface with WoW, so if you can't see the window, you won't know who's talking. However, the built-in voice chat will display who is talking. So probably, you had it enabled and didn't realize it, as did some people in the raid, and they were doing something like using the same PTT key for Vent and for the in-game voice chat.

So.....I should disable the WoW in-game chat, and find the option to toggle to make the vent window stay on top of the game window, OR do I have to narrow the game window, move it to one side and put the Vent window on the other side so I can see both?

Skammer
03-24-2010, 04:36 PM
I've done that -- I have the same PTT button for the in-game chat and vent. But now that we have a vent channel, I probably won't use the ingame chat much.

If you want to see who's talking, you'll either have to tab back and forth or make your WoW window smaller. Ideally people should identify themselves when they talk unless they are one of the raid leaders (whose voice you would learn to recognize).

IMO, just leave Vent in the background. That's what I do--I'm not even watching it unless I'm doing something like changing channels or just hovering somewhere before a raid. Like Skammer said, you'll learn to recognize the RL's voice pretty quickly--everyone else you'll figure out sooner or later, assuming they talk enough, and in the beginning they should identify themselves so everyone knows who's talking.

So, for example, in a PUG, if I die, I'll say "Sleutel's dead," not "I'm dead." (Note: I only do this when I'm tanking. If a tank or a healer goes down, that's important. If a DPS goes down, unless you've got a very special role like kiting or interrupting, to be blunt, no one cares. :p)

Oh, god, the suicide rates alone would skyrocket...

The mammoth vendors are definitely useful for a raid. You have to run out to use it, but (a) it means you don't need an Engineer and (b) you don't have to keep the Engineer supplied with bots or the mats/money to make them.

That doesn't mean you should get one if there's something you'd want more, but it's definitely something that the raid can make use of.

Bird, if you read this... you can right-click on any invitee and make them a moderator for the raid. That gives them the ability to confirm attendees, invite people, etc. I'd suggest making Yeti a moderator in your absence.

Heh - I discovered that for myself yesterday (I wear reading glasses, cuz I'm old). My solution was to just push the earpieces of my glasses (what are those called?) up so that they weren't pressed between my ears and skull. I don't know if that would work with prescription glasses, though - the different angle might screw things up visually.

My regular old headphones don't have this problem - they're the bigger "ear can" style that surround the whole ear rather than pressing directly on the ear.

ETA: That said, the game really does seem to sound better through headphones than through my iMac's built-in speakers.

I just discovered last night that my main's Sea Turtle mount makes cute noises when you "jump" (actually he hides in his shell and then pops back out). I don't know if those sounds were added in the latest patch, or if they were always there and I just didn't hear them.

I'm certainly no expert, as it was my first raid, but I thought it went very well. No wipes, although we usually lost 2-3 people per boss fight. I had lots of fun, but man, those Raid bosses take a long time to take down.

Kudoes to Reins for the excellent explanations on the boss fights before we started. Knowing what to expect really helped a lot. It was also the first time that the DBM add-on really came into play for me; I installed it after I'd run all the 5-man heroics, so up until now it really hadn't provided much new information.

I did have the embarassment of dying when I accidentally touched one of those 'no-touchy' globules -- I'd missed that we were supposed to be hopping around and avoiding them. I just moused over, saw that their name was yellow, and ignored them. My mistake!

I did get a weapon upgrade though: Death's Bite (http://www.wowwiki.com/Death%27s_Bite) to replace my Titansteel Destroyer that I've been toting through weeks of heroics, so that was nice. :)

Really, the biggest problem with Frogger is lag. The best way to do it is to (a) aim right at the backside of an ooze or (b) have enough HP that you can live through a hit, in which case you can just stop between each row to get your health back to full. :D

Theoretically I'm specced and gemmed for tanking (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Cairne&cn=Nahren), though my trinkets and enchants kinda suck. My expertise is at the soft cap (and actually a good bit beyond with the 213 staff I got off KT last night), but I don't know how essential being at the expertise hard cap is for a tank. Defense is capped (yay druids) and my health is just over 30k with the new staff. Half my gear is still in the 200s, so I won't be tanking ICC anytime soon, and I'm not sure I could tank Ulduar, but Naxx might be doable.

Expertise is still a nice threat stat for tanks, though it's less of an avoidance one now that a lot of bosses no longer parry-haste. It's certainly not a priority stat for most of us--we usually gem Stam, Stam, and then, to spice things up... um, Stam. 30k HP should be fine for Naxx10. Really, one of the biggest parts of tanking is learning the mechanics, not getting the stats (other than the obvious uncrittable part).

Ok guys, next Monday is still sitting open on the calendar. I vote for starting with Obsidian Sanctum with 1 (maybe 2, depending on time) revisits to Naxx for those who missed out on some of the bosses back in Naxx. If nobody needs any Naxx bosses, then maybe take a vote and see if we should move on to Eye of Eternity. I personally don't know how much time it takes for OS and/or EoE, but for those who do, please chime in and recommend a better plan.....better yet.....put the plan on the calendar!

Skammer
04-08-2010, 02:19 PM
The thing about Naxx is that the weekly raid quest is in Naxx this week, so anyone who does that prior to Monday will be locked out. If we know we're going to go to Naxx, people might wait to do the weekly together. Any PUGs will just want to do the quest boss (which is the spider guy I think).

Personally I'd vote for doing OS, and then if that goes quickly, trying for EoE. EoE is pretty fast, but also pretty tricky because of the mechanics. OS should be easy, particularly if we are not leaving any portals open (which is how we should do it the first time, anyway).

I also noticed this morning that we had 10 accepteds already and 4 tentatives. Looks like we'll be turning people away tonight (at least for the OS run) If we require an open Naxx lock, those numbers may drop significantly. (As would the likelihood of finishing a Naxx run.)

I think Kalathan has one raid quest in her log that I picked up ages ago and have never bothered with -- Noxx the Plaguebringer must die or some such. Is there a quest chain she has to complete before she can get the Naxx weeklies?

There's a guy in Dalaran, in the Violet Hold (near the entrance to the instance) who gives out the quest - if you already have a weekly in your quest thingy you aren't eligible for another, so you should probably just drop the one you have.

Yeah Runestar - if you don't get to do the weekly quest in a certain week, you should drop it and pick up the new one. It resets on Tuesdays.

Another success on KT: Link1 (http://tinypic.com/r/23vcozt/5), Link2 (http://tinypic.com/r/169m4va/5).

I know more got shots, and there probably better quality.

As for OS, no one died, but I dd get DC at 11%. Not sure what happened because I could still hear you through vent.

Next week, OS+1 then EoE?

FYI, you should be able to complete a previous week's quest. The problem with that is, it will be much harder to find a group for an old weekly if it's old content. Most people won't want to run in and kill Noth, for example, on any week where the quest isn't to kill him. Something like Marrowgar (or even possibly Sartharion) might still be doable on an off-week, though.

Anyway. I'm glad we're getting this done, and really happy we're getting lots of response. Had 11 accepteds and 5 tentatives last night, which forced us to get volunteers to drop. Luckily we are in this just for fun, so no one is missing out on gear grabs:) I hope everyone else is having fun with this. Soon(ish) we'll get to some more challenging raids. I know LB still needs to gear up (wow-heroes gear score: 2108ret, 1753prot). I think a couple others do too, but we do have a few who are OP and I don't want to lose their interest.

I was actually glad you didn't need Kene for OS, since my alt Keyne got put in Sunken Temple and I would've hated to drop. But I definitely want to do EoE next week. If we're consistently getting more than 10 people signing up, we might need to come up with some kind of rotation so people don't feel bad if they get left out one week.

Speaking of Sunken Temple - Shade of Eranikus dropped Dragon's Call (www.wowhead.com/item=10847) which would have been awesome to get, but I lost the roll (I think the rogue got it). That's the only time I've ever seen that drop, I'm pretty sure.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't mind running old content with the guild -- it's just the fact that we're doing guild runs that's fun. We'll eventually have the gear and experience to tackle the harder things (after EoE, we can probably start working our way through Ulduar and ToC without too much trouble), and I'm not in much of a rush to do so, as I'm enjoying the casual atmosphere. There's usually also enough people willing to drop with no hard feelings on days where we have more than 10 sign up -- if I don't get to raid, that just means I get more sleep that night ;)

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I'm out of town for two weeks (my mom had surgery), with only my laptop. I hate playing on my laptop.

I hit 80 on my priest, and I'm starting to gear him up for raids. I've been striving for healing, since it's what I know and am good at -- but it's sounding like maybe we have too many healers? Should I switch to shadow and concentrate on that instead?

I set up the raid event as OS followed by EoE. But that's only because OS took us 30 minutes to complete (and that was after getting together and there). Even with a drake up, I'm hoping we get it in one or two.

EoE will be fun. I encourage everyone to check out the videos for the 3 phases. Especially phase 3 because you don't use your spells, you use the drakes'. So it'll help to know what you can do. Phase 3 under Strategies has the list of drake skills (http://www.wowwiki.com/Malygos_%28tactics%29)

I would much rather stick to healing, to be honest, but I have no problem having a shadow off-spec and dpsing when needed. I definitely will dual-spec when I can afford it. I leveled 70-80 almost entirely healing instances, so I think now I'm going to blaze through the quests I skipped over. I should have a ton of gold in no time.

I'm gonna ask this again......why didn't our guild get the credit for taking out Kel'Thuzad not just once, but twice? Were we supposed to have the entire raid group from the same guild to get the credit or is KT one slimely sucker to pin down on the raid achievement page?

Also.....do we even have a chance to do the Weekly Raid in ICC, or not?

I've never had much luck with the guild tracker at Wow-Heroes. Guild Progress seems to work a bit better. Here's the link for Burning Dog Legion:

http://wow.guildprogress.com/US/Cairne/Burning_Dog_Legion/Wrath_of_the_Lich_King

You can see it has BDL getting that boss down almost a year ago. They probably counted the total number of toons that were in the guild back then that had that kill, not necessarily doing it all together. I recall at least one run that had a decent number of guildies in it back then - I got the kill on 4/29/09, about a week before the guild was given credit by guildprogress.

Each guild tracking site has different rules about what constitutes a kill. Another one is guildox, but they recently removed all older content, and are only tracking ToGC and later, I believe. Wowprogress also only tracks Ulduar and newer, I believe.

As far as Marrowgar, you could always give it a shot, but you probably have a number of folks already saved.

Great runs last night guys. We wiped once on Sarth+1 (I'm not entirely sure how), but came back in and decimated him the next time through. Then, we flew off to EoE to take on Malygos. We wiped several times (all but once during Phase 3). Our second attempt on him in phase 3 saw him fall down to 14k health before we wiped (so close). We wiped (well, all but 2 players, iirc) during Phase 2 the next time, and finally managed to take him down on our (I think) fourth attempt.

I really enjoyed last night. It was my first time doing raid healing (outside of tank healing Reins on the Four Horsemen in Naxx a few weeks ago). Definitely a whole different ballgame from DPSing as a moonkin.

Also, I earned enough badges from last night to finally afford the last piece of t9 resto gear for the 4 piece bonus, which I got to use when we did a 5-man daily (HoS) after the raid was over. It was sweet seeing my Rejuv crits tick for over 3000. :D

I think about 3 or 4 of us did (including me) - there was some nice achievement spam when he went down anyway. I was among the early deaths during the 3 wipes (once even on phase 1), and never got very comfortable with the fight; could never seem to find the damn sparks to help dps them down, so finally i decided just to ignore them and concentrate on being a DPS bot; and then the flying dudes always seemed to be too far away from the bubble-domes for me to reach them. Finally in the vehicle stage I ended up way away from everyone else - they were about on a level with the boss but somehow I was directly above him - but that actually worked out okay; I was able to do my dps rotation and occasionally shift out of the poo, and not being in range of the healers wasn't a big problem because I wasn't really being hit either. But I never really knew what the hell was going on.

Are you playing with enemy nameplates enabled? If not, IMO, you should. Having a big floating bar above the name helps greatly.

On Maly specifically, you'll also be able to tell which direction a spark will be coming from, because the star that's spawned one will get much bigger and pulse-y. When I'm tanking Maly (and I fucking hate tanking Maly), I make sure to have my camera scrolled out to absolute max distance, so that I can constantly rotate it around to see where the next spark will come from (and pull him around the rim accordingly). As a DPS, it can still be helpful to know which way to be looking, though obviously not quite as time-sensitive, since you aren't the ones responsible for making sure the spark is coming in at Maly's tail instead of his head.

According to wow-heroes' raid levels, next up is Ulduar. I've never been inside so I'm at a complete loss. Is it something we can piece together like the quarters of Naxx? Or do you have to do it all within one raid lockout? (Speaking of which, I noticed an "Extend lockout" button on my raid panel. Would this help us maintain our progress?)

Ulduar is both more and less linear than Naxx; there are some set paths, but there are also quite a few optional bosses. However, there is no way to "skip to the end," nor would you want to; even on regular vs. hardmode, the final bosses are very difficult.

(Speaking of which, I noticed an "Extend lockout" button on my raid panel. Would this help us maintain our progress?)

It's certainly an option! You can choose to continue your progress from week to week. The only downside is that you then can't go back and kill the earlier, easier bosses, which gives you an opportunity to gear up better to put you in a better position to kill the later ones.

So does it just extend the lockout for the raid leader? Because another potential issue is that if you extend the lockout, and then the weekly raid quest is for Flame Leviathan (or whatever), you're SOL or at least have to find a 25 man raid to do it in.

Skammer

We probably still have folks who will get upgrades in Ulduar, so we may not want to extend the lockouts until there are no more to be had from the early bosses. Tom has a good point about the weekly raid, too.

I've done two of the Ulduar bosses for the weekly quests (the Flame Leviathan, and... XT-002?) but that's about all I know, and I'm still not quite sure what's going on during the vehicle stage at the beginning. I don't know of anyone in our guild who has much Uld experience, so we may just have to do our best to read up on it before hand and then learn as we go along.

I am rather hopeful about getting some of the tailoring recipes that drop in there (I think), even the items wouldn't be upgrades at this point.

1.) Every person has to extend their raid lockout individually.

2.) You can extend your most recent lockout for a given raid at any time. You just can't have been saved to a new ID--it's at that point that you lose the old one. So the BDL can wait to see what the current week's weekly raid is before deciding whether or not to extend the current lockout--it's not a decision that has to be made before the reset.

Jas09
04-20-2010, 11:26 AM
1.) Every person has to extend their raid lockout individually.I'm not sure this is correct, SFG. I know this week our raid leader extended the ICC25 lockout (to work on the LK on Saturday). I did not do anything, and when I zoned in everything was dead up to the LK.

To add another layer to it, after the raid (since we didn't kill the LK) the raid lead *unextended* the lockout, and when we all zoned in on Sunday it was to a fresh raid.

So, only the person that creates the instance has to extend their lockout. The safest way to do this is for the raid leader to extend his lockout and zone in first.

Also, you are not saved to an extended lockout until a boss is dead. We have been using this feature to let us get in a full day of LK attempts without the pressure of having to kill 11/12 in 3 hours just to get there.

As far as Ulduar I'd say read up a bit and just go for it. The first wing isn't that tricky, and it's more fun (IMO) to learn the bosses as a group than have one person tell you exactly what to do and then do it. YMMV. :)

Shot From Guns

I'm not sure this is correct, SFG.

Yes, it was poorly phrased on my part. The emphasis I was trying to give was that while the RL must extent their lockout in order to zone into the previous week's raid instead of a new one, that does not automatically extend everyone else's. (What I mean is, if the RL extends and you don't go along to that raid, you can still go to a new raid, even though you were part of the old raid ID that was extended.)

Timing is the same, but IIRC Sarth gets more HP and does more damage for every drake that's still up at the time he's engaged. (This is in addition to the abilities he gains sequentially as each drake lands before it's killed.) It's been a long time since I've done anything but faceroll zerg 3D, though, so I could be wrong.

Ulduar's a ton of fun, but yeah, there are clumps of bosses that you can pick to do or skip as the case were. Either way, you still have to blast through Flame Leviathan and XT to get to the next part which would be Kologarn. Each section with its collection of bosses is gated so that you have to kill a specific boss to open up the teleport to the next section.

We can always go back to OS when our lower geared folks up their dps (ME). In fact since I've never been in Ulduar I may grab RottingBird off the shelf so he can gear up some cloth dps. We can always afford to drop one of our 4 Paladins! and we don't have a mage so I think that's a plan!

Hey! That's no fair, how is a tank or healer supposed to get that achievement?

When I got it on Ama as MT, I was being kinda sneaky. Since only the first 3 Scions land, I got bored running from bubble to bubble. So when a disc landed near me and there were no more melee dps needing it, I ninjad it before one of the ranged dps could get on it, flew around, and waited till one got low enough that I could 1-shot it with Hammer of Wrath :) I'm sure you could do something similar as a healer using one of your quick DDs.

Yeah, timing the sparks is always tricksy. The best is if you can have a DK to Grip + Chains the damn things.

It's still not... optimal, by the time it's in DG range another one has spawned (so I was sort of sitting there waiting for it to get in range half the time), and the other half of the time he vortexed so it didn't really matter since it was on the field afterwards anyways. Also, those things have like no health, so I'm not seeing how chains is needed.

Grats on Maly and the title! :D

Isn't there also a key that you HAVE to get in 25-man in order to complete it (for Yogg-Saron I think), or did they scrap that? Either way I suspect one of us has the key anyway, probably Reins or Kene.

Kene doesn't have the key; I've only done the first three bosses of Ulduar (and even then, didn't really have a good grasp of what was going on).

If people read the strategy overviews on Wowwiki or wherever, we should be able to get at least a couple of bosses down on Monday. It'll be fun!

Grats on downing Maly, guys! I've had PUGs that couldn't get him down when he's the weekly.

Did anybody get their title? Which one is that--"Champion of the Frozen Waste," I think.

I did - Kalathan is now "Champion of the Frozen Wastes".

Didn't even notice that I'd gotten that achievement until I pulled up my character and noticed there was an additional option in my title's drop-down box (other than "the Patient").

Hey! That's no fair, how is a tank or healer supposed to get that achievement?

By getting up on a flying platform. Easier to do once you're comfortable with the fight (and especially when you overgear it).

When I got it on Ama as MT, I was being kinda sneaky. [snip] when a disc landed near me and there were no more melee dps needing it, I ninjad it before one of the ranged dps could get on it

IMO, that's not being sneaky--that's proper procedure. Melee DPS go up first, then the tank, then ranged if there are still discs dropping.

It's still not... optimal, by the time it's in DG range another one has spawned (so I was sort of sitting there waiting for it to get in range half the time), and the other half of the time he vortexed so it didn't really matter since it was on the field afterwards anyways.

It's really just a matter of positioning. And timing the sparks with relation to the vorteces gets easier once you've done it enough times so you get a feel for it. (E.g., he will always Vortex before the first spark gets close.)

Also, those things have like no health, so I'm not seeing how chains is needed.

Gives people more time to switch targets, and also helps get the spark exactly where you want it. It was more of an issue back when this was bleeding-edge content, when (a) it took longer to kill the sparks and (b) you needed to stack them to get the six-minute achievement.

Isn't there also a key that you HAVE to get in 25-man in order to complete it (for Yogg-Saron I think), or did they scrap that? Either way I suspect one of us has the key anyway, probably Reins or Kene.

The only things that are keyed are Malygos and Algalon. Malygos you get the key for off of Sapph in Naxx; Algalon you get the key for off of hardmode bosses in Ulduar. Alg is an optional boss, and is himself a hardmode.

Horde controls WG so infrequently on Cairne that I rarely get a chance to run VoA in any given week.

They haven't had 10 Burning Dog Legionnaires on their side! Working as a team on Vent?! oh man we'd be unstoppable. well maybe not. Still it'd be fun if it was necessary :)

Still, where does VoA fall in terms of difficulty? Is it broken up by boss? (Boss A is easy, boss B is hard, etc.)

Skammer
04-21-2010, 05:04 PM
Yes, that's it. There are four bosses presently, which are progressively harder. Most groups nowadays only do the last two bosses, since the drops are of a higher level.

It'd certainly be worth us giving it a shot if we happen to have WG. I think we can do the first two without much difficulty, and probably the third. The most recent boss probably requires more dps (especially ranged dps) than we are currently putting out, would be my guess.

Shot From Guns
04-22-2010, 10:48 AM
The problem with VoA is that the last boss does drop T10 and Frost badges, so most people who are at that gear level are going to be saved to it, and might not want to get saved to a run that's only going to clear the earlier bosses. You'll also probably have a hard time finding people to PUG in who're willing to only do the earlier bosses.

ETA: The bosses get "harder" only in the sense of having more HP and hitting harder. IMO, the "hardest" boss is actually the second one, Emalon, since he requires the most strategy on the part of everyone involved. (Mainly, the problem is that if the DPS doesn't switch to the right add at the right time, it's a wipe.)

Skammer
04-22-2010, 10:58 AM
I agree -- the third one (the fire guy) is actually pretty easy as long as you don't [b]stand in the damn fire[/i].

I don't think we should plan on VoA just because it's too hard to predict when it will be available. I'd hate giving up a chance to run it on the weekend and then have it not available on Monday. Most of the time I don't get to do it at all.

FlightlessBird
04-22-2010, 12:00 PM
Got it. I think VoA will be a 'addon' type run. Like if we finish with Ulduar in 30 minutes :D, or more likely, we fail on a boss. AND no ones saved then we'll give it a shot. It sounds like Horde hasn't been winning VoA much, so maybe we'll catch a break on raid lockouts (and since we run on Mondays those lockouts will get reset the next day for those who may do it during the week)

I setup the new raid for Uld10. Same dog-time, same dog-channel.:D

I'm in Bird.

As for VoA.....I've noticed the last couple of weeks when I'm on...(after 10pm PDT), the Horde manages to capture (and also has defended!) WG......I got in last week and we took out the frost boss and fire boss although the drops were nothing of interest to me.......I usually finished 6th or 7th on the DPS list for the 25man VoA, so I am a contributor. I think we can pull a 10man there.

Last night, I just did my first ICC10 run.....took 4 attempts to take down Marrowgar and after 5 attempts, gave up on Deathwhisper. We just could not keep up with the adds turning into those large fanatics which one shotted most of the group or two shotted the tanks. Lots of fun though.......except for the trips to the smithy.

Deathwhisper can be bad if the DPS don't know what to do. With high DPS the fight is trivial (because the adds die before they are transformed).

In particular it sounds like you were having trouble with the Deformed Fanatic (the hulk-looking things) - they need to be kited (either by a hunter using Distracting Shot - which is what I usually do, or by a tank just running away). He generally can't just be tanked (especially if there are other adds up as well) because he hits pretty damn hard (they melee for 30k on a plate tank in 25s, as well as doing a cleave and some sort of shadow damage). The should be the number one kill priority for all ranged DPS while they are up.

Skammer

Grats, Yeti. Deathwhisper is another example of a fight where I'm glad to be a healer. I just have to stand in the middle and heal/debuff whoever needs it. Once or twice a fight I'll have to move to get out of death & decay but that's it. I don't know why people complain that it's a difficult fight :)

I might do some half-assed questing while we are watching TV, but nothing that will require the attention that Ulduar would. So I RSVP'd as "Tentative" but you should probably plan on me not being there, unfortunately. Good luck though! Wish I could make it!

Skill/strategy has very little to do with it when there's 100+ Alliance on the field versus the Horde's 35 ;)

There are actually hidden mechanics that give one faction a progressively larger advantage when the opposing side has won WG too many times in a row. There are also the visible mechanics that give outnumbered players in a given zone more health/damage/etc.

We just could not keep up with the adds turning into those large fanatics which one shotted most of the group or two shotted the tanks.

As has been observed, the zombies shouldn't ever be tanked. They should always be kited. IME, the tank who currently has aggro when one of the adds goes Deformed calls it out on Vent and starts running. That target then has kill priority until it's dead.

FlightlessBird

Maybe Jsor could (he's certainly geared for it). If not, then maybe back to Naxx for some fun/training. I'm sure that we'll be back on our feet in a week.

I'd be in favor of at least taking on Flame Leviathan in Ulduar, which is a 100% vehicle fight and hence won't be sabatoged by lack of tanks. And I can definitely bring Muzungu along instead of Rumpole, though of course I don't know the fights (I've done razorscale once as a dps and that's it).

I was tanking that run, and didn't realize we were in Normal until we killed the first boss and he dropped a 2-handed mace, which I remembered him dropping in another normal PoS run. But I'd THOUGHT we had been knocking over the trash a little faster than I was used to.

It was kind of fun to get back to tanking. Now that Rumpole is basically as geared up as anything short of frost emblems will get him, I might bring Muzungu out of semi-retirement on occasion.

Yeah, I know about those -- they don't really do squat when you're as grossly outnumbered as we usually are. The only times we ever win WG are when we have less than 3 stacks of Tenacity, which is maybe 2-3 times per week during off-hours. Actually Lightbird got a sword that was an iLvl UG but I'm not sure how much better it really is. (some +s some -s, but it left my defense over 540)
But he still has a lot of sub-200 iLvl gear in his Tanking set so I really need to get to work.
How was my tanking? We wiped once early on, and then relied on the 2 outstanding ret Pallies to pull us out of the Ick-mess. Otherwise I don't think I lost too much aggro, but only Kene would know who was getting healed.
I think the RDF won't even let me into HoR yet so I doubt we would've done well with that.

You did fine, Bird. Part of the "Ick mess" was my fault. He was casting pursuit on me and I ran, get this, into the corner like I was 5. >.<

Okay to be fair, I was trying not to run through the muck and accidentally went towards the corner because of where it was placed, but still, that was completely my fault.

Trust me, it's still not as bad as the first time we I tried regular PoS. We ended up with just me and Reins taking out 75% of Ick's HP because most of us ended up dying horribly.

Tom Scud

I love Ick - probably my favorite fight in the game, because it's so random, and yet easier than it looks. With all his special abilities he's likely to take someone or other out at almost any time, but because he keeps stopping to use them, he can't bring the hammer down if the heals or tank go down. I've beaten him a bunch of times on Muz after the heals went down, and the other day, the group I was in knocked him down from about a third of his hit points after the tank went down, with my clothie shadow priest holding aggro. If he'd just run towards me and beaten on me, we probably would have wiped.

The one thing to remember with Ick is that no matter what special thing he's about to do, run away.

Casting pursuit? Run away from him.

Bird, your tanking was not a problem. A couple of times you had some spikey damage and occasionally one of the other pallies pulled aggro, but it wasn't out of control. After a few pulls I learned not to pre-heal or shield you until you built up some aggro and it was fine.

The only time it got a little crazy were on the first couple of pulls up the hill, when one of the Repentances broke.

Sorry I haven't been showing up with Keliraeda. Since I've started running Heroics on my main (my human pally) she's gotten a lot more fun and has been keeping me busy. Keliraeda is essentially a near-clone of my main, aside from gear, so taking a break from my main to play basically the same toon with a different model just isn't doing it for me. And at this point I can't manage to get interested in tanking or healing.

I've also been investing a lot of my non-pally time to my draenei mage, who is about halfway between lvls 75 and 76. I want to get her to 80 soon so that I can pass her heirloom robe and shoulders down to my [currently-level-28] priest, who has recently started to be a lot of fun.

But for BDL, I have been spending as much time as I can leveling my warlock, Hexpot, (lvl 32 now). I hope to get her to 80 before too long, to help relieve the overabundance of pallys, priests, and druids at the top. I suppose it wouldn't hurt for Keliraeda to start working that Argent Crusade rep to get access to the heirloom stuff.

Even if it's a Warrior, the 10% XP beats out the useless stats and minimal armor (and even then they grant extra Stam, so they're not totally useless). If you have a pressing need to use your Emblems for level 80 gear, you can make do with that, and maybe even the cloth chest if you want to live dangerously.

I prefer using class-appropriate gear, though, or at least close enough to be useful. Right now I have cloth shoulders and chest for casters, leather +agility shoulders for rogues, druids, hunters, and enh shammies, and plate shoulders for warriors and pallies.

(Come to think of it, wearing cloth on a non-caster would probably get you kicked if you're leveling through dungeons. So maybe it's not as great an idea as it used to be, unless you're powersoloing.)

My warrior already has the plate shoulders; I bought the mail caster chest for my shaman, and the mail AGI chest and shoulders for my hunter (though all count as leather at this point, since both toons are under 40). Haven't bought any leather heirlooms, since I just don't enjoy druids or rogues.
